welcome to Eldritch Academy
In a world of myths and mysteries, the pinnacle of the magical academies exists. Eldritch Academy offers education to all ages and species but specializes in the study and training of one's innate mystical capabilities, often called Eldritch Energies, Powers, or Unknowns, but more formally known as their Talent. However, tensions run high with the nations only holding a fragile peace as the Talents that rival the epitomes of technology change the balance of power.
With the more recent uprising of evil Shades and introduction of combat-oriented programs into Talent-focused schools, nations grow more aggressive towards one another. The demand for resources grows, and skirmishes at the border of Arka and Mistere become more frequent. Monsters run into the nations from the Wildes, terrorizing villages and cities. The need for trained or in-training Hunters and Guardians has never been more urgent.

It was rare, but Rose had left the library and the garden to step foot into the cafeteria for the first time. It wasn't of her own volition, though. One of her classes had assigned the dreaded group projects, and supposedly her group wanted to meet at lunch in the place where most students ate. However, as she walked in, none of the faces looked familiar. So not to stick out like a sore thumb-- an odd concept now that her thumbs were metal and could no longer actually be sore-- the blonde entered the food line and got herself a sandwich and some fruit. She wasn't one for crowds, so she was feeling pretty out of her element as she looked for the end of an empty table, one that had enough seats for her group while also positioning her near an exit and as far from the other eaters as possible.
Sandwiches were the easiest for her to eat, though she couldn't lie she was weary of them. Sure, it required no fine motor control and didn't have her bending metal cutlery and snapping plasticware, but there was only so many variations of bread, meat, and toppings that could offer the different flavors she craved. At this point she would rather have military rations. Even so, she continued to eat it as her brilliant blue eyes watched for her fellow students. Rose was distinctly starting to get the feeling she'd been stood up, and that her group wasn't coming. This was the only cafeteria, so the location and time wasn't the issue. It looked like she'd be doing the entire assignment herself, but truthfully she didn't mind. At least it'd be done right, plus she could do it alone without relying on the unreliability of others. Still she watched every face enter the cafeteria just in case, and also because that was just her training. Be aware and ready for action always.

Aspen sighed, looking up from the notes that had been hastily scribbled down all over the white piece of paper, her eyes swerving to the cup with the steaming, dark liquid. "Coffee", they called it, the girl had never experienced something quite like it before, the precious resource not broadly available in the cold and wet climates of her homeland. Still, it was quite the wonder. It was consumed boiling hot, sometimes with things to make it less ... offensive to the tongue such as sugar or milk, it simultaneously warmed you up and energized you. Aspen preferred her coffee black, without the excessively sweet ingredient to take away from the admittedly bitter but wholesome taste of the beverage. Taking a sip from the liquid before centering her attention once more on the piece of paper before her, she was once again immersed in her studies, paying no attention to her surroundings.
Aspen had spent some good time reading, writing and learning the recent few weeks, the life of an academy student filling up her schedule, which had otherwise been filled with much more free time and, as she regretted having to admit, much more sleep, she was trying her best to find a way to balance things. Besides, this coffee stuff really helped. Still, there was one thing that bothered the young mercenary girl, the fact that combat training came second in this place. It was very much true that Arka and Mistere held a rather fragile peace, but from the looks of it this was not a thing on the minds of many Misterians, while in Arka everyone, as she knew, was very keenly aware of the fact that conflict was a thing that could arise at all times and without warning. She took another sip from her coffee, her eyes focussed on the writing, bringing her thoughts back to one of her most recent classes. She had purposefully sat at a rather empty table to not be disturbed, sitting in a corner with her back turned towards most of the crowd, so centered on the black ink on the sheet that she didn't notice the other person that sat down at the table ...

With a sigh, Rose accepted that she'd be both eating and working alone. Both annoying and a relief. She finished her sandwich quickly, moving on to her apple. It was awkward to eat such a round, waxy fruit with gloves on. Between the waxy surface and the leather on her fingers, getting a reliable grip was tricky. In this case, she was only two bites in when her grip tightened too much and launched her dessert down the table at an odd angle. Her soft lips pulled into a vaguely irritated frown, aquamarine eyes following it as it moved toward a person sitting likewise by herself. The blonde didn't move to try and get it, knowing it was moving far too fast. Any attempt to flail and scramble after it would only make a ruckus and cause her to look foolish. It was regrettable that it rolled across the inky pages the other figure at the table seemed to be studying, leaving a thin trail of natural sugars from the apple's broken flesh.
"Ah, excuse me," Rose muttered, knowing the sudden intrusion of her rogue fruit must have bothered the student. "It slipped..." she continued, then trailed off into silence. An intense silence. As her hues lifted from the last part of her lunch to the studying girl, her blood turned to slush. All motion ceased. She barely breathed. Those eyes trained on the girl widened slightly, color standing out even more against her rapidly paling features. While her body turned to ice, her mind blazed. It was...her. Her. How could this be? How could the soldier, the mercenary that cleaved her arms from her body be sitting there, so close and ever so casually sipping coffee in Eldritch Academy's cafeteria? Metal hands, hidden from view, clenched into fists in her lap. This girl had ruined her career as a soldier, as well as changed her life forever. This girl had been the only opponent she was ever defeated by. Spectacularly felled, nearly killed by this very person sitting a mere few feet away. Yet all she could do was stare at Aspen, the bells of fear and rage deafening all the rabble of the other students out.

