In a world of myths and mysteries, the pinnacle of the magical academies exists. Eldritch Academy offers education to all ages and species but specializes in the study and training of one's innate mystical capabilities, often called Eldritch Energies, Powers, or Unknowns, but more formally known as their Talent. However, tensions run high with the nations only holding a fragile peace as the Talents that rival the epitomes of technology change the balance of power.
With the more recent uprising of evil Shades and introduction of combat-oriented programs into Talent-focused schools, nations grow more aggressive towards one another. The demand for resources grows, and skirmishes at the border of Arka and Mistere become more frequent. Monsters run into the nations from the Wildes, terrorizing villages and cities. The need for trained or in-training Hunters and Guardians has never been more urgent.

Believe it or not, Ozaki had actually thought about that a bit. That, however, did not mean he accepted or liked those thoughts. He absolutely loathed that he could even remotely sympathize with hunters like Askel, or even Yuuto. There were dangerous creatures out there that needed culling. They might not be able to help it because of their nature, but that did not mean they could be permitted to continue.
He himself had taken care of a few of those types. Moral ambiguity was something hunters had to walk hand in hand with at times. Hell. He should know, he worked in a department that was worked in stocking tons of things. Many of which could have potentially been a student at their academy if life had taken a different turn.
… If he hadn’t found a way to manage his own vampirism he’d likely have been amongst those culled by the hunters the Academy put out every year. The fact he had been given an opportunity at Eldritch Academy rather than killed by it was either a miracle in disguise or a freak occurrence.
At the time when he had seen Fluffy with that deer skull it had hit him full on what it truly meant to be a blood devil. And that while there might be a way for a blood devil to integrate… If Nyx regained her memories from that life that might not be a possibility. After the things Ozaki had done he was of the belief that people should be given a second chance. Even if he himself did not truly believe he deserved his own, the fact he had been given one could not be ignored.
If he were to draw logical conclusions based on what a blood devil was, she’d likely killed far more than the ten he had. Even Alise, his blood devil contact, was of the impression she may have been on the more extreme side for blood devils.
Ozaki wanted to get riled up at what Sharaku was saying, but he was right about everything. It was very possible that wiping her memories was the only way to give Nyx a second chance. But he was trying to kill her now… Which may almost be fair considering her memories seemed to be coming back and she could very easily turn back into that same murderous person as before.
Killing her would be the better option if she turned back into that... More people would be spared. The numbers were simple when you looked at them like that. But what right did he of all people have to make such a call? If Ozaki applied such logic to himself he’d have staked himself for the trouble he’d caused years ago. And if he didn’t yet applied it to others it’d make him a hypocrite.
“Well what do you suggest we do? Make sure she doesn’t get her memories back and have a talk with the guy who’s out to kill her telling him that we have it handled?” He was being sarcastic of course. Frankly that was the only thing he could think to say right now. Ozaki didn’t want to tell anyone what his current thoughts of Nyx were.
He wasn't normally one to resort to sarcasm but... Frankly as terrible as a suggestion as that was… Maybe it was an option? He was trying to use sarcasm to veil the fact that that might very well be an actual solution that he had even thought of for a second. Nyx would have to start from ground zero, but there was at least the potential the people around her could help her become better than what her previous self had been.

He’d stare at the vampire for a while, heavily debating how to respond to this. His first was to laugh at it, but as blunt and forward he was, he wasn’t socially inept to the point of not being aware that such a reaction would be a terrible one to roll with. It was highly doubtful the guy would take it in good humor, given the touchy subject at hand. Truth to be told however, he didn’t have much against the suggestion. It was a possibility, were it done right, and they ensured those lacking memories wouldn’t cause her any issues as time went. She did need to change her stance towards fighting and violence, but without doing it through old memories, she could at least keep herself in line. Personally, he did not believe it was mostly about nature. If that was the case, there’d be weekly reports of Blood Devils having to be detained and suppressed due to being a huge danger. That wasn’t happening however. They might have the instinct to kill, but they also had the power of choice. Clearly, Fluffy had chosen such a blood-filled path herself. Being a Blood Devil alone was not the true cause, and she had been like that before she even…became one, right? Hadn’t the Fluffy they’ve met said she was a demon cat species at the point in time they were talking to her? Yet she was already following a God and massacring people. The problem was largely her personality and beliefs, not her species. Even someone of a normally peaceful race could turn into a dangerous monster were they to choose that path.
“….That, is an option. I can’t say no to that. Assuming there is a way to make it so said lack of memories isn’t harming her somehow, it could be a solution. My answer is to do what’s the best for both her and everyone around her. Or at least the best average of those. Whatever that turns out to be down the road. Either something gets done, or we let it play out as it will, but then it will be too late to regret not making a decision in time in case the worst happens.” It was what it was. One way or another, her situation was not a simple one, and did not have a simple, easy solution to it. Unlike the vampire though, he was certainly willing to do what had to be done, if that’s what proved to be the most efficient option. His capability to not get easily emotional about matters, and stay more rational about it, while potentially seen as cutthroat in social situations was also perhaps a perfect skill for a hunter. Some would hate him for it, but the world was never quite fair in the first place. One day, you’d be lucky and get treated with kindness, and the next someone would let you die instead of saving you.
Either way, a decision would have to be made at some point, and it probably had to be soon. “Besides, can you call yourself her father if you avoid making a call about it? You made her your responsibility by putting yourself in that position. I’m simply offering a point of view that ought to be considered. I can make suggestions all I want, but I’ll assume you wouldn’t want me making the final decision if you really care for her as a parent. That also means it’s kind of on you however.” |

