welcome to Eldritch Academy
In a world of myths and mysteries, the pinnacle of the magical academies exists. Eldritch Academy offers education to all ages and species but specializes in the study and training of one's innate mystical capabilities, often called Eldritch Energies, Powers, or Unknowns, but more formally known as their Talent. However, tensions run high with the nations only holding a fragile peace as the Talents that rival the epitomes of technology change the balance of power.
With the more recent uprising of evil Shades and introduction of combat-oriented programs into Talent-focused schools, nations grow more aggressive towards one another. The demand for resources grows, and skirmishes at the border of Arka and Mistere become more frequent. Monsters run into the nations from the Wildes, terrorizing villages and cities. The need for trained or in-training Hunters and Guardians has never been more urgent.

Ryse Azar walked with nervousness through the hallway, making her way past classrooms. Most of them were empty, as class was over. But some of them, just like her, had students that were there for extra help on their classwork. Which was the same reason why she herself was walking to professor Theo's classroom. The sun was setting, casting long shadows in front of her. She carried no textbooks in her hands, as the class hadn't required a material book. She had a notebook, however, which was filled with notes she'd written on the audio book she had been assigned. Even though she'd asked for help from the professor, she was still a little nervous about meeting him for tutoring.
Reaching the door, Ryse reached for the handle. Hesitated. Then quietly opened the door.
"Mr. Theo?" She asked as she stepped inside. She hoped he was there. The professor said he would be.

Contrary to the scene she saw upon poking her head in, Theo really had been expecting her...at some point. He was also terribly easily distracted, so the whole arranged meeting had flown out of his head after the devouring of his muffin. He sat at his desk, which wasn't done up like a bed for once, tinkering with something about the size of his fist. It was a golden, shimmering statue of an egg, it seemed. There were carvings in it, and something rattled inside. But you see, the tricky thing was that this artifact was a puzzle. A dangerous puzzle. He knew all about them and how difficult they were to open without blowing up, but the treasure they protected made his body quiver in excitement. It was a marvel that it was as old as it was. Pre-war, yet it was so intricate and sophisticated. One wrong move once the delicate levers and sliders had started to move, and it'd just destroy his office/apartment...
"Mr. Theo?"
The instructor startled a little. He'd been so inthralled, he'd missed the click of the knob. Frosty eyes darted up, brightening in recognition for just an instant before darkening in realization. One slider moved a hair too far when he looked up and startled. That click. That small, dream murdering click...and subsequent clicks. He had about twenty seconds. Jumping up, he decided there was no use worrying the student, nor was it smart to put her in danger. This was a learning experience. One best viewed from far away...
"Oof, don't call me 'Mister', please! Makes me sound old..." Theo replied in the calmest tone he possessed, walking toward her at a possibly alarming speed. Reaching her, an arm reached out and spun her back toward the door, remaining lightly to herd her back into the hall. "I'm glad you could make it! I absolutely hate having class or tutoring indoors, so let's head outside, yeah? And don't mind the explosion, it's fine!" he laughed too brightly, full of anxiety as he scurried them just far enough. With a loud crack and a sound remarkably like a murderous rooster, there was a loud popping noise followed by the splintering of wood. The 'smoke' was comprised of countless yellow feathers, as was obvious upon a glance back since now the room was filled with them and some even puffed out into the hall. "Nnngh..." he groaned ruefully, but it was what it was.
"Now, Ryse...what do you need help with?" the exploration expert asked, trying to move things right along so they could forget his little accident.

