welcome to Eldritch Academy
In a world of myths and mysteries, the pinnacle of the magical academies exists. Eldritch Academy offers education to all ages and species but specializes in the study and training of one's innate mystical capabilities, often called Eldritch Energies, Powers, or Unknowns, but more formally known as their Talent. However, tensions run high with the nations only holding a fragile peace as the Talents that rival the epitomes of technology change the balance of power.
With the more recent uprising of evil Shades and introduction of combat-oriented programs into Talent-focused schools, nations grow more aggressive towards one another. The demand for resources grows, and skirmishes at the border of Arka and Mistere become more frequent. Monsters run into the nations from the Wildes, terrorizing villages and cities. The need for trained or in-training Hunters and Guardians has never been more urgent.

The teenager was always one to go to the library when she needed a quiet place to think. Even though it was 12:30 in the morning, Ryse found that she couldn't sleep, no matter how hard she tried. Normally she slept straight through the night, but today it was the exact opposite. So here she was, approaching the library doors.
She stopped in front of the library, looking up at the grand doors for a moment, thinking. It was the middle of the night after all, and even though she was pretty sure the school didn't have a curfew - that she knew of, anyways - she knew the staff members would wonder why a student was up this late. But then again, it meant that the library would be empty. A quiet sanctuary where she could read and research without worry of being interrupted. It was why she had come here in the first place.
After looking for a moment longer, she grabbed hold of the door handle and pulled open one of the large doors, the hinges not even making a sound as she pulled. Stepping inside, she was greeted with more darkness. The door shut heavily behind her, the sound echoing around the building before falling silent once again. Here there was a deeper darkness that what was outside. Outside there was the moon and stars and occasional lights illuminating parts of the school. In the library there was no such thing. Moonlight shown through the windows, casting ghostly light inside the building, but it wasn't enough for her to see. The numerous rows of bookshelves looked like statues in the very dim light, and shadows were cast on every surface. Not that it scared her; she knew there was nothing here that would hurt her. The library was completely empty of any living thing except for her.
Summoning a small flame in her palm, she used the light to navigate around until she located a candle. Smiling as she picked it up, she lit the candle wick and watched as it grew in brightness. Then she began searching the shelves, looking specifically for anything Church Grim related or anything that would relate to her class subjects. Finding a few books she wanted to read, she gathered them in her arms and walked to a small table at the far end of the library, taking care with the candle as she gently set it down. Sitting down and opening one of the books, pulling out the small notebook and pencil from her jacket pocket, she began to read and take notes.

The Vamp Wolf | All this researching was getting quite cubersome, and Sharaku had half the mind to quit, except that he wasn't the one to quit in the middle of doing something. Therefore, of course he actually wouldn't, no matter how much he was going to complain about his predicament internally. Complaining to himself was in fact a very good way of keeping himself sane. Blaming everything you could was oddly satisfying, when you couldn't afford to just stop what you were doing. Anyway, research. He had just gotten back from an early evening outside search, which had apparently taken longer than he had planned, given that it was already past midnight, but he still needed to look some things up. Eh, well nobody would stop him, right? Not like it was illegal to move around school ground in the middle of the night, and he was so not going to sleep right now anyway. Walking into the library, he'd very quickly be forced to notice he wasn't the only one deciding to read at this late time. It'd be hard not to with a single brighter light illuminating the otherwise dark room. Well, that was no matter. He could do what he wanted to do, alone or not. Guess it wouldn't hurt to be polite though. Boy was that light in the darkness actually straining his eyes however. He couldn't even properly tell who the person was until his eyes adjusted. "Hey. Hope I'm not interrupting you."The girl would potentially remember him, although he did look a bit different than that one time they met. His hair was pinned up neatly, and he was wearing quite formal clothing, white shirt, suit pants and all. A difference from his typically more casual appearance. He probably even looked older like this. |

