welcome to Eldritch Academy
In a world of myths and mysteries, the pinnacle of the magical academies exists. Eldritch Academy offers education to all ages and species but specializes in the study and training of one's innate mystical capabilities, often called Eldritch Energies, Powers, or Unknowns, but more formally known as their Talent. However, tensions run high with the nations only holding a fragile peace as the Talents that rival the epitomes of technology change the balance of power.
With the more recent uprising of evil Shades and introduction of combat-oriented programs into Talent-focused schools, nations grow more aggressive towards one another. The demand for resources grows, and skirmishes at the border of Arka and Mistere become more frequent. Monsters run into the nations from the Wildes, terrorizing villages and cities. The need for trained or in-training Hunters and Guardians has never been more urgent.

Tea, tea… gods why did indecisive have to struck now!? The girl stared at her precious collection, one half trying to remember which tea helps soothed stomachs and on the other trying to decide WHICH one to use. This is the time where having multiple choices has its downsides. Nai didn’t have just one or two to pick from, she has an entire china cabinet full of containers containing several varieties of teas. Asian teas taking primarily taking the bulk of her stash. That’s what she often drinks, she may have different teas from other nations. Particularly the unique blends Mistere offered when it comes to black tea but the girl…
Loved the flavours from her homeland. And it was that minor remembrance that got her to pluck out one of her milder sencha teas. Sencha was light enough, she recalled hearing somewhere that this type normally soothes upset stomachs. Might as well give it a shot then, Fang didn’t seem to complain too much. She hoped that was the case as well when it comes to tea. Without further thought she set about preparing a cup for him by fetching the kettle from the drying rack then filling it up with enough water for several cups before leaving it to heat up on the stove.
Now to wait… and exactly ten minutes later it was done. The kettle let out a loud cry as the pressure from the steam burst through its nose. The child moved to remove it from the stove before setting off to pour the freshly steamed water into the tea set with the prepped tea. In another few moments she was back, walking over to Fang with a cup of warm tea and another small plates of rice crackers she managed to find in her snack cupboards. “Here try this…” She coaxed. Placing the small plate on the Kotatsu table before she handed him the still steaming cup of tea.

Today was the day of improvements, even if they were small! His unsteady hands reached out for the cup and accepted it, nodding his thanks as he pulled it toward his face. Fang gave it a healthy sniff, expression softening in familiarity and anticipation. It'd been so long. It was silly to think he'd thought about missing tea in those very small moments between water filling his lungs and the darkness that it brought...but he had. Fang had had plenty of time to reflect on every facet of his live many times over. Never did he consider he'd be sitting on a modern day couch with a human girl, drinking another cup of tea. Sencha. His mother made this for him during molting and other ailments. He sipped it carefully, not because it was hot, but because his stomach was so utterly empty he expected the shock it would feel, and he was right. After one sip he paused, closing his eyes and trying to avoid the wince as it hit his stomach. At first he thought he'd be sick again, but once the tea properly got into his belly and sat, the wave of nausea passed and he took another sip. Life might be hell, but some parts weren't so bad.
About halfway through the tea he tried a rice cracker. It had the same impact as the tea, making him sit very very still for a few moments, but the discomfort passed and he could continue if he was careful. Maybe it was because he was so hungry, but just the little bit of food and drink was making him feel full and overall a bit better. There was a weakness that wouldn't leave until he fed on something quite different, but for now this would be more than fine. Fang looked up at his host again and offered an expression of gratitude. This girl was basically a stranger. She owed him nothing. Why she did all this for him, put up with all of the trouble he caused, he would never understand. Kurenai had invited a damaged boy into her home and worked too hard to save him, when he hardly wanted saving but had very little option otherwise. He felt a pang of guilt over what he'd be attempting soon. She worked so hard, only for him to hopefully take his own life. She'd be disappointed, but ultimately it'd be better for her to get back to normal. If he could fly off into the sunset first to shield her from it he would, but Fang wasn't dumb. He knew he was too weakened. He needed to feed on blood, and he'd rather die. He was pissed he knew he couldn't throw himself into Aubade and kill himself, because for sure that'd get his soul ripped out and end his suffering. Aubade was too far away.
It...was a shame, though. Regardless of his plans, he found himself wanting to get to know the Shimazu girl. He could tell she was from the same country as he was. She had a feeling of home that wasn't entirely because she closely resembled...her. But she was different from his former lover in many ways, more ways he noticed every minute she was near. Without being sure of exactly his motives, Fang couldn't deny that a small part of him wanted to get to know this gentle soul. To share the couch and drink tea together as friends unafraid of a fire raid any time they stopped to rest. Even now he hoped she'd sit beside him, as if just being in proximity to another living body after so long would soothe some sort of emotional need. The phoenix was starved in so many different ways, he could hardly consider what things would make any of it better.

