welcome to Eldritch Academy
In a world of myths and mysteries, the pinnacle of the magical academies exists. Eldritch Academy offers education to all ages and species but specializes in the study and training of one's innate mystical capabilities, often called Eldritch Energies, Powers, or Unknowns, but more formally known as their Talent. However, tensions run high with the nations only holding a fragile peace as the Talents that rival the epitomes of technology change the balance of power.
With the more recent uprising of evil Shades and introduction of combat-oriented programs into Talent-focused schools, nations grow more aggressive towards one another. The demand for resources grows, and skirmishes at the border of Arka and Mistere become more frequent. Monsters run into the nations from the Wildes, terrorizing villages and cities. The need for trained or in-training Hunters and Guardians has never been more urgent.

After a long and tiring day, Oras had stayed in the common room of the East Wing. The Sage student area. He refused to leave his summoner unguarded, and the reason he wasn't in the academy right now was specifically because she was in the middle of class. He told her he had somewhere to go, and not to kill herself while he was out. He didn't sleep last night, but that's mainly because Atranoch's never sleep. Thus Oras didn't need to sleep. He simply entered a meditation state, which allowed him to utilize his higher brain functions to process, imagine, and test ideas, thoughts. And many concepts humans can hardly grasp. This was one of the benefits of living in a realm that rested between worlds of reality, and abstract worlds of fantasy. He made it abundantly clear to anyone who listened that he was going to keep his summoner guarded whenever he could. And by extension, revealed his distrust in humanity as a whole. Trust did exist if he got to know the individual enough. But it was hard. Especially with his summoner...
Right now Oras was speeding to a forest several miles away from the capital. He wasn't in his human form, nor his true form. He shattered his body into fragments and dust and rode the wind to get there faster. This was because he wanted to reduce his time away from his summoner as much as possible. Soon enough, he reached the forest and pulled his shards together, becoming human again. Another great thing about being an Atranoch? He could just put himself together over and over again and not feel pain.. Unless someone else cut him up that is.
He began to walk through the forest whistling a tune, his sword resting on his shoulder.

The hybrid slowly walked through the forest, taking surveillance of the area around her. The day had been busy for her, as a new family of elves had moved in, and she helped them set up a living space for them. She'd also completed her daily rounds around the numerous graves, checking to see if any headstones or if the graves themselves were damaged in any way. No grave robbers had shown up today, which was a relief for her. It meant less trouble for her to deal with.
Anarra's thoughts wandered as she walked, and as they always did within the past few days, they strayed back to the Atronach she'd met. He had said he was coming back, but it had been weeks now. Perhaps he'd forgotten. Or perhaps he never meant to keep his word in the first place. She could never be sure if creatures meant what they said. At least animals didn't lie to her; they respected her enough to tell her the truth. But other creatures were a mystery to her. Why would they say something they didn't mean? Why would they lie to one another? Doing so only caused trouble for themselves and for others around them.
She shook her head, pushing away the thoughts. She was supposed to be heading for her own resting place, which wasn't far from here. With the day being late afternoon, the sun was sinking in the sky. She could feel herself growing less alert, moving slower than she usually did. In a few hours the sun would no longer be in the sky and she would need to sleep; to rest her weary mind and body. Giving a snort, she continued on her way, but stopped upon hearing a noise that sounded foreign in the woods.
It was a whistle. The sound was faint, but she could hear it nonetheless. Turning her head towards the noise, Anarra began to slowly make her way to it. The birds in the trees told her that a strange creature was walking through the woods, and the insects on the ground told her it was holding a weapon. She nodded to them in reply, and continued onwards. If it was something dangerous, she would deal with it like how she dealt with all the other threats that entered her forest. Permanently.
Soon she could see a familiar looking Atronach walking through the woods, not far from her position. Her tense posture relaxed upon recognizing him. Surprise shot through her. She wasn't sure if he would return or not.
Her face, being a skull, couldn't show emotions. But her voice showed it well enough, as the surprise was easy to hear as she spoke to the Atronach. "I must admit, I did not expect you to return here, Oras Auro. You have been gone for some time."

