welcome to Eldritch Academy
In a world of myths and mysteries, the pinnacle of the magical academies exists. Eldritch Academy offers education to all ages and species but specializes in the study and training of one's innate mystical capabilities, often called Eldritch Energies, Powers, or Unknowns, but more formally known as their Talent. However, tensions run high with the nations only holding a fragile peace as the Talents that rival the epitomes of technology change the balance of power.
With the more recent uprising of evil Shades and introduction of combat-oriented programs into Talent-focused schools, nations grow more aggressive towards one another. The demand for resources grows, and skirmishes at the border of Arka and Mistere become more frequent. Monsters run into the nations from the Wildes, terrorizing villages and cities. The need for trained or in-training Hunters and Guardians has never been more urgent.

The half-breed fidgeted a little, nervous. "It worries me when my mom doesn't tell me everything." She finally replied. "She's a Phoenix. The other phoenixes.... they don't like her. Or me. They can be pretty mean a lot of the time."
She, of course, wasn't about to spell out just how mean they could be. There was no reason to list all the times the younger phoenixes her age had made fun of her, or called her mother unfaithful to her mate, or slandered her family name.
At hearing that Atronachs were summoned as companions, she gave a hum of interest. And upon hearing that his summoner had called on him simply for research purposes, she felt sorry for him. "That must be pretty frustrating, having her taking notes on you all the time. It's like she doesn't appreciate your companionship. But you haven't answered my question yet."

She finally answered him straight, albeit being very hesitant. She told him how her mother was a phoenix, which implied that her father was a dog, or some species of a dog. That the other phoenixes bullied her, that they hated the two of them. The obvious assumption was that it was because of the dog side, but it could easily be something else as well. He thought about this for a moment. "Well then, I can see how that would upset you. Though if you're nervous when she doesn't share anything, that would also mean you're nervous if nothing actually happened too. That's a pretty terrible, and albeit stupid way to live." She then pointed out that he too didn't answer her question. He chuckled. "Nice to see your observant. To make the answer clear, I asked her to allow me to stay by her side as often as physically possible. She's been finding creative ways to separate the two of us more and more frequently." He kept all negative emotions hidden, only keeping his smirk showing.
"Now then," he said. "My turn to ask one. Why the hell don't you do anything about the phoenixes bullying your mother and yourself?"

Ryse snorted. "What, you mean attack them? It wouldn't do any good. It would just prove that... that what they say is true." She lit the blade of grass on fire, watching as it turned to ashes in her palm, and dropped the small pile on the ground before brushing the remnants off of her hands. The teenager then leaned back on her hands, looking up at the sky. Little flurries of snow was beginning to fall from the sky, but that didn't really matter to her. She could just warm herself if she got cold. "My mom mostly deals with the bullies. She used to be a soldier in the Ancient War, so she knows how to deal with people like that. It's just-"
She bit her lip and looked away, not wanting to continue. When she spoke next, it was barely above a whisper. "It's not just bullying anymore."
Ryse was silent for a few moments, gathering her thoughts, before asking her next question. "Why would you want to stay by the side of a summoner who only sees you as a research subject? I understand that if she dies you return to your own realm, but I'd think you'd be happy to be away from her sometimes."

Hearing her answer he would be silent for a moment. She had a point.. However. "Well then I will say this. Either your people's leader, or leaders, don't care about you or your mom, or they are total morons and incapable of doing anything to aid either of you. If either of these are the case, then there is easily a method you can use to force them to stop, without being painted in a bad way by your government. And even if there were people who saw the act of self defense as proof they were right why the hell should you care? You can't change their miniscule minds. Because they're idiots trying to feel important by putting down others. Stop caring what idiots think and start caring about what you and your mother want to be and do." He walked over to her and poked her on the shoulder hard.
"That is one of the reasons you're stupid. Letting others determine whether your life is good or bad. If you're too afraid to act in self defense because you're worried about what terrified retards think of you then what's the point? You may as well kill yourself and your mother and be done with it. Then again it would only make the moron assholes satisfied. You want to give them that satisfaction?"
When she asked him why he would want to remain by a summoner as his own, he hesitated. He needed to be very careful, and make it clear that he didn't wish to speak of this. Or redirect her interest. "There's a very personal objective I have on this world. I've got a time limit on it too. I cannot afford to go back home just yet. This is what she's exploited. The fact that I need her and can't go back just yet... This and I'm wondering if it's possible to somehow get her to cooperate."

