welcome to Eldritch Academy
In a world of myths and mysteries, the pinnacle of the magical academies exists. Eldritch Academy offers education to all ages and species but specializes in the study and training of one's innate mystical capabilities, often called Eldritch Energies, Powers, or Unknowns, but more formally known as their Talent. However, tensions run high with the nations only holding a fragile peace as the Talents that rival the epitomes of technology change the balance of power.
With the more recent uprising of evil Shades and introduction of combat-oriented programs into Talent-focused schools, nations grow more aggressive towards one another. The demand for resources grows, and skirmishes at the border of Arka and Mistere become more frequent. Monsters run into the nations from the Wildes, terrorizing villages and cities. The need for trained or in-training Hunters and Guardians has never been more urgent.

Her office is large. Some would prefer the term ostentatious, but the professor never saw the point of being a high-ranking faculty member without the space to jog around (or do some light swordplay).
As it is, swordplay is a touch difficult, as the side of the room free of near invisible crystal windows is covered in bookshelves. A rolling ladder leans against them (presumably so she can find books without spreading her wings, but...she could just as easily summon them to her hand with a flick of her finger. Cosmetic, then..?) Some of the books are well-worn (Complacency of the Learned, The Lay of a Broken-Winged Sparrow), some have barely cracked their spines and are seemingly there out of spite (On The Road, Walden), and some are just bizzare (Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff).
Her cherry-wood desk is covered in manuscripts, stacks of books, and glasses in all shapes and sizes. The professor decides that it's entirely too much work to get them figure out where she's left off this early in the morning and debates taking the private staircase up to the observatory, but quickly rejects the thought of...even more stairs. She throws open the heavy, royal blue curtains instead, letting in the soft morning light. It's the little things, she thinks as she settles in an armchair to read.

Just as she'd said, here it was Monday morning and here she was, standing at the base of the Astronomy Tower. Staring up at the very tall building, Ryse wondered how she hadn't known this was here in the first place. Then again, it wasn't exactly the closest building to her dorm room, and nearly all of her classes tended to be closer than this one. She tended not to travel to places she hadn't explored before. The Astronomy Tower was one such place.
The sun had just crested above the horizon line, but the student was already wide awake. Nothing new for her there. She always awoke when the sun rose. Her biological clock wouldn't allow her to sleep in no matter what day it was. The air was still a little chilly, but that was fine with her. She was using her heat to keep herself warm.
Looking up the tower, she was glad that it was dawn. Dawn meant nobody except for the earliest of risers would be awake. Or possibly other faculty that had to finish getting their papers ready for classes. It also meant nobody would see her when she did this.
Within a second, the human teenager had turned into a 7 ft 5 inch tall hybrid with a dog body, hawk feet for her back paws, feathery wings, and a beak showing at the end of her muzzle. Not your typical hybrid. But then again, she wasn't a typical Phoenix either. While Phoenixes had the ability to partially shape shift, summoning their wings when they needed or wanted to, Ryse didn't have that ability. If she wanted to fly, she was forced to transform. At least she could use her fire and she still had her strong sense of smell and hearing when she was in human form. Which was something she got from her Grim side.
Which was also partially why she was here at dawn in the first place. Professor Rose seemed to know more information about Church Grim in her first meeting with her in the library. And Ryse wanted to know what she knew.
Turning herself invisible was something she always found in handy. Especially at times like this. The professor wouldn't be able to see her, and none would other people. Doing just that, letting the cloak of invisibility cover herself and preventing others from knowing she was there in the first place, the hybrid spread her wings and launched into the air. She had to push with more force than a normal bird, as her bones weren't hollow and thus had to adjust to a heaver weight in various ways. Usually she had to take a running start before she could lift into the air. But this time she managed to do so without having to build up speed first.
Flying up the tower, Ryse rose higher into the air with each wingbeat. Within a few minutes, she reached the window the professor had mentioned, and hovering in the air, she lightly scratched on the glass with her claws. She couldn't transform back into a human or she'd fall, but neither did she have hands to knock with. She could speak, however, which was what she did next. "Professor Rose! It's me Ryse, I'm here!" Hopefully the teacher had been expecting her. Otherwise it would be really silly to have to dodge an attack of some sort if the teacher thought she was an intruder or something.

Although the professor thinks it distasteful to take visitors so early in the mornings, she found that hardly anone wanted to wake up that early anyway. Those who did were the interesting sort, so she ended up keeping her office open, if only to further her image as the most harmlessly bizarre professor on campus. The descriptor harmless is absolutely essential, she thinks, for sometimes I truly worry for the safety of my students, given some of the other faculty (read: Dawn).
Back on track. I'm expecting expecting a visitor.
She finds herself a short cloak to keep off the chill, the inside of which is enchanted with illusion magic (and nothing else. It's literally just a fashion statement). It's supposed to look like the sky, but the enchantment is a bit finicky and sometimes just plays "Saturday Shorts" on a loop, but—yes! It works! She rearranges the collar and moves to settle herself in the armchair, but before she can sit she hears a scratching on the glass.
...How curious. It seems that the girl's question the other day was a little more than idle curiosity. Although she's perfectly invisible, the barrage of information from the aether is unsurprisingly informative. "Give a man a mask and he will tell you the truth" and whatnot. Phoenix, Church grim, and...a hint of canine, for some reason. Whatever Ryse's reasons are, the professor isn't about to press because she has a moral backbone and it isn't made of cottage cheese.
The professor strides towards the massive window and opens it, gesturing for Ryse to come in. "Heavy, heavy! I don't have hollow bones either. It's hard, isn't it? Come in, then! Do you want a scone? I have raspberry. And rooibos tea."
The scones are freshly baked, though the Astronomy tower is far enough away from pretty much any source of food that the scones' current state could be called into question. There is no oven, so one would assume fire magic. Probably.