Hearing a sound, mainly the crunching of leaves and grass, he smiled and turned to the direction it was coming from just as she spoke up. She was obviously surprised, and it wasn't just her voice that betrayed that fact. Her posture showed it as well. He had taken some extra time to study her kind, so he knew her biology better. Therefore he could identify what would be her 'muscle's', and thus is able to read them from here on out. He chuckled and replied. "Yeah, my summoner is a pain in every sense of the word. Still, if she dies I get sent back, so I have to keep her safe regardless." His face would darken for a second. "What I can't stand, is how she exploited that undeniable fact.." he muttered. He then returned to his usual self, once again trying to cover his true feelings. He had to stay calm. At least she didn't appear attractive at all. Otherwise this would be way harder than it should be.
"As for coming back, of course I was planning to! You are the first person I've met in this world so far who has entered combat with me! A nice spar is one of my favorite pastimes. Unfortunately, or at least according to my summoner, most people don't care for that nowadays. What a bore, am I right?" He flourished his sword in an arc before sheathing it, and placed his hand on his left hip. "So then. Have you thought it over? Got bored enough with your dull life of guarding a forest to humans? Or maybe you want to bring the fight to them? That would be interesting to see... I might even help you if you went about it the right way."

Anarra tilted her head slightly as she listened to Oras explain about his summoner. He'd mentioned it when they'd first met as well. The idea of being able to keep a creature against their will was still confusing to her, and it angered her as well. Nobody should keep others like pets. "So you have not found a suitable replacement for her as of yet? Does she treat you well? Perhaps she could help get rid of the summoner...... if she treated Oras badly, there was no reason to keep the Atronach tied to her. Removing one evil creature wouldn't harm the world's balance.
"Spars are enjoyable, yes. When they do not ruin the place you call your home." It had taken her several days to repair the damage done during their fight. "I have asked the inhabitants living here if they are wiling to protect the forest while I am not around. They agreed to do so. I do not wish to cause harm to humans or other creatures, but to learn about them."

Oras chuckled and would reply without hesitation to her question. "Awww, the forest guardian cares about me. Ain't that sweet~" He shook his head. "But no. It's not that simple really. Not only does she treat me fairly, so long as I don't grind her with my usual speech methods, but she even insists I can go and do whatever I please. That I'm not bound by her. However, as I already said, it's not that simple." Oras held his hand out in the air as he explained. "When an Atranoch is summoned into this world, it can be temporary, or permanently. We come assuming the summoner has a wish, goal or need they require assistance with. We Atranoch's are willing to provide said assistance. We have respect towards our summoners, and do our best to aid them." He looked up to the sky, almost as if he were speaking to whatever gods existed now. "So despite her being a prick and summoning me to satisfy her own damn curiosity, I feel obliged to help her in whatever goal she's hiding from me. To protect her for her sake, and for my own. I will not switch summoners without good reason to."
Oras was in fact, a very complicated individual. Most of the time he kept his true feelings silent. And even now he was. In truth he'd rather learn more about his summoner, and why she acts the way she does towards him, rather than just exist with her out of sheer loyalty. He wanted to see if it was possible to create a stronger bond with her. And he hoped to do so soon so that he could visit them... Before it was too late...
At hearing her words on sparring he laughed. "Yeah, we really did trash the place didn't we? I'll take what you said in mind, but really destruction is hard to avoid period. That is what happens when a hurricane comes along does it not? Twisters rip and shred everything in their path. Lightning causes a forest fire. Floods bulldoze trees down into dust. Destruction is a part of nature. Better to channel it than to stop it. You try stopping destruction and death, it only occurs elsewhere, sometimes even worse." Then she moved on to tell him that she did in fact reach a decision. That there were other beings in the forest that agreed to protect it, and that she would go out to learn about humans, rather than destroy them. He blinked before responding. "...So like, more of your kind? More sentient beings of nature? Or did you ask the animals to protect the forest? Cause I doubt animals will do much."

