welcome to Eldritch Academy
In a world of myths and mysteries, the pinnacle of the magical academies exists. Eldritch Academy offers education to all ages and species but specializes in the study and training of one's innate mystical capabilities, often called Eldritch Energies, Powers, or Unknowns, but more formally known as their Talent. However, tensions run high with the nations only holding a fragile peace as the Talents that rival the epitomes of technology change the balance of power.
With the more recent uprising of evil Shades and introduction of combat-oriented programs into Talent-focused schools, nations grow more aggressive towards one another. The demand for resources grows, and skirmishes at the border of Arka and Mistere become more frequent. Monsters run into the nations from the Wildes, terrorizing villages and cities. The need for trained or in-training Hunters and Guardians has never been more urgent.

The sky was blue, and there wasn't a cloud in sight. The sun shone brightly overhead, and the air was cold as winter was here, but it was refreshing after being stuck in classrooms all day. Ryse Azar sat down on one of the many benches around the courtyard, one that was a little ways away from everyone else in the vicinity, grasping a book in her hands. The halfbreed had come here to relax, and reading was one of the best ways for her to do so. Besides, the weather was nice; why would she be inside when she could spend her time outdoors?
The seventeen-year-old cast a quick glance around to make sure she was truly alone, before opening her book and beginning to read. It was about far away lands she'd never been to, and the strange creatures that lived there. Having grown up in the middle of a forest, there were a lot of things she didn't know and was still trying to figure out. Such as the fact that there was something called ice cream, which she'd tried yesterday. She had fallen in love with it immediately; normally she didn't like frozen food, but this was an exception. It was sweet and cold, and was nice to have on top of apple pie, which was another food she'd tried recently. Who knew such two different things could work so well together?
Ryse was soon immersed in her book, her focus solely on the words on the pages she was reading, a smile on her face.

The Atranoch marched his way through the halls of the school, heading for the courtyard. His sword hanging from his left hip, he ignored every student he passed. He ignored the waving, the smiling, the greeting. He didn't want to greet them in that manner. To say "Hi" and wave as you passed was so fleeting, you learned nothing about them as an individual. Instead, Oras learned through actions. He had not been in this world for too long, at least on this trip, and he had already been labeled by his own summoner as picky. While she was right, he had a reason for it: He didn't want to work with anyone who was weak or was in fact a moron. And from his experience on his last trip, the world was in fact, filled with morons. People who were intelligent, but couldn't lift a table for the life of them. People who were strong but were too stupid to figure out a simple puzzle. And then there were the people who were both pathetically weak and just stupid. It was rare for there to be someone who was a nice balance between the two.
When he met his summoner he had come to the conclusion that she was in fact intelligent. He believed her to be the more devious sort of intelligent, but that was good enough for him. However he had yet to see her power and strength, and thus he was not yet satisfied. While he was uncomfortable with her as his summoner and partner, she had managed to find and exploit his weak point: He needed her. There was something he had to do on this world, and it could not be accomplished if he was not here to do it. Therefore he needed his summoner. He hated her for exploiting that weakness, but he'd have to remain as calm and patient as he could until he could understand why she did it... Of course he couldn't understand women period but the point remained. Today, despite his efforts to push her into having a spar with him, she insisted that he give her some time alone. At the very least an hour. So he decided to do the next best thing:
Oras walked into the courtyard and saw a handful of students around. He grinned as he drew his blade and let out a blast of frost. It didn't hit anyone, but it did make a small noise and cast frost all over the ground and walls, getting everyone's attention. "Alright then! My name's Oras! I've got some spare time so I may as well use it!" He held his blade out and slowly rotated it, pointing at each individual in the courtyard. "I don't have a sparring partner yet, so I'm issuing a challenge to everyone here! I wanna see which one of you is actually worth my time. I've never heard of this school until I came here so come show me how powerful you all truly are." His grin became a smirk. "Visitor, student, teacher I don't care who you are or what you call yourself. I just want a good fight." However, he didn't get nearly the reaction he intended. Everyone just left. Some looked at him as if he were crazy, and some just walked away muttering something about peace and quiet.
"Pfft. Bunch of pansy's. You're all the most boring generation of your kind." With that Oras sheathed his blade.