At the professor's comment Ryse stuttered in the air, shock and surprise hitting her. She nearly forgot to flap for a second, but upon beginning to fall she quickly recovered, and after a cautious moment, landed inside the room. Transforming back into human form, she dropped the invisibility, panting a little from hovering as long as she had. She was more built to gliding for long distances and maneuvering at high speeds in the air than staying in one place. Doing so was a little tiring.
"How.. did you know about that?" She asked hesitantly. She'd never told anyone she didn't have hollow bones. So how did Professor Rose know? She couldn't read minds, as far as she knew. Did she use some sort of spell? She was a teacher of magic, after all. The second question out of her mouth was, "You can fly too?" She hadn't seen any wings when she'd first met the teacher in the library. But then again, some species were able to hide their wings. Like vampires and phoenixes for example. So maybe Rose could hide hers as well.

"The aetheric arts give me a lot of information," the professor says, her voice schooled to neutrality. "Preferred gender, species, weight...things like that. The information is incredibly vague, though, so one has to develop an association to it. For example..." She takes a potted plant from her desk. "The aether doesn't tell me this is aloe vera; rather, it feels like it has antibacterial properties. That, combined with its appearance and my knowledge of plant life, lets me recognize it as aloe vera. It's bascially like a very advanced gut feeling. Unfortunately, it won't be of much use to someone without diversity of experience, simply because there's not much prior knowledge to draw on." She tilts her head thoughtfully. "Although...I'm making it sound more powerful than it actually is...a lot of the information is junk, or simply stuff I don't need," she frowns as if remembering a particularly unpleasant experience, "Or want. Scone? I'm trying out a new recipe."
"As for my wings..." She takes off her cloak—shame, really, since it hasn't even messed up yet—and tosses it on the desk, displacing a bunch of papers. She pays them no mind. "They're mostly—" there's a rush of aether in the room, along with the smell of jasmine and spring frost— "no, shit, wrong—" and it disappears as quickly as it came.
"Let's try that again..." the rush of aether is back, this time with the smell of jasmine. The bite of frost is gone this time, but a pair of ink-black wings, each as wide as she is tall, spring from her back—those of a crow. The wind from their sudden appearance sweeps the rest of the papers off her desk.
The professor heeds them not.
Smiling proudly, she says, "They're mostly a product of the aether. Fun stuff! Please have a scone."

Ryse was both intrigued and worried. Did this mean that Professor Rose knew what she was? She was very careful at hiding her Grim nature. Though her sense of smell and hearing wasn't something she could just turn off whenever she wanted to. She often heard things that were supposed to be private, or most scents were ten times stronger for her than they were for other people. Which was a blessing and a curse depending on what it was she scented.
In this case, she noticed the change in scent from jasmine and frost to just jasmine. And then the teacher cursed just before it changed. Was there a connection between it? Probably not, but then again she didn't know the professor all that well. Maybe she'd remembered something she'd forgotten.
Upon being offered a scone, the teenager couldn't refuse. They smelled delicious, and it made her mouth water. "Thank you." Picking up a rasberry one, she bit into it. "Your wings are pretty cool. Do you need help picking up your papers?" She'd noticed that the professor's papers had flown everywhere upon the teacher summoning her wings. There was quite the mess everywhere.

"Nope!" she says cheerfully, letting her wings vanish in another flare of aether. She waves her hand, and the papers are swept so that the majority of them press themselves against the window. The floor is clear now, but... "Shame about the view, really, but I suppose it can't be helped. Ah, but enough of that!"
She claps her hands, evidently summoning some demon to maintain her elegance, for anyone with a now-glitching cloak and the majority of their papers tinting the sunlight parchment-ivory against the window couldn't possibly maintain any semblance of poise.
Right?
"You didn't come here so I could show off, although I'm glad you like my wings." The professor waves over a teapot and some cups, thankfully with more delicacy than she managed with the papers. "For the scones. Tell me, what piques your curiosity so? I can't imagine you walked all the way here just for fun."

Ryse vaguely thought about the disaster that would happen if the window were to open, blowing the papers stuck to it out into the wind. She wondered if it was the wisest thing to leave them there, but she didn't say anything. The professor knew what she was doing. Maybe.
At the teacher's question, Ryse took a seat on one of nearby chairs, pouring herself a cup of tea as a distraction while she gathered her thoughts. Or more accurately, came up with an excuse why she was here. "Well... in the library you seemed to know about Church Grim, and I would like to learn about them, so um... here I am." Not a lie. But not the entire truth either. She also wanted to see if she could help the teacher's eyesight. But she wouldn't know for certain if it would work. And if it didn't work, her eyesight might be worse off than before. She was hesitant to take the risk.