The hybrid was silent as she listened to the Atronach's explanation, her empty eye sockets staring at him. She didn't have eyelids, so she couldn't blink. Nor could she raise an eyebrow, as she would've done at this moment had she actually had eyebrows. She didn't reply for a few long moments, thinking over what she'd heard. "......You choose to stay with your summoner, then? You are not forced to do so?" If that was the case, maybe things weren't as bad as she first thought. She still didn't like the fact that the Atronach had a creature who held power over him, but if he chose to stay with his summoner, then it would be unjust of her to act of her own accord when her aid wasn't needed.
"Natural destruction is different than causing the destruction yourself." She replied pointedly. "I am merely suggesting that the next time we spar, it will be somewhere where neither of us lives."
Anarra slowly shook her head then, at Oras' next question. "There is only one of my kind, Mr. Auro." She said softly, turning her head away from him slightly, gazing at a tree close to him rather than looking directly at him. There was a tinge of sadness to her words, and her posture changed slightly, her shoulders lowering a bit, as though they were hunched. She wasn't sad to be what she was; she'd learned to accept it a long time ago. But being the only hybrid like her tended to cause her to be a bit lonely, when she couldn't sleep, and her thoughts wandered to darker things in the middle of the night. Both her parents were dead, and had been for nearly two hundred years. She was alone, and had been alone for a long time. Despite being around animals and other creatures who respected her, she still felt lonely at times.
Shaking off the thoughts, she turned her gaze back to the Atronach. "I have asked the animals, yes. However there are other creatures who will help, such as elves, fairies, centaurs, among others. They will aid in keeping the forest protected." It would have been foolish to only ask the animals; they could only do so much after all. But them, along with creatures who could wield magic and spells, had a much better chance at defending their home.

There wasn't much movement in the hybrid at first, but when she spoke it would be clear how she was feeling. Oras chuckled. "Well, yes and no. Yes in that I'm sticking with her until I see some sign that she's twisted and evil. No in the sense that. Well until I find someone willing to summon me back and put up with me, if I break this bond I'll have to rely on the hope that someone will decide to summon me for whatever reason not long after our bond had broken. Can't take that risk, there's something I need to do in this human lifetime." Hearing her mention how natural destruction was different than the destruction caused by mankind, he shrugged. "Not sure if you know this, but they're kind of the same thing at this rate. Inglisse, my summoner, insists that the world is at peace right now, but I'm calling that bluff." He wasn't about to hide the fact that he held no trust towards mankind as a whole anytime soon. "But yeah, I don't mind where we fight as long as we get to let loose."
He saw her shake her head slowly, her body shifting to show much burden and pain. Clearly, the fact that she was the only hybrid of her kind was really really bothering her... What was with these people? First the Phoenix and Grim hybrid, and now her? And the fact of the matter was that she was less of a monstrosity. He rolled his eyes to the heavens before speaking up. "What is with you people? Who gives a damn about whether you're the only hybrid or not? Do you have any family members? Any friends? A circle of group you can call family? Honestly, you should be proud to be a hybrid. Proud to be the child of your parents. I don't know if it's shame, or if it's wanting more hybrid family members, but that's the fact." He shook his head as he sighed, but said no more. This wasn't the right time.
When she told him that she had not just animals, but fairies, elves, centaurs, etc. to guard the forest he couldn't help but burst out laughing. "Oh my gosh! Are you kidding me? All of those people who naturally defend their territory, and you never thought of asking them to hold the fort while you went out to explore? How long have you been alive? Ha ha ha ha!"

