welcome to Eldritch Academy
In a world of myths and mysteries, the pinnacle of the magical academies exists. Eldritch Academy offers education to all ages and species but specializes in the study and training of one's innate mystical capabilities, often called Eldritch Energies, Powers, or Unknowns, but more formally known as their Talent. However, tensions run high with the nations only holding a fragile peace as the Talents that rival the epitomes of technology change the balance of power.
With the more recent uprising of evil Shades and introduction of combat-oriented programs into Talent-focused schools, nations grow more aggressive towards one another. The demand for resources grows, and skirmishes at the border of Arka and Mistere become more frequent. Monsters run into the nations from the Wildes, terrorizing villages and cities. The need for trained or in-training Hunters and Guardians has never been more urgent.

Not that he'd really admit it, but Theo had been nervous when he first took the job as an instructor for Eldritch Academy. Staying in one place for an extended period of time was one heck of a change. And while Nifflers traveled alone most of the time due to trust issues, once they put down roots, no matter how temporary, they didn't crave being alone 24/7. Trusting people was one thing, but being utterly solitary was mind-numbingly boring. The young man with the icy eyes and the shiny onyx hair had been a ball of anxiety thinking about being in such a place so long with not a soul to call his friend...not even a drinking buddy!
Imagine his relief when he found out he actually did know someone on campus. Lester Sakuramori, his sometimes rival. Many times had they crossed paths over the years, beating each other to places and items. It had almost been a game, one Theo looked forward to, yet dreaded should Lester beat him to some nice shiny object. A niffler hated to lose a treasure, but even that type of blow had been softened by their seedling of a friendship. It had been a while since they'd had a chance to catch up. The new instructor had been thrilled to receive an invitation from the proper gentleman to brunch in Mistere proper. Food and fun, that was his kind of day!
The cafe chosen was a quaint place, shelves filled with books and potted plants. The atmosphere was chill and hip, offering adult and teenager alike somewhere to relax and converse without too many distractions. Vines looped around exposed rafters in the ceiling, mixed with strings of lights. The entire storefront was windows for natural light, growing the plants and making it easy to read during the day. The scent of exotic coffees and teas wafted about, dotted with freshly chopped fruits, veggies, and baked goods. If he was not mistaken he smelled some fried foods as well, though the kitchen in the back was well secluded by heavy wooden doors. As Theo entered, he noted all of this quickly, then turned his gaze to find his brunch date's table. Upon approach, the track-suited man gave a smile and a wave. "Lester! Thanks for the invite. How ya been?"

A familiar face had been spotted, or rather he had seen it in the staffroom, a list of all of the teachers and faculty members with that little creature on it. They had an odd relationship, one he would prefer not to describe to his superiors for fear of being made a fool. They were a rival of sorts, of course not for his main job at the moment which was why he figured perhaps it was a chance to get to understand the odd fellow a little better. hence the invitation to a nice little cafe, it was one of those places that only the locals knew of, well of course it hadn't taken more than a few days to slide into his new shoes in Mistere and take up the role of a visiting professor here to teach for a few years.
This would be one of the times that they met without it being over some sort of artifact or treasure that they had both been hunting, at first it was amusing, yet at the second or third time of being beaten to something priceless and important it had become something of a drag to the kirin. How had this Theo Silversong known all of the sneaky places which artifacts were hidden and buried, the treasures and gems which no one else had discovered and this lone wolf had swept onto the scene. maybe there was something in it for him, a way to coerce this man into being on the same team, a friendship.
He of course had been on time, that was to say being there twenty three minutes before the actual meeting time. He was clothed from the 'casual' section of his wardrobe, that being said of course his casual was another mans formal. So just to loosen the feeling he rolled the sleeves of his shirt up, yet there was no way he was removing the tie or waistcoat. Not in public a tleast, that would be far too scandalous. Not to mention he did adore the colour combination which all matched with the headband, navy blue with a hint of gold, he had learned early on that whilst completing missions and goals did bring on a wave of euphoria there were little pleasures in life that were wonderful.
Well he had arrived, a familiar face, and clothes. Did he ever wash them? or perhaps the man just had five sets of the same clothes. "Theo! What a pleasure." The words spoken with a genuine tone as eh had just been debating whether to call the other professor Theo or Mr Silversong. No formality was required with this one though. "I have been doing quite well indeed, just getting ready for my classes: Etiquette and Floral Studies, thankfully I'll only have two classes worth of students for each. Not too busy for my first year as a professor." With a slight sip of the water in front of him Lester continued, "You're teaching adventure or something correct? How is all that going? -Also feel free to order now we don't want to be waiting until summer" An odd effort as a joke, yet his words held the truth.