Ryse blinked in confusion, looking over the professor's shoulder to where bright yellow feathers now filled the classroom and puffed out into the hall. The room was a mess. The desk was splintered into pieces, and the floor looked as though a chicken had been murdered there. The rest of the room, from what she could tell, was more or less in the same devastated state.
'Oh dear...'
How could so much destruction come from such a small object?
"Are... are you sure it's okay, Professor?" She asked hesitantly, glancing from the teacher, back to the room again. She didn't know what that object was - or rather, had been - but she knew from the mess the classroom was in, it would've probably caused harm to both herself and Professor Theo had they been near it. Perhaps she could ask her mother what it was; the older Phoenix had a good memory for as long as she'd lived for, and no doubt she'd probably seen something like it before.
Ryse wanted to be respectful towards the teacher, as he was... well.... a teacher. But seeing as he didn't seem to like being called "Mr", maybe "Professor" was a better fit?
Upon being prompted what she needed help with, Ryse turned her attention back to the matter at hand. "Oh, uh, so I'm having trouble with learning how to identify objects from different regions of Mistere." She fiddled with her shirt sleeves nervously. "How can I tell when an object is from Elderbrook versus Glasthearth? Would there be differences considering they're from two different regions? Or would they look the same?"
Differences between two different countries, such as Mistere and Hisakawa was easy; they each had their own distinct culture and traditions, therefore the objects would reflect the culture depending on where they came from. She knew that regions within a country could be diverse and different from one region to the next, but identifying those differences was where she was having difficulty.
Glancing back into the room again, she knew that there was no way they would be continuing their conversation there. And it would be strange to continue it in the hallway... the Professor did say he preferred to have class outside. Maybe he had a different place in mind where they could talk?

"Oh yeaaah. It's fiiiine," he waved it off, though he was internally crying about all the work he'd have to do to reclaim his office and living space from the damage and impressive amount of feathers. All the work he'd have to do before he could sleep tonight. Where would he put his mattress now? The desk had been perfect. He liked to sleep above the floor level...an old habit.
"Hm. Good question. I might be able to shed some light on it...let's head outside," suggested the professor, also disliking that title, but letting it slide. He supposed some students might have trouble breaking tradition and calling him by simply his first name. Maybe it seemed disrespectful. This teaching thing was no walking the park, man. More like strolling through a field of landmines. Professor sounded so fancy....too fancy for a basically homeless man that just blew up his classroom.
Once they escaped the building, he lead her out into the courtyard near the tree his first class had been held. Climbing up into the tree -- you know, like normal teachers do -- Theo retrieved a stowed quilt and laid it out, seating himself and wait for her to do so as well. Let the tutoring commence! "Alright, now your question doesn't have a simple answer, really. It depends on what kind of items you're finding, how old they are, stuff like that. Can you give me maybe an example of what you're thinking?"

Ryse raised a curious eyebrow slightly at seeing her teacher climbing a tree to retrieve a colorful quilt; one she recognized from when Theo had began the exploration class. She remembered that she and the other classmates had met the professor in much the same fashion; he'd revealed himself by jumping out of that same tree if she recalled. Maybe he liked being in trees? She wouldn't judge him for it, though. Sometimes she liked being in the treetops as well. It was relaxing to her, being alone with nothing but the wind and nature around her.
Smiling a little, she sat on the quilt, running her hands over the soft fabric absentmindedly. The sun was almost gone by this time, and she felt the yearning for its light as she did every night when the star disappeared for the night; an emptiness that only went away when the sun rose again in the morning. It was one of the reasons she woke up at the crack of dawn. That and she loved seeing the sun rise, greeting the new day with its warmth and its light. But sitting here under the darkening sky wasn't so bad. It was definitely much better than being in the classroom, that was for sure.
"Hm..." She hummed, tapping her fingers against the quilt in thought. "Well, what if for example I found two mugs. Both from before the War. How would those differ between the two regions? And also, would the mugs have similar differences if they were from a more recent time period? Say, a few years ago?" Not that she'd actually found such objects. She hadn't really been focused on going exploring when she had other classes that required studying and such. She was sure her mother had a few items that were from before the War, now that she thought about it. Maybe she could bring them to the teacher to examine. Temporarily, of course.

