welcome to Eldritch Academy
In a world of myths and mysteries, the pinnacle of the magical academies exists. Eldritch Academy offers education to all ages and species but specializes in the study and training of one's innate mystical capabilities, often called Eldritch Energies, Powers, or Unknowns, but more formally known as their Talent. However, tensions run high with the nations only holding a fragile peace as the Talents that rival the epitomes of technology change the balance of power.
With the more recent uprising of evil Shades and introduction of combat-oriented programs into Talent-focused schools, nations grow more aggressive towards one another. The demand for resources grows, and skirmishes at the border of Arka and Mistere become more frequent. Monsters run into the nations from the Wildes, terrorizing villages and cities. The need for trained or in-training Hunters and Guardians has never been more urgent.

Rhythm moved with purpose, slipping through the shadows under neon lights. It was another rainy night in the big city, and he intended to head to his usual place. He couldn't wait to hear who was playing at the club tonight.
The shadow carried a rusty pipe with him, dragging it across the sidewalk and through the puddles. The noise clashed off brick and concrete, and he would lift the pipe now and again to pound it idly into the ground.
The plaza was busy as usual, and, per the usual, most people were giving him a wide berth without even realizing it. The few that didn't looked curiously or with a start at the pipe, and he'd tap them a silly beat, and then they would turn and hurry away.
Rhythm dropped the pipe as he neared his destination, storing it somewhere safe so that he could retrieve it later, should he want to. Then he meandered silently, unnoticed towards the front door, striding past the bouncer.
Or so he thought.
A shock sent him flying backwards, splashing in the shadow cast by an iron bench. Gathering his wits, Rhythm got up and approached the door more cautiously this time. Although he was gentle about it, he was still launched violently into the air, where he hovered in shock as it dawned on him what must be going on.
A barrier---I'm locked out! he screamed silently. Rhythm rushed to one of the windows, but it was no use. He pressed himself as close to the building as possible, listening to the muffled music as it pulsed through the thick walls.
It wasn't good enough---he could hardly hear at all what was going on!
Rhythm disappeared at once, but wasn't long gone. When he returned it was with pipe in hand, and with it he began striking out at the barrier, hoping to break through.

The Vamp Wolf | Ah hell..maybe he really should have taken a different route. The half-vampire had been slightly hopeful that night time would mean less people hanging around, but was clearly not being lucky this time. Through the city was the shortest route still though, and he really did not feel like taking many roundabouts tonight.
The hunting job he had been dealing with had already given him enough of somewhat pointless exercise after all. Nothing's worse than having a target that tries to skeddadle on you, forcing you to play a game of cat and mouse. Regardless of his previous difficulties however, the main issue of the moment was that he was attracting slightly worried looks, his appearance kind of roughed up a bit, with a bunch of bloodstains on his shirt. It was great. He probably looked just like some serial killer stalking around at night. This was why he had hoped to not pass too many people on his way back...
Of course, he had no such luck, resigning himself to his fate with a grumble as he trudged his way through the streets, until a rather strange scenery entered his field of vision. You don't see weird people swinging pipes at seemingly nothing...well nothing visible at least, every day. Ha, he was sure the one to talk about weirdness, but still.
Whoever this was, they had a rather weird vibe too, which naturally made him curious enough to pause his walk for now, in order to take a closer look. Striding closer in the direction of the strange being, he'd try to raise a question to see if that'd have any effect. "Is...something going on here?" |

A quarter of a minute passed before Rhythm realized the voice was directed at him. He looked around, staring in about as dumbfounded a way as a shadow person could muster with their minimal expressions.
Hm...would this guy be affected by the barrier? Suddenly Rhythm had the bright idea to see if he could slip in through another's shadow. It wasn't as though he could explain the situation, either, so it was also the best he could do to tell the stranger what was going on. Two birds with one stone, as they say.
Rhythm vanished at once, teleporting into the other's shadow. Rising up behind him, Rhythm would try to grab the stranger---and then chuck him at the barrier. Or push him into it, if he weighed just a little too much.

Bat---what---bat---WHAT?
Rhythm blinked in utter bewilderment as the human in his hands became a bat. He stared up at the bat, then down at his hands, then back at the bat, then again at his hands. For a shadow that could himself shapeshift, he was definitely a little too confused. He'd never seen a human (if the stranger even was human) change shape before.
Well, there wasn't anything he could do about it.
Rhythm turned into a perfect shadow replicate of the bat, fluttered around him in frustration, and then returned to his pipe as a vaguely humanoid shadow. He picked it up and started pacing along the building, rattling the pipe along it in search of any weak points. He moved up and down as well as side-to-side, wholly weightless, and was careful to stay away from the entrance side (he didn't want to attract any attention from the bouncer).

