welcome to Eldritch Academy
In a world of myths and mysteries, the pinnacle of the magical academies exists. Eldritch Academy offers education to all ages and species but specializes in the study and training of one's innate mystical capabilities, often called Eldritch Energies, Powers, or Unknowns, but more formally known as their Talent. However, tensions run high with the nations only holding a fragile peace as the Talents that rival the epitomes of technology change the balance of power.
With the more recent uprising of evil Shades and introduction of combat-oriented programs into Talent-focused schools, nations grow more aggressive towards one another. The demand for resources grows, and skirmishes at the border of Arka and Mistere become more frequent. Monsters run into the nations from the Wildes, terrorizing villages and cities. The need for trained or in-training Hunters and Guardians has never been more urgent.

Late afternoon the scents of the previous nights rain had been swallowed up by the rich autumns earthy aroma. With sleeves rolled up to his elbows and neatly folded back the man felt quite at homed, his human form being much more adept to the precious care of saplings and sprouts, giving them life energy and love needed to blossom and bloom into wonderful little creations that would spread happiness light and joy. It might have been closer to winter than it was to summer yet the man was still only clad in thin cotton, shorts reaching no lower than his knee the light clothing made sense due to the location. Heated up from the light of the sun not a single droplet of heat escaped the building, its atmosphere was much like that of a thick jungle, rich in moisture and heavy the air settled around as a thick quilt. The greenhouse was his space thankfully, for the Academy had granted him use of the public greenhouse but also this one, it was smaller, on the edge of the property and a slight walk from the main area of teaching yet there was no large signage towards it, just a slight path stepped by many professors and researchers before him. All of whom seeked to unlocked the knowledge that plants held and now it was his turn, this greenhouse was his to mould and create life in, he could choose the temperature on the thermostat.
A low flower bed before him as the glass walls rose up high above his head, part of a second balcony like floor letting vines and hanging plants grow their tendrils down in hopes of snaring any unsuspecting prey in their whispy grasp. With each seed in bedded into the soil in front of him the male spoke a few brief words, a language native to his species as it encouraged the plants to take root, to settle into their new home and grow strong. The weak ones would die out, but that was just natural selection, the strong would live on, they would spread their pollen more and influence the gene pool more. This species would grow. They were cute, little clover like leaves surrounding tiny white flower clusters. Yet a sound brought him out of the rythmatic lull he had worked into. "Greetings?" Surveying the area his eyes flickered across the area, he couldn't see anyone yet the door had been opened, and swiftly closed. For the sound of it and the minor flow of air from the outside had alerted him. IF they didn't come forward he would have to connect to the hive mind, yet there was no use in wasting energy.

The greenhouse was warm and inviting to the chilled tanuki. Despite having some food on her belly, the raccoon dog was still physically weak and exhausted. For someone who had not slept in three years, contrary to popular belief, she was in fact tired. The courtyard had proven to be far too loud and busy for her tastes. Thus, the bakedanuki snooped around until she found the prime place to snooze. Curling up underneath a plant with giant leaves, the canine buried her nose into her silver-furred, muddled, and tangled tail. She had yet to have a good session of grooming herself, having been far too frail to bother trying. Hopefully some time in the greenhouse would give her enough time for some rem rebound to make up for the last three years of what could barely be called sleep.
She really did hate the situation she was in. From what she could find, this world offered no way to get back home or to any other world. All around her were unfamiliar faces and she was left in the dark about what had become of her family. Sleeping was the only real way to escape the horrible stretch of emotions and regrets that had built up in the tanuki over the years. Hopefully here she would be left undisturbed and finally able to rest. Or would she? Movement stirred within the quiet greenhouse as a masculine voice called out a questioning greeting. He likely knew someone was in there with him, but she was not about to speak up and reply. If she had her way, he would stop searching and let her sleep.

