welcome to Eldritch Academy
In a world of myths and mysteries, the pinnacle of the magical academies exists. Eldritch Academy offers education to all ages and species but specializes in the study and training of one's innate mystical capabilities, often called Eldritch Energies, Powers, or Unknowns, but more formally known as their Talent. However, tensions run high with the nations only holding a fragile peace as the Talents that rival the epitomes of technology change the balance of power.
With the more recent uprising of evil Shades and introduction of combat-oriented programs into Talent-focused schools, nations grow more aggressive towards one another. The demand for resources grows, and skirmishes at the border of Arka and Mistere become more frequent. Monsters run into the nations from the Wildes, terrorizing villages and cities. The need for trained or in-training Hunters and Guardians has never been more urgent.

Ahh. The library. If there was ever a place Ryse felt more at ease besides her own room it was here. The shelves of books, holding all kinds of knowledge, was somewhere she could get lost in for hours. Not very many people came here, and those that did were quiet and were busy with studies of their own. Here she was content. As of the moment the table she was sitting at had a small stack of books on it. Mostly she liked reading about history and culture - which was one of the reasons why she found Professor Theo's exploration class to be so appealing - but she also liked reading fiction. Right now she was roaming the shelves, but not for one of those subjects. She was looking for any kind of lore on Church Grim she could find.
Considering that she was half Grim herself, doing research on the species would possibly give her answers on how they were created and any facts on it. Maybe if she found information about it she would know how she came to be. Did they bite people like werewolves and spread their genes that way? Did they have a certain ritual that was done to create them? She was grasping at straws at this point. Here in the library, in one of the most renowned schools there were, there must be some sort of book that could give her some kind of clue. Her mother would never give her any answers, so she would have to find that out on her own.

Wandering the library in the midmorning, she has found, is a soothing pursuit. Fiction, history, and science, all within a few steps, but only if one knows to harness the ambient aether in the room, which is another pursuit in itself. She could simply use the Dewey decimal system and save herself some magic, but she likes to reserve that skill for desperate times. And librarians.
The librarians are mysterious. It is said they could tell what book you needed just by looking at you, and they could take your voice away with a word. Of course, Professor Rose is no librarian, nor does she feel the compulsion to deal with her students any more than is dictated in her syllabus. Still, those who spend considerable amounts of time in libraries, particularly the magical, Unseen-University kind, are wont to develop an ephemeral perceptiveness while wandering through its shelves. The professor feels far more inclined to follow the threads of magic in libraries, for they are familiar to her; perhaps that is why, when she sees a lone girl wandering the shelves, she does not turn away.
"Are you looking for something, dear? You look a touch lost."

The teenager searched through the shelves, scanning the titles of the books. She was in the species section, now she just needed to find the book labeled 'Church Grim'....
A sudden voice caused her to look up, and Ryse saw a woman with pink hair making her way over to her. She blinked in confusion at the question. Lost? "No, I don't think so. I'm just looking for a specific book. Though I'm having trouble finding it." That is, if the library even had a book on Church Grim. It may be possible there was no such book. But there were scholars who'd done research on them, right? There had to be one here somewhere.
She took a closer look at the woman. She wasn't one of the librarians. Was she a faculty member? "Are you a teacher? Or do you just work at the school?" There were plenty of other people that weren't professors that worked here, who had other jobs. Or maybe she was a newly hired teacher. She'd never seen the woman before.

"Professor Rose! I'm new." She giggles a little, as if sharing an inside joke with herself. "But I can probably help you find what you need. I'm quite familiar with this library. And, well, libraries in general."
The Academy library is one of the most extensive in the world, with books on every subject under the sun (and some elsewhere, as well). There were many ways to find what one needed: simply closing your eyes and letting the flow of magic guide you (relishing in the strange looks from passers-by), the database search (which might conveniently miss the very books you're looking for), hand-to-hand combat with the librarians (exceedingly difficult. Rose is wise enough not to try), and, as a last resort, the Dewey Decimal system (which she was familiar with but was feverently reluctant to use).
She doubted the girl knew many of these, however; she had the glow of true youth, which, combined with her sweet demeanor, practically forced the professor to offer her help.
"What are you looking for, then?"