Not making a choice was still making a choice. Letting her continue on the path she was on right now would more likely than not end in someone like Fluffy. Nyx potentially had a chance. Sure she’d have to be coaxed out of conditioning that had taught her to disregard and ignore her own pain and species instincts. That would be difficult. Pulling back a full blown zealot in a religion dedicated to the eradication of life however... Damn it all. This was why Ozaki hated religion so much. It made people think they were in the right no matter how much wrong they were doing. They could rationalize it away by just reasoning away that it was for a higher purpose.
But would it be selfish of him to go down this path just to keep the Nyx he liked? Wasn’t it a parent’s duty to love their child no matter what? He didn’t know what to do here. It wasn’t like he had the best example for parental figures. Yuuto was still trying to kill him for being a vampire. And whoever his sire had been had ditched him shortly after turning him. Somehow Ozaki was doubting that there were any parenting books that covered this scenario.
There were more lives than just his and Nyx at stake here. If she crossed the line he might have to be the one to kill her. Only the problem there was it wouldn’t be a permanent solution there. She’d just come back. According to Alise Nyx would be more mellow after coming back but... it wasn’t her instincts Ozaki was needing to worry about. It was her base belief system. Ozaki rubbed at the bridge of his nose, screwing his eyes shut for a moment. He didn’t want to say that he just didn’t know what to do again. Sharaku wouldn’t leave it be there and it wasn’t good enough to just leave it be. Ozaki has to come up with some sort of solution. He was kind of glad Sharaku hadn’t reacted terribly negatively to the idea.
It made him feel a little less shitty for having the idea in the first place. “I… I need some time alone to think on this.” But it was still an idea that made him feel horrible. Plus if Dawn caught wind of it she’d probably try and kill him for real. Would it be possible to actually wipe her memories at this point? That would be something else he’d have to research. Her past life was something that should probably be left to her past… But he didn’t know how to do any of that. Honestly Ozaki felt so out of his depth in so many ways it wasn't even funny.

He probably should have started walking away to indicate that he wanted to end this conversation. Because Sharaku did not get at all that that had been an attempt to end it. Or maybe he had and that was why he was pushing. If he tried to leave again Sharaku would nag him for trying to run away from this. As much as Ozaki was relatively okay with the general impression people likely had of him of babbling idiot, he often times was. But Sharaku was right to push like this.
Ozaki wanted time to think of this, but with as much as Nyx kept from them. As much as she hid, and with Sharaku’s theory that she likely remembered more than she let on… There likely wouldn’t be a warning until it was too late. “I can almost guarantee you wouldn’t like my answer right now.” In fact Sharaku was most likely to call it foolish some how. Because it was.
Fluffy had calmed down considerably after killing the deer…. And then darting him after he had tried to dart her. She was still definitively a killing machine. But hell. Maybe there was more to her than that? There was more to him than that after all… “But… I’d let her regain her memories. And hope that when she does, that her memories with us remain intact unlike the last time she relapsed. If they mean anything at all to her she won’t try and go on a killing spree through the school… Of which we’d need to stop her from doing of course.”
He had the darts to do so. As did her handler. This somewhat depended on taking her by surprise likely though. Which hopefully one of them would be able to. The handler had done a piss poor job the other day. Fluffy might be powerful... But she wasn't an invincible monster. They could probably handle her. A blood devil's healing powers didn't kick in until they were killed. Which meant if they did manage to incapacitate her, killing her would be the last thing they'd want to do. So just... Leave her crippled? He grimaced internally at that thought.
Any how, the Fluffy they had met the other day had not recognized any of them. And the Nyx he knew now was apparently not nearly as young as he had thought. “Talking to her would probably be a good idea though.” Maybe he could get some honest answers from her. Maybe she’d have an idea for how to handle this. It was her mind and body after all.