For most people, reading about how to survive in high altitude climates would be a snooze-fest. But for Ryse, since Professor Theo had been teaching her about exploration methods - and the fact that she'd had to scale some very scary and dangerous mountains before - she thought it would be beneficial if she caught up on some research for the subject. Her eyes were fixed on the words on the page, scribbling down what she thought was important and drawing images of examples to help elaborate on things she would show the teacher later.
Beside that book, also laid open, was a book about Church Grim which gave descriptions on their behaviors and their abilities. She'd already recognized some behaviors mentioned in the book, as she herself were prone to doing such things. But it was what the book said about their abilities that she was really paying to. Apparently turning invisible - which she could do - wasn’t the only ability they had.
She was so focused on what she was doing that she didn't notice another student had entered the library until she heard someone speak. She jumped in her seat, startled that she hadn't even smelled someone else approaching, and looked up. The student looked familiar.... her mind scrambled to think of his name. She knew she'd met him before, she just couldn't quite remember where. "You're... " She knew it started with an 'S'. Sh.... As she thought, the name suddenly clicked in her mind. "...Sharaku, right?"
Granted, he looked different than he had before. But she recognized his face now that she remembered his name. "Oh no no, you're fine. Would you like to uh... sit down?" She noticed that he seemed to be squinting; maybe his eyes were sensitive to light. Using her talent, she dimmed the flame so that it wasn't so bright. The candle was still lit, and provided enough light for her to see the words on the page, but hopefully it was dim enough where it wouldn't hurt the other student's eyes.
She was surprised someone else was up this late. Or that anyone else would come into the library in the middle of the night. Then again, she knew that other species were nocturnal. Maybe Sharaku was, or maybe he just liked staying up all night.

The Vamp Wolf | He’d blink a couple times, a little surprised, not having expected that he’d be running into someone who knew him. Especially given his typical lack of effort when it came to making acquaintances. Now that he had a moment to get more used to the light though, he did recognize the girl. Well, sort of. It wasn’t like he really knew her. He was pretty sure he hadn’t even caught her name before. Not that he could have, when she hadn’t said it at all.
He’d cough to clear his throat. “I suppose so, yes. You’re…the one from the mass back then, right? I don’t think I’ve heard you mention your name though.” She had been the quietest one on the scene, unless the fact that the vampire guy got himself incapacitated counted against him for that. Not that there had been a lot of talking to do, with it being primarily Fluffy going on and on about her abilities once she wasn’t being hostile.
“I’ll…in a moment. You don’t have to do that though. I was just used to the darkness, that’s all.” He’d adjust to the brightness after a while. It just took a bit after walking though the dark only, and while he didn’t like the light as much as darkness, it wasn’t going to burn his eyes or anything like that. That said, he did need to get the book he wanted to look into first, so he’d walk a bit off to the shelves to find what seemed like the best bet for what he needed. It’d take him maybe three minutes to find a suitable one, before he walked back to the table, giving the girl a questioning glance. “I’m…guessing you’re friends with the vampire guy? Or were you out there at random back then?” He recalled that she had called him by name, so they had to know each other at the very least. |

“Yeah, that’s right.” She nodded, smiling. Then after a few moments she realized that he didn’t even know her name, even though she knew his. She wanted to facepalm herself. How rude of her not introduce herself!
“Oh, I’m sorry! Where are my manners? My name is Ryse. Ryse Azar. It’s nice to officially meet you. I uh… heard you tell your name to Fluffy when she was talking to you. That’s how I know your name….” She chuckled a little in embarrassment, rubbing the back of her head.
At times her sharp canine senses could be a blessing, but at other times it was a curse. She really hadn’t meant to overhear his name, but considering that they had been facing a dangerous person who could’ve easily killed them all, all of her senses had been on high alert. It had taken days to get the scent of blood out of her nose after the ordeal. And the sight of Fluffy beaming while holding a deer skull dripping with blood and gore still hadn’t left her mind; she had nightmares about it sometimes.
When Sharaku mentioned her knowing the vampire, she shrugged. “Mr. Ozaki's nice, but honestly I don’t know if we’re friends. We were on a mission together, researching about Blood Devils, but other than that we haven’t really talked to each other all that much. I was just out and about that night when I came across them. Nyx was unconscious, Ozaki was checking on her, and then she turned into Fluffy and...well… that whole thing happened.” She didn’t even know what had caused it in the first place, and if she was being honest she hoped it didn’t happen again. Once was frightening enough.
Turning her attention away from talk of the Blood Devil, she looked at the book Sharaku was holding, tilting her head slightly in curiosity. “Are you doing research for school, or just passing the time?”