If life was like this. It would be a dream to the girl who once dream of experiencing something as mundane as sharing a cup of tea with another person close to her age. To laugh, to talk about silly childish dreams without the nagging worry of being a productive member of her family. No sounds of honour being blasted down her throat. Or the need to show how…her life still has a use. In a world where she doesn’t have the shackles brought down by her family’s name and expectations on her shortening future. She wasn’t born yesterday, no matter how much she wished or prayed to the gods wont stop what reality has in store for her.
She’s a realist, that she’ll admit and admitting brings its own set on the table. Like how…knowing exactly the limits her body has. Nai might not tell people but inside she knew deep down that what the doctors spewed out of their mouths. She’ll get better, Nai has heard those words nearly a hundred times she lost count after reaching a hundred. If she followed their prescribed treatment her body would be the same as everyone else. Healthy, alive… and more importantly normal. She wanted to believe.
Just once Nai wanted to ignore the faint pessimistic voice mocking her from behind. It’s a dream… an impossible dream for her to believe. But once… wasn’t illegal. Even for a split moment she yearned for that chance. It wasn’t until Fang’s movement did her mind had a chance to free itself from her steadily descending thoughts. The slight crackle of a cracker being nibbled brought her back from her reverie as her gaze shifted from the thick layered cloth lining the bottom of her kotatsu towards the lone red head silently munching…?
Munching?? Her eyes grew wide once it sunk into her mind that the image she was seeing was real. Fang…was eating. Was she?... Overreacting? Taking things into context when she should at the very least be pleased that the boy was taking steps to eat? In this case her surprise warranted enough of a reaction that her mask momentarily slipped. Numbly she nodded, happy. She was happy he was eating.
Baby steps Nai… Fang needed baby steps. The next goal she has was to get him to speak. Sounds like a tall order isn’t it? But Nai was in no hurry… sure limited time might have meant it, but she wasn’t going to force him. That would result in either him backing down two steps or him being challenge enough to answer but she doubted the latter. Fang didn’t seem like a person who gave much thoughts to challenges. “No problem…” She smiled back at him, as if listening to his internal plea the child gracefully sat next to him on the couch. Moving as easily and as silent as a weightless ghost she glided from her position infront of him then towards the free spot beside him on the couch. “Etto…” She reluctantly began, mulling over sentences she could use to break the ice surrounding their silence. “Would…you like to go with me to the library later on?...” She finally let the question free after much deliberating. “I mean… unless you want to return to bed…” She glanced away momentarily. She was… offering him a way to see the world outside her room. That is if he wants to take it. She wouldn’t fault him if he decided to decline her offer. It was sudden, completely out of the blue without a decent warning towards him.

And another victory! Fang looked over at her, tilting his head a little as if he was thinking it over. A library, hm? He was curious about the outside. His body was sore from laying in bed so long, so he didn't really want to go back there. Now that his fog had lifted, he should try and stay distracted so he couldn't think too much on the bad memories. Fang nodded and accepted her offer. Pulling his legs up on the couch and situating on them so he was kneeling, he bowed a proper thanks to her. She was being very nice to him. It was a kindness he couldn't even consider how to possibly repay.
Once he'd sat with her a few moments and enjoyed the proximity of another person, he rose and padded back over to her poor bookshelf. It couldn't stay like this. Once it was cleaned up, they could go to the library, right? A little less shaky than before, he lifted the shelves and put them back in their place, then began picking up and placing books. Crimson eyes roved over them as he did, frowning a little. The language didn't look familiar. Would all the books in the library be unreadable to him? Fang fretted over this a little, since he did love to read. More and more out of touch, it seemed.