There was silence, no voice calling back, the slight burbles of an artificial river and the mechanical whirl of the machines which kept the greenhouse at such a temperature were the only sounds which graced his ears. Yet he had heard it, the door had quite certainly been nudged open then swung closed, a slight sigh escaped him as the male left his gloves by the plant he was working on, it would be so much easier if whoever had entered had just come over, besides as long as they weren't damaging anything and stayed out of his personal items he would likely let a mature responsible student come into the quiet space. A slight stretch brought his arms above his head as he stood, breath released as a wave of relaxation flooded through the kirin, it took a little more concentration to connect to the hive whilst in shapeshifted into a human. Yet it was the fastest way to get this over with. Pheromones and messages flooded his mind, the plants in the building flooding him with messages and information to make up for the time that he had been away each one of them hanging on for a word or command, a direction from the host. So where was this sly intruder?
Its wide leaves provided a nice canopy, yet the plant had been disturbed as a canine creature had slunk under its leaves, curling up to rest on top of the soil where its roots hid under the plant whispered to him, annoyed by the breach of personal space without a proper introduction or sniff. Long strides took him through the pathways towards the plant in question, and the creature too, a few meters away he stopped, crouching slightly hands loosely linked as fro a moment he only offered silence. "Would you mind coming out of there? That plants a little sensitive and it feels like its privacy has been breached. I would also quite like to know just whom has wandered into my greenhouse?"He was not fully educated on this species, the dimensions and appearance the plants had given him, and the silvery fur he could see through gaps in the leaves indicated that it was canine. Yet not fox, wolf or dog.

The bakedanuki had just begun to doze when her hiding place was discovered. She did not completely know how, unless the one with the masculine voice was some sort of creature who was not human as he appeared. It was strange though; his voice certainly was familiar, but after the long years, Izayuki could hardly place it. At the very least, the familiar voice was enough to stir her from the first stages of sleep and pull her back into full awareness of what was around her. Huffing, the raccoon dog gazed up through the large leaves at the dark-haired and blue eyed man. He asked if she would mind leaving her napping spot with the reason being that it bothered the plant.
Seriously, how petty were the plants here, to not be able to put up with a small animal sleeping near them for a brief period of time? They already lived a life of comfort and luxury, not having to worry about bad weather, frost, or being destroyed or trampled. Izayuki had met many plants in her day and spoken with them, and while most were generally quite petty, this was taking it to a new level. Uncurling her tail slightly, the bakedanuki flicked a leaf of the plant gently with the muddled fur on her tail tip. She addressed the man, while half addressing the plant as well. “I’m sorry, I just assumed this plant could tolerate a harmless animal sleeping under it for a few hours. It’s not like I’m about to trample or hurt it,” she spoke with a slightly annoyed growl. She really did not enjoy being woken up from almost falling asleep. Curling her tail back up to her body and pressing into it for warmth, the tiny silver-furred canine concluded softly. “You can tell it to suck it up and deal with it. I’ll be out of here shortly. As for who I am, wait long enough and I'll tell you after I'm rested.”

The personality on her was shown to be less than pleasant, yet the longer he looked the more he realised that she looked weary. Tired and frail, fur full of dirt and thick with muck she had likely not had the chance to clean herself for a while. The plant which he was linked with grumbled slightly, its displeasure at being dragged out of the relaxing lullaby of life after being flicked by her tail had taken its toll. The complaining started until through the hive mind he simply told it to quieten. Thankfully the plants settled, seeming to be happy with watching the exchange between two beasts. The snarky tone seemed a little familiar but he brushed it off, having met many from all lands it was a fairly common feeling. A harmless animal sleeping under it, well she had declared herself as harmless, announcing that she meant no ill will against the flora here. Yet he didn't like the tone, a growl curled up from the canine as she curled back up. Pronouncing that he would simply have to accept what was happening.
The plants were having none of it.
He was sighing a lot today, another let his shoulders droop as he moved forward, swift as ever he moved forward, naturally his aspect for speed was high so in a fluid motion he gently brushed the leaves away to reveal the creature curled up. His arms moved in an attempt to pick the bakedanuki up. They would curl under the creature if it worked, bare forearms exposed to her fur. Yet she was not quite what she seemed, he had sensed little evil coming from her. No more than the average creature in this city yet a moment after contact his skin started to burn. With a yelp he would release her, leaping back from shock as his shapeshifting was released, antlers nearly shattering the glass of the greenhouses roof. his height not restrained as the pain surged up his front legs. Searching eyes scoured down from where his head was held, past the second story balcony down to the ground floor below. The first few layers of skin had been burnt off, the fur on his front legs singed away and the holy fire wreathing his body had vanished from that spot.

