welcome to Eldritch Academy
In a world of myths and mysteries, the pinnacle of the magical academies exists. Eldritch Academy offers education to all ages and species but specializes in the study and training of one's innate mystical capabilities, often called Eldritch Energies, Powers, or Unknowns, but more formally known as their Talent. However, tensions run high with the nations only holding a fragile peace as the Talents that rival the epitomes of technology change the balance of power.
With the more recent uprising of evil Shades and introduction of combat-oriented programs into Talent-focused schools, nations grow more aggressive towards one another. The demand for resources grows, and skirmishes at the border of Arka and Mistere become more frequent. Monsters run into the nations from the Wildes, terrorizing villages and cities. The need for trained or in-training Hunters and Guardians has never been more urgent.

He couldn’t fly. It was too far to walk. Breathing was painful enough that Ozaki was simply resorting to holding his breath for a few minutes at a time so as to not have his throat move while in such a state. He couldn’t believe he had forgotten what day the Summer Solstice started. Ozaki had of course prepared for it, but all his painkillers were at home. The vampire had to come to a stop, leaning heavily against the wall of a nearby building as another coughing fit seized him.
A mix of blood and Rosite Mana Crystals came out eventually, and he pocketed the crystals while flinging the blood away with a dash of blood manipulation. Where had Antonio gone? Don’t get him wrong. He was glad he wasn’t around but… Why had he disappeared? Was he okay? Ozaki head desked the wall. That was a dumb thing to wonder about his stalker… But they had been friends once upon a time.
No. As much as Ozaki hated to admit it. This wasn’t a time to be wondering about other people’s welfare. He should call Jers up… Ozaki pulled out his phone, scrolling through his contacts. A sudden coughing fit made his hand clench up, pressing call on what he thought as the right contact.
When he pulled the phone to his ear he would wait until the other person picked up. When Ozaki spoke his voice was grating, as if he had been gargling glass shards. A voice completely unrecognizable from what he normally sounded like. “Hey…” A painful sounding coughing fit rattled him for a good ten seconds before he was able to speak again, more blood and crystals produced. “I’m sorry to bother you but… I… I need to get back home. And I can’t get there like this.”

"Ryse, come on!" The older phoenix called. Ryse looked up, smiling at her mother as the fiery bird hovered above her, waiting for her. Her tail wagged happily, and spreading her wings, she took a running start before beating her wings and joining the other in the air. The two flew above the forests of Hisakawa, soaring above the treetops, racing among the clouds and the trees.
The two flew together, enjoying each other's company. It had been too long since they had just flown side by side, having fun, laughing and smiling like this. As her mother dived, Ryse tucked in her wings also, diving at nearly a ninety degree angle down towards the ground. She laughed, feeling the wind rustle her fur as the ground sped closer and closer. At the last second, the two pulled up, skimming the treetops and giving a 'Whoop' of joy. Oh, it felt so nice to have fun like this, to feel the sun on her fur, her mother beside her--
The phone rang, startling the teenager from her dream.
During her sleep, she'd transformed into her hybrid form ying on her back, her body close to the edge of her bed. At being woken, she jolted awake, pushing herself over the edge. She could feel herself slipping off the bed. Though her paws churned in the air in a futile effort to keep herself on the bed, she gave a little "Eeep!" as she tumbled to the floor in a ball of fur and feathers.
"Nnggh..."
The phone was still ringing. Blinking open her eyes, she blearily looked at the bright screen of the phone that lay open on the ground in front of her. The light was blinding to her eyes, squinting at the screen, not yet adjusted to it.
Where was she again? Oh. Right. She was at the school, not at home. Grumbling a little as she reached out a paw, she pressed the green Accept button on the screen, picking up the call. Who would call her in the middle of the night? She was already tired as it was, having stayed up late to study. She'd only gone to sleep a few hours ago.
"....hello....?"
"Hey..."
The voice, and the rough coughing that came afterwards, caused her to pause. Blinking some more and focusing her eyes on the screen, she was able to make out the name of the person who called her. 'Mr. Ozaki?'
"I’m sorry to bother you but… I… I need to get back home. And I can’t get there like this.”
This woke her up. Ozaki didn't sound so good. Was he in trouble?
"O-okay, I'll be right there. Tell me where you are." Before she registered what her body was doing, she was on her paws. Picking up the phone in her jaws, she pawed open the door and sprinted down the hallway out into the courtyard, taking flight a moment later. She couldn't move that fast on just her two legs. Flying was definitely quicker, and by the sound of his voice she needed to get there as fast as possible.

