When it comes to Magical Beasts in this world, none was a finer teacher than Merlissa. While others were explorers, learning about the latest findings and all, they never truly shared what they learnt. Merlissa was a teacher, the Yu Fu putting herself in harm's way to ensure she can educated students on the consequences of disrupting the peace that the magical beasts shared with people and others alike. Merlissa may have bothered her room mate with the occasional snake or frog but nothing dangerous was ever brought back, only the fascinating.
However legal procedures were to be obeyed. Whatever she kept she would return to the wild within a week. She made sure to tag the creature in order to keep track of it and when it passes, she sends it for taxidermy and donates the specimen to local zoos or museums. Some however she donates to the Academy for her class and for reference use for the students. However live specimens were always saved for the Specialist classes. After all nothing much can be learnt from a still animal. There were limits, such as the mighty Iceland Goliath. It was too big to bring in and required the cold temperatures of Asta to survive. Such animals were reserved for field trips.
The classroom for Magical Beasts was notably larger than most classes, for obvious reasons. Live specimens needed lots of room to move around in freely. Tables and chairs were not placed in this class unless there is no specimen for examination. Instead a wide protection spell was placed. Merlissa would tag the live specimens with a special enchantment that prevents them from passing through the wall. A pool of water separated the students from direct interactions with the students. It felt like a zoo exhibit. A danger sign was placed right in front of the classroom door. This animal was notably dangerous.
When the students would come in, they would notice the dim lights. The creature was no where to be seen. Merlissa would appear from the water and turn to her human form, water dripping from her ocean blue hair and her fair soft skin. Adjusting her clothes slightly, tying her tail cloth properly. Merlissa walks towards the door, checking her watch before locking it for safety procedures. Once that was done, Merlissa returns to the front, still before the water. Rubbing her neck slightly, she pulls from her bag a core and lets a golem form. Sitting on its massive palm, Merlissa takes out a pair of reading glasses from the golem and puts it on, making her look more sophisticated that before. Clicking a pen and checking her watch, the teacher glances at her clipboard before addressing the class.
"Good day class. As you may know this is the Specialist class for Magical Beasts," Merlissa cleared her throat as she writes something on the clipboard. "Now attendance will be marked automatically by the golems at the end of class. If you worry about your attendance please check with them when at the end. Now some basic guidelines and rules for new comers to the class." Merlissa looks seriously at the class, her gaze a shimmering beauty yet piercing like reflecting off the horizon.
"All students are to come in by a certain timing. No late-comers. The Magical Beasts are not obliged to wait for you to come in. Doors are locked for safety reasons. Don't think of using magic to phase through the walls either. I'm serious about both the safety of both you all and the magical beasts. There shall be no touching of the beasts until you are sterilized and protected. Some of the beasts here can be dangerous or easily infected by diseases, last thing I need is a dead innocent animal or a dead student," Merlissa writes another thing on her clipboard, an odd scratching sound can be heard in the serious silence. "Now that I have gotten that out of the way. Welcome to Magical Beasts, Specialist class. Here you shall learn the magical beasts and research techniques behind observation of the animals. Taxonomy, field expeditions and even camping skills are to be expected upon entering this class. You may leave if you think you are not interested. Now please turn off any bright lights, the magical beasts here is nocturnal and sensitive to bright light."
Merlissa turns to the stage across the water. Dirt and grass form and the other side begins to look like a clearing deep within a forest. Even the bark looks magically real. Merlissa takes from the golem a live mice like creature and tosses it through the barrier. The mouse squeaks and skits about the enclosed area after recovering. The scratching sound can be heard again, and the mouse lifts it head, looking rather confused. Merlissa tells the students to silent observe. The mouse skits about again, and reaches the center of the stage and stands upon its hind legs. Suddenly its ears expand to a large size, made from segmented sections to allow it to hide the size of its ears. They twitch with the goal of a sonar before suddenly being fixed on a direction. A fast shadow suddenly pounces on the mouse, using its paws to hold down the mouse's massive segmented ears. Unable to fold them back down the mouse squeals in terror as saliva drools onto its gray fur, before it went quiet and blood dripped on reddened fur.
A shaggy creature feasts upon the small mouse, no visible eyes upon its body. Two pale orbs emerge from its fur, tentacles cleaning the orbs that begin to look around, tendrils stretching the orbs around the stage. Its body resembled that of a bird of prey, but no feathers and all fur. The creature pulls the orbs back into it. Once it finishes its meal, it stays within the center, scratching the ground with its claws or talons. Merlissa looks at the creature with a smile before turning to the class.
"Class, you had witnessed the Fan Long Tail Mouse been ambushed by its primary predator, the Orb Raven," Merlissa writes something on her clipboard. "Now class, the Orb Raven is not a bird. It is instead a form of bipedal mammal. The large orbs that it pulls out from beneath are actually its eyes. Today's class will be the study of prey-predatory evolution. In layman's terms, it is how the predator hunts prey and how prey avoids its predator. Can anyone hypothesize a possible reason for the Orb Raven's signature orb eyes? Remember a hypothesis is a studied guess, a belief based around currently existing interactions."
