welcome to Eldritch Academy
In a world of myths and mysteries, the pinnacle of the magical academies exists. Eldritch Academy offers education to all ages and species but specializes in the study and training of one's innate mystical capabilities, often called Eldritch Energies, Powers, or Unknowns, but more formally known as their Talent. However, tensions run high with the nations only holding a fragile peace as the Talents that rival the epitomes of technology change the balance of power.
With the more recent uprising of evil Shades and introduction of combat-oriented programs into Talent-focused schools, nations grow more aggressive towards one another. The demand for resources grows, and skirmishes at the border of Arka and Mistere become more frequent. Monsters run into the nations from the Wildes, terrorizing villages and cities. The need for trained or in-training Hunters and Guardians has never been more urgent.

“I don’t know what I expected, but I was disappointed anyway,” says Esialeth, rolling her eyes. “Bye.”
She summons her wings, the scent of her jasmine-frost aether cloying in the enclosed space, and flies upward, sitting on the edge of the stone wall. “I might leave,” she says casually, swinging her legs over the ledge. “Bake some pastries for Christmas. I’m sure you know the way back.” She smiles, fake as ever, and moves to take off once again.

"Wait!" his wings appear amazingly fast. "Don't." he lands on the thin precipice of the enclosure Esialeth made and is now sitting on, thin, long feet supporting his weight fully on his tip-toes. "Why do you want to leave?" He folds his hands, and looks at her, "Patience, right?" he says, reminding them of the beginnings of their conversation. LAIKA OF THQ

Esialeth huffed out a wry laugh; despite his flaunting, he really was younger than her, both in mind and body. Her sun-gold eyes glance to the side, and—feeling rather than seeing him standing behind her—she takes off, hovering by the ledge.
“Patience is not the same as inaction,” she says, annoyed. “Don’t bother me until you know the difference.”
And with that, she flies into the midmorning sky.

"Wait! What?" he says, voice only slightly raised. He climbs into the air again. Esialeth must know that he can easily catch up to her. Keep her there easily, if he wanted. "At least lower the walls you created. I'd hate to see this place be tarnished," he says, with a twinge of something... Annoyance? Intent of offense? In his voice. Nevertheless, he moves faster into the sky, billowing upwards and diving in front of Esialeth's path. "Don't... Leave. You don't even celebrate Christmas. Neither do I." LAIKA OF THQ

Esialeth waves her hand and hears the sound of shifting stone behind her. “There, all done. And maybe the pastries are for my sociopathic roommate. I’m trying to teach her empathy and compassion. Even if she doesn’t celebrate Christmas, she’s sure to appreciate free food. Especially if it’s something I baked.”
She carefully did not mention that she had spent most of her past Christmases hiding from her family, or on the run. Instead, she slipped into the calm, detached mask of a mentor, and when she spoke again, she took care to make sure that her voice did not shake. “Unless you learn to fight, you’re never going to use that as a lance. Which is fine by me, but it also makes the ‘sparring’ idea pretty useless.”

"You're right," another fake concession to digress Esialeth's annoyance. "I can use it as a stave... It's just. You're so focused on weapons. Blades, sharp things," he pauses, sighing, whisper-quiet, "And I don't like blood. I'm a doctor. I make blood go away," he rides his wave of conversation, words becoming slightly more emotional, feeling a glossiness come to his eyes, "And you're not. You wouldn't understand. No one ever hurts each other where I'm from," he cuts himself off with a frustrated groan, "You've become just like her," he blurts out, not sure if Esialeth knows of who he's talking about. His old mentor, mother figure, most-hated but also most-loved person. Only quiet mutterings of his mind talk about her anymore. "It's fine. I don't want it to learn it anyways. Things are always choosing me," he finishes the next part slightly quieter, "Of course I get a fucking pike as a talent," he breathes out and turns around, plummeting back to the ground without any of his former grace. Banishing her wings in a flood of aether, she drops like a stone, landing heavily on the ground.
It’s quiet for a long time before she speaks, whisper-soft. “Do you know why I find such fascination with weaponry?”
She allows her air to still before continuing. “Back in Hisakawa, there was...there was this blacksmith who specialized in weaponry. The whole town used to go to her, but then a chain popped up and threatened to ruin her business…and she had a daughter.
"So I bought every single thing she had available. I spent all of my money, enough for her daughter to go to school for the year, and I hid the weapons. I also drove the chain out of town."
She tilts her head, carefully detached. "Of course, they still found out."
She swallows. “You don’t need weapons to hurt people.”
Her voice is like ice, precise and beautiful and cold. “Those weapons were the only reason I survived the night.”

