welcome to Eldritch Academy
In a world of myths and mysteries, the pinnacle of the magical academies exists. Eldritch Academy offers education to all ages and species but specializes in the study and training of one's innate mystical capabilities, often called Eldritch Energies, Powers, or Unknowns, but more formally known as their Talent. However, tensions run high with the nations only holding a fragile peace as the Talents that rival the epitomes of technology change the balance of power.
With the more recent uprising of evil Shades and introduction of combat-oriented programs into Talent-focused schools, nations grow more aggressive towards one another. The demand for resources grows, and skirmishes at the border of Arka and Mistere become more frequent. Monsters run into the nations from the Wildes, terrorizing villages and cities. The need for trained or in-training Hunters and Guardians has never been more urgent.

The Yu Fu, an all female species formed by an ancient union between the selkie and the mermaids. Their siren voices and beauty come from their mermaidian heritage, however the thing that separates them from their ancestors is the inheritance of the selkie's ability to simply remove their seal skin in order to enter land. In the case of the Yu Fu, they can remove their tails to reveal a pair of human legs while their tails turn into a strong silk towel. Tales of humans meeting beautiful women on beaches and only for them to disappearance in the blink of an eye with the sound of splashing waves were stories of men who met the Yu Fu before knowledge of their kind became a documented and relatively well known thing through the world. Originally hailing along the coasts of Hisakawa, some even living in the great river, the Yu Fu have moved down, taking their lives to Mystere, where soon they integrated and became part of the society. Water channels were soon built thanks to efforts by the Yu Fu to allow themselves other aquatic species to swim through the city. Technological advancements only made the implementation faster and more efficient. One of the Yu Fu is swimming towards Mystere's prestigious academy, a school that has teachers and students from all walks, swims, flies and digs of life learn to brighten minds and get their minds brightened.
Merlissa makes her way into the school, enchanted water picking her up and allowing her to traverse the school with ease. Students would wave to her, and she would wave back, as the mermaidian teacher makes her way towards her office. As the waters moved her through the academy, she goes through a small waterfall before ending up in a pool, large enough for the maiden to swim around in. Letting water cascade down her blue locks, sparkling like the pearls thay adorned her figure and shining like the golden bangles that were worn on her wrists. Beautiful as it was, it was still a lot of hair to dry off. Quickly leaving the pool and hoping onto a mat to dry herself off, she removes her tail and dries herself off with a towel hung upon a man shapes coat hanger. Reaching into a pouch that she brought along, she pulled up a hand, and then an arm, followed by the shoulder and head and finally a whole human person, well human if it was not for the large ram horns. With the promise of lunch after, Merlissa gets herself ready for the open lecture.
The lecture hall were this open lecture would take place was notably different. It had a tall ceiling and a distinct smell of the ocean. The splashing and sloshing of water could be heard yet no visible water could be seen. Multiple screens lined the wall where the students would face, and the lecturer's stage is notably empty of a lectern or podium. The front seats have also disappeared, forcing anyone entering to take the seats from the middle upwards. As students begin to walk in, whether curious, passionate or bored, golems appeared to usher students away from the lecturer's stage and towards the towering line of seats. It was as if entering a special theatre than a lecture hall.
Quietly the lights turn off, special stage lights point towards the stage, glass panes rising up and forming a cage around the stage, turning it into a sort of tank like exhibit. The screens shift aside, maintaining an angle to allow students higher up to few the spectacle as pristine water rushes from an opening, a cascading fall of blue sparkling like gems crashes down into the tank, filling it up with a decent pace. The screens turn on to focus on a figure water out the opening, lights shine their rays to a beautiful woman, with blue hair and fair skin. Pearls decorates her wonderful body as golden bangles chimed as she walked, unaffected by the water rushing downwards, the level as high as her ankles. A shimmering silk cloth, as if made of the most beautiful of scales, was wrapped like a beach towel around her waist.
"Good morning all! And welcome to my open lecture! I hope this entry was appealing to you all!" There was no visible microphone on herself, yet the voice of Merlissa was clear and crisp. "A few house rules! Firstly, we have people of all ages here, so please watch your language while the younger ones are here. It is a bit too early for them to learn the more adult ways of speech. Secondly, do respect each other, I do not wish to find a quarrel amongst you all, I hate to bother the school nurse. Lastly, I wish to have your eyes and ears, any questions can easily reach me via my wonderful golems stationed by your seats." Merlissa reaches the edge of the drop, the tank nearly full and the waterfall beginning to thin. The Yu Fu had to do this quick.
"I believe my rules are understood! So let us!" Merlissa dives into the water, to the shock and awe of some of the students among her crowd. A shining blue light appears and slowly breaks from the surface, a mermaid with blue glittering scales emerges. A golem as large as an orc suddenly breaches the water and catches Merlissa gently in its massive palm, acting like a seat for the Yu Fu. "Begin!"