"Hmmmm..." Theo deliberated, thinking it over. A mug, eh? "It would depend if they were actually made in each part of the country you're asking about. Assuming they were locally made..ok. I'll set out an scenario, but without actual mugs to look at, this is all hypothetical, okay?" the teacher began, lounging back on the quilt and placing his hands behind his head. Sure, not something a professional instructor would do, but he wasn't the usual teacher. He was just a guy who needed a break from roaming the world of Skiagis, a little grounding time to figure out what to do next. Icy eyes stared up into the darkening sky, though he was more likely seeing these mugs his brain imagined.
"Glasthearth is predominantly farming country. It has many diverse areas that could affect the design, but since back then it'd have been made with wood, it would have originated from the small forests near the flood plains, most likely. A good, strong wood. It would probably have designs closely related to farming, and also the monarchy that was in power over Mistere until recently," postulated the explorer, almost impressed with himself. he'd learned a lot in his short years here. Granted, it'd been all he'd done to keep him mind occupied, but still. He sounded like a regular scholar! "Elderbrook relies heavily on rivers for trade and to water livestock. Its mug might be carved from a material not native to Elderbrook, but it'll probably have boat designs and livestock carved into it. It'll share a monarchy symbol or two, since it's the same country and that'd have been common for the time period. Of course, I'm speaking of older days. More recently with growing technology and even more trading going on, it'd be very hard to tell mugs apart aside from the stamp on the bottom of the mug. Haha!"

Ryse looked at the teacher for a few moments, blinking in amazement at how easily he could say so much information and give such detail seemingly without even thinking about it. It proved that he was truly an expert in his field.
Then it finally clicked in her brain that she should probably be writing this down, and hurriedly grabbed a pen and drew a few pictures of a mug from each of the two regions on a blank page in her notebook, jotting down notes alongside the drawings. Notes such as the geography of each region, symbols that would appear on items made in those regions, and the type of material the items would be made of. If she didn't have some sort of visual, there was no way she would be able to remember what Theo was telling her. The fading light made it a bit difficult to see exactly what she was writing, but that didn't matter. She could always rewrite it later.
"I wish I had a memory like yours, Professor." She said lightheartedly as she scribbled down some notes, a smile on her face. Her blue eyes danced with amusement. "It would make learning this stuff easier that's for sure." As she finished writing, she turned her attention back to her teacher. "Have you been all over Mistere and the other countries? What sort of things have you found while traveling?"
Perhaps she was getting slightly off topic, but this kind of stuff was interesting, which was why she'd signed up for Theo's class in the first place. Archeology and exploration took into account the history of the places the items that were found, the geography, and the culture depending on the time period. History was one of her favorite subjects, even if she struggled with remembering dates and the like. But it was clear that the adult was knowledgeable about the subject, which meant he was the perfect person to ask questions.

"No you don't..." he muttered to himself under his breath to her memory comment, having just a moment of bitterness before he blotted it out of his face and tone altogether. Being able to remember everything that came in life for the most part had so far been little more than a curse. Sure, he could remember maps, how to get to various secret areas, tones of facts and details about items in the present and past...but that also meant he remembered a whole other world of pain before being brought here. He remembered how many times he'd lost everything and had no choice but to pick up and start over. There wasn't a treasure that existed in this world or the other one that could compare to the people he'd lost, and lives were things that he couldn't dig up again. At least that was one perk of treasures buried in ruins and caves. The civilization might have fallen or some tragedy might have claimed them, but their valuable items could just be found again.
"I have!" Theo chirped, as if he hadn't stepped into his hidden somber side for a second. The grin on his face was genuine. "Arka was not much fun...too cold, too harsh, the ground is so hard...to be honest, they don't leave much behind if they are exiled outside the few towns and cities they have. Even in the towns its basic carpentry. Anything I've found there was simple...not much design over functionality. Only things to use in every day life. I assume the valuables are held in the Capital," he told his student, being candid about his dislike for the place. It was boring and dangerous, and the only city they had worth visiting was just the Capital since the other place not inhabited by the poor and oppressed was an entire city dedicated to their academy.
Moving on, now he got to his favorite place in this world. "Hisakawa is a goldmine for exploration and archaeology, Ryse," he began, eyes bright with excitement. He loved this stuff. The jungles and forests are full of ruins from tribes and clans that have either been wiped out or moved toward the center of the country. There are plants and animals there that still haven't been discovered. I would know, because almost all the artifacts and treasures of there are either in ruins painted with warnings about horrible monsters, or the treasure itself is decorated with the images. In fact, that puzzle egg that blew up my classroom was from a Hisakawa ruin, said to be guarded by a great chakakaka...which is apparently a yellow feathered bird..."