The Vamp Wolf | Frankly, Sharaku was all kinds of confused too. The shapeshifting in itself didn't faze him, as he was well aware there were a lot of species with varying abilities, and that wasn't even counting individual powers. Still, he could not quite figure out what was this one's deal. Staying in his bat form for a short while, he'd hover about, watching as he considered his options.
The easiest one would be to simply leave and get back to what he was doing before, which was dragging his ass back to the dorms. On the other hand, with how strange this was, he would probably end up wondering about it for a good while if he just left without getting any questions answered. Questions...right. He hadn't gotten any answers the first time. It didn't look like the being cared about truly attacking him either though, so what the hell had that been about?
Turning back into his human form, he'd watch the odd behavior with a mild frown on his face. "Am I correct to assume I won't be getting a normal answer from you....?" It would help if it was something he could actually understand and did not seem like a threat, to be honest... |

Rhythm paused as the bat approached, returned to a human form. He glanced over the stranger as a question was asked and, almost imperceptibly, Rhythm nodded in reply. In an attempt to show why there would be no "normal answer," the shadow formed two hands and slammed them together in a clap with no actual sound to it. He hoped that would be sufficient enough for the stranger to understand that he couldn't make noise.
Well, except with this pipe, of course. (And the human, if he had only let Rhythm throw him. And also lost a few pounds.)
Rhythm started tapping the magical barrier again. He wasn't sure how else to further communicate what was going on. He didn't think walking into the barrier and being thrown backwards would be too evident---it'd probably just look like he'd leapt that way on his own will. How much simpler things would be if he could only talk! It wasn't fair!
As Rhythm passed by another window, he started gesturing to the stranger, trying to motion for him to go inside the building. If the stranger could get through, he still wanted to try hitching a ride on his shadow. Problem was, the window was closed, but surely the human could break through it? He could even have his pipe! Rhythm held it out for him to take, to use as a weapon to break the glass. Or could he also turn into a fog, not just a bat?

The Vamp Wolf | Okay so...no sound then? Hm. He'd have to look into shadow-like species later to see what he had been dealing with exactly. While he was familiar with a good amount of races at least in terms of basics, knowing literally every type of being and their characteristics was not a focal point any of his courses, nor something he had been focusing on learning. Though, it could certainly be useful...as much as it was also impossible to know all of them, given how many there were and could even be hiding and not discovered yet.
It appeared the being at the very least understood him though, so some form of communication was possible. Better than nothing, certainly. Plus, now he thought he kind of understood...to an extent. He was still confused about the reasoning behind it however.
If he was guessing correctly, this person wanted in, but something wasn't letting them, right? Well....this appeared to be a club, which wouldn't just bar people...unless...hm. The tall young man would scratch his cheek in thought as he considered how to approach this. "I guess...you want to go in? I don't think breaking in is a good idea though. I can't do that. It'd attract attention, and they'd probably just call the cops on our asses for property damage." If they were taking measures to keep people from sneaking inside, they would definitely care about someone smashing their windows.
"Maybe your problem is that you're trying to sneak in unnoticed? This is a club, yes? I'd bet they don't want unchecked people in who could be up to no good. Could be that you need approval from the bouncer to pass." Weird security measures? He could see that happening if some incidents did hurt the club in the past. Not that he ever visited such places or knew a lot on how they were run, but it made some sense in his mind. Making sure no one got in past the initial security that easily, so they could keep their regular customers more safe from thugs and the like. |

Rhythm gave a thumbs-up as the stranger guessed that he wanted in. Yayy, communication! His shoulders sagged, however, when he suggested going in through the front door.
Past the bouncer.
That guy? The huge, huge guy with the strong arms and the mean face and the evil eye? Uh-uh, no way! Rhythm wasn't scared or nothing, it just...wasn't going to work. He knew it wouldn't, never in a million years. Not only that, then they'd see him and they'd know he was there and kick him out for scaring everyone and never let him in again---
Suddenly it dawned on him. The barrier...it had never been there before. Was it there now...because of him? Was it for him? Little ole him? It couldn't be! How did they find out? He was so careful!
Rhythm could cry, but he held himself steady. This could still work. It could be for something else entirely, and he just happened to be affected by it.
Dropping the pipe, Rhythm began pointing at the stranger and motioning towards the front. He crossed a line over his own throat and then dove into the other's shadow with another thumbs-up, once more gesturing at the front.

The Vamp Wolf | Wh- Now wait a second. He hadn't even agreed to anything. Hell, he had not expressed any kind of agreement from the beginning outside of offering a potential hypothetical, but this shadow guy was acting like him helping out was a guaranteed thing. Even moments ago with that window smashing suggestion. It was as if it was supposedly a no brainer that he ought to do what this being wanted of him.
...he was not liking that. People casually telling him what to do was very low on his list of things he tolerated. Plus, that didn't even address how many problems there were with this. For one, he did not want to go inside at all. He was not a party person, and his hightened canine senses tended to make him despise loud places like that by default. Two, he looked like he just came from a murder trip, so to even safely get past the bouncer, he'd have to waste energy on tricking them with his powers.
Three? What reason did he have to trust this stranger? There was absolutely no proof the shadowy being was actually not up to no good. A normal person would not need to sneak in or use someone to get them past the door. Something was just off about this, and figuring it out would be such a pain without being able to have a conversation.
Sighing, he'd cross his arms over his chest, a somewhat bothered expression settling on his face. He didn't know what exactly his odd company was doing to disappear but he figured he would still be heard if he spoke anyhow. "Now listen here....I don't even know you. I can't just do this and risk getting myself into trouble if you are going to do something troublesome in there. You're not giving a very trustworthy impression so far." Far from it, honestly. "There's no way you would feel the need to try breaking in, or sneaking in hidden by someone else if you didn't believe they won't let you in were you to attempt entering normally by yourself. That's rather suspicious. If you've got no bad intentions, and aren't banned from this place, why all this?" Whatever it was...
"If you really just want to go to a club though...why not try a different one? In case it is just a matter of this one not liking your species or such, you could attempt elsewhere. I'm sure this city has a bunch of clubs, unless you've been doing this at all of them already." Well, he couldn't just assume the worst only, and in case it was more of a misunderstanding, would it not be better to try a new place that didn't seem to be so wary they'd put up some extra people repellents? "There has to be a better way than going in illegally. Doing that only spells trouble sooner or later, both for you and whoever happens to be carefree enough to smuggle you in." |