Ryse was startled by the sudden exclamation ringing out into the courtyard. Jerking her head up from the book she'd been reading, she looked around to see who had made the noise. The culprit seemed to be a snowy haired boy, whose name was apparently Oras, or so he said. She listened to his challenge for a worthy sparring partner, and witnessed the other people walking away, leaving him alone. She herself wasn't in the mood for a fight. But she couldn't help but feel interested in the person. It wasn't every day that someone was challenging people to a duel, holding a sword after all.
Was he new? He did say that he'd never heard of this school until he arrived here, and it didn't look like he'd been here long. Maybe she should introduce herself. It would be rude not to. Seeing as he had sheathed his sword, it told her that he'd given up on finding a sparring partner. Perhaps now it was safe for her to approach.
Closing the book and standing up from the bench, she hesitantly made her way over to Oras. "Hi Oras." She said, smiling at him. "I'm Ryse. Are you new here? How are you liking the school so far?"

He heard a voice speak up to him from the side and he turned his head to see a brown haired girl walk up to him with a book in hand. Clearly she was a student, and she didn't seem too fazed from his little 'show'. She had just walked right up to him. At first he was hoping she was an actual challenger but it turns out she just wanted to chit chat. Great. Another one. Someone who didn't enjoy the thrill and adrenaline of combat. He turned to her, focusing on her eyes alone in the attempt of not seeing her in general.. On the chance that she might be pretty. "Nice to meet you reeses cup." He said in response to hearing her name. When she asked him if he was new here and he almost rolled his eyes. "Oh no, I've been here ages. I just never heard the name of this place or payed any sort of attention that would tell me what this place was and who the people in it were. I just decided now of all times to ask everyone for some answers!" She continued, wanting to know how he was liking it so far. He placed a hand on his hip and gave a very bored look.
"Well what do you think? I come here on my free time seeking a little entertainment and, lo and behold, everyone here is just a collection of boring dull retards, who probably couldn't even survive a skeleton."

Ryse frowned, brows furrowing at Oras’s remark. “Actually my name is pronounced Reese.” She said. She didn’t really like his sarcastic tone. She hadn’t done anything to warrant such rudeness from him. Was he always this way with people he just met?
Her mind wandered as she looked at him. She wondered if he was human, or some other species. If he wasn’t human.... what was he? He certainly didn’t smell like a human.....there was a strong scent she hadn’t smelled before. He smelled like ice, if ice could have a smell. She’d always had a strong sense of curiosity, one that had gotten her in trouble a time or two. “What are you? You don’t smell like a human.” The words were out before she could stop them, and she looked away in embarrassment at having revealed this fact about herself to a total stranger.

She corrected him stating that her name was pronounced Reese. He nodded. "Yeah I know that. Don't need to tell me twice, I can hear just fine Reeses pieces." He walked past her, patting her head. "Now go along. I'm sure you have classes and such. Something boring and all." This was such a drag. He had tried to avoid petty chit chat, which was not how he learned about people in any way. He had tried to have some fun and enjoy himself while his summoner wanted some 'alone time'. Of course nothing went as planned so he was going to have to find some other way to entertain himself. That's when he heard her speak up again.
Oras turned around, very confused at what she had said. "Smell? What the hell does that mean? You humans can hardly tell the difference between- Oooh, my, lord." he said, his eyes widening. Suddenly a wide snarky smile appeared on his face. "You're not a human, you're a Dog! Ha ha ha! That's amazing!" He took a moment to laugh for a bit. Ryse was lucky everyone had walked out, or else he'd be drawing everyone's attention to her. "Ah, oh boy. I needed that laugh. No I'm not human. I'm an Atranoch, thank you very much."