This place sure smelled like the coasts of Hisakawa… Wani had yet to visit the beaches of Minstere, too, so he first related this smell to his home country. Despite the smell, he had yet to see the source - from where he stood and the time that he entered the hall, no signs of saltwater were seen. He could definitely hear splashing in the distance… maybe it was tucked away for later? Maybe this was some kind of marine lecture? Yeah, about that, he pulled up his sheet and rechecked the lecture held in this hall once more. “By Ms. Merlissa… a Yu Fu, huh?” he murmured to himself. They were natives of Hisakawa too, so he knew his fair share of them from spotting them swimming across the great river and through the channels in Minstere and near the academy. Today, one of such would be his teacher.
A lot of spectacles transformed the lecture hall into… an aquarium? Inside this school? Wani was up for a trip of a school year, wasn’t he? "Good morning all! And welcome to my open lecture! I hope this entry was appealing to you all!" the lecturer welcomed them. “I-It sure was…” he mumbled under his breath as he quickly found a seat. After hearing the rules about watching his language, respect and eyes and ears towards the beautiful aqua lady who was in her right element, he kind of wondered what her next topic was about. Last time he checked, she was associated with Species/Magical Beasts classes, so he’d likely learn more about them here. As a feeble human such as himself, knowing who you share this earth with might’ve been preferable.

I am young, don't know 'bout love...
we are wild, can't get enough~
Quinn had just left her homeroom class with Mr Dumas and was heading for her first lecture of the day. Species and Magical Beasts studies was surely going to be an interest subject at hand, being a full bred member of the Panthera tribe meant that Quinn was relatively well-versed in the different types of species out there. However family's ideology was that in order to liase with different species one had to understand them on a social and intellectual level. Learning enough of their customs so as to not offend and get them on side. Quinn had only been really interested in hearing about something other than Panthera's, sure it was interesting to learn about her own culture but sometimes they just went on and on about it for like ever.
She made her way into the class, glancing briefly over at the stage set up. She then glanced over to the seat, noticing the first row was missing. Interesting... She thought, this clear meant something, but what to expect she wasn't exactly sure of. Still she had seen an awful lot already, she doubted there was much than could shock her. She headed over to the centre of the seating area. Popping herself down, she flicked her hair over her shoulder. Lifting off her shoulder bag she unzipped it and reached it. Slowly taking out and placing various items on the desk in front of her, a notebook, a pencil case filled with stationary and the like. Anything that she would consider useful for the class, laid out in a neat and organised fashion. Quinn had to do well if she was going to stay here, well-enough to satisfy her parents at least. Then she was free to have an much fun as she wanted.
Quinn wriggled her nose, her strong senses picking up the smell of salt water in the air, and a unique sloshing sound coming from no where in particular. She watched with intrigued as the teacher began her entrance, it was theatrical and embracing. Undoubtedly a method for her to engage her students attention during their first lesson. As Ms. Lo Mika threw herself into the water and transformed into a mermaid, Quinn couldn't help but notice her large tail. It was nice and meaty, it was a good thing Quinn had eaten a hearty breakfast this morning, or she would be salivating right now.