Seating himself, Theo picked up a menu and scanned it for images he recognized. While he loved food, in these situations he truly hoped for a basic menu with easily recognizable foods. Not much was more embarrassing to him than thinking he knew what something was and ordering it, only to find out that the image was something else entirely and he'd tried to get something not listed. So far it was a bit of both. Some pictures he couldn't make out quite what the meal was, some looked spicy and were a no go, but there were a couple that seemed safe to order. Glancing up from his faux reading to Lester, he nodded at the man's words. "Good to hear. Those classes sound fun. I might pop in for studying plants, but I won't torture you by trying your level of etiquette," Theo grinned, imagining the aneurysms he'd cause his budding friend. Theo wasn't a dummy, but he was clumsy and more of the rough and tumble type. Putting him in a suit would be just as torturous for the niffler as he suspected Lester's experience with a dusty tracksuit would be. Besides, that sounded like it'd have some reading, which brought him back to the menu. As his arctic hues filled with indecision, he answered the prim and proper instructor's question. "Yeah, I'll be teaching Exploration and Archaeology. It should be a blast. Different from all the stuffy classroom stuff...plus, at the very least they'll learn to survive out in the elements, regardless of if they take up travel."
Motioning for a waiter, he'd made his decision. It wasn't a bad choice. He quite liked what he was about to order. "I'll have a blueberry muffin please," he chirped brightly. "And to drink?" the hipster-looking boy asked, earning a small frown from Theo. There weren't any pictures of drinks other than those made with coffee. He didn't much like coffee, or anything that came from anything titled 'bean'. "Uh..." There was a moment of panic. He kinda wanted juice. He didn't know if they had juice. He didn't want to ask, because then it'd be evident he didn't know where the drink part of the menu was. Was he overthinking this? Always. If he'd just asked the waiter what was available as if he couldn't be bothered to double check the list, that'd be normal. But nooo. Without knowing if grape juice was to be had, he resigned to the most boring, though probably the healthier option. "A water, please..."

Now that was an interesting thought, horrific, but interesting. The adventurer in an etiquette class would be an embodiment of the bull in a china shop saying. For this man before him was known to be a little clumsy, awkward, bad jokes mixed in with good ones; in his own opinion. The conversation seemed to be turning over smoothly, which was a partial blessing as due to the mundane and simplistic speaking subject he could devote much of his thoughts to the menu. Seeking out a good vegetarian option for an early lunch as he found himself rather hungry.
"Sounds like it would be perfect for you- exploration and archaology that is" Hopefully he was a terrible teacher. Lester meant that in no was as an insult towards his colleague however if in a few years time there were Theo's students breaking into places and interfering with his work then it would be slightly problematic. so he intended to take them out of the classroom, probably long trips exploring Mistere, it'd be amusing to hear of what adventures they go on. Oh ordering time, so soon, he had barely had a chance to decide. really something proper would be ideal. A strong meal to see him through the day yet his options were limited, the hesitation in theo's voice at the question of drinks caused him to raise. He knew, it wasn't hard to put a few clues together once he had observed the other male both at the academy and in the past.
The fool could have just asked in a discrete way what chilled drinks were the waiters best picks, or what was most popular. Yet it mattered not for the notepad bearing male had already turned to him in question. "Ah, can I please have some of the grilled vegetable leak, mushrooms, tomato- yet he was rudely interrupted. The bored voice of the cafe worker strongly stated a few words that he dreaded. "We've run out of that" alright, this was fine he'd just have to order something else. perhaps a nice establishment like this had some falafel or spring rolls. Yet, no there was nothing. slight as it was the tone of defeat laced is voice, "may I please have the small stack of pancakes with berries. Accompanied by a large double shot flat with with a cinnamon stick." As subtle as it was his softly spoken order was slight revenge for the lack of the waiters manners. Furiously scribbling it all down before slouching off.
"Well, now that we've ordered. How have you found this city? I am surprised to see you settling down in a large place. tying yourself down for at least a year." the statement was true, it was a shock for the adventure to slow down his pace of life especially at this age. Although he was, some odd creature, he had seen the form before but he couldn't remember the name. perhaps they had shorter life spans.

Now that the most stressful part of restauranting was over, he hastily rid his hands of the menu and settled back into his seat. The conversation would continue on in that smooth but stiff way small talk went, which was one of the few reasons he tried to stray from it if he could. Sometimes that made him come off a little weird, but he'd rather be interesting than bore someone with meaningless chatter just to fill the void of silence. However, Lester asked him a question that managed to skim a barely scabbed over wound, even eliciting a subtle squirm from the young man. Settling down. "Ah, well there was a time that I settled before...it happens sometimes, even for an adventurer like me," he mentioned casually despite the devastating twang in his heart. The flash of very complex emotions briefly shone in his eyes. He quickly shoved all the baggage under a bright smile, one that crinkled the corners of his eyes yet didn't warm the icy hues within. "It was just time again to take a little break. Gather some more info and leads to cool places with stuff to find... I ran out of maps."
It was far more complex than that. How could he explain that he wasn't born here? That after the events in his former realm, he was left a broken man in more ways than one and all he had was going back to his roots. To become an explorer and thief again, to try and reclaim what little of himself he could locate among the rubble. Reground himself. To bury and distract his mind in the new history of this world, to throw himself head first into learning everything he could and having adventures in every part of it. Relentlessly seeking the treasures in these new places. To try and rebuild something that had lost its meaning in the face of the people he'd lost. The other two members of his squad, his best friend and his lover.. those were the most precious treasures he could never hope to replace no matter how valuable and glittery the items he found in ruins and caves were. The boy who shared a name with the man in front of him and the peach girl had given him worth, and now that it was gone... who even was he? The four years he'd spent in Skiagis had at least taken him through the worst moments of his grieving process, though it hardly yielded a healed soul.
"Mistere is very advanced. One of the more bustling cities I've ever been to. Always something going on, so that should occupy me for my year's stay if teaching doesn't quite do it for me," Theo answered the rest of Lester's inquiry, shaking off his past the best he could. It was a weird, stressful relief to be in the presence of something familiar for a change, even if it was faux relief. This was not the Lester he knew, and though there were many unfamiliar things, peppered amongst them were other things that did remind him of his friend. Maybe that's why he had been drawn to this Lester from the get go, despite probably being a thorn in each other's sides. "What about you? Why did you settle here? Did you miss the challenge of trying to get to artifacts before me?" the man teased, being genuinely good natured in his jest.