Ryse fought the urge to smack the Atronach upside the head. "I'm not. A dog." She said between clenched teeth, struggling to keep the anger out of her voice. She hated being called a dog. It was one of the things that she despised wholeheartedly. It only served to remind her how much of an oddity she really was.
"An Atronach?" She'd never heard of such a being before. But then again.... there was a lot of things she hadn't heard of before. "Did you come from a snowy place? Or do all of your kind smell like ice?" Despite Oras's snarky behavior, perhaps she could learn something about his race. For example, did all Atronachs want to show off as much as Oras did? Or was he the only one that was so outgoing? There was so much she didn't know.

Seeing her get angry made this even better for him. The more angry she looked, the less pretty she looked. The less pretty she looked, the less uncomfortable he was going to be. So he decided to push her into anger. Maybe he'd get a nice spar after all. He smirked harder. "Awww, what's the matter puppy? Why are you hiding in plain sight eh? Why not show what you really look like. Are you really that ugly?" He chuckled as he finished, hoping to get a reaction from her. She seemed to hate that she was a dog, and now he was curious as to why? Why did she hate being a dog? "And if you aren't a little lost doggy, then what would you be huh? What else are you that you'd have such powerful scent to smell ice. Even I didn't know ice had a smell."
When she spoke again she asked where he came from, and if all his kind smelled like this. He scoffed. "Do your homework puppy girl. An Atranoch is an elemental being that lives in a realm between the material realm, and the realm of fantasy. Of dreams. That allows us to comprehend and understand things you'd die trying to picture. Try getting that into your little brain."

Ryse narrowed her eyes at Oras. "Shut up." She all but growled. "Why do you care what I am? Also, you're hiding in plain sight as well! You just said that you're an elemental being! So don't make fun of me for wanting to fit in!" The air around her began to rise in temperature, spurred by her anger.
She was very grateful that nobody else except Oras was around to hear their conversation. She would die of embarrassment if anyone else found out what she was. She had come to this school to learn about the world, and to decide on a career for herself. She wanted to be successful, and she couldn't do that with everyone mocking her. Most of all, she wanted to make her mother proud. The Phoenix had faith that she could do whatever she put her mind to, and Ryse was going to prove her mother right by graduating from the academy.

Whether she realized it or not, she issued him a challenge. Oras transformed on the spot, turning into a seven foot eleven being looming over her. Tall and thin, but not frail. Talons for hands and feet. Rib like exoskeleton over his body. His lower face covered in ice, his mouth hidden. His eyes like the soul of winter, glowing a pale white light. Two long horns on his head with smaller ones on the side of his head and under his chin. A long tail winding out and two massive dragon shaped wings. His entire body made of solid ice. As his wings stretched out, the entire area became chilled down to the twenties. "Then I suppose you would prefer this form?" he said, his voice becoming more ethereal, otherworldly and mystical than in his human form. And just like that, he would return to normal, laughing his head off.
"Please. As if I'd be afraid to show off what I am. I'm freaking awesome. The question is, why do you want to avoid being seen in your true form? Are you not proud of who you are? Do you crave to be human that much? Or is it something else entirely?" He chuckled with a snark look on his face. "Here's a tip dollface~ Don't dare someone to do something you aren't willing to do yourself. Makes you look even more like an idiot ha ha ha!"

"It wasn't a dare! And I don't have to tell you anything!" Ryse snapped. She shivered from the moment of extreme cold that had covered her head to toe, trying to warm herself back up again.
While she hadn't expected to see Oras's true form, what she'd thought he would look like was somewhat different. She'd expected a being made of ice shards, which all moved in unison with each other and could solidify or split apart at will. Actually seeing his form had been interesting, and - admittedly - a little scary. She was glad he was back in his human form. It made it easier to talk to him; even though he was being a total jerk.
"Maybe I like fitting in! At least in this form I'm not the oddball for once!" People barely glanced at her when she was human. They treated her like everyone else, like she was normal. If she was walking around in her true form, people would no doubt stare at her. Or maybe run away from her. Being a seven foot five creature that mostly looked like a Church Grim tended to do that to people...