Before Izayuki could properly react, the leaves shading over her napping spot had been moved and arms curled under her. The man was trying to pick her up to forcibly move her, wasn’t he? The bakedanuki released an unhappy, angered tanuki whine mixed with a displeased growl. She began to flail her tiny legs and paws and attempted to bed her head forward to bite the hands that had tried to lift her. However, the youkai never did get the chance, the dark-haired man suddenly shapeshifting into a much larger, beastly form with a yelp. Pleased at the action that resulted in her being freed from his grasp, the silver-furred raccoon dog looked away before shooting an angered but curious glare at the man who had changed and grown into a large beast that almost shattered the greenhouse’s glass ceiling.
A kirin. She had only seen them from afar and had read plenty about their kind; what was one doing here, disguised as a human and around so many diverse species in a city? Typically, she thought of kirins as loners who lived away from urban areas, preferring solitude in untouched reaches of nature. In the split second she had to wonder this, the bakedanuki felt a burning pain deep within her own body after having made contact with the holy creature. In the past, she had not a single problem with coming into contact with holy beings, despite her dislike of most of them. However, in this instance it was the reaction of something deep inside of her. After three years of imprisonment, the three hell demons did not so easily die off or remain dormant. Upon touching the energy of the holy beast, they instantly reacted, displeased with the kirin’s contact with their host.
The small tanuki gritted her teeth, attempting to mentally overcome the pain for a few seconds before she gazed back up at the kirin. She could not help but feel a little bad for having caused him the pain, even if he had been the one who begged for it by trying to pick her up. Natural consequences, really, only she wished they had not been so severe. “Really now, that was foolish,” Izayuki said, gazing up at the kirin, now on all four of her silver paws. “What is a kirin like you doing here anyways? You should know better than to touch something that could hurt you,” she admonished, partly worried for the creature which she held some regard for, as kirins were generally graceful and respectable beasts, and partially annoyed at what he had done and the silly choice he had made.

Yet the tanuki seemed to have been affected as well, from her disgruntled look it was likely that she had also been in pain from it. Shapeshifting into a human didn't change what he was, and something within the woman before him had clashed so violently with the holy force inside him that it had left him burned, the fire which normally sheathed his body had been corroded away. As many of his kind did Lester avoided many demonic species, those who held darkness and evil within them were normally obvious to spot, in both physical appearance and spiritual. Yet as far as he could tell this was just a normal canine, it was slightly worrying. Yet he overcame the pain, honeysuckle growing from the garden its tendrils crawling up his leg, flowers blooming as the skin started to healed over. His mind slowed down, approaching the normal speed of thinking as he calmed himself, the bulk of the pain washed away.
It was foolish indeed, yet it was something he would have to remember for the future. As the tailed creature stood up he calmed his mind, height slowly shrinking down until his back stood a little over 4 foot. "You know my species." More of a statement than anything there was a hint of surprise tinging his voice, not many out of Hisakawa knew of his kind, unless they were scholars or the like. Yes he really should know better, yet it came as a shock to him that his body had reacted that way whilst touching this odd, dog fox silver thing. "I work here, as a professor. Whilst I do know not to touch things which hurt I did not expect to get that reaction whilst touching you." It led to another question, yet he took the moment to sit down, after all the female before him was rather small, even after he had shrunk down. "May I ask what you are? I did not feel any darkness coming from you, hence the surprise. Perhaps she could shed light, there were many a species walking this land, many of which he was greatly unfamiliar with.

The bakedanuki only nodded as the surprised comment left his mouth. Of course she knew his species. Kirin were often closely related to youkai and the canine found it easy to spot members of her own kind. The beast shrunk down to a smaller size, but the tanuki still found herself staring straight up in order to make eye contact. She was smaller than the average raccoon dog, after all. Still unhappy from being interrupted from her napping time, the canine laid back down, lazily staring at his hooves while not bothering to look back up and meet his eyes. She was mildly surprised that the holy creature did not know what she was. Of all the yokai in the worlds, bakedanuki were not necessarily uncommon. Then again, given her odd appearance for one along with the kirin being a seemingly inexperienced and rather foolish one of his kind, perhaps it was not all that shocking.
“I’m a tanuki yokai,” she hummed softly, resting her silver-furred muzzle on her soft forepaws. The quivering demons within had slowed, but their movements still sent a few coughs up the throat of the tired bakedanuki. “All you need to know is I came into contact with some demonic beings and I’ve been plagued by them ever since. That’s probably why you got hurt when you made contact with me,” she stated, not wanting to go into too much detail with a complete stranger as to what happened so long ago. If the school was strictly against demonic or evil beings, she could end up in trouble and attacked for harboring them within her. It would be a shame, seeing as the school grounds were fairly peaceful for the most part and a good place to catch up on much needed sleep.