"What way would that be?" Ryse asked warily. Could there really be a way that would stop the bullying and threats of violence aimed at herself and her mother? She had suggested that her mom pack up their things and move, but the Phoenix refused to leave. She would not be ran out of their home, her mother had said. Ryse knew that Vissarion had an eye kept on the Phoenixes he ruled over; she'd even met him once when she was a hatchling, though she'd been much too young to remember. Did the leader know of the events taking place? "I don't plan on giving anyone that satisfaction. They can go follow the moon god for all I care."
It was clear that Oras didn't want to talk about whatever his personal objective was. But she was curious. Did he have friends here? Family maybe?

Oras laughed at her most recent comment. "Oh really? Well then, you wouldn't be afraid to defend yourselves then. If you truly don't care about them then stop hiding and just do it." He then smirked at her. "As for the how. I have a method yes, but I'm not going to share it just yet. There's a condition on it, seeing as how this method is sort of your 'get out of jail free card'." He walked up to her and placed a finger on her shoulder, pushing against her. His eyes close to hers. "You have to accept your full lineage. Stop running from your grim ancestry and accept it, as well as your phoenix bloodline. If you can accept your own species, then I will do everything in my power to help both you and your mother." He backed off at that point and looked at the sky as the snow fell. "You know.. I'm actually a bit interested to meet your mom now. I sure would like to know how you were born. What your father was like and all. Maybe that would clear up a few things. Like how you're an idiotic and stubborn retard."

"My dad is a Phoenix." Ryse retorted, looking up to slightly glare at him. "He left after I hatched from my egg; he was less than happy to see a strange creature hatch from an egg instead of a bird. My mom swore she was never unfaithful to my dad. So I don't know how I am.... like I am."
There were rumors, of course. Rumors that the Phoenix had ran off with a lowly Church Grim, and had an affair. Other rumors stated that her mother had been cursed after doing some evil deed. Others still implied that her mother was a Grim in disguise; that she wasn't a Phoenix at all. Rumors about Ryse herself said that she was tainted, or that she was cursed. That she was never meant to be born in the first place.
Ryse despised her dad for leaving, but she understood why he did. What was he supposed to think, after seeing her hatch from the egg? A creature that looked nothing like a Phoenix? It would certainly give any sane creature second thoughts about their mate, or any offspring they had. She'd asked her mother countless times over the years to tell her what had happened; why she was the way she was. If the Phoenix that had left was really her father at all.
Her mother had never told her the answer to her question. What she had told her, however, was that the Phoenix was indeed her father, and that despite what others might think of her, her mom loved her very much.
"Accept my lineage? How can I do that when I know what others think of me because of what I am? What others think of my mom because I was born?" She shook her head, pulling out the small wooden charm of Vissarion her mother had made for her and holding it tightly in her hands. "If I knew how it happened, then maybe..... maybe I could. But I know my mom won't tell me. She thinks she's protecting me by not doing so." Knowing her mother, she would keep that fact a secret for as long as she still lived. And considering that Phoenixes were reborn after dying, well, Ryse would have to wait a long time before she got her answer.

Hearing this bit of information caused Oras to pause and think. If the father was a phoenix, then how... She wasn't telling him what did happen so maybe she didn't even know? Oras would have to try and test that little theory. "Then you'll need to explain to me how a Grim's genes made their way into you if your mother only paired with another phoenix. Or maybe you don't know because your mother never told you. And if your dad left you guys because of your appearance then he's possibly the shittiest father ever." This was getting progressively weirder and weirder. She was a hybrid of a phoenix and a grim, when her father and mother were both phoenixes. Perhaps mixing of genes? Was she experimented on at some point? what on earth happened?
When she spoke up again he couldn't believe his ears. Hadn't they just got past this? "Are you kidding? AGAIN I ask: WHY THE HELL DO YOU CARE?! Screw them and whatever they think of you guys! Ignore what idiots think or say. Their words mean jack. If you live your life based on what others decide, then you'll be nothing. You'll live in misery and fear the rest of your life and you'll never get anywhere. Honestly, you're so stupid I'm afraid it's contagious." He shook his head, showing his disappointment and frustration. "I swear. You people never learn. Stand with pride for what you are. Show them who you really are. If they laugh, just laugh back. Show them they can't hurt you. If they try to physically harm you, defend yourself, and don't be afraid of what they say. If they can't hurt you, then you can move on.
I can help you. Not just with your issue with society, but with getting the truth from your mother. But before I do anything, or share how, you have to accept who you are. Regardless of what others think. Can you get that into you're puny skull?"