”Oh? What do you have to do while you are here?” The curiousity was clear to hear in her voice. Was he on a mission of some sort, then?
At Oras’ comment about being a hybrid, Anarra was silent. She listened until he was finished speaking, thinking about his words. ”I am not ashamed of my heritage, Mr. Auro. I learned to accept my differences many years ago.” She didn't care about what others thought of her. They could think she was a monster, and she wouldn't flick a leaf at them. She was what she was, and nobody's opinion of her would make her feel any less about herself. But even though the forest was full of magical creatures, she couldn't help the sense of loneliness that haunted her some nights. She didn’t give an explanation for her feelings. The Atronach didn’t need to know.
When he laughed at her, the ground beneath Oras’ feet would tremble, the rocks at his feet visibly vibrating on the ground. This would be only outward sign that the hybrid was angry. That, and the fact that her voice could shatter stone from the anger laced in her words. ”I have looked after my home for many years. Many of the creatures living here now were either far too young or too inexperienced to protect this land. It would have been cruel of me to ask them to risk their lives.” Now of course, the creatures were grown and had families of their own, and even grandchildren and great grandchildren in some instances. She had waited long enough to ask for their aid.

As expected, the first thing she asked was about what he was planning on doing. What exactly was his primary goal while on this earth? The issue with that however, was that he didn't want to tell anyone who was very clearly his friend rather than ally. And from the way things have been progressing, he was not about to have any close friends any time soon. "Sorry~ but that's for me to know and you to know.. Never." He grinned as he said this, hiding the emotion behind the truth.
When she called him mister Auro he rolled his eyes. "Oras. Jeez, have you not got the connection yet that formality is pointless with me?" When she finished he would cross his arms together. "You haven't answered my question. Do you or do you not have any family or friends who don't care that you are a hybrid?" When she caused the ground to rumble, he didn't faze, and in fact chuckled a bit more at the attempt to intimidate him. When she finished he'd simply snicker and smirk. "Oh come on. It's not like when they die of old age they leave behind their infant. They live in groups together. Mixtures of infants, toddlers, children, teenagers, adults and elders. There are not all the same age. And if they are then that's the stupidest thing I have ever heard."

The ground would stop trembling as Anarra forced herself to become calm once again. She stopped, cleared her mind, and contemplated the Atronach's words. It was clear he wasn't going to tell her his goal; that was fine with her. She had asked only out of curiosity, not with any real need to know. If he wished to keep it to himself, then so be it. Just as long as he didn't harm her home or the inhabitants living here, he was free to do what he wished.
As to why he was asking if she had family or friends..... or if they cared that she was a hybrid, she was confused. After a long pause, she finally answered his question. "........My family has been gone for two hundred years M-...... Oras. I consider the animals and the creatures that live here my friends, yes. They do not care that I am a hybrid. Though I must admit, I do not understand why you are asking."
She tilted her head slightly at his statement of them being the same age. The thought almost made her laugh, imagining elders and infants being the same age mentally and physically. It was strange to think about, indeed. "Regardless, they have agreed to guard the forest when I am gone."

When she answered him, then stated her confusion as to why he asked he placed his hand on his forehead and shook, sighing. "Damn. It's like you're intelligent yet stupid at the same time... I asked because of your posture you idiot. When you said "I'm the last of my kind", it was clear you were being burdened with sadness and something else. Regardless of what it is, something was burdening you. The first logical thing that made sense when you combine that, and what you had said, was that you were lonely somehow. The typical reason for hybrids is that they are brought down by what others have said. That both their parent's race reject them, and thus they have that feeling of abandonment. Of isolation. A burden they carry. If it's not that then explain to me what exactly that burden of yours is." The fact that she couldn't figure out why he had asked her was something that annoyed him. It was sheer common sense as to how he figured that and asked said question. That she didn't catch that showed how poor her observational skills were.
He saw her tilt her head, but beyond that he couldn't see any emotion. He frowned when there was none. "...I know you have no face, but is it possible for your flames to change color according to your emotions?" Granted it would be a disadvantage for her, but if she could turn it on and off. Maybe she'd be willing to do so around individuals she came to trust. He trusted her personally, but he wasn't sure if they'd be good friends yet. He'd need to see how she reacted to... Well him on a daily basis.