The Vamp Wolf | “I do recall having done that, yes.” He was the only one she asked the name of, for some reason. Not that it really mattered to him as to why though. It wasn’t something to lose sleep over. “There’s no need to apologize for that though. I can’t exactly be offended by just not knowing people’s names….” Why should he be? It wasn’t even in his habit to call people by their names at all, unless he had to address them without them knowing it was meant for them specifically, or it was a serious matter and he felt the need to get the intent across with more emphasis.
He’d close his eyes briefly with a thoughtful frown when she spoke about Ozaki, shaking his head with a faint snort afterwards. “He’s….” An insufferable over-emotional dork, more like. “Well, that’d be a complicated conversation to have. I feel he wouldn’t appreciate being discussed however.” Honestly, he wasn’t sure how he felt about the vampire’s ‘niceness’. It was too…how to even put it, a clingy sort of nice? Too wound up about everything, and couldn’t let things go. The guy’s brand of nice wasn’t one he was very comfortable with, to be frank. Especially the whole ‘behind the back’ method of doing it, without actually consulting with the person he was trying to help unless it became unavoidable. It was very easy for niceness to turn into nightmares when nothing was talked out, and thus a wrong step was made…
Anyway, enough of that nonsense for now. “It’s…more of a personal project, you could say.” It was a bit more complex than that, but he didn’t think it was something he needed to be disclosing. That said, if she did take a close enough of a look, she could note the book he had appeared to be about blood constitution and its uses. “Sitting alone in the library at night would have been an unusual way to pass time….that’s actually a good question though. You’re here at this ungodly time as well, why is that?” She didn’t seem like a night creature. He could smell some canine off of her and stuff, but he couldn’t pinpoint what kind exactly it was…. |

She looked at him curiously at his reaction to talking about the vampire. She wasn’t sure what Sharaku thought of Mr. Ozaki; did the two not get along? Though in reaction to his next statement, she silently agreed. She doubted anyone would like to be discussed when they weren’t present. Regardless, what he thought of the vampire wasn’t her concern.
The teenager turned her attention back to the book he held in his hands. Blood constitution and its uses, huh? That was an interesting book choice. She wondered why he picked up that book specifically. There were dozens of other books he could’ve chosen. She was tempted to ask about it, but held her tongue. Despite her curiosity wanting to know, he’d said it was a personal project. Meaning it was none of her business.
At his question of why she was up so late, she shrugged once again. “I just couldn’t sleep, that’s all. Thought it would be nice to catch up on some reading and study for my classes.”
She wasn’t quite sure why she couldn’t fall asleep. There was the phoenix part part of her that wanted to crash into bed and zonk out until the morning like she usually did. But she found there was a part of her that pulled her to stay awake, attracted to the darkness. This had been happening for the last couple of days. Which was why she went to the library. It was true that she’d come here to study, but she also wanted to see if this strange feeling was due to the church grim half of her heritage. They were graveyard keepers after all. She assumed it was natural for them to be more active at night than during the day.
Which…. now that she thought about it… was really going to mess up her sleep schedule. Waking up at dawn every morning was a pain at times, but staying up at night and waking up so early was going to make her grumpy during the day.
Now that the other student was sitting across from her, she realized that he smelled a little like Ozaki. Was Sharaku a vampire too? It would make sense given the book he had. However….. his scent was different. Maybe he was a species similar to a vampire. But it would be rude to outright ask what species he was. So instead she asked, “What classes are you taking?”
Sharaku was clearly older than her, and thus she hadn’t seen him in any classes she herself was in. What was his major? Was he studying to be a scholar? A guardian? Or was he a hunter?

The Vamp Wolf | “Hmmm….” The taller of the pair would hum under his breath in thought as he scanned over the table of contents at the beginning of his book, trying to gauge whether this would do for what he was after, or if he would have to go grab more books. He would glance up at his company briefly though as she mentioned not being able to sleep though. “Well, you don’t seem too worried about that. I assume you don’t have classes in the upcoming morning then?” If she did, she’d definitely have to worry about getting enough sleep to be alert enough for school. Then again, he pulled shenanigans like that frequently himself, so it wasn’t impossible for others to perform well even on lack of sleep.
“Classes?” He’d blink a few times, unsure how to answer that question. He doubted she expected him to name each and every class he attended after all. Well, she could be after that, but it would be a rather unusual information to be fishing for. “I’m…well, mostly hunting classes. I guess that is what you were inquiring about?” It was a truthful enough answer either way. Of course, he took some random unrelated classes as well, for the benefit of more credits in case there happened to be a class or two he couldn’t finish for whatever reason. He didn’t think he had seen her in any class before, but he would have to admit that he didn’t always pay a lot of attention to who his classmates were, meaning he couldn’t be absolutely sure in that regard. She looked younger than him, however not all classes were school grade or age restricted either, making anything a possibility. Not a very big one, given how many students attended this school, but it was there nevertheless. |

