welcome to Eldritch Academy
In a world of myths and mysteries, the pinnacle of the magical academies exists. Eldritch Academy offers education to all ages and species but specializes in the study and training of one's innate mystical capabilities, often called Eldritch Energies, Powers, or Unknowns, but more formally known as their Talent. However, tensions run high with the nations only holding a fragile peace as the Talents that rival the epitomes of technology change the balance of power.
With the more recent uprising of evil Shades and introduction of combat-oriented programs into Talent-focused schools, nations grow more aggressive towards one another. The demand for resources grows, and skirmishes at the border of Arka and Mistere become more frequent. Monsters run into the nations from the Wildes, terrorizing villages and cities. The need for trained or in-training Hunters and Guardians has never been more urgent.

| the look of me when i opened my eyes,
it was so bright that i didnt dare approach |
The world revolves around the sun. People wake and sleep, plants open and close their buds, and temperatures drop and rise. It causes seasons, weather—change—on the flying rock that all those live on. Nighttime is the scarce time when the sun rests. When the impartial creatures reveal themselves outside of its aggressive, nurturing light. When creatures of different religions... Species intermingle. How a lone Alatum—who so graciously worships the moon—can be so unaware of moon phoenixes and their tendencies.
Much less so in the winter, when temperatures drop too cold for comfortable roaming... Unless you're a pyromancer or possess a personal heating rune.
When the sun dips below the horizon, so does the scouring eye of the public. Dove-white wings appear alongside a pearl horn. With an excited glint of his eyes, he soars into the sky, moonlight cresting his skin—making it glow brightly—as moving air playfully brushes across his skin. LAIKA OF THQ

The night. The sun god sleeps. The turning of the globe hides Kiran's god's precious rays from him, reflecting them in poor imitation from a frigid rock floating up in space that dictated the ocean's tide. It brought darkness, cold, and controlled water. So basically everything he fundamentally wasn't fond of on principle alone. Phoenixes of any alignment could still draw strength from these accursed recycled rays of light, but his own talents waned under it. The flames and sun-like light and heat he wielded shrunk like testicles in cold water. Water doused his flames, the ocean had once been a torturous watery prison, and his own talent waned in the false glow. Basically, his blessed flames, light, and heat shrunk like testicles in cold water.
The sun phoenix gazing out his dorm window much preferred to be getting up to either distracting activities or sleeping at these literally ungodly hours, but tonight was one of those. A terror had woke him, robbed him of his blissful sleep. Even after calming, reclaiming it was eluding him. His jealousy over his roommates light breaths of slumber put him in a bit of a mood, enough to give up for the time being. Quietly he pulled his legs up into the windowsill and leaped off. Bright wings appeared instantly on his back, glowing and warm, and plenty big to handle his weight and size. Their hues were just as warm as suggested, like feathery flame with the oranges, reds, and yellows. The tattooed boy took to the sky, hoping to clear his head enough to return to sleep before the sun rose once more and called him to his morning jog.
Reaching back to tie long ebony locks into a bun to keep the wind from tangling it, his eyes noticed another figure in the sky. Something ethereal and fluffy white. If his eyesight hadn't been literally as keen as a bird's, he might not have recognized the now horned individual, but he could swear the soaring being was the kid he'd met on his first day. Seth, wasn't it? Well, he'd soon find out if he was right or wrong. "Hey, Seth!" he called, waiting to see if his classmate would acknowledge him.

| the look of me when i opened my eyes,

After a light sheen of sweat covers his arms and face his wings lift upon finding a steady updraft, making lazy ascent much easier. He "roosts" midair allowing the current to carry him upwards without too much effort, then floats downwards, with his long hair flapping wildly behind him. He regrets not bringing a hair tie, to say the least.
With the moon high overhead, a slightly familiar voice calls his name. He turns around, amber eyes struggling slightly as he matches the voice with a body and name. He blinks a few times, like a deer caught in the headlights of a car, frazzled. He briefly considers running—flying—away, but decides against it, having recently finished a character arc regarding that sort of behavior. He turns around, or turns around to the best of his ability, being airborne and everything. He doesn't expect the bird boy to freak out at another winged person.
With a quick flick of his wrist, most of the sweat visible on his body flies off and into the air below him. "Kiran!" he says, partially relieved, "You never mentioned you had wings, or that you... aren't human." He smiles. "I don't usually see you out at night. Is there a reason why?" He chuckles, "Nevermind that: I actually should be the one explaining why I'm outside this early in the morning." He stares at the moon, dead-set, afterwards. LAIKA OF THQ