Wait. Had he just called Ryse? A high schooler on a school night? Damn it. That hadn’t been what he had meant to do. But he could hear shuffling, and could only assume she was already on her way. The phone made weird sounds while in her mouth and he could already hear the flapping of her wings. There was definitely going to be no convincing her to turn away at this point.
That would literally be a waste of breath. “Ummm…” He looked around real quick, trying to suppress another coughing fit as his voice became more grated. “At the corner of 13th and Mythriil Road. Next to the….’ He started coughing again, once more palming the shards he coughed out. He really couldn’t have these just lying about.
They’d crumple to dust after a couple of days without a host to leech off of, but if they found one that host would die a terrible death. The only reason he hadn’t died from them years ago was because of his undead status. There was a bit of pain associated from them from time to time, but usually their growth rate was rather slow. Also due to his undead state. Thusly any pains were usually rare. That, however, was not the case during the Summer Solstice.
“The Wonder Cafe. I-I'm sorry for waking you. I meant- I meant to call s-.” Each time there was a pause it was another cough. Ughgh. He couldn’t say anything right now. One of the crystals had gotten caught in his throat. Aaaand now he sounded like he was choking and coughing. He pulled the phone a bit away from his mouth, not wanting to subject Ryse to hearing all of that. Though he did try to keep it on his ear so he could hear anything she might say.

’The corner of 13th and Mythril Road…’ Ryse thought, memorizing the address as she flew. ’By the Wonder Cafe.’ She’d been in that area a few times, so she had a general idea of where he was talking about.
Since it was difficult to talk with a phone in her mouth, she simply gave a grunt meaning she understood. She envied those that could fly by just summoning wings instead of fully transforming. It was quite difficult to pick up things if you had paws instead of hands. She had her talons of course on her back feet, but they still didn’t work as well as hands did.
After several minutes of flying, she made her way into the city, her eyes scanning the streets. ’7th street…. Baker Road…. 12th street…’
Ah! There it was! The Wonder Cafe.
Ryse landed on the street, transforming into her human form. Taking the phone from her mouth, she began running to where she could see the street signs 13th Street and Mythril Road, ending the call as she saw the vampire and putting the phone in her pocket. “Mr. Ozaki!” She called, rushing up to him. She stopped beside him, concern in her eyes. He didn’t look very well. Was he sick? Could vampires even get sick?
“Should we go to the nurse? Or a doctor? There might be one nearby.” Ozaki had said he wanted to get home, but surely a doctor was better than going home.

By the time she had reached him Ozaki had resorted to simply sitting down rather than trying to stand up. A few people had tried to come up and see if he was okay, but he’d waved them away. Now Ryse was here asking about a doctor. “They… They can’t do anything.” He’d wheeze. “I have my medicines at home.” He had been to the doctor for this. And short of a complete lung transplant there wasn’t much they could do about the crystals in his lungs but medicate him when these growth spurts did happen. And he already had all the medications prepared. They were just… Not here.
They wouldn’t stop these coughing fits, indeed it was better out than in. But they would make them less terribly painful. Stopping the growth spurt was not something that could be done either, the crystals were not keen to heed anything but their own ravenous hunger this time of year.

The teenager looked around the street, then back down at the vampire. Kneeling down, she looped an arm around him and hauled him to his feet.
"Okay, well. Staying here won't do you any good." She gritted her teeth as she helped keep him upright. She wasn't that strong. In her hybrid form she could pick him up with her mouth, but she wasn't sure if that would hurt him even more. "Where do you live?"
It was the middle of the night after all. Ryse knew the vampire could take care of himself, but in this state he was a sitting duck if anyone wanted to hurt him. She also didn't know how far away his place was. A small part of her was curious to see his home, but the majority of her brain just wanted Ozaki to be okay. The vampire said he needed his medication; and his medicine was at his house. So that was where they were going to go.

Once more he cursed himself for having called the wrong person, though was somewhat grateful for once that at the very least he was no heavy weight class boxer. She was taller than him by at least six inches, and his undead frame had little need for fat stores put him in a lighter weight class even if he had tried to over time build up muscle mass so he didn’t look like a scrawny kid for the rest of eternity… However long that lasted. To be frank Ozaki had never imaged himself living past the age of a hundred, a rather young age for a vampire.
For months now Antonio and the other shadow he had been assigned had been watching over him on order of his sire. Now they were gone. Without warning or sign, he had to wonder why. Were they too going through this? And simply left to deal with it at their own residences? Had they left him behind? That was… That was fine. He wouldn’t have wanted Antonio’s help even if he had been here. But now that Ozaki found it lacking in a time he needed it most, it felt like he had lost a crutch he had been able to anticipate… One he hadn’t wanted. If Antonio had been here to help him in this moment he would have loathed him for it. But he wasn’t… But why? Likely because Ozaki had done everything in his power to push him away the moment this had started.
Ozaki shook his head, clearing himself of said thoughts. Focus. “2101 Flo-Floratz Drive… The apartments.” He went through another coughing fit, hacking up a quarter sized Roseite mana crystal coated in blood. He palmed the thing, hoping not to reveal said crystal to her. He was doubtful she would recognize it… But she was a scholar student if he remembered correctly. There was a chance.
That would lead to very many questions if she figured out what it was… Which she’d have either way. Considering she was helping him like this he probably owed her some measure of explanation. An explanation that would be easier given over text and by giving her a book with a chapter on them rather than speaking all of it himself personally. Talking obviously hurt very much right now.