She shook her head. "No, I'm not too concerned about it. It hasn't happened very often." At least, Ryse wasn't worried yet anyways. If it continued for more than just a few days though, then she would become concerned. Right now she was just doing research to make sure it wasn't anything to be worried about.
Upon hearing his major, she looked up from her book in interest. "Oh, so you're a Hunter major? I'm a scholar major myself." Hunter made sense for him. She doubted he was the type to study foreign creatures, or go looking for the long lost artifact of whatever civilization they happened to be researching at the time. He seemed like the kind of person to kill monsters, and do his job rather well.
She wrote down some notes in her notebook, having reached an rather interesting part in the book that talked about how to survive in the cold and snow. Definitely seemed useful. As she continued writing, the scent from Sharaku drew her attention once again. She'd tried to ignore it while they were talking, but the question had been gnawing away at her, and now her brain was dying to ask him.
Alright, that's it. She couldn't help it.
Looking up at the other student, she opened her mouth to ask. "So um... sorry to ask you this, but... what species are you?" She was aware how out of the blue this might seem, so she provided some context to the question. "It's just that, well, you smell kind of like a vampire. But... not. If that makes any sense." She rubbed the back of her head in embarrassment, chuckling sheepishly. "I-if you don't want to tell me, that's fine. I was just... wondering. That's all."
Damn her curiosity. She swore it was going to get her into trouble one of these days. She hoped Sharaku wouldn't be offended by this question.

The Vamp Wolf | “Is that…so.” He’d flip over a page in the book absentmindedly. “I’ve always found researching to be a little boring all by itself. It’s a useful component of figuring out the course of action to take, but the amount of patience studying something tends to take…” He’d shake his head slightly at that. He was far too restless sometimes to just sit back and do the information gathering tasks without at the very least getting to use the results of it for something. If he ever did anything in that field, it was typically a research on something he personally found useful or important to whatever he was currently doing.
He’d scan over a couple paragraphs, briefly considering the irony. He wouldn’t be that bad of a scholar, were he to actually be interested in the job. With his memorization skills thanks to his talent, he could very well excel at gathering information in as short a time as it was possible, as he had little need for wasting his time on making sure he would not forget any of it. No notes or any of that chaotic nonsense. Except that he simply felt like he’d eventually die of boredom from the lack of action, or he’d find himself losing interest once he’s heard or dug up enough to get the big picture of the matter. He had little interest towards artifacts and other random historical pieces too. There was no reason for him to want to know about that…
“…hm?” His little moment of mental concentration was broken rather quickly as the somewhat unexpected line of questioning came. It wasn’t every day that he was asked such a thing directly. Only two people knew exactly what he was at the moment rather than just guessing him as a vampire, and to be fair, neither of them did so because they’ve flat out asked. Ozaki knew because of the blood drive and the fact that he had to fill out the information on the form, and Nyx had simply seen him shift forms and figured out what his other half was from seeing him as a wolf.
He’d wave a hand dismissively once he processed the situation. “I don’t really mind being asked.” It could be seen as a personal question for some perhaps, but he didn’t consider himself to be sentimental over something as simple as that. He was what he was after all, and that was not going to change whether he told people or hid it from them. Though he admitted sometimes being mysterious made it more interesting. He liked seeing whether people could figure it out without him stating it outright. He’d give her a brief smirk, showing his fangs. “You’re not wrong however. I am a vampire. It’s just that I’m…only half of one.” It ought to be a fairly simple deduction anyway. Hybrids in general were not that rare, even though his combination in particular was not a very pleasing one. |