He listens to his story with disscontempt, feeling pity—no, empathy—for the blacksmith and her daughter, but none for Esialeth. "That's... That's entirely your fault. You must know that. Weapons are for those disillusioned with fake intelligence. To defend against their mistakes," he pauses, voice fluttering with the warmth of a heartfelt speech, emotions, For those who don't connect with those around them," his brow furls angrily, then he sighs as it disappears as his skin unwrinkles, "I suppose I can't blame you though, considering your background," he says with a softer, slightly sunnier voice. "She didn't ask for your help. Maybe it ended up benefiting her in the end... But..." he derails for a short moment, "You used her creations. Sweat and love put into them, loving tools that which paved her daughter's future and dirtied them. She probably would be better off without you. The world is ever changing, she cannot be protected forever from your privileged misdeed," he says, "I can't look at you. I don't want to know what you did that night." He almost spits his words, but his silvery, calm voice remains oddly moderate in its volume.
He unfurls his wings, instinctively, making him look larger. His left hand sparkles, and with a undulating, twisting light, his fated spear appears in his hand. "I don't know you anymore," he brandishes the weapon, planting it into the snow-covered ground, with the pointed edge slightly tilted in Esialeth's direction. "I think I know... why this is my talent now," Seth finishes, with an anguished look on his face, somewhere between anger and sadness, tears easily streaming down the sides of his cheeks. Her face is barren. Empty. The wind howls around them; it’s noon, the peak of the day, yet the air has never felt colder nor darker. She makes no move to raise her sword.
“Is that how little you think of me?” she whispers, her voice almost lost in the wind, her voice shaking with anger or hopelessness or melancholy. “Do you think they were just some people I saw and took pity on? Yuki was my friend! And Kae was like my—” She stops. “My m—”

His faces scrunches up, eyes squinting tears out of the way of its cornea. "You know nothing about friendship. You think what you did was friendship? You think this is friendship" he stifles a sob, "No... Everyone... Is a project for you. Something you can fix... Repair. You don't see equals. You're the golden, shining standard," he stops himself before he treads anymore into lands offensive.
He tries to steady his breath, but upon failure finds himself receding back upon an old Alatum chant, sung to him by long-removed parents, “Lux… …lux…Magno splendore lunari custos… Parce mihi ut petendo fuga est accountability quia actus procedentes… quia necesse est propter arbitrium pacis erit effectum.” An old incantation sung by solo, lonely Alatum warriors before doing the unimaginable.
...
His lance responds in turn with the prayer and within the star-shaped blade, silver light pulsates... Resonates within the lance, capturing the very winds themselves. A strong tailwind forms behind Seth, gracefully enveloping and avoiding his form, with its wintery might steeping in front of him, proceeding towards Esialeth. It stops, however, as soon as the first powdery frost brushes against her skin. The hallowed winds snap frozen, after which every individual snowflake explodes into a flash of mesmerizing, familiar light. LAIKA OF THQ