Ryse sighed. "I already told you. I don't know how it happened. I've tried to get the answer out of my mom for years, but she's never told me."
When Oras practically yelled at her, her scowl grew deeper, and she opened her mouth to give a retort. Then she listened to what the Atronach was saying, and she closed her mouth again. His words did make sense. If she showed others that their words and opinions of her didn't matter, maybe the bullying would stop. She ran her fingers along the wooden charm unconsciously, tracing the details in the wood as she thought.
She didn't have anything to lose by accepting what she was. It was just a few words. But to say them, it meant that she was openly admitting that she was a freak. Which was something she'd fought against admitting for years. Saying what she was out loud would only seal it in stone, make it permanent. However, she would have to accept her lineage if she wanted Oras's help. And she wanted his help very badly.
Gritting her teeth, she clenched her jaw. She struggled with an inner battle for how long, she didn't know. But finally she came to a decision. Oras was the only one who'd offered to help her and her mom. And they needed his help. She couldn't afford to throw the offer away just because she didn't want to accept the truth. ".............okay.... okay, fine. If it's the only way to get your help."
'You're a freak, and you'll always be one.' The words whispered in her head. The same poisonous words that many of the bullies had spat at her. But this time, she shoved the words away. She wasn't going to let them hurt her; not this time.
'I may be a freak. But at least I have someone who accepts me for who I am. For what I am.'
She took a deep breath, and spoke again. "I'm.... a Phoenix and Church Grim hybrid. Happy now?"
There. She'd said it. She'd finally admitted out loud in front of someone what she truly was. It didn't make her feel any better, but at least she'd finally gotten the courage to say it. Which was a big step for her.

He could see the anger building up in here but she then started calming down... Or, tolerating it, he really couldn't tell if he was being honest. He was kind of happy she was steamed right now though. It made being this close to a girl easy for him. Which for him was a very very good thing. It was one of the reasons he liked hanging out with Ryse. She was often super pissed which made it easy to be with. Either pissed or she was easy to trigger if she managed to calm down. When he finished speaking her face began twisting and making multiple expressions. She even grit her teeth. So he was assuming she was having some internal conflict... Would, she really change this easily? If she did he would be beyond amazed... And impressed... Though he highly doubted it.
He waited patiently until she finally opened her mouth and spoke. Before she did she took a deep breath, and told him that she is a Phoenix and a Grim hybrid. She then asked if he was happy now, clearly stressed from whatever internal war she had just gotten through. He scoffed. "My request was that you would come to accept your lineage. Not admit it. There is a very big difference between the two of them. The main one being that admitting it shows guilt, shame, and even anger or doubt. Whereas accepting it shows peace, contentment. Even pride. If you admit it, that only opens opportunities for those bullies to attack you with. If you accept it, then no matter what they say it doesn't affect you. Because you have come to accept who you are. However:" He raised his hand and placed it on her shoulder. Not aggressively, yet not quite comfortingly either. Somewhere in the middle. "It's a starting point. So for now, it will do."
Oras let go and started to walk back to the Academy. "If you really want my help, then come to me a week from today! Take some time to think this over."

Ryse was quiet as she listened to Oras, looking up at him. Accepting her Grim heritange.... that was something she wasn't ready to do. If he expected her to do so right after speaking to him, then he was going to be disappointed. However, it seemed that he was satisfied with her admitting it. Which was fine with her.
The Atronach began walking away, then, saying to meet with him in a week if she still wanted his help. "Wait. I have two more questions for you." She said, putting the charm safely back in her pocket. "You said you had a personal objective here on this world. If you don't mind me asking.... what is it?"
Oras had asked a lot of questions about her today. A lot of personal questions that she wouldn't ordinarily tell another person. Asking one personal question of him didn't seem like something so bad.
"Also, I don't know if you want to meet at your dorm.... or if you want to meet back here at the training grounds. I don't know which dorm you're in."

As he walked away he heard her call to him, asking him to wait. He stopped and turned to look at her. "Whaaaat, what could you possibly want now?" He listened as she continued, and much to his great dismay she asked him what his goal in this world was. His face made no change in expression from his annoyance, but inwardly.. He mentally sighed. This was a topic he didn't want to talk about. It was very personal for him and, well it would ruin much of what he had been building up all this time if he just told people. However he couldn't give her no answer. They had made a promise. He wouldn't stretch the truth, change the truth, or give no answer at all.
"You'll find me in the Sage dorms during the night hours. During the day I'll be chasing my summoner until she gives up and let's me escort her everywhere." He turned around so his back was to her. Unable to hold the expression any longer. His face growing a bit heavy as he looked towards the academy. "As for what I have to do. I made a promise... And I intend to keep it." And with that, he would walk away without another word.