Rhythm leaked out of the stranger's shadow as he began to admonish him, looking like roadkill human straight out of a cartoon, flat as a pancake. Only he was still featureless save those creepy, piercing eyes. A puddle of shadow began to spread around him---his well of tears.
What he was doing was trying to look all sad and guilt-trip the guy. Could a shadow person even manage such a feat? Well, he sure was trying.
Rhythm's mood only soured as the stranger continued, and he started to entertain the idea of scaring him.
But...no...that wouldn't be very nice. Besides, wasn't that what had got him into this whole mess to begin with? He'd just end up making it worse!
Rhythm began to crawl away, utterly defeated, but stopped when the stranger said something.
Other...clubs? There were other clubs? That meant there were other bands, too!
Rhythm shot back near the stranger, instantly appearing in front of the man's face. Like. An inch from his face. He stared pointedly at the man, deeply into his eyes, and then he turned into a puppy and started bouncing around him, trying to make it clear that he wanted to be shown the way to another club.
Puppies were trustworthy, right? And friendly? And not scary?
He hoped he wasn't making himself look like a madman. Oh, man...he was, wasn't he? OHGODHEWASSCREWINGUPSOBADLYWHATWASWRONGWITHHIM
The puppy sat down and panted cutely, as cutely as he could with that fear-inducing aura wafting off him like the stench of rotten eggs. He even tried to wipe away some of the shadow, put some color into his body!
Red lines dripped out of the puppy's pinprick eyes.

The Vamp Wolf | Both luckily and unluckily for his strange companion, the tall hybrid was not one to be affected by projected emotions easily. While he found the vibe kind of creepy, as long as he couldn't see or clearly perceive anything he'd find truly scary, he was perfectly content rationalizing the silly idea of fear away, and willfully ignoring its existence. At the same time however, puppy eyes and overexaggerated displays of sadness had about as much desired effect as the fear aura. Aka, he found himself giving the shadow a blank expression as he internally considered his levels of patience and whether they were sufficient for this mess.
Staying around this being just felt like asking for trouble sooner or later, whether it was because of the creepiness, or the over the top, apparently rather uninhibited behavior. Someone who doesn't take time to think about consequences until they're pointed out has a lot of potential to be disruptive after all.
Though maybe....if he just took this one to a less security minded club, he could be free without risking acquiring a stalker. Running a hand through his currently messy hair, Sharaku would grumble to himself underneath his breath as he eyed the now...unsettling dog figure. "Well...I can take you to one's location, but can't guarantee anything else. God knows I'm not a club person." He only owed it to his eidetic memory that he even knew where the nearest one was, all thanks to having passed by it when headed to a different place in the past.
"Maybe you should bring tools that could help you talk it out with people when you do things like this. You do seem to be able to touch things..." He'd comment casually as he turned to walk towards a different alley. Could carry some paper and pen to do writing or whatever....it would really help to know what this one was actually thinking... |

Yes---success!
Rhythm wagged his tail and bounced happily after him, seeping into the stranger's shadow for an easy ride.
Tools? Rhythm wondered what he could possibly mean by that. As useful as it might have been, Rhythm hadn't the faintest about reading and writing, so he couldn't imagine what might help him communicate other than flailing his arms around and dragging people places. It wasn't as though he had parents or anything that could teach him this stuff.
Speaking of dragging people places...Rhythm was flabbergasted how someone could not be a "club person." Clearly this stranger didn't know what he was missing.

Bite his ass? Rhythm would never! But he was thinking of grabbing it so he could shove him into the club to have some fun, whether he wanted to or not.
Rhythm was, however, distracted when he began to hear---what else but music? He thought at first it was because they were nearing the club, but then he realized that the stranger was heading in the wrong direction, away from the music!
Rhythm might have screamed if he could, but he had a better idea, and that was to, of course, head towards the music.
...with the stranger.
With his back turned to Rhythm, it was the perfect time to make him face the music, and that was exactly what Rhythm intended to do. Sneakily, he tried to grab the man's hand and then yank him off the sidewalk, darting across the busy street in a bid to find where the music was coming from.