"I understood why you asked the question, Oras. I just did not understand the..... the reasoning behind your question, if you will." Anarra replied, thinking of how best to explain herself. Speaking with intelligent creatures was always much more difficult for her than talking to animals. It always confused her. As it was, calling the Atronach 'Oras' instead of the formal 'Mr. Auro' was very strange for her; it was just something she was going to have to get used to, she supposed.
The Atronach had asked a question, and he deserved an honest answer from her. "I am not afraid of rejection. Both my parents were kind to me, though I have never met another of their kind in my lifetime. I wish to do so, however, in the future, so I can learn more about them." For a moment she fell silent again, shifting from hoof to hoof as she thought. And she spoke once again. Careful of what she said, so there would be no misunderstandings. "It is not abandonment I feel. However I do feel a sense of.... loneliness... at times. The other creatures living here respect me, yes. They just....." She paused, thinking of the words to say. "They do not understand me. They do not.... understand why I do things.... why I say things the way I do-"
She stopped speaking, snorting in slight frustration and shaking her head slowly, puffs of frost leaving her nostrils due to the chilly air. The words she wanted to say weren't coming to her. Why was it always difficult for her to explain what she was trying to say? "It is.... difficult for me to explain."
Was it petty of her to want to find her parent's species so she could fit in with either one of them? That she wanted to stop feeling so alone, despite always being surrounded by those who counted her as a friend? As their protector? It wasn't as if she was ungrateful towards them; she counted them as a friend just as much as they to her. But there was that feeling of loneliness that kept her from truly feeling like she belonged there. That sense of belonging had died when her parents passed on, leaving a void that she hadn't been able to fill.
When she was very young, and her parents had recently passed, her sense of duty to protect those that lived in her home, and to protect her home itself from intruders, was the thing that had drove her. She had hoped that looking over the inhabitants, and keeping herself busy would help. There'd been many nights when she'd run herself ragged before finally collapsing from exhaustion. But over the years that drive had been waning, and she'd found herself looking out more and more to the small villages on the outskirts of the forest. She'd even taken the form of a human a few times and walked amongst the humans for short periods of time, hoping to satisfy herself by trying to learn about their culture. But it hadn't been enough. The curiosity was real; she was wanting to learn about humans and other creatures, but part of it was giving herself a reason to keep busy. To distract her mind for however long she could.
Anarra directed her gaze back to Oras as he asked another question, one that intrigued her. Her flames changing color based on her emotions? The curiosity in her voice was clear as she spoke once again. "I.... have not tried that. The thought never occurred to me." She'd had no reason to, after all. The animals understood her well enough through her body language.... though perhaps it would be beneficial when speaking to the other magical creatures. They often had trouble telling what she was feeling.
Perhaps she could try that now.
Bowing her head, looking at the ground - she had no eyelids and thus could not close her eyes - she concentrated. Concentrating on a single emotion, she willed herself to feel it throughout her entire body. Happiness. The feeling of new buds sprouting in spring. A smiling face. The smell of the forest. The sound of laughter ringing through the air. Shouts of joy. The feeling of warmth as the sun shone down on her. Looking at the faces of her parents.
As Oras would watch, traces of yellow appeared in the usually light blue flames adorning her antlers and mane. Slowly but surely, the yellow traces would grow and spread, until all of her flames were the same yellow color.