The teenager gave a small smile in amusement as he stated he found research a bit boring, and that he lacked the patience that studying required. "It can be boring at times, but it can be interesting too. Like finding a new species nobody has discovered yet, or discovering how people in the past lived, what their culture was like, what they ate, what languages they spoke-"
Ryse suddenly stopped talking as she realized that perhaps she was talking too much. She tended to do that with subjects she was passionate about. "...and I'm rambling. I tend to do that sometimes..." She wondered if Sharaku was getting annoyed with her talking. They were in a library, and here she was jabbering away.
Talk of school caused her mind to begin wandering to careers. She wasn't sure what she wanted to do when she finally finished her mastery. Maybe she could be like Professor Theo and travel around the world; an explorer. Or maybe she could be an archeologist. Or a zoologist. There were so many things she could do. It was hard for her to choose. But she still had years to go; she was only seventeen. She wasn't even in college yet.
The teenager was pulled out of her musing as she heard Sharaku tell her he was half vampire. Huh... so she was right. Kind of, anyways. It explained the strange book choice. Sharaku would see the curiosity in her eyes, but she didn't pry any further. She did wonder what his other half was, though. She couldn't pinpoint his scent. It wasn't one she'd smelled before. The closest thing she could compare it to was some sort of.... dog? But she could also be wrong. She hadn't ran across that many species.
She was silent for a few long moments as she thought about what to say. He'd shared with her some personal information. It seemed only fair that she share the same. There was a moment of hesitation, then. "I'm half phoenix." Only one person knew what she was, and the only reason Oras knew was because he'd made her so mad that she transformed out of anger. Her rage had gone to her head, and she hadn't been thinking clearly when she did it.
She hadn't told anyone this; not her friends nor her professors... though she was sure the teachers probably knew. The school staff most likely had access to records of the students attending their classes. She usually tried hiding what she was, but she'd only recently accepted her grim heritage. Even so, it was a struggle for her to say this much, when she'd been actively trying to hide that part of her for most of her life.

The Vamp Wolf | Golden eyes blinked a couple times in mild surprise, before he was leaning back in his chair, crossing one leg over the other with an amused huff. “Had I wanted you to shut up, I would have told you so.” As a matter of fact, it would have been perfectly easy to just not approach her and sit down at a different table, or even grab a book to borrow back to his room instead of staying around to read in the library. Had he been against the idea of getting interrupted by talking, he would not have agreed to this in the first place. For tonight though, he wasn’t in a whole lot of rush, which was why he decided it wasn’t going to hurt him.
“At any rate…I suppose it’s to each their own. I’ve never quite cared about those types of discoveries. Why dig back into the past that is long gone when we have a future we ought to forge a path into? Knowing what language an ancient civilization spoke doesn’t really further anyone’s life. I guess it could be a hobby but…” He’d shrug lightly. “It never grabbed my interest enough.” If he needed to know, he’d figure it out, but to discover trivial details like that only for the sake of exploration…? He’d have to be very interested in that particular topic to commit himself to it, or have someone drag him into it at the very least.
Hm. “A fire bird? I guess that’s not the part of you making you stay up at night, eh?” To be fair, he did not know a lot about phoenixes, but they were certainly creatures that preferred the sun, as far as he could remember. It was only a casual inquiry however, as much as he was somewhat interested, given that he hardly knew any hybrids around here personally. While they weren’t too uncommon, he hadn’t had the luck of getting acquainted with any that he knew of. Which was arguably not surprising given his track record of not making many friends, but still. |

“At least you’re honest. I respect that.” Ryse nodded to him. She’d rather have blunt honesty to her face than poisonous words spoken behind her back, or hiding behind a fake smile.
“I think that discovering the past is just as important as forging the future. We won’t be able to learn from other’ mistakes if we don’t study them. At least, in my opinion anyways.” What was the point of researching ancient civilizations if nothing was learned from them? She was sure the architecture of several cities around Mistere still held remnants of the people that used to live there countless years ago. Old concepts were built on and improved, and culture evolved and changed. It it wasn’t for the past then there wouldn’t be a future to look ahead to.
At the other student’s query, she gave a sigh. “Maybe...” She replied. “I’m not too sure about it yet. I know that some phoenixes stay up at night, but I’m not one of them. I usually go straight to sleep when the sun goes down.” She was referring to the moon phoenixes; those that followed the moon god’s whispers instead of following the word of Vissarion and the Bask Council. If it wasn’t her church grim heritage making her stay up then she had no idea what could be causing it. She was a loyal follower of Vissarion, she wasn’t turning into a moon phoenix. Her mother would surely give her a butt whooping if she did. Not to mention the terrifying thought of the Null Lantern. Having her soul sucked out was horrifying to think about. No.... it definitely wasn’t that. Her other half was the best guess she’d had so far.