The Vamp Wolf | Golden eyes would blink a few times before the taller simply gave an amused snort. “To be fair, I’m not asking just to fish for an answer I like either way. Whether I do or not is not the most relevant thing.” Well, it was true that he tended to come off sort of pushy with his questions and comments, it wasn’t as if he did it solely to hear what he wanted to hear. For that, he might as well just talk to himself.
Speaking of which, this didn’t particularly bother him either. There were several ways to deal with the situation that could work out positively, just with somewhat different base chances of success. “Actually though…I’m fine with that regardless. Assuming that what happened last time wasn’t exactly normal, I don’t think that remembering would mean her current memories getting wiped out instead. That would be an odd result. I think that what matters most in the end is being able to commit and be willing to deal with the potential consequences of your choice. So if she remembers and still decides to excessively massacre people, you ought to not just turn a blind eye to it. As long as you can do that much, it’s not really a horrible decision.” Potentially more work in case it went down the drain, but sometimes experiments did yield good results. What he disliked more than silly choices were people who did that out of sentiment and then refused to deal with the result when it happened to fail. Don’t make a decision you aren’t willing to handle, unless you don’t have other options. |

He just really really didn’t want to have to cripple Nyx… But surely there were other ways. There had to be. He didn’t want to hurt her because he considered her his daughter… It wasn’t right to hurt one’s children. But Nyx was both far older and more dangerous than she looked. He loved this school and the people in it more than anything. And if he really wanted to protect it…
When the time came Ozaki would have his darts, they could incapacitate her. And decide what to do. He would have to come up with a more filled out plan before then. But assuming it literally happened an hour from now and there was no time, that was what his plan would be. Stall for more time.
Not a great one, but it was all he had right now. Ozaki could call Alise for some ideas on how to contain Nyx. If her murderous rages could be settled by so much as putting her in the path of a beast that she could kill without legal ramifications that’d be great. But if it was in her religion to murder all before her… Well there wasn’t much they could do there, was there?
“I think I can…” He hoped he could. He didn’t want to have to be the one to do it. To hurt or kill her. But he might have to. “I can at least incapacitate her. Still got a few of the blood devil darts on me, and I can always make more.”
He had half a mind to offer Sharaku one or two he currently had on hand. But he didn’t want to imply that the man couldn’t handle himself. But these were really useful… Guh.

“Yah… But its what I’ve got.” Ozaki grimaced at the reminder. Were it not for Olivia he’d likely still be out of commission from that. Nyx had apparently drained him of quite a bit of it, but there had still been enough of that to keep him out for a few days. And there was no time for that. There were too many things to plan, research, and work was always a factor of course. He hadn’t even been able to grab a moment of time with Nyx since the incident given that their schedules hadn’t lined up to give him an opportunity for that.
There had to have been something that pushed that to happening. Why had it only been temporary? Why didn’t she remember anything about her time in Eldritch Academy? “I wonder if anything caused that. I’ve been meaning to ask her but I haven’t been able to get the chance.”

A couple of days ago Ozaki would have been a bit more confident in answers regarding Nyx. However with Sharaku’s whole schpeal of all the powers he had not so much as caught a glimpse at he was well aware of just how out of the loop he was with Nyx. Then there was her tendency to ignore her pains and not bring them up to those around her. There was so much he still didn’t know about the girl he’d adopted.
… Then again. Was it really surprising that someone was capable of hiding so much? He himself had not been very forthcoming about himself. She knew little about his own life as well. He too was the type to hide his pains, but that was because he didn’t need other people’s help with them. Nyx was different in that regard, she just didn’t realize she needed help yet.
“I guess I don’t really know what she does outside of school. Doubt it was hunting or anything like that though. I’ve been trying to get her to do some of that, and hasn’t really been successful.” Sharaku’s theory that it was just a result of her past and present clashing in odd ways. That didn't feel quite right. “I feel like there had to be something else at play for it to come out like that. But maybe that’s just wishful thinking on my part.”
Hoping that when she did regain her memories, she wasn’t completely what she had shown them that day.

“No, we don’t know anything yet.” He doubted it would still be in her system at this point. Anything put into a blood devil’s system burned like newspaper drenched in kerosene. Their metabolisms were ten times that of a human’s. If there were still some of what had originally been in her system he might be able to withdraw some of her blood and allow his talent to try and root out any anomalies. Might be worthwhile to try though.
It’d definitely be novel to be taking blood from her for once. He wouldn’t take much, but it was probably a dead end anyways. Despite that though it would be better to try something to figure this out than nothing at all.
Interesting she was going on hunting jobs though. Why not just go on more scholarly ones if she really wanted to embrace the concept of pacifism? It at the very least was promising she was choosing jobs that could entail violence being required. Meaning she wasn’t entirely avoidant of it. “I’m imagining it lasted at least ten years though, so it did last quite awhile whatever it was. I’m going to guess that it more blocked her memories than properly erased them.”

So many questions. And honestly Ozaki had no answers whatsoever. He wanted to go home. No. He wanted to go to the bat cave now because goddamn if he actually wanted to be alone with all these thoughts swimming in his head. The bats couldn’t really have a full out conversation with him considering even if he could speak with them, they still only had animal levels of intelligence.
But their physical presence would be a comfort if nothing else. How to get out of this conversation though without looking like he was running away from it? He didn’t know. Maybe he could say he had a thing he had to go to? But he had kind of done that earlier. Sharaku would probably see right through it.
“I’m sure there are.” Ozaki said with a nod. “I know they’re resistant to mind control, and can break it in others. But that wouldn’t really affect any drug or potion Askel might have used.”