Ryse frowned as she heard the address Ozaki gave her. 2101 Floratz Drive. The apartments were a good walk from where they were. 30 minutes away at least. The vampire was in bad shape, and the coughing seemed to be getting worse.
Then she saw the shard of rock that Ozaki coughed up, however, and she froze, eyes widening. The blood red color of it, and the fact that the vampire had coughed it up gave her clues that it wasn't just an ordinary rock. Not that people usually coughed up rocks anyways... "I-is that... a Rosite Mana Crystal?" She'd read about them in her studies for her exploration class. Rosite mana crystals were extremely dangerous. Regular mana crystals that were corrupted. They grew inside of hosts, and could be used as a deadly poison.
Her brain scrambled to think of whatever else she'd read about them. There was something about the Summer Solstice that she couldn't quite remember. She knew it wasn't good, however. And Ozaki was coughing these up.... Could vampires die from the crystals? She didn't think so; he was already dead. However, it was clear he was in a lot of pain. How did he even get the crystals in the first place?
Thinking about it for a moment, she let go of the vampire. Taking a step backward, she transformed once again into her hybrid form. She shook out her fur, fluttering her wings a little. Then grabbing the back of Ozaki's shirt, she gently lifted him up and placed him on her back. He could barely stand; she didn't trust him to be able to get on her back himself. "Hold on tight, okay?"
Spreading her wings, she prepared to take flight. Flying was faster than walking. The quicker they got to the apartments, they quicker Ozaki could get his medication.

He nodded rather than speaking. It seemed she knew something about them after all.. The vampire pocketed the coughed up. No doubt something she would find odd. But you really did not simply leave parasitic crystals lying around after all. He was a little surprised when she lifted him up in her hybrid form, but did not resist the movement as he was placed on her back. Instead tried using his blood manipulation to try and clear away the blood on his hands. When the power shorted out, he simply resorted to wiping his hand on his coat and only then gripping her ruff as tightly as he dared. “Sorry.” He muttered. But he had to hold on some how after all.
Ow. Ow.
Ozaki stopped breathing again in an attempt to stall more of his coughing for the trip over, keeping a hand close to his mouth in the event of such. Internally he tried to go to a corner of his mind, reminding himself though it might hurt, this was only a temporary pain. It might hurt. But he would not die. This was okay. He was okay. He would be okay. He had felt worse than the sensation of a lacerated windpipe… But hell if it wasn’t up there.
Usually he had pain killers that made the very sensation of pain impossible in his system at this point but… He didn’t have those on him now. And with the crystals in their growth spurt stage, they were sapping his mana. Making the usage of his talent impossible, making some for now would be impossible.

“No need to apologize. I did tell you to have a tight hold after all, haha!” She felt his hands grab ahold of her scruff, but it didn’t hurt. Her mother used to grab and carry her by the scruff all the time when she was a fledgling. The thick fur and loose skin was meant as protection for her neck if she were ever attacked by anyone. She’d also read that the act of grabbing the scruff was a form of showing dominance. Dominant dogs would grab the scruffs of submissive ones to show them their place. But this was harmless.
When she was sure Ozaki wouldn’t fall off, she started accelerating until she was sprinting - the gait being uneven as it always was due to her different feet - then spread her wings and took to the air. Being unused to carrying someone on her back, and thus being heavier than she normally was, she had to flap harder in order to stay aloft. Once she got used to it, however, the rest of the trip was smooth. The two flew above the city, passing shops and streets that Ryse recognized and heading into ones that she didn’t. After 10 minutes or so she spotted the apartments to the left.
“Ladies and gentlemen, if you look to your left you will see that we have arrived at our destination. Please don’t forget your luggage as you step off the carrier! Thank you for flying Air Phoenix!” She said jokingly as she glided down, the descent being much smoother than the initial takeoff. She came to a stop in front of the apartment, then she set Ozaki down before turning back into a human.