Compared to other students, unknowingly the young clean cut teenager was at an incredible disadvantage in terms of a species class. However, since she was unaware of the 'disadvantage' caused by her pendant the human student had eagerly signed up for and arrived on time for the class, already in her seat as most of the other students filed in. "Good Morning Teacher." she greeted back when the teacher had said the same to them only regarding students, easily understanding the rules of the class especially about language as she was one of those younger students only recently having entered her teenage years. Briefly as she opened her nook book to a fresh page which had already been titled for the first day of the class, she glanced to the sides in order to see the other two students seated nearby one of her class peers? She was already familiar with the other girl not so much , but that was alright, they'd get to know in class eventually.

Merlissa was happy with the response she was getting, most of the students seem rather lively or paying attention to her. However as much as the Yu Fu would love to entertain the lecture hall audience with more wonders, she was here as a teacher, and it was her job to teach them. However thanks to the school's more open curriculum, it was easy to fit whatever topics she liked inside. Smiling, she pats the golem that held her up and it moved her closer to the seats, the screens allowing students to view her better if she was too far away for them to see.
"It is wonderful for you all to come today! Do not worry about attendance and such, I have golems doing that task for you! Not only that should there be any questions you wish to voice during the lecture, they will notify me!" Merlissa spoke as the golems among the stands waved their hands. With that out of the way, Merlissa proceeded on with the lesson with a bit of introduction.
"Welcome to Species and Magical Beasts studies! This study will guide you through the species that live in our lovely country! It is knowledge that helps prevent strife, so understanding how different everyone is will always be the first step towards respect," Merlissa stated, the golem moving her towards what seems like a laptop and she presses a key on it, the screen switching to a dual screen, showcasing her and presentation slides. In big bold text, was the title of said the topic, 'The Yu Fu'.
"Today's subject is the easiest to find. One of them is right before you right now! The Yu Fu span throughout Mystere though they favor the coastal regions of the country," Merlissa begun, the slide switching towards a picture of Merlissa herself and a country map of Mystere, as well as Hisakawa. "However the Yu Fu's originated from Hisakawa, in a time much before the monarchy. The Yu Fu have moved down towards Mystere, but do expect to see my kind up there too,"
The slide switches toward two pictures of separate species and one picture of Merlissa right below both. The picture on the left was a picture of a mermaid, with shimmering green scales and a rather proud look on her face. The one on the right is a picture of a Selkie, with seal skin wrapped around her body like winter clothes, though to the less knowledgable the selkie would simply look like a woman with seal skin winter clothes.
"The Yu Fu are born from a union between of Mermaids, another common species in Mystere and the Selkie, a more shy but friendly species found in colder regions. We are not half-breeds however, as the Yu Fu have long since became an independent species throughout time," Merlissa's eyes gaze upon the audience, and her eyes fell upon a Panthera. An interesting feline species in Merlissa's opinion, and great people to talk about fish with. "You there darling! Would you please mind telling me anything you happened to know about either the Mermaid or Selkie, and please everyone, if you have something to chime in along with our young Panthera over there, raise your hand and a golem will come to you. And young ones, feel free to also raise your hands and answer along, I would love to see if the younger of our generation know somethings about the world around them."