So this woman was a teacher. Huh. She didn't smell quite human, but then again nobody at this school did. Everyone was either one kind of strange species or another. "What do you teach?" She didn't seem like the kind of person to teach a subject like math or some elementary subject, so maybe she taught something like a specialization class for one of the Masteries? Perhaps a class for Hunters where the students were taught how to fight against monsters? Or maybe one that taught defensive spells to student Guardians? There was an entire list of subjects she could name.
When Professor Rose asked her what kind of book she was looking for, Ryse began looking at the shelves instead of at the teacher, avoiding her gaze. "Uh, well I'm looking for a book on Church Grim. Mostly one on lore and species information." She didn't say the reason why she wanted the book in the first place. She hoped the teacher would just pass it off as idle curiosity. Normally she wouldn't ask for help, but maybe the teacher could help her find it. It would save her a lot of time and trouble.

What did she teach? What a fascinating question. The professor smiles mysteriously. "Officially? Theory of magic. Unofficially?" Her voice loses some of its formal edge. "Everything else. Like baroque flute, or, alternatively, how to make baroque flutes. Horrible instrument, really, but we all have our hobbies. Ah, but enough of that!" She gestures excitedly, unwilling to provoke the librarians' ire by clapping. "Church grim, yes? Fascinating subject, but I can't say I've studied it extensively...it just seems like they're coming out with new species every week! I can hardly keep up. Those enchanted pendants aren't going to make themselves."
She pauses, thoughtful. "Actually...wait, no. Focus, yes?" She shakes her head slightly. "If you're looking for extensive research on a particular subject, there is a spell that might pull some books from places you'd not think to look. Of course, that depends on how invested you are."
She tilts her head, glancing at the girl, who seemed to be avoiding her gaze. "How invested are you...? Well, that's not really my business. I'll hook you up with the introductory stuff for now. Church Grim in general would be..."
While the professor sorts through the threads in the aether, the air around them seems to thicken with magic—and passers-by might have caught a hint of jasmine and spring frost. "Here!" She spins through the shelves with the confidence of a dancer, hoping that Ryse would follow.

Ryse gives the professor a curious look. Theory of Magic? That sounded interesting. The other things she said - like making an instrument she'd never heard of before - sounded less interesting, but it intrigued her to know that the woman had some sort of strange hobby. Everyone had one, she guessed. Like with herself. In her spare time, she liked to draw scenery. Maybe not the weirdest hobby, but it was one she enjoyed.
Her eyes widened slightly as she heard that there was a spell that could allow her to find information from different books. "There's really a spell like that?" It shouldn't surprise her, since magic existed in the world after all. Being able to attend a school where so many different species could mingle and interact with each other was a clear indication of that. Had she known about this spell she would've used it some time ago.
As the teacher began twirling through the shelves, the student hesitated for a moment, before following. She was curious now, both about the location of the book she was looking for and the person who'd she just met. The professor smelled like jasmine, which she hadn't noticed before. She wondered if the teacher was using the spell she mentioned to find the book. Scanning the new set of shelves, she saw a book with the title 'The Extensive Guide to Church Grim: Lore, Myths, and General Facts'. Picking up the book, and leafing through some of the pages, she looked back up at the professor and gave the woman a smile. She wasn't sure if it had all the information she needed, but this was a good start. "Thank you Professor."

"Ah, my dear—what is your name? You look like a Ryse—but you know, I could be wrong." She cringes a bit inwardly at this tiniest reveal of information she shouldn't know, then brushes it off. I just seem mystic now. A good trait for a professor to have. "Anyway—there are many spells like that. You could even make your own! Magic isn't just memorizing spells out of books, you know, and I would strongly advise ignoring anyone who tries to convince you otherwise. Read others' work, draw inspiration from it, accept assistance from others, but at the end of the night, your magic is yours. Ah, but I'm rambling again..."
The professor drifts off, trailing her fingers along the spines of a few books, before turning back to the girl. She has such a nice smile. I hope she has a lot of friends. "You seem like a nice kid. Should you need more help with this subject, my office is open! Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons, or every day at dawn, forty-ninth floor of the Astronomy tower. People usually prefer afternoons, though. I can't imagine why." It's hard to tell if she's being sarcastic or not. "It's the top floor and I have a big window, so feel free to fly up and knock on the glass if you don't feel like taking the stairs. I can show you how I make my spells, you could learn how to make your own...cool stuff!"

