In a world of myths and mysteries, the pinnacle of the magical academies exists. Eldritch Academy offers education to all ages and species but specializes in the study and training of one's innate mystical capabilities, often called Eldritch Energies, Powers, or Unknowns, but more formally known as their Talent. However, tensions run high with the nations only holding a fragile peace as the Talents that rival the epitomes of technology change the balance of power.
With the more recent uprising of evil Shades and introduction of combat-oriented programs into Talent-focused schools, nations grow more aggressive towards one another. The demand for resources grows, and skirmishes at the border of Arka and Mistere become more frequent. Monsters run into the nations from the Wildes, terrorizing villages and cities. The need for trained or in-training Hunters and Guardians has never been more urgent.

"All right, Ariya. See you later." Kaname said to the fox-girl just before she departed. Now Kaname was left alone with her thoughts, which was not exactly the best place to be. They tended to wander into unpleasant territory. Maybe she should go back to her dorm too. Hanging around while Lavender and Mr. Felis spoke was not the best idea because they might think she was eavesdropping.
Kaname headed back to her dorm. She wanted to make sure that someone did not run off with her sword while she was gone.

It was foggy out the next day, with a gloomy grey sky that only served to remind Ariya that it was autumn, and not summer. She wouldn't have come out to the gardens with this type of sky and in this weather, except that she'd had kind of a stressful time in her classes today, and she needed to be someplace peaceful so she could unwind and calm her nerves down a bit. She had brought her sketchpad with her again, along with a textbook for one of her classes this time.
Ariya sat down and opened her sketchpad. She brought out her pencil, and closed her eyes. Despite the lackluster sky and fog out, the colors of the flowers still showed through, and their fragrance gave her a peaceful calm that she needed. She inhaled, and then exhaled, breathing in the wonderful scents that she loved, and then opened her pretty brown eyes again. She began to do some sketches, her fox tail wagging happily as she drew.

For some reason Kaname found herself returning to the courtyard garden. For one thing she did not like to stay inside all the time. For another thing she had finished classes for the day. She did not want to sit in her dorm room either, so Kaname came outside and waited for something to happen.
As she walked through the garden she spotted Ariya again. The fox-girl had a sketchpad and pencil in hand and was busy sketching something. Kaname felt like she should not interfere. Maybe she should turn around and go elsewhere.
"Hi Ariya." Kaname greeted the older girl without thinking about it.

Ariya heard a familiar voice greeting her, and she looked up to see the half-ghost girl Kaname. She smiled and put her pencil in her sketchpad as a bookmark, and closed it. "Hi Kaname." she said rather casually. A crisp breeze blew through her long brown hair and on her skin, sending a chill down her spine. "It's a bit chilly, but I couldn't pass up an opportunity to sketch out here despite what's its like today. The flowers are still pretty enough out here, and I need a break from all the stress of my classes today. Anyways, how are you doing today?" she asked.

"I'm doing OK. I had coffee, so everything's right with the world." Kaname made a self-deprecating reference to her worrisome coffee habit. It was not very healthy, but neither was a sword through the chest. Besides, the caffeine high somehow kept the sword's influence at bay, so it was not an exaggeration to say that coffee was saving her life and the lives of everyone around her.
"Yeah, everything's going OK. Just another day in Eldritch Academy." Kaname absentmindedly continued. She wondered if taking up art could help her stay in control. She was not much of an artist, though.

Ariya chuckled. "Yeah, I always like getting my daily dose of caffeine before my first class starts. Otherwise I end up falling asleep." she said. She giggled. "I promised myself I wouldn't do that. I've done it many times before when I was younger, and I always got in trouble for it, so I'm trying to make an effort to fix that. So far it's working." she said. At least, I HOPE it is. I haven't gotten in trouble yet. she thought to herself.

"Yeah, I wish that I could sleep sometimes." Kaname expressed her wish. Unfortunately, she could not go to sleep because someone would inevitably complain because reasons. A caffeine habit was the way to go. The local coffee shop stayed in business and she got a caffeine fix. Everyone came out a winner.
"Me, I can't sleep during the day no matter how hard I try." Kaname said to Ariya. She had too much to do in order to keep ahead of her competition. She also had to work on keeping the sword's influence from taking her over and wreaking havoc on the student body.

Ariya said, chuckling. I hope she still gets the sleep she needs at night. Wait, what am I thinking? She probably does, just like anyone else. she thought to herself. Then again, she didn't exactly know the sleeping habits of half-ghost people.
"So Kaname, tell me, how do you unwind after your classes are done for the day? Do you just go back to your dorm and study, or do you do something else?" Ariya asked out of curiosity. Her fox tail randomly wiggled a little, and her fox ears twitched a little. Kaname didn't have to answer that if she didn't want to, but Ariya was just doing some small-talk.

"I usually go back to my dorm and study. On some occasions I walk on the outdoor track until I get tired of it." Kaname explained what she did to unwind after class. What she said was a partial truth because she had also picked up a new hobby. That new hobby was trying to find out more about the sword that had become attached to her. However, it was not so much a hobby as it was a personal mission. Most people did not risk harming others if they did not practice their hobby.
"What about you? Do you do sports or anything like that?" Kaname asked Ariya.

"Oh, I like to come out here and either sketch or do a little outdoor studying." Ariya replied. She then quickly glanced around to make sure no one else besides her and Kaname were there before adding, "I also dabble a little bit in archery." She smiled a bit sheepishly. She really didn't seem like the athletic type, but to her archery was one of the few 'sports', so to speak, that she felt she could do without needing to be more fit.
"See, I have a practice bow that my father gave me when I was a kid, about a year before I started attending Eldritch Academy, and he got me started on archery. I've been hooked ever since. I'll sometimes take my bow and head over to the gym, and I'll borrow the practice targets there, and do a little, you know, target practice. I enjoy it." Ariya said, fidgeting with her hands a little.

"Archery, huh?" Kaname asked. That sounded kind of interesting. It was exactly the kind of martial hobby she needed to help make pursuing her other hobby easier. No one would see much harm in Kaname carrying a bow, but people were already on edge about her having a sword. They might run for the hills if they learned that the hybrid now had a bow as well.
"Is there a club for archery or do you just bring your own bows and arrows?" Kaname asked Ariya with genuine interest on her voice.

"Nope, just me. I usually bring my own bow and practice arrows. If you remember that archery kit I said my dad gave me, well I still have it, and that's what I bring with me to the gym for target practice." Ariya explained. She noted to herself that Kaname seemed interested. "Um, you could come with me and we could take turns with my bow. Or if you would rather practice alone, we could see if the academy's gym has a practice bow and some arrows in a closet somewhere." she said.

"I don't wanna risk messing up your gear, so one day we'll check with the school to see if there was some I could borrow. I don't wanna mess up school gear either, but I'd rather not mess yours up since it's personal property." Kaname said to Ariya. The hybrid was still interested in trying archery. She just did not want to take Ariya's gear and risk ruining it because she sort of liked Ariya. Ariya was one of the few upperclassmen to treat her like a human instead of an object of contempt or annoyance.
"How hard is it to take up archery?" Kaname asked Ariya. Since she would live for at least 500 years unless violent death cut her life short, time was not an object to Kaname. She was simply curious.

"Not much. All you really need is a bow, a few arrows, and a target." Ariya replied. "Wooden targets are good enough. The academy's gym usually has a couple. They're kept in the gym's storage room. I usually use those. They may also have some bows and arrows, but that's just a guess." she added.