Frost.
Esialeth’s eyes jolt open, her body slamming into the memory as if by the gods themselves; she is on the ground, surrounded by the scent of hardy jasmine and early spring frost. Someone’s standing over her, their form limned by the light from an overcast sky.
“Hey, Essie, what’re you doing? Get up! It’s gross and cold on the ground.”
The revelation would have sent her reeling, had she any sort of control over her faculties.
Hisakawa. The last spring. Yuki’s house.
She feels herself rise from the ground, feels melted frost clinging to her hands; it’s as if she’s spectating. But she remembers this conversation.
“Okay, where were we again? Parrying! Right. So some people think you need a shield to deflect hits, but if you do it right, you really only need a sword.” Yuki demonstrates with her sword, her eyes gleaming with enthusiasm.
“...right,” she feels herself say, shakily imitating her friend’s stance. “So, like this…?”
“No, silly! Do this—” a hand on her arm— ”and relax here—” a presence behind her, a breath against the back of her neck— and Esialeth feels her stomach drop, just like the first time— “and you’re about set!”
“Right,” she says again, trying madly to calm her rapidly beating heart. “I think—are you sure we should be doing this?” She drops her sword, the mood dropping with it. “Even if...I can’t imagine…”
“Hey.” Yuki puts both hands on her shoulders, her face softening. “Relax, man. I’m just teaching you the defense. And besides…” she changes her voice. “‘I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend.’”
Esialeth feels herself gasp in surprise, her anxiety momentarily forgotten. “You actually read it!”
Yuki snorts in mock derision. “Yeah, of course I did. Now try again! Mom wants us back for dinner.”
The memory fades, and Esialeth finds herself alone in the darkness.

Storm clouds swirl and hum with their angst. He closes his eyes to shield them from illusory snow. Warmth blesses his eyes. Tears... Not his own, however.
He wonders, claws at his mind. Where is he? He sees no familiarity, but a scene cast before him. It silently reminds him of recent events, only less twisted. A fleeting moment of clarify washing over him. "Niðgeisl," words leave his lips, silent, but with enough carried power to change the scene. Mist swirls and the storm resumes. Maybe another scene will play out? LAIKA OF THQ

An anonymous order. Ten thousand gold pieces’ worth of weaponry, shipped to a mages’ school in the west. A letter sent three days in advance. A passenger ship that leaves in the dead of night.
I can't use my money unless I want to be found, she thinks. It's for the best. Please, please be enough.
She tosses the piles upon piles of accounting work into the fire; there is nowhere to burn them but in the fireplaces of her parents’ house, for she cannot leave lest it be for the last time, and not until every connection to them is severed.
A shadow in the doorway, a jolt of fear, and she tosses the last scrap of paper in the fireplace; she is too scared and they are too angry to notice the way the fire flares a little brighter, burns a little faster—and she runs to her room, the only room in the house without a lock—grabs whatever she has packed—and runs.
But she is weak and her bag is heavy, so it is only a matter of time before they catch up to her. A gauntlet on her shoulder, cold and gut-wrenching and painful; she is spun around, handed a sword, and faced with three armed guards.
It is only by title and blade that she escapes, the guards fearful of hurting her permanently and the borrowed sword fending off the bolder ones. Parry, trap, block—a slash on her forearm—trap, parry—and the last guard lets her go, thinking she’ll be back by morning.
She’s out of the country before dawn.

He calls out a not-familiar but recently oft-spoken name, "Niðgeisl." It's all that's needed before the storm once again continues, whirling from a cold, icy sleet into a hot, tropical cyclone crackling with lightning.
The storm quells, but only momentarily, before taking on a completely new form. Out of mist... Fog, trees form, tall, wide-leaved and strong. An Alatum village. Leaves rustle as a tropical storm rages overhead, villages guarded by the canopy of leaves, but their nest-houses swaying slightly in the aftermath.
"Come now, my Chan Hee, we've got more important matters than those outside." A younger voice, not yet into adolescence, "But... But me, mother and father would always play in the rain." "I did not ask a question, Seohee. Your training is important for the future of our village. Without me and later, you, who would our people turn to. You may dislike it now—just as I did—but you may find if you embrace it... Face it with bravery, headfirst..." she sighs, "I wish that you could choose for yourself, young one. If not you... Then who else."
The nest sways again in the breeze and a younger Seth feels tears roll down his cheek. "Can I sleep with them tonight..? Nanna..." She nods, reluctantly. Excited but sad flutters of his wings bring him back to his mother's and father's tent.
—
Seth feels tears drip down his chin. It comes out with a stutter, "N... Niðgeisl" LAIKA OF THQ

Still reeling from the shock of the memory, Esialeth can only stare as she’s swept into another; this one is not hers, and her mind is far too stripped to think. The hot air sweeps around her, and she hears voices—one faintly familiar, the other less so—and forces herself to focus.
She remains silent as the scene plays out. So he was forced into a destiny as well, she thinks. Although he didn’t reject it like I did.