"Um.. yeah, my name is Ryse. How did you know?" The hybrid wondered, her eyes widening in shock. Could the professor reads minds?! Or - an even worse thought - was she being talked about in school by the other students? She wouldn't be surprised.
"I can make my own magic? I don't know any spells, though. I mean... I can do this." She held up a hand and a bright lick of flame appeared on her palm, which was extinguished when she closed her palm into a fist. "But it's not a spell. I don't chant anything, it just... happens, I guess." What kind of magic could she create? She didn't even know where to start. And she hadn't even thought about creating her own spells in the first place. She wasn't sure if it was possible for her.
The professor’s office hours were strange to be sure. Who had their hours open at dawn? Afternoons were more acceptable for most students, since they were either sleeping or studying in the morning. For her, though, waking up at dawn wasn’t an issue. She did that every day, on the dot. Why was the professor’s room so high up in the tower? She didn’t know the school had and Astronomy tower in the first place. Maybe it was because she hadn’t been everywhere in the school yet… most of the time if she wasn’t in her classes she was either in her room, or in the library. Or somewhere else that was quiet. The top of a tower sounded like a good place to study. Nobody would bother her there--
She paused. Had the teacher mentioned flying? Did a lot of the students here have that ability? Yeah. That must be it. There was no way the Professor knew she was half phoenix. No way! “Why is your classroom on the forty-ninth floor, Professor?” Maybe she liked the view? Up that high, one could possibly see most of the school campus.

Shit. She's onto me. "Ah, you know, just the grapevine. No one's gossiping, really. I'm not a mind reader. That would impose on free will, and that! Is the worst." The professor clears her throat deliberately. "With spells, if it's more your style to do dynamic sorcery than ritualistic arcana, that's definitely a viable option. Of course, you can combine them, and it never hurts to learn both...well, certain people can be more skilled at certain types of magic. It's like intuition vs. sensing, thinking vs. feeling, perceiving vs. judging sort of thing...but I find that such descriptions are limiting, to be honest. Anyone can do anything as long as they have the passion and drive. Also, nothing in this world actually matters." She smiles serenely. "That fire is definitely a manifestation of your natural magic...but I'm getting ahead of myself. Office hours, office hours!"
She spins around to face Ryse. "I blackmailed the administration into giving me that spot. It's got a great view and," here she smiles deceptively mildly, "deters all but the most determined of visitors. There is only so much foolishness I can tolerate in one day, after all. But you are very sweet! If you knocked on the window—you can fly, yes? That's not a grapevine thing, I'm just intuitive—If you knocked on the window, I wouldn't keep it locked like I sometimes do. Just remember to wear trousers. Or don't; I think that would be sort of a power move, would it not? I can smite perverts from the window."

Ryse raised an eyebrow in confusion as the professor started speaking about different types of magic. Dynamic sorcery? Ritualistic arcana? What did those terms mean? She wasn’t versed in such things as the woman was, so these words were flying over her head. Maybe she should look into this subject. It was definitely interesting. Even if she didn’t plan on using magic or creating spells, knowing information about it was always helpful. And… what did she mean when she said nothing in this world actually mattered?
When she heard that the teacher blackmailed the faculty into giving her that spot, both her eyebrows rose. “You… you blackmailed the faculty?” What sort of teacher was she? What did she blackmail them with? Why did she have to blackmail them in the first place? Surely none of the other professors had claimed that classroom all the way near the top of the tower…
The student blinked as the professor guessed - quite accurately - that she could fly. “Y-yeah, I can fly. But I’m more comfortable with walking… so I’ll just walk. I need the exercise anyways.” She rubbed the back of her head sheepishly.
Unlike other phoenixes, she wasn’t able to partially transform. It meant that she wouldn’t be able to just summon her wings whenever she wanted to fly. Either she fully transformed - which she could use her invisibility in order to hide herself, though the professor couldn’t see her when she knocked on the window which could lead to her being shot out of the sky - or she would walk. In her mind, walking was a safer option.