He was woefully out of touch. He’s been trapped in that thrice damned jar for who knows how long. Nai didn’t want to think how long, the moment she does it’ll go straight for the worse before her imagination eyes the better part. Was there even a better part? No, not at with this one there isn’t. The sweet child’s gaze followed towards the boy. A giggle echoed at his attempt of a bow. He…was clearly thanking her. The child’s laughter flowed as sweet as the breeze flowing out in a spring day. Melodic as the birds that loved to chirp outside their window during warmer less chilly days.
Winter was now. It’s here, judging from the full frost clotting against the window glass. Winter, cold… and she was bound to force him to walk in clothing not fit to survive in low temperatures. Oh what a pickle she landed herself in. In her haste, she neglected to mind the boy’s only clothing. Not to mention how… he barely had much on his hands anyway. He… only had a few clothes to spare, from the few shirts that Kiran lent him to the couple ones she bought with her own money for him. The guy had nothing…
She’s shamed to say she forgot to buy him decent winter clothes. Fail. Nai reached her hand over to smack her forehead in realization. How… stupid. She chastised herself. Barely watching Fang’s own barely hidden worries about the languages shared in the world they live in. There’s a lot, three hundred years worth of languages that changed. Some died, some created, the world isn’t flat as people wanted to pretend it is. The world has plenty of lands each their own culture.
Her books detailed numerous knowledge about cultures and old legends. A few were about spells while several, maybe ten or so was all about alchemy and potion making. Something he might find interesting once he learns the language. “Hmm… You need a jacket first…” She muttered softly, another internal debate waged between her and her common sense. Heart was trying to win why her logic was trying to get her to just go out and buy. But they didn’t have the luxury of time, not when it’s a trek and a half to get to the city to buy the mentioned clothes. She might…she bit her lip as the thought made a move to finish itself. Cheat. That’s the word.
Cheat.
With the only way she knew how.
By using her curse.
She gulped, the sigh shifted into a defeated slump of her shoulders before she excused herself once more. “Take it easy Fang-kun…don’t overexert yourself im going to look if I have any jackets…” And with that…she went back to the bedroom. Only this time…she locked the damn door for added security.

It took a little time for him to get the shelving unit back in place and all the contents in it. He was certain it wasn't organized like however she had it, but she could either do it later or tell him how when they got back. He didn't think he needed a jacket, but he wouldn't fight her on it. Phoenixes were hot blooded. They barely needed clothes in the winter. However, her heart was in the right place, so whatever.
The last book he picked up seemed to be in some sort of modernized version of his natural tongue. He could make out a few letters and possibly some words, so he took that book with him to the window to peer out across the wintery campus. Fang was anxious. The unknown was kinda scary. He wasn't the same guy that he was back all those years, so not knowing yourself let alone the world you now lived in was daunting. His eyes alternated between the scene before him and the pages of what seemed to be a book on Hisakawa. Probably history or something. If nothing else he was seeing pictures of his home, some familiar though very old, and occasionally places where the terrain was recognizable but the structures were foreign to him. Home. His fingers ran over a particularly dated picture of the eastern city. Where his family and friends still alive? It was tough to kill a phoenix unless they were guilty of breaking a rule, but who knew what could have happened. The war was full of soul eating species, so not even his kind were completely safe. Too bad he couldn't find a soul devouring species now.

Ink and paper… funny how two simply things was the solution to her dilemma. In times of necessity her annoyance towards her own issues with her talents takes a backpedal and from hate it takes on a 360 view point to actual need. She hated it, loathed it. Nai both abhorred her curse but at same time logical stand. She cant deny… she couldn’t deny the usefulness it has when she truly did need it. For a girl who hated taking shortcuts or being dependant on anything it stung her pride to know how in the end she has to turn to what she hated to fix her problem.
Her problem was as simple as they come. Fang needed clothes, while she could make it. She knew well enough how to sew to be able to handle sewing a few clothes up for him like she did a couple of days ago. But a jacket, a winter jacket wouldn’t be as simple as a few hours. Something that complex needed more materials and time she didn’t have to spare. She needed one now, if her gaze went from the floor to her desk. The temptation was there, to her desk filled with writing materials from her sketchbook to her notebooks, and numerous other blank papers she had neatly stacked into a pile within easy reach should she ever need one take down notes or do her school work.
Within the neatly state of her desk the only distraction it has to fully being called ‘neat’ was the two opened text books sitting right in the middle. Her history work… she frowned slightly, fetching the pen innocently sitting on her half done paper before she took another blank sheet. Time…to get this over with.
Anything to get Fang out and walking like she promised Kiran.
It’s done… the final sketch was done. And as expected her unpredictable talent decided to show itself by manifesting what was once a flat image made from ink into the world outside from its paper home. The faint ripples she knew appeared before the parchment before a honest to goodness cloud of smoke appeared out of nowhere. Where there were only her books a jacket now rested. The same one that once was a mere drawing on paper was now a part of the real world. A jacket… a size bigger than Fang’s frame but she wanted to be sure it fitted. Grabbing onto the clothing she rushed back, ignoring how her skin now looked a bit paler than her normal pale tone. The dizziness would soon set but for now… she had to give this to fang. “I found one.” The girl announced, ignoring again the faint hum of a headache growing at back of her head. Now to look for… She didn’t need to search long before she found him resting by the window with a book in his hand. “Do you still want to go Fang-kun?”