A tanuki, a raccoon dog. It made sense with the body shape yet the colouration was a little off. Yet the small creature simply curled back up, letting her eyes rest on his hooves. She seemed tired, a cough racked her body as she settled down, her explanation shedding light onto the situation as she depicted a history of how the darkness came to reside within her. Plagued by a darkness, the demonic beings when she once met still haunted her, which had caused the duo to have adverse reactions upon contact. "I see, that does make sense." He mused over his choices for a moment, she seemed to be tired, not having the energy to stand, and the couch from earlier hardly sounded good. This was one of the warmer places on the premises, and most certainly one of the quiet warm places, it would be good for someone to rest here, although he was not about to turn it into a hotel of sorts! Was there any harm in letting her stay?
His connection to the hive mind strengthened as he urged one of the large leafed plants to grow down, its leaf settling on the ground no more than a meter from the tanuki yokai as it acted as a bowl, filling with water as the plant drained moisture from the ground it was earthed in and pooled it in the leaf. "You can stay here for to rest, although I would appreciate it if you did not make this your home." He would have to leave her in peace and return to work, a slight shimmer scread across him as skin ripped and he shifted back into the human form. Its arms still raw from the injury.
A half step back as he turned to leave, "I'll be back to work now. if you need me just call- my names Professor Sakuramori by the way." A moments hesitation as he realised that the bakedanuki was no student. "Sorry, Lester Anibal Sakuramori" He wouldn't leave just yet. She had water yet it would be rude to leave a conversation without confirmation that it was, indeed, over.

In tiredness, Izayuki had begun to doze off again while the kirin filled the leaf with water nearby. It was a kind gesture, but the bakedanuki was simply far too tired to even dare take a drink. However, the youkai was snapped out of the gentle lull of sleep when the professor introduced himself. Sakuramori… she knew that term. It was ever so familiar, and with that word came a large bundle of memories to be unraveled. Her head snapped up in mild surprise, rosy eyes widening as he continued to fully introduce himself.
Surely it had to be some sort of coincidence. She remembered the young boy who had that first name. Meeting someone who shared the name would not be too uncommon. The fact that his last name was that, however, made all the difference. She could bitterly remember the events of the time in the angered cherry blossom forest where the Lester she knew had been bled in order to appease the trees. Was this man in any way related to the plant mage or the forest she had once protected? Upon realizing her visible shock, the bakedanuki stared back down at her paws and sighed. “I’m sorry for the surprise-- I just knew somebody who shared your name, who I met in a blossom forest called Sakuramori,” she said glumly, resting the bottom of her muzzle on her silver-furred foreleg, rosy eyes gazing back up at the man’s face. “A silly story, right?” she continued, trying to play it off so she would not be perceived as too crazy, even though it was inevitably true.
“Name’s Izayuki. Just Izayuki,” she said, having decided to abandon her last names. They were like ropes only tied to one end of something, useless. She had no need for the title, for the proof of a loving bond long gone, for evidence of a family. In this world, she had no one.

She seemed to be, unsettled, shocked almost it was a few moments before the bakedanuki seemed to take a hold of herself again. Unnecessarily she apologized, the act was odd, after all she had done no wrong. Yet what confused him next lingered on in his mind, she knew someone who shared his name, Lester was reasonably common so there was no qualms there yet Sakuramori was a name shared by only a few close Kirin. A blossom forest, he hadn't heard of one named sakuramori in Mistere and to his knowledge Hisakawa also lacked anywhere with a forest by that name. Arka seemed an odd place for there to be a blossom forest, perhaps she was a traveler from far off? That just opened a whole new page of questions, how long had she been on the continent? Perhaps now was not the time for these questions, for a tinge of sadness hung in the air, was it true? "Well it's nice to meet you Ms Izayuki. I'll leave you to rest for now and return to my work." She would have to leave before he locked up for the night, of course no gardener would allow a stranger to sleep in their sacred place without supervision. With a slight smile he left simply, returning to the plant he had been tending to check and note down its progress. She had likely come from a far off land, the more he thought about it the more it made sense. Perhaps there would come a time when she would divulge the information she knew, there might be a shining gem among the soot stains.
----timeskip
Not a full moon the light streaming down could have been brighter, a slight cloud layer covering the nights sky blanketed out all but the brightest of celestial bodies. The loudest sound coming from a small hand basin close to his shed, it would be a cold night outside, the condensation was building and he could see the mist hanging over the school grounds outside. At this time he would love nothing more than to get home, curling up by the fire with a bowl of soup and perhaps some mulled wine. For a moment he was so lost in his longing for warmth and a quiet night of retiring into a soft bed that he forgot about the guest. "izayuki? Are you well rested its been about eight hours." what was the best way to wake an animal distressed and grumpy. Other than standing a few meters away and awkwardly calling her name.