Just when the girl moved to take a sip from the cup of coffeonce more, perhaps the last sip of this cup even, she would work on getting another one soon, she looked up, a fruit rolling over the various notes and sheet spread out before herself, her brow twitching visibly. Was everyone in this place as much of a moron as she thought ? Who the hell lacked control over the most basic motoric functions required to keep a hold of an apple ? She turned her head quickly, her eyes falling on another girl on the other side of the table.
The blonde apologized immediately, but that did not quell Aspens anger with the unchangeable fact that her notes now had a visible stain of apple running across the pages scribbled with ink, Aspens eyes alight with burning hate. "Don't you know how to use your hands, girl ?", she asked with a tone of pure fire, speaking hastily and in visible agitation, eyeing the girl closer. Wait ... did she know her from somewhere ? The mercenary girl had the feeling she had seen this person before somewhere, but she couldn't quite put her finger on it. That was of course until she saw the girl go pale, taking a closer look at her, squinting when she was suddenly hit with the realization ...
Her eyes widened in a small shock. Out of all places and out of all people, why exactly here and why exactly her ? Immediately Aspen sprung up and jumped back, jamming her hands into her pockets without ever looking away from the girl she had met such a long time ago, the girl who had given her the only scar she had ever received from a battle. Her eyes began to glow, their natural colour almost erupting with power as she did nothing but stare, grasping the coins that she carried with her at all times in both her hands before opening her mouth. "So, you've come to finish the deal, huh ? I would have expected something more classy than a school. Looking good for yourself, though. Even got a pair of new arms", finishing her sentence she threw the coins up, the metal immediately turning into a thick, dirty looking liquid before coalescing in one of her hands, forming a blade. Undoubtedly, the other had come back to take revenge for that one day when she had lost against the mercenary girl from Arka, but she wouldn't get it. Aspen had not only gotten stronger, she had grown wiser, and if she had a say in the matter, than Aspen would be the one who would pay the blonde back for the scar over her left eye ...

Rose mirrored Aspen's motion of jumping to her feet, though her hands were simply held in front of her defensively. Not one for speaking much in combat if it didn't give her the advantage, her mouth was drawn into a tense frown. She was still clearly shaken, but it was morphing into very thinly veiled rage. Couldn't this dishonorable girl see that if she'd wanted to 'finish the deal' as she put it, rolling an apple across the table and then freezing like a deer in headlights wasn't the most efficient way to go about it? If she'd been here to exact revenge and revenge alone, it was clear Aspen might have not even been aware of it until after the blade was lodged in her back...or her throat was slit...or once her neck snapped. How it was happening now was the very definition of the situation Rose would have hoped the opposite of, the antithesis of her dreams. Being startled and unprepared...and actually weaker than the last time they'd faced each other.
But soon that didn't matter. Old training died hard, so within seconds of realizing she was in danger, her brain was back on the battlefield. Rose could hardly notice she was in a cafeteria, nor did she care. Gripping the edges of the table that had cleared of all people, she flipped it up on it's side to act as a shield. Probably a pretty odd thing for one of the quietest, more fragile and gentle students to do. Any of her classmates present would never have thought a thing from her, yet here she was behind this flipped table using her teeth to remove her restrictive leather gloves to reveal gleaming metallic hands. A red glow and some steam later, and her right hand had formed into a blade as well.
"There is nothing classy about what we do," Rose said, kicking the table forward with surprising force for her size. Her left hand flung outward, magnetizing all the metal within a few feet of her. Barraging Aspen with cutlery and loose change would be a nice distraction while she rushed the girl sporting the eye scar with her blade. With any luck, she'd pay back her back for the loss of her arms by maybe reaping her eyes properly this time, or at the very least take her damnable life.
Apparently they'd attempt to finish what they started quite some time ago right in the middle of Eldritch Academy's cafeteria, forgetting they were both students and this was probably super frowned upon.