"Despite most of my other meetings here, announcing my species status generally isn't on my list of first things to do upon greeting," Kiran quipped good-naturedly, though he did suppose an explanation was in order. He was only showing his bird wings in a partial transformation, since any more than that usually got him labeled a flaming chicken or turkey. Who was he kidding? That happened anyway as soon as they found out. Couldn't he just be a majestic, immortal bird and be respected as such? Really, comparing him to food was so uncreative and rude. He didn't go around calling humans annoying meat bags, now did he? Maybe Seth could relate, now that it was revealed he wasn't human either. But...what was he? "I'm a phoenix, so you're right. Not human," grinned the boy with fiery pride. "but please, don't call me a roasted chicken. It gets old, but remains a very common tease for some reason."
Kiran never really minded prying questions. He wasn't the type to walk on eggshells around people and their feelings, though he did recognize some things were off limits. For him it was talk of the war, since he'd lived through it and remained haunted all these years later. However, explaining why he was rarely out at night wasn't skirting too close to war territory. It's not like he was obligated to tell the also not-human boy he shared the airspace with that his nightmares of days long past had driven him out under the moon god's mocking gaze. "I'm more of a morning person than a night person. The more sunlight I can get, the better. But I couldn't sleep, and I hate staying still for too long. Maybe some fresh air will help," mused the fire bird, giving his orange wings a few healthy flaps so he could maintain his altitude. Seth's introspective comment didn't go unnoticed, so he turned curious peridot eyes on him. "Why are you outside, Seth? I'll admit, I'm a little surprised to see you with wings soaring up here as well..."

Laughing, he scratches his head with a raised arm. "Ha... I understand. The whole species thing can be hard to bring up." He nods while listening, "Phoenix," he pauses, face deforming with the effort of scouring his memory, "I've never heard of your people," he smiles slightly, "But Phoenix... It has a nice ring to it."
He blinks a few times in confusion, "Roasted..? Is that a way humans cook chickens?" he sighs, "I met a chicken once. She was great. I don't fully understand why humans eat them. I think chickens are magnificent creatures, but no worries, I won't name-call." Seth beats his wings in opposite rhythm to Kiran, wings treading air on inaudible upbeats. "Ah. I'm more of a late-night person myself. Usually there's no one else outside in the dark. Gives me freedom to fly around without people gawking or staring," he explains with an unintentional poise. "Not that I mind you being here, though." The fresh scent of dewdrops wafts throughout the undisturbed air, "And the moon... Well... It energizes me, if you know what I mean. Something about my species—Pegasus, if I haven't already mentioned—resonates with it. Religion and other folklore says that we originated from the creativity of the moon god," he laughs, "I don't really subscribe to religion, but I can't deny the moon's power, I guess."
He thinks momentarily, then looks up, eyes glinting with innate curiosity. "Um... You mentioned sunlight and being 'roasted'. Is it safe to assume that Phoenixes have to do with fire? I'd like to hear more about it, if you don't mind. Maybe it will help relax you." Seth gestures with his hand, "Might as well move around while we're here," he says with a few thrusts of his snowy wings, propelling himself further upwards into the night sky. LAIKA OF THQ

Kiran wasn't one to have prejudices, but the mention of the moon god had him wondering if it was the same one that attempted to taint a phoenix's rebirth with evil and lead them to break phoenix law. What the pegasus described didn't smell of malfeasance, so he'd just assume there was more than one moon god in the world, or else one of their religions was wrong. He didn't like dwelling on that idea, so he'd just keep in mind to be a little wary. The kid seemed pure enough, but perhaps some thing were engrained into him whether he liked it or not. Losing someone close to the consequences on bad rebirths and moon god shenanigans, perhaps he was too close to the situation to reliably pass judgements.
As the boy bathes in moonlight suggested they continue their flight, he nodded and followed closely, finding company to be a great distraction. "Yeah, phoenixes are pretty fiery. We were created and been blessed by the sun god, so we draw strength from its rays. We're like opposites," the tattooed boy joked, a brash smile creeping onto his lips. He was partially serious, but he meant no threat or shade. It was more of an observation. "I guess our most obvious trait immortality. Rebirth by ash and flame. It's pretty handy," Kiran grinned idly doing a barrel roll in the air to the left and basking in the wind against his skin. While he generally disliked night time, he couldn't deny that the silence and privacy it afforded was nice. "Generally we're pretty fearless, since even if we take a fatal blow we just turn to ash and an egg forms to give us life again. I mean, we do have some tricky rebirth trials and high expectations from our leader, but otherwise we can do what needs done no matter how dangerous. Not that we're easy to kill, mind you," he explained, obviously proud of his species. "That comes with its own...hazards. Others feel less bad about trying to use us for alchemy ingredients or other nasty ideas since they have no death on their conscience, but for the most part no one has tried for a long time." Now Seth knew a super simple, watered down version about the glorious firebirds, but it was plenty of knowledge to work from.
Had he met any of Seth's kind in the war? He couldn't recall. It was hectic back then, and who knew. Maybe the pegasus people were too isolated to take part at the time, or maybe they were even too new. Plenty of new species had evolved in the last three hundred and twenty odd years. The fluffy white wings and .l;op0- horn from his head were interesting, but was that all an alatum was? Maybe he should ask. Perhaps if he made sure, he could recall if he knew any in the past. "So...phoenixes are birds," the teen commented, momentarily turning into a giant, human sized bird painted the colors of the sun and flame, and clothed in impressively lengthy feathers dancing with fire. The full transformation was only a moment before he reverted back to his human form with just the wings remaining. "What is an Alatum? Are they from Mistere?"