"Pfft, you're more pathetic than I thought," he told her with a scoff. "Really? That's you're excuse? Ok then, let's assume that's really the case then shall we? let's say you want to be seen as human. To be seen as normal. Does that mean you'll go around acting like humans do your whole life then? Ignore and run from what you really are? And what abouha. Aha, oh I can't keep talking about this without laughing! It's just that stupid!" He shook his head before drawing his blade and placing it by her neck. The blade would be ice cold and he'd make sure she felt it. However it wouldn't cut her. "You wanna blend in huh? Then I'd take a good look at humanity and just how wretched their kind are. Then ask yourself: Do I really wanna be like those assholes? Do I really want to be like those treacherous, backstabbing, devious, cruel, heartless, selfish beings?" He pulled the blade away with a smirk on his face.
"I take human form because it gives me many ways to show them how stupid they are. You? You're just a lost puppy, cowering at the world. Wearing a mask and pretending to be something you're not in the hopes that they'll leave you alone. No one cares about the poor puppy dog do they? Welcome to the damn world princess! I hope you enjoy your stay!"

Ryse glared venomously up at Oras. "Shut. Up." She replied coldly, the air shimmering from the heat around her now. How dare he mock her! He didn't know what it was like to be a freak! Many creatures had human forms, and they all coexisted with humans peacefully. Why should her decision to do the same be viewed as less than any other creature?!
And damn it, she was not going to cry! She blinked back the tears that had been forming at the edges of her eyes. She was stronger than this; she wasn't going to break down just because a jerk was making fun of her. She was used to such comments by now.
"Shut the Hell Up!" At Oras's last few statements, her anger blazed, and before she knew it she had flung herself at the Atronach in a blur of fur, fury, and embers. She hadn't realized that she'd transformed into her true form; a seven foot five tall Church Grim with feathery wings, hawk feet for her back paws, and a beak showing at the end of her muzzle. Her golden eyes bore into Oras's form, the only thought going through her mind was making him quiet. For him to stop the constant mockery. Nothing else mattered at that point.

He saw the venom in her eyes and heard her words, but that only made his smirk wider. "Oooh~ Impressive. You could scare people who think wolves are terrifying." He had lead her into a trap. She was trying not to cry, that much was obvious. Ryse was doing her best not to let things get to her, but the fact that she was so angered was screaming how much it got to her. When she roared and rushed at him, his eyes widened as he hadn't expected fire. His body shattered into ice fragments which flew to the sides, separated. He narrowly dodged her attack and reformed a ways back in his humanoid form again. This time holding his sword out with a grin. "Woah woah, now what was that? You're a flaming dog? Are you a hellhound or-" He stopped when he saw the wings.
A half dog, half bird hybrid? He didn't know the dog half, though it had a shadowy appearance. The wings and fire however reminded him of a phoenix. So that's it? "....Pff..Ppffftttt HA HA HA HA! OH MY GOSH!!!" He refocused, ready for combat. Excitement for an actual fight showed in his eyes. He wasn't afraid, he was ready. Ready for a duel. "Well what do you know. I'm wrong for a change. You aren't a dog, you're a Puppird! What's wrong little girl? Can't hit me for shit?" He had to be careful. If she attacked him he would try using his speed advantage to stay past the edge of her fire. If she made an attack he would attempt to dodge and counter with his blade. He'd only make swings to harm, not to maim or kill however.

A menacing growl rumbled in Ryse's chest, and she bared her teeth, snarling at him. She didn't like the new nickname Oras had given her, it was almost as bad as being called a dog. Normally she wasn't in the mood for a fight, but this time was an exception. She was tired of the Atronach picking on her.
While she wasn't very experienced in fighting - and not very good at it in general - she wasn't about to let someone walk all over her. Regardless of who they are.
Leaping straight at him wasn't the smartest thing to do. Even she knew that, with her limited experience. Especially when Oras was holding a sword. Swords hitting anybody never tended to have good results. So she turned Invisible, seeming to vanish into thin air before the Atronach's eyes. Then she silently padded around so she could try striking him from behind. Surprise was a good advantage to have, especially against someone who looked like they knew how to wield a weapon that could gut her like a fish.