Turning to look at her once she returned, his deep pools of red took in the jacket with a little surprise. Where had that come from? It was too big to be hers, but he knew he didn't own one before. He had basically nothing than the few articles she and Kiran had given him to keep him from being naked. But to be honest, he didn't even know where his stuff was, since he'd just started moving around today. Placing the book down on the table as he turned from the window, Fang silently moved to her and picked up the jacket. She'd gone to all that trouble to find it, the least he could do was wear it.
Putting it on, it was a little big, but comfortable and perfect anyway. He nodded that he still wanted to go, though now that he was closer to her, he could have sworn her skin was lighter. While he was seemingly a well mannered boy, there was a weird disconnect with how he dealt with personal space. The back of his hand reached out to lightly touch her forehead, checking temperature while also sorta asking if she was feeling ok. Then he took a quick stock of her bruises, checking for extra bruising. She didn't have internal injuries, did she? Humans were rather fragile... Perhaps his attention to detail was going to be a curse for her. With a head tilt of concern, he looked directly into her face as if awaiting an explanation. Was she in pain? Was she feeling sick? Taking care of him might have run her immunities down. It had to have been stressful...

For a split second it was there. The gentle soul hiding behind the scarred-up shell of its current body. She saw it spark to life for a brief passage of a second. She knew from the get go, the way he didn’t hesitate to pull her out of the mess she unwittingly caused out of her own sheer need to prove her independence. She can handle it. She’s always reminded herself that simple tasks such as fetching items from top shelves didn’t need constant supervision from her family. She’s capable, she wasn’t invalid. She can move on her own two feet… its that need to say without putting it into words that caused her to be somewhat reluctant to voice out her need for help.
Even… with something she knew she wouldn’t be able to handle on her own. But Kurenai would still do it until the last second where she has to admit defeat and swallow her pride and for once reach out a hand for help. But for now… to soothe her damaged pride she’s willing to at least prolong herself from asking outright. So imagine her surprise when her own willy thoughts caused her to lose sight of Fang. Giving him enough time to cross towards her without a single word or sound. His silent foot falls barely left a single sound as he traversed half way across the room to her side. She blinked, once she noted he’s closeness she had half the mind to step back and maintain her personal space but… he was being so kind. She couldn’t do it. She didn’t have the heart in her to surprise him.
“I’m fine…” She smiled at his worried gesture. Guilt ate at the back of her mind, already she was worrying him without intending it. She had hoped by changing back into her kimono that she would hide whatever side effects she got from using her talent. This time, intentional, she had to use it.
“I’m fine…” The girl repeated, meeting his gaze with her soft lilacs. “It’s probably just the lighting.” She tried to brush off his concern by adding some form of humour into her tone. “Come now we do have a library to see right?” The girl light heartedly chuckled while at the same time chucking her own growing headache aside. Maybe…working would get her mind off it, that normally works. She still had to some research about spell properties anyway. “And good it fits, its one of my brother’s old jackets I remembered I borrowed it once I guess I forgot…” Was her excuse. She needed a reason for why she had a jacket… though one thing she neglected to note was how ‘new’ it looked. It didn’t have the same worn out presence as something that was old and already used.