Honestly that still causing him to be a little annoyed, did they not have spring rolls, or falafel or even a good museli mix. Useless, but atleast the little coffee date wouldn't be completely meaningless, with a slight sip of the complimentary water he rewinded through what Theo had said, having ran out of maps he had decided to take a little break, the words implied that it wouldn't be long, perhaps only a year or two. Which was annoying for lester and his cohorts in the short term and the long term. So the annoyance would likely go back to adventuring when his own mission was done, which meant that they would be in the field at the same time.
But Theo was slightly offset, unbalanced by the hum of the city, its technology and speed, which was nothing to be ashamed of, after all hiding in a cave for many years would well, it would cause a person to be a little overwhelmed by large and busy things. It caught him slightly off guard, so he let the slight chuckle through, enforcing it after all laughing at a joke was the polite thing to do. Warm a smile bloomed across his face. "If I remember correctly that statement could be the same for you after the amount of times I have reached a treasure first. yet what would he say? 'oh I was ordered here by the company to gather information and spy' perhaps it would pass as a joke but the statement would surely be remembered. Probably just best to go with what he had told the few students he had met. "Two things really, first off this place felt like one of peace, kirin- my species being naturally drawn to the wildlife around here there is a plant or creature which I have not yet discovered which is just luxurious to be around. Also one of the papers I wrote was with the help of a researcher based out of this city, so I figured I could work a few classes to keep money coming in- I am here as a research professor of botany you see so I have a greenhouse of my own" There were truths mixed in, honestly this as one of the more relaxed assignments so it acted as a holiday of sorts, when was that food coming, from the corner of his eye he was ably to sight the barista finishing up his double shot with a sprinkle of cinnamon as a dusting, oh he nearly forgot the stick of cinnamon, luckily remembering.
His own was brought over with a pitcher of water, the young server placing down the flat white before turning to Theo, "Would you like lemon or ice cube in your water?" It was a fair offer, and Lester was only thankful for the break, his conversation skills when it came to people he partially knew where lacking.

Lester's counter tease about the treasure earned him a cheeky grin, having the good temperament to enjoy a little rivalry. The rest of his explanation made enough sense, just about as much as the reason the icy eyed boy had given. Somehow he had a nagging that the words were also about as truthful as his own, but Theo was still feeling very out of sync, even years later.
The waiter finally returned, but not with his muffin. How long did it take? Surely they didn't make each one fresh individually. That seemed like a terrible business model, though it would honestly fit the vibe of the place. "It's fine," Theo responded to the barista, accepting his sad, plain water. Ice and a lemon would have been nice, but he didn't want to draw attention to the drink he was already needlessly self conscious about. If only he didn't have an aversion to beans, specifically coffee ones, he'd have ordered a clone of Lester's. It smelled lovely, but having once been a bean himself, it still felt somewhat like cannibalism.
"Ah, yeah. That makes sense," he answered, though to be honest he wasn't sure what a Kirin was. Whatever it was harkened even more to the sensibilities of his old friend, bringing on a pang of loss. "Mistere is peaceful. A nice place to take a break and recharge. One of the more habitable places, really. Arka is too harsh and unfriendly where there is civilization, and Hisakawa is a constant adventure outside the capital and the cardinal cities. I do favor Hisakawa, though. The ruins in those jungles are nearly endless and largely unmapped. If you can survive the tribes, it's a gold mine, isn't it?" he asked the demure man across from him. "There are still plants and animals in that jungle yet to be discovered. I find paintings on ruin walls all the time of creatures I've never seen. I thought maybe they were extinct, but I swear I caught a long, multi-armed beast of some sort scampering out of the corner of my vision...but even endless discovery can get old."
Finally their food arrived and was placed in front of them. Unlike the elegant male he shared the table with, Theo only paused a moment before devouring half the blueberry muffin as if he hadn't eaten in days. It'd really only been a few hours, but to be honest, the young man was always hungry. Furthermore, the only reason the muffin wasn't completely got was because it was so large he knew he'd choke if he tried to consume it in one go.