He glances at his hands, observing the dewy condensation formed by the thin layer of heat enveloping his figure, "Yeah… Like opposites, I suppose,"
He pauses, slowing his speed considerably, "Immortality…" "That’s… Amazing! Despite the implications, of course. I bet there are many too-wise people, cursed by apathy. But, I guess that’s what religion is for… To give you something to live for."
He covers his mouth coyly and teases, "Not easy to kill? I bet on night, like tonight, a good splash of water could end one of-" he interjects himself, "Wow, never mind, that was cryptic. Forget I said that."
Grimacing, he responds gravely, "I couldn’t imagine the type of person it would take to imprison and repeatedly kill someone. I mean, Phoenixes must still feel pain, right?"
He chuckles, gawking in awe at Kiran’s transformation, "Impressive!," "But I hope this isn’t considered one-upping you." Cracking a small, excited smile, his wings slow considerably, whipping air in unseen cyclones as his horn begins absorbing residual moonlight and reciprocating it tenfold. His fingernails gather an unseen energy and from them—spreading throughout his body—silver light replaces his skin and clothes. Melding and lengthening, arms and legs extend daintily, extending into thin, graceful horse legs, complete with hooves, made of pearl. His torso and neck extend into thin, long, show-horse-like proportions. Hair and a strategically folded (and hidden) tail extend and turn from a familiar cyan to a less saturated powder blue while a human face reshapes into a horse-like snout. Silver, moon-rock colored fur covers his body, reflective and glossy. His wings, now much larger, glide effortlessly in the nighttime air, supported by glimmers of moonlight, unnoticeable by passing gazes. His forehead gemstone, an eclipse-red ruby pulsates with magical energy, before its light surrounding his horsey-figure and returning him to his previous state.
"Alatum… We’re horses, roughly, in the eyes of humans… Horses with wings… Which is where the shorthand term, Pegasi comes from. Actually, I suppose Alicorn would be more fitting… Considering my…" he gestures to his foot-long, gently twisting pearl horn, "Horn…"
He stretches his arms in an unshowy flourish to avoid his wingstrokes. "And no. We originate from an island, about a day’s flight off the coast. Well, if you’re as fast as an Alatum, that is," he playfully jeers, "Island life is calm, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see other Alatum around the world. Especially since we can fly. We’re taught by our village elders that our 'moon god'," he emphasizes with air quotes, "Tells us to hurt no one… physically at least. To remain mischievous, playful, pacifist. To not subscribe to any larger form of authority or institution. To reject the horrors of the outside world." He coughs. "Or something like that, at least." He looks down, at the park and its dimly lit pathways, "I went on a tangent. Sorry about that, I guess teachers are right when they say I’m talkative." He quiets briefly, "Well. Before I left, I was in line to become a religious-leader of-sorts. I ran away, of course… But! Tell me about yourself. What was your probably-longer-than-mine life like before enrolling in the academy?" LAIKA OF THQ

"Oh wow. Majestic as heck," Kiran commented, watching the display with wide eyes. Yup, he'd never seen anything like that! It was very rare for a soul as old as him to see something new, but dang if it didn't just happen. It was beautiful, and he was glad to see it. He was also glad to know more, and somewhat comforted that Seth's moon god didn't sound much like the one from his religion at all. Mischief and pacifism and rejection. Not nearly the violent and criminal moon god.
The boy sure could chatter. As Kiran flapped his wings and glided along with all the ease and grace of floating in a lazy river, his eyes also wandered to the park below. It'd been so long since he'd flown, he was surprised how fast he'd gotten so far from the dorm window he'd popped out of. While the park was mostly empty, he did spot some vandals with his sharp eyes, as well a a random jogger and some teens having a secret rendezvous. Mistopolis was truly a city that never truly slept.
Now the almost-priest was asking the inevitable question he tried to ignore. He could lie and make it sound like he was merely a hatchling, and that his current appearance was his oldest age in human years as well, but Kiran was never one to like to lie. Lying was the moon god's business, along with thieving and cheating and murder. He could be brusk and say he didn't want to talk about it, but Seth had been so forthcoming about his species and beliefs that it seemed wrong not to reciprocate. Perhaps if he didn't go into great detail, it wouldn't trigger too many old feels. Think of it like listening to the lessons about the war in history-- not that they were very accurate.
"I've been around a while. I'm from Hisakawa, where I have a pretty good set up. But staying stagnate in one place makes people like me kinda antsy, so we often go back to school like I am now. I guess you could call me a veteran, since I did fight in the Ancient War. It's nice how familiar the peace before the war and after the war is, though a lot has changed," the phoenix chuckled here, enjoying his understatement. The evolution of human shapeshifting and talents for all species had been quite a shock, but he thoroughly enjoyed it. It was enough to distract him from the horrors he'd lived through during the war. "When I say it out loud, it sounds like my life has been pretty boring, but really it hasn't. When you basically can't die, you can do all sorts of dangerous and interesting things to take up the time. Plus, it seems like someone always has a job for us, since they don't have to worry about us not making it back. Very lucrative."