Again, he didn't trust her, but he had little reason to push it. He was just a stranger in her home. He'd invaded her space enough and definitely taken up enough of her time. The guilt was already heavy for what he'd put her through, yet he couldn't just silently argue with her and force her to be truthful. Fang was concerned about her honesty, though, since this jacket didn't seem used. But it was also a very foreign piece of clothing, so what did he know? Maybe modern clothes never aged. Either way, he bowed slightly in thanks, then moved toward the door and opened it.
Peering into the hall, he suddenly felt unsure. It was frightening, being so out of place. There were rumbles of voices from one end of the hall, and strange looking people walked to and fro. He had always been a bit cautious, but now the ninja bird was downright timid. He was scared of a whole bunch of things at once. Brows puckered as he froze in the doorway, fingers frantically kneading the hem of his borrowed jacket. It was so frustrating! He didn't feel like himself at all, but he really wanted to go to the library!

As soon as the fear appeared, a gentle hand offered its own brand of comfort by gently placing itself on Fang’s quickly stiffening set of shoulders. See, how like the tide his personality shifted from the calm seas it once was to the steadily growing tenseness showing through the way his shoulders seemed to steadily stiffen. His body language, Nai would be hard press not to notice how the silent boy acted no sooner had the door open.
He didn’t need words his body alone projected where his thoughts resided. The steadiness of her own growing worries brought up the gentle downward curving of her lips into the frown that now resided on her face. Hers however shared her own set of worries she had for the man. “Daijoubu… Fang-kun.” She soothed. Forcing her own frown into a gentle coaxing smile for the teen. “See…? Its perfectly fine.” She continued, walking up ahead of him into the hallway before she offered her hand towards him.
“Everything’s going to be fine…There’s nothing to be scared off. You’re perfectly safe.” She followed up with a soft chirped to her statement. She was trying to calm him down you see, by giving him the assurance he was going to be fine. The only issue preventing this from working is the boy himself. She harboured no such illusions that her attempts would dent his fear. Fear caused by trauma has its own brand of demons a simple appeasement wont easily clear but it was worth a shot right? Her offered hand was still stretched out towards him. The only thing its waiting for is if he would take it.

He didn't flinch under her hand on his shoulders like he might have a few days ago. The soft strokes she'd given his hair while he laid in shut-down mode seemed to have gotten him used to her specific brand of touch. She cooed to him, and despite his trepidation and instinct to turn and run back into the bedroom's now familiar safety, he lingered in the door and watched her. She went into the hall. Made the effort to try and help him, lure him out. Fang wanted to overcome this obstacle, no matter how small. Get a good look outside before he tried to end it all. No matter how many times she said he was safe, he had a hard time believing it. Part of him knew all the dangers he'd been in were probably long gone. By all rights, this was the safest he'd ever been. But the trauma, the centuries long fear was hard to turn off. It felt as if one of his tormentors would pop around a corner at any moment, shackle him, destroy what little dignity he still had. The guards would return and haul him to a new jar. It didn't make sense, but that was part of how his damage worked on him.
Fang surprised himself. Just when he was sure he'd either run to the bathroom to hurl or hop back under the covers for a while, his right hand released the hem of the coat and hesitantly reached out. How long had it been since he'd reached out for another person's comfort? Once he realized it, the common motion felt so foreign that it distracted him from the panic. A calloused and scarred hand that couldn't stop a subtle shaking slid its fingers into her offered grip, taking gentle hold as he managed a couple steps into the hall. He flinched at every noise --and there were a lot of noises from the rowdy students-- but he seemed to actually take enough comfort in holding her hand to continue their journey out into the world.