How these golems coordinated their work like this was beyond Wani’s fathomability. Did they talk telepathically? Maybe, maybe not- oh wait, right, he was actually in the middle of a class, so he should put his focus in the lecture right now. He had brought forth his notebook and pencil - ready to take notes during Ms. Merlissa’s presentation. He had to work on his powers if he wanted to control the coal releasing from the tip of his pencil that made up the ‘text’ that he wrote on the papers - imagine writing without moving a finger? That would be delightful.
So the Yu Fu were actually a result of interspecies reproducing together… there lied a famous love story in that, didn’t there? One of those dramas about a couple between races that overcome the norms and prejudices of society for the sake of their undying love… he almost shed a tear through the blunt, laid-back smile of his that he always held up. Anyway, he remembered to write that down, because it sounded fundamental - some species were results of other species, while others were results of other things. If he had to excel in this, he’d need a good understanding of the circumstances of each species’ origin and relativity to their conditions today.
Despite hailing from Hisakawa, Wani didn’t have any close relations to any Yu Fu. He didn’t have any childhood friend there or anything, so things were going to change this year. Now that he got to look around, he also spotted a very familiar face - you’d think he meant Lavender, the girl that he was familiar with from the track field, but noooooooo - he kind of spotted a social superstar. Quinn attended this school too? This year was going to be even more exciting than he thought.
It was convenient that he sat close to a golem as he did have a question in mind - hailing from mermaids, did that mean that it was true about their singing voices? Could Ms. Merlissa sing too? Was it true at all, the fact that mermaids used their beautiful voices to lure men deep into the sea and disappear? He’d raise his hand and await a golem to come and deliver his question: “I remember that mermaids were able to lure people away with enchanted songs… can you do that too?”

I am young, don't know 'bout love...

The teacher went on to explain the subject at hand, nothing Quinn didn't already expect. Still it was bound to be one of the less dull and draining topics to sit in on, as a member of a proficient species it was important to learn and understand the fundamentals of others species. They were now living in a much more multi-diverse world these days, inter-species mingling was common these days. She blinked, shooing away these thoughts, these were much too like the kinds of thoughts he parents had instilled in her, political and analytic. She wasn't here to over-assess and review, really she wanted to move away from that, to mingle and have fun.
The teacher brought the topic along to their first subject, a reference to her own species, understandable considering the entrance she had just made. She directly a question at Quinn, asking her watch she knew of Mermaids or Selkie. She thought back to her previous studies and lowered her pen. Offering her teacher a dazzling smile before speaking, "As far as I'm aware Ms Lo Mika, a Mermaid is the female form of the species known as Merfolk, opposite to merman. Recognised as a creature with the upper body that resembles a human and the lower body of an aquatic lifeform, usually some species of fish." As she spoke she gestured towards Ms Lo Mika's tail, "Selkies are similar to Merfolk but from what I think...are connected to the mammal referred to as... a seal?" She said a little uncertain of the last fact, this didn't faze her however, she wasn't expected to know everything on a species so vastly different to her own. She paused to allow the teacher to respond, glancing over as a boy in the glance continued to mention something about singing. She smiled at him, before looking back at her teacher, curious to discover her answer.

Ah yes this was a beautiful class. A truly amazing spectacle for all to see... If they were awake to see this actually going on. But of course, when was Felis ever awake to do anything? The life of a cat was truly a hard one. It was tough, all that sleeping, eating, and more sleeping. Which is why the feline tended to fall asleep in the most obscure places. In this instance? He had fallen asleep is Merlissa's class without even noticing. Well, actually he did notice. But did he care? No, not really. This whole academy was his sleeping ground anyway, if they consented or not. After all he was just sleeping, not like he was doing anything wrong. It was just that... He could maybe be a little bit loud sometimes. While awake? Of course. But even when asleep the cat had a way of announcing his presence. The tom, even during the loud sounds of the Yu Fu's lecture, did not wake from his nap. Actually, it might have even been why his snoring gradually grew and grew louder until it rivaled that of the microphone. The feline smacked his lips while he was currently seated on one of the many seats of the class, curled up into a tight ball of white fluff. Wanting to be a bit more comfortable Felis kneaded his paws into the cushion, flexing his claws before tucking his head more into the seat, a big goofy grin on his maw as the loud snoring continued.
Surely, in this state, not even an earthquake could wake the teacher.