The Vamp Wolf | “I don’t have much of an appreciation for liars. In lieu of that, it wouldn’t be right of me to be one myself.” He’d snort faintly. While he could handle the more harmless white lies if there was a good enough motive behind them, generally speaking, he had a distaste for fakers. Especially those who hid things and played pretend while also expecting others to think well of them for it by default. If you have to be a liar, at least accept that you’re kind of being a piece of shit by doing so.
“Mistakes…?” He’d frown down at his book briefly. “Don’t we already have answers to most of the mistakes people typically commit? We can look back and see how a war or any other bad decision tends to go wrong based on past happenings, but that’s already common sense these days, is it not? And to be honest, I would say that the trend is that the people who could use the knowledge the most are the ones who are unwilling to listen to it anyway.” Most of what they had now was naturally already a lot better than what could be found by examining the past. Given that they knew how to work with the more advanced stuff, it was unlikely they’d be so stumped by the occasional remains of the old times that they just would not be able to understand without further research into the civilizations that created it. Technically, they have already improved on those currently forgotten concepts once before in the past before they were lost to time. That was how they eventually got here, right…? Did they truly need to rediscover them again…? Well, that was probably a rather subjective question to answer…
When she spoke about not being sure what caused her wakefulness, he’d give her a bit of a confused look at first. In all fairness, he wasn’t able to tell how old she was just based on her looks, but wasn’t it strange for someone who he doubted was a little kid still to not know how their own species influenced them? “You…don’t know? How’s that happen? I would have thought figuring out how being what you are affects your life is one of the first things a person would want to be sure of. Especially so for one who’s a mix.” It could be dangerous to be unaware, depending on what species you happened to be. |

She laughed quietly as she heard Sharaku's statement. She knew very well that nobody else was in the library with them, but she still felt the need to be quiet nonetheless out of politeness. "Well, you're not wrong." She agreed with him. She hadn't really thought of that before; the people needing the information being those that don't listen to it anyways. It was a funny realization to think about.
At his later question, however, her smile faded. Replaced by a more nervous one. "I was raised as a phoenix." She explained hesitantly, the hand holding her pencil tightening its grip on it before loosening again. "My mom never told me anything about my other half, and um... I was home-schooled when I was younger. We don't really have anything like what the school has here."
Her homeland of Hisakawa was known for keeping the traditional ways alive. Even though the capital and the main five cities in the nation were wealthy due to their interest in industrialism, the smaller cities and towns were not so. The farther away you lived from these cities, the poorer you were. Clans and tribes were common. Ryse herself lived with her mother in a wooden cabin near a small town at the southeast side of the Wakeru river. It was a humble home that didn't have electricity. They did most things by hand; including washing clothes, hunting, and growing their own vegetables. The things they couldn't get themselves they bought at the town with the money earned from wooden carvings and furniture her mom made. It wasn't much, but it was enough to buy the necessities when they needed it. All in all it was a quiet life, without many of the things that could be found here in Mistere. Owning a phone, which she bought recently with the shards she'd earned, was new for her. She'd known of such technology of course, but she hadn't been able to own one before now. Being able to contact someone on the other side of the country without waiting several weeks for letters to arrive was much more convenient.
"I've always had my sense of smell and hearing, but staying awake at night only began happening a few days ago. That's... kind of why I'm here tonight."
For years she'd rejected what she was. The bullies and threats from other phoenixes over the years had caused it. Since she grew old enough to understand just what she was she'd wanted to know just how she was created; Church Grim were created, they weren't born. For years her mother had refused to tell her. The truth of the matter - as she recently found out - had turned out to be much more complicated than she first thought. But now that she actually knew the truth, with the help of a snarky Atronach, she'd learned to accept her church grim side. She wondered if finally accepting it instead of outright rejecting it had awakened something. She had to know. Which was why she had a book about church grim lying on the table.