After hearing her clarify her previous statement, and how she didn't understand the reasoning behind his question, not the why, Oras hesitated for a moment. Then he sighed, placing his head into his right hand. "Ugh, you need work on communication. You're trying to ask why I would bother asking you right? Not what lead me to the understanding I was at, not why I asked the question, but why I cared enough to ask it?" Oras scoffed. "Because I'm not some selfish bastard who only cares about myself you idiot. Otherwise your forest would be frozen by now. I won't force you to do anything, but if I can show people how much of an idiot they're being and how to change for the better, then I'm going to do it."
He knew it was hard for people to understand. Why people tried to help one another. Why they tried to lift one another up. For good reason of admittedly. There were plenty of people who just used others. Manipulating them to their own needs, acting as a puppeteer. However Anarra didn't have that excuse. She didn't have the kind of experience he had with mankind as a whole. She only stalled productions or fended off grave robbers. Or as Oras liked to call the former: Lazy bums. She didn't really have a reason not to suspect he was doing this because he cared.
"You say you want to meet your own people because you're lonely? Then get off your ass and go do it. Decide what your priorities are: If you want to go search, stop wasting time and go search. If you want to learn more so you can not only survive, but locate the best place to find one of them, then come with me to the academy. Instead of let the feeling of loneliness bring you down as a burden, use it as a drive. As motivation. Let the excitement of going out and exploring, adventuring for your relatives fill your very being." He drew his sword and held it out to her, the blade flashing in the daylight. "Set your goals in front of you and never look behind. Don't listen to the complaints, the hate, the stupidity of others around you. Harden your resolve and push forward. I don't care if you're three hundred years old or a thousand. If you can't see that, you're just as stupid as eighty percent of the population is."
He sheathed his sword, closing his eyes. It was rare he pulled a lecture out like that. However she was actually listening to him. And their first meeting was a good one. In other words: Luck was on his side with Anarra. If she had been his summoner, things could have been far, far different. She then tested his theory about changing the colors of her flames. He coked his head. "Huh, well what do you know." He grinned. "That will make it easier for friends and allies, though I'd keep your flames neutral around potential enemies."

The flames turned back to their normal light blue color as Anarra looked back at Oras. Communication was not one her strong suits; she would admit that openly.
She listened to his lecture, and her flames flickered green for a few moments. Amusement. The same amusement would be in her voice as she spoke to the Atronach once again. If she could smile, she would be doing so. "You remind me of some knights I met long ago. You have the same passion for dramatics they had. You may be more.... sarcastic.... than they were. But you have a good heart."
She wasn't naive or a fool. She knew very well that people were capable of deadly things; even her. Many of the creatures that dared to harm the inhabitants living in her forest did not live to try a second time. But with the Atronach, she could sense that he was better than most.
At Oras's offer to come with him to the academy, she thought about it. Remembering conversations she'd heard the inhabitants speaking of, she knew that an academy was a school; a place of learning. She would need to learn about the world if she was going to be exploring it, after all. How was she going to find her relatives if she didn't know anything about the world, or about them? After a moment, she nodded. "I would like to come with you to the academy, Oras."

He didn't get much of a reaction, as he would expect. Though her flames did turn green... But which emotion was that? He needed to make a chart for her emotions, and get her to tell him. Either that or work hard at reading her body posture so he could try connecting what color was which emotion. When she spoke, she told him how Oras reminded him of some knights in her past. Telling him that they too had a passion for dramatics. Oras chuckled and tilted his head to the left with a smug grin. "It can help a lot when getting the point across. Certainly draws the attention don't you think?" When she mentioned how he had a good heart he hesitated before replying. "...I'm not like the other Atranochs'. They simply wish to learn more about this world. I aim to change it. Watching your world struggle over the stupidest things.. I come down to teach you all a lesson you very much need. Perspective."
She fell silent for a bit, which gave him time to compose himself. Why was he spilling his guts out like this? She didn't have any reason to know. She wasn't fully resolved herself... Though admittedly she was making the process easy. Or... Easier. When she spoke up again, she told him she would like to go join him at this academy. He nodded with a smirk. "Well alright then, how about we go ahead and take the trip? You have people guarding right? And I'm guessing you don't have any luggage to bring with you."