Merlissa was happy to hear a simple yet clear answer that showed a basic understanding for the merfolk. Another golem brings to her attention an additional part of the merfolk she had been expecting to hear, their singing. Looking around to see no further input, she smiled and clapped with joy.
"Already I sense promise! What young miss..." Merlissa looks down and pats the golem gently, and through some method the golem was able to tell Merlissa what she needed. Looking back up towards the class after her brief pause, she continues. "Quinn, Miss Quinn has answered is excellent for the basics. The Mermaids are simply female merfolk, easily distinguishable for their beauty and their fish tails instead of human legs. There are other things, such as the merfolk's preference for salt water as their suitable home. The answer on the Selkie may not sound impressive, but for this class I say she might be a future professor on the subject."
Merlissa clicks the laptop and a new slide appears with brief information on the Selkie and the Mermaid.
"Now class! To help fill in the gaps. Mermaids are usually fish. There are crustaceans and other forms of aquatic life but they are incredibly rare. As someone mentioned, mermaids are known for their voices as well as their looks. I will however cover it later," Merlissa directs the attention towards the lady dressed in seal skin. "Many may see this lady here as just a lady wearing seal skin. And they are not entirely wrong, yet not right either. When it comes to the Selkie, they are female seals with the ability to remove their seal bodies as skin, and become full humans. To compare, Mermaids are half human half fish, while Selkie are inherently seals with a special form of shapeshifting."
Merlissa then moves onto the next slide, which features a picture of Merlissa with a bunch of arrows pointing at her body with labels attached. However before she continues, she spies a cat sleeping among the stands.
"Hm looks like I got more than just a student in the class. Golems do take our sleeping cat out... Wait no. Lift him to a student, preferably one who can handle him," Merlissa went into a slight smirk, watching her golems approach the cat from all sides like a clay wall. With her attention back to the class, she clears her throat.
"Now with the Yu Fu, we do possess traits that our ancestors have, such as beautiful looks and being all female. As for how there are baby Yu Fu, it is a secret kept only among the married Yu Fu, so even I don't know!" Merlissa laughed a bit, though announcing to the class she is single still may had been a tad bit embarrassing for the Yu Fu lecturer. "Regardless of what I just said, I love teaching by filling in what students do not know. After all the ultimate goal of a teacher is to ultimately have the student learn something and grow, even if the student is not as amazing as their peers. So using your brief knowledge of Mermaids and Selkie, and perhaps my entry, derive possible traits that had been passed down onto my species. I expect about... two. Two traits that can be guessed." Merlissa smiled, waiting for hopefully an answer.

Wani continued to take notes as he heard Quinn’s own input to the class. There was a Merfolk, which was probably the greater group of mer-people such as mermaids, mermen and mer-creatures and whatsoever. What distinguished them from other species was the upper body of a human and the lower body of an aquatic lifeform… did that mean that it didn’t always have to be a fish-person? It could likely be a human with the lower body of… say, a jellyfish? Octopus? Whale?
Selkies were a little different from Merfolk, although Quinn pointed it out that they had their similarities in the end. What set them apart was the… seal skin. Yes, they had seal skin, and seals were kind of aquatic lifeforms as well, although they bred on land. He began writing it down, not really minding the golems approaching a small area nearby. They were probably directed by Ms. Merlissa’s orders.
… How did the Yu Fu make babies, though? That felt like a very interesting topic- no, no, not like that, he was just curious. If they were all female as stated by a Yu Fu herself, then… how?
Now, for the traits… he started by thinking about the seal skin from earlier. The female Selkies were able to ‘shed’ their seal skins and transform into humans. Meanwhile, Mermaids were half humans, half aquatic beings 24/7… that must’ve meant that Ms. Merlissa had some kind of transformation ability herself. It felt reasonable that she might’ve inherited that.
Although… the pool in the room disapproved of that.
Either way, he wrote it down as a possible trait - she could always correct him - and began to think… he was the one who came up with the singing voice idea, and it was said that Mermaids were generally very beautiful… between those two traits, he leant towards the beauty of Mermaids as a possible trait and wrote that down instead.