He had to lean into Ryse a bit as they took off initially in order not to produce too much drag and not be swept off, but once they were in the air he was able to straighten up at least a little bit. This he mostly did to avoid coughing on her if he couldn't stop it. Ozaki let out a painful sounding laugh as Ryse made the joke, the rapid outtake of air setting off another wave of coughing that had him hunched over until about half a dozen smaller shards of crystals had been coughed out.
When they landed he rubbed at his mouth with the back of his hand, wiping away the blood that had seeped out. If his neighbors saw him with blood all over his face they’d assume he was a messy, brutal eater. While that was true if he actually bit down… He preferred blood packets to avoid such a mess. Ozaki pulled out his phone and sent a text message to Ryse, showing her the screen of his own phone so she wouldn’t have to pull hers out.
I forgot my luggage back at the other airport. Can we go back?
His own attempt to use humor given the grim scenario he was facing himself in. Well. Grim might be an overstatement. He’d be fine once he got his medicines. Still coughing up Rosite Mana Crystals for no apparent reason was no good. Maybe it was an inherited trait… But so far as he had found vampires typically only acquired one trait from their sire. His own sire’s line inherited this dumb ahoge. But maybe there was an exception.
The only other explanation strained credulity.

She winced at the sound of Ozaki's laughing. She was trying to lighten the mood, but perhaps she hadn't made that joke if it was going to cause him more pain. "Sorry." She murmured.
When she read the text on his phone, she gave a small smile. At least he was trying to keep a positive outlook on this. Looping an arm around him again, she would help him to the front door. "You have a key, right?" Busting down the door wasn't on her bucket list.
"When we get inside, can you tell me where your medication is? I can grab it for you." She knew he wouldn't be able to get them on his own. She could sit him down on a couch or a chair or something while she ran to get them. Ryse was still confused as to how he'd gotten the crystals in the first place. She knew they were used in poisons and rituals... and she knew that his father had tried to kill him. Had his father tried to poison him?

He waved away her apologies before reaching into his pocket and bring out his apartment keycard to get into the complex, sliding it quickly and pushing the handicap button to open the door for them. He used his curved wrist rather than hiis hand to avoid getting blood on the button. Now that would certainly be a fright for anyone walking in.
Once he put his card away he’d start typing one handedly on his phone.
You don’t have to go that far. Just taking me to the door is more than enough.
She’d already gone this out of her way. Plus. The medication was in his room and it was a mess in there. He didn’t think his roommate was the type to take random drugs for the hell of it. But the painkillers he had prepared ahead of time, knowing his ability to use his talent would be shot this week, were some pretty heavy duty stuff. If someone had drug abusing tendencies they wouldn’t be able to help themselves.

Ryse rolled her eyes as she read the text message. “Nice try, but I’m coming in with you. You can barely stand. How are you going to get your medicine without falling over?”
She walked with the vampire, stepping inside the apartment complex, looking around. The interior looked nice enough; white tile floor, green walls, a few pictures on the walls. There was a brown oak door leading to a room in front of them with a silver number 101 at the top, and a hallway branching off to the right where she could see an elevator. “Besides,” her voice lowered to a whisper, “I’ve already done this much; it wouldn’t be right to just leave you like this.” She was still concerned for him. While she guessed it probably couldn’t kill him, since he was already dead, his coughing seemed to be pretty painful.
The teenager looked to the door in front of them, then towards the elevator. “........I’m guessing your room isn’t on the first floor?” She kept her voice low, as she knew other people were sleeping. Waking them up wouldn’t be a very good thing in her book.

Hey he could stand if he really had to! But Ozaki wouldn’t argue the point. Given it would take too long to text an she wasn’t entirely wrong to be concerned. He didn’t need air as next as the next person but…. Being in this much pain was never pleasant.
Okay.
He certainly wouldn’t leave any one in this state even if they insisted on it. He supposed he really was going to have to get over himself in that respect right now. Usually Ozaki tried his best to not tangle people up in his problems or to have them help him. Too many people had gotten hurt or killed over the years trying to help him… He’d hate to see Ryse join that toll. But then again. She did have lives to spare… Not that Ozaki would want her to spend them on him.
No. Its room 325, on the third floor.
Ozaki was meanwhile working on what to answer for the questions she would undoubtedly have. He had a book with a chapter on Rosite mana crystals he could give her. As for the rest… He might be frank with her. As much as she had told him about herself during the phoenix trials, letting her know a bit about this wouldn’t be so bad. Plus, she already knew one of the more incendiary facts about him. The fact that his father had been out to kill him since the day of his turning. That up until recently he had been premeditating straight up murder.
The fact he coughed up Rosite Mana crystals, things heavily associated with dark magic rituals. Their very existence usually meant someone or something had to die for their creation. And he was just spewing them up like a kid who ate too much candy after Halloween. Except from his lungs, not his stomach. Which was so much worse.
He started hacking again, one of the crystals lodging in his throat painfully. He’d… Just leave it there for now. There were a few ways he could get it out but subjecting Ryse to seeing any of those didn’t seem very fair to her.