He took it. She didn’t expect him to, but he did anyway. Its progress right? Another step in the right direction instead of two steps back. Kurenai offered a gentle smile. Silently offering her support while at the same time motivating in his quest to see the outside world. The world behind their bedroom door… Hiding wouldn’t help him, she knew so by experience. She hid once as well behind her own wall of books and knowledge and look where that got her? In a state where she cant even connect with her peers.
She doesn’t have problems making friends with them, but if they were to ask her to step in their shoes for a day as a teenager. She’ll be as lost as a small duck in the big wide ocean. She shook the thought off. Moving it back to clear her head of any other unwanted worries. Fang was with her, it wouldn’t do well to be distracted in the slightest when she has to keep an eye out for anything that might trigger him. And just as their luck would have it, they had to pick the time to leave the room during ‘hallway’ rush hour as she so exasperatedly named the rush of bodies moving to and fro within the halls. Students and fellow dorm mates sorted into Orchid, a few she recognized belonged to Sage who were probably there to visit friends.
Not like it was any of her business. But from time to time the girl’s curiosity mulled over each face she saw. Trying in a way as a game to put a personality behind those faces. Who were they?... What were their story… You know, simple curious musing. Oh don’t worry she doesn’t act on it, but it was a way to keep her mind busy. She was used to keeping it busy… “Were technically in a school…Gomen for the crowd that was my fault for not checking the time..” She sighed, uttering a quick apology to her silent companion as they moved out of the hallway and into the shared common rooms. A few more doors and they’ll soon be out of the Orchid dorms.
“Kurenai?” A voice snapped her back from her thoughts. Her mind reeled back, instantly trying to put a face to the voice as she turned her neck to look behind. Another student, one she recalled was another fellow student in one of her class. “I just sent my half of our joint report. Just thought I’d let you know.” He waved, he didn’t say much. The dark headed boy merely nodded back to the girl. His silvery eyes remaining momentarily on the timid red-head before it shifted back the device sitting on his lap. A laptop but to fang it might as well be another unknown. Technology hardly existed during his time. Now he’s in a world where everywhere he turn he saw new tech in the form of gadgets being carried around by the passing student.
“Hai,” The girl blinked back, tilting her head innocently as she offered a polite shift to her tone. “I’ll make sure to give it a quick glance later.” She bowed slightly before she tugged Fang along.

Fang felt like he couldn't get enough air. There were too many people. The steady stream of voices and bodies and smells (he was so thristy) made him want to run and hide, curl into a ball and over his ears and shrink from existence. They had little rectangles that somehow lit up and made noises, some almost like strange music while others had voices coming out of them. Not enough air. The hall swam a little as he trailed along behind Kurenai by the hand, almost in a daze. The faster they made it outside, the better. He could hardly wait. Fang was about to jump out of his skin.
But no! Nooo! They stopped. Someone was talking to her. He clenched his jaw instead of whimpering, like he felt like doing. Even under duress he couldn't bring himself to make a sound. Looking over the modern boy, he noticed the strange thing in his lap. What sort of weird magic did all of these people have! Little boxes with people and items trapped inside, making noises and flashing strange light. A portal? A prison? A symbiotic relationship between item and person, where the person bathed and gave nearly all attention to the glowing box that required their attention to survive? It was terrifying and confusing.
Though his eyes were locked on the horrifying piece of technology --oh no, it was sucking him in too-- he was tugged along long enough for him to break his attention from the gadget, at which point he couldn't get out fast enough. He couldn't breathe. Fang was one step away from hyperventilating. Pulling his hand from hers, he dashed the few feet forward until he could bust out of the dorm's doors and into the outside. A few steps out into the crunch frozen grass he stopped, bending over and resting his hands on his knees in an attempt to calm down and catch his breath.
....holy balls it was cold out here!

She knew it.
SHE DAMN CALLED IT.
It was too early for him. Nai realized her error too late when the boy’s nerves didn’t wain from further until it soon overwhelmed the poor weakened red head into a literal panic attack. “Wait Fang—” She was too late. She tried to call out and stop him but he fled and following after his wake the girl rushed after him. She had… to remind the guy that it was practically several degrees below positive outside.
The thought would have made her giggle in prospect at seeing how a phoenix can handle the cold in only a pair of basketball shorts but… seeing how Kiran was insane enough to walk out shirtless while doing his exercise regimen… Then she wouldn’t be too surprise if…Fang shared the same…-- The thought paused as soon as she caught sight of her new birdy roommate nearly bend over his knees catching breath. “Fang-kun..!” She rushed over, worry surrounded her lilac eyes as she ran her gaze over his body to check for any injuries.
By the kami… Nai felt like she was looking after a child. She hid her sigh, exasperated as she might be she was genuinely worried for the boy infront of him. She couldn’t help her nature, it was just in her to worry about people. “Are you alright?...Do you want to head back to the room instead?” She asked. This time she was willing to let him decide. She didn’t mind postponing a trip to the library, she can fetch it later when she sure he’s asleep.