"Oh dear, I'm speaking in jargon again...remind me to stop when I do that, will you? Things are usually simpler than they seem at first. Dynamic sorcery is just magic you do on the fly, and ritualistic arcana is stuff you prepare for...like, if you had to draw out some runes, that would be considered arcana...you know how it is." The professor is almost sure that she does not, in fact, know how it is, but she quite enjoys her turns of phrase and naysayers would have to pry them from her cold, dead hands.
"Blackmail is such a harsh term...I was exaggerating, if you must know. I simply implied to them that given the sheer amount of research funding I acquire in the name of the school, they're in no position to object to my mostly harmless demands. Of course, they still stuck me with a roommate, but we can't win every battle now, can we?"
"Anyway!" She almost claps her hands, but then she remembers the librarians and stops. The result looks a bit like she's trying to conjure miniature clouds in her hands with the power of thought alone. Which she could, in fact, do, and which would make her look a little less undignified, but those are Fourth Thoughts and four is an unlucky number. "I could probably, I don't know, rig up a local teleport network for transportation up and down the tower, but I find that it's better to ponder things. The stairs are quite conducive to that. But are you sure you don't want to fly? Even if I'm listening to music or something, I have, you know," and she enunciates the next words very clearly, "Cool Magic Senses. Even if I were turned away from you, I could probably still sense you there. Probably..." She gazes out the high windows absently.

Ryse indeed did not know what it was like to draw runes for a spell. She'd never cast magic like that in her life. However, she decided not to state so, focusing her attention on the rest of the things the professor told her. It made her feel better knowing that Rose hadn't actually blackmailed anyone. She shook her head when the teacher mentioned putting together something to get her up and down. There was no need for her to go through such work when she had her legs which worked perfectly fine.
When Professor Rose stated she could sense her even when her back was turned, it made Ryse pause in thought. If she was invisible, the teacher couldn't see her anyways, and her being able to sense that she was there would make it easier than having to climb up all those flights of stairs....
"I.... guess I could fly up to your room. You said you'd be able to sense that I'm there? Even if I'm... invisible? Speaking hypothetically."

"Speaking hypoethetically!" she manages to crow despite her voice never rising above a half-whisper. "Yes. To be honest, my eyes aren't that good, even after..." She trails off. "Nevermind." She shakes her head slightly, and whatever melancholy she carried disappears. "Well, my eyes aren't that good, so I have other methods. Aether is the lifeblood of this planet, and reading and analyzing it is revealing, if not fascinating. I always try to get students to learn, you know, but most of them are obsessed with flashy spells and chainsaw-blades." She traces the hilt of the sword hanging at her hip. "For the record, if one can read the aether, they can end a fight before it even begins, and...simple steel is the best material for swords; it's stronger than gold or silver and has more potential for it. Contrary to popular belief, steel can be enchanted; it just takes a lot of skill. Oh, but I'm rambling again..."
Talking about her eyesight seems to have saddened her. The professor gazes wistfully at the bookshelves, her face turned away from the girl. She slides a book from the shelf—Wintersong—and speaks, her clarion alto soft. "I should get going, then. I hope you found what you needed."

The teenager tilts her head a little in confusion upon hearing the professor's words. She had a problem with her eyesight? Because of something magic related? Or perhaps it was something more normal, like age or cataracts or something along those lines. Ryse wondered whether or not her fire ability would be able to heal it.... doing so would be delicate work and she'd never done something that required much delicacy before. If she messed up, she could cause the teacher to have worse vision than before or perhaps even go blind.
For now, however, she would only catalog the information away. Perhaps she could look up a book or two about eye anatomy, or speak to Nurse Beatrice about the subject. She wasn't even sure if such a thing were possible. But if it was, maybe she could help the professor in fixing her eyesight. It seemed like the woman was sad about it, and she wanted to do something to help.
"Yeah, I should probably get back to my studying." She said when Rose mentioned having to leave. "Thank you for helping me, again. It was nice meeting you, Professor Rose. Is it okay if I come by on Monday morning? I'd like to talk more about um... Grim... and other things." Maybe the teacher knew information she did not. But even if she didn't, they could talk about magic or whatever else they would like. And since it would be dawn, nobody else would be up yet.