Ryse had far better hearing than most people, being -- as much as she would hate to admit it -- part canine. And so, she was able to hear what the professor had muttered. Even from her position lying on her stomach on the quilt facing away from Theo, looking at her notes, she could tell from the tone of the teacher's voice that it was something very personal for him. Her smile faded into a slight frown, and the amusement died from her eyes as she processed the words.
What did he mean by that? Did he know something he'd rather forget? Did he do something he'd rather not have done? Did he...
Before she could delve too deep into her thoughts of what the professor might have or have not done, she shoved the questions away. It was none of her business. And it was obvious she wasn't supposed to have heard him. So instead, she pretended as though she hadn't. Just like she did whenever she overheard her mother crying when she was supposed to be too far away to hear.
"My mom and I are from Hisakawa." She said as the teacher mentioned their homeland, turning her head and beaming brightly at him. She loved the forests and the greenery of Hisakawa. However, she was finding that she liked Mistere just as much; the culture and the variety was something she didn't see back at home. Even though their home country had their own academy, they both thought it would be better if she were to attend Eldritch Academy instead.
"You and my mom should go exploring sometime. She could tell you all about the hidden places nobody except her knows about, haha!" Ryse had never explored around the country, but the stories her mother had told her never ceased to keep her interested--
Wait...
Did he just say that the Great Chakakaka was a... yellow feathered bird?
Freezing, her eyes widened in realization. "You mean, that was..." She made a motion with her hands, indicating the explosion that had happened, and the yellow feathers still covering every surface of the classroom at this very moment.
'Well, at least I have something interesting to write home to mom about.'

As if his already insanely bright blue eyes could somehow get any brighter, they did when she mentioned she was from Hisakawa and that her mother might know some hidden places he'd yet to find. "Ooooh, yes. I'd love to meet your mother and go exploring. Maybe one day...on a break or something..." he mused, smiling to himself as his imagination ran wild. A ruin at the bottom of a murky swamp, guarded by the large Shihugafu of ancient legend...finding a pristine and dry antechamber chocked full of exciting riddles and traps so that the main room chocked full of priceless relics and treasures was worth it. A grand story would be born!
Snapping back to reality, he thought he heard her say something else. "What what was?" he asked with a befuddled expression, only to blink and start laughing. "Oh! Right, the feather egg grenade. Yeah, I think those were Chakakaka feathers. Those things are said to be immortal, so if there were feathers in there that means they existed all those years ago, and probably still do. I'm sure I've heard their screeches near the ruin far east, but I've never seen one full on. Perhaps if I was more of a species specialist and not an archaeologist, I could be the one to confirm all those crazy animals exist. But, alas, I'm just there for the cool stuff and the story that goes with it."

Ryse laughed a little at seeing the excitement on his face. She never thought she'd see someone so happy to talk about old dusty things other than herself. "Oh, um, Professor I was wondering if you could answer another question of mine."
She sat up and turned around so she faced him, showing him a page in her notebook covered with writing and illustrations while lighting a small flame in her palm so the teacher could read it. The sun had fully gone down by this time, and the moon was rising into the sky, stars twinkling overhead. While her normal fire abilities were dampened due to the absence of the sun, she could still light small flames like she was doing now. "According to the audio book, it wasn't until after the War that culture and such really flourished, because of magic being introduced and the species growing into communities and such. Would you be able to see evidence of this in objects that we find?"
She hummed in thought as she tried to think of an example. "Let's say we have the same mug from before. If there's one from the Pre War era, and one from...... I guess.... 50 years after that, how would they be different? Both from Mistere." Giving the professor a specific country rather than asking the question in general would maybe make answering the question a bit easier. At least, she hoped it would.

As she showed her notebook, Theo looked over it intently, though couldn't read any of her writings. As usual, the man that couldn't read had only pictures to go off of, but usually that was fine. At first he was worried reading the pages would play a large part in understanding what she was asking him, but her explanation was clear enough. He should be able to handle it.
"That's a little tougher," he started, expression deep in thought. Pursing his lips repeatedly, he slowly gathered his thoughts. "Before the war, most species didn't have humanoid forms to shapeshift into like we are right now. Only the species already humanoid could blend into human societies before the war. Everyone was reasonably segregated if they could be, for unfortunately obvious reasons. That said, the mugs during this time would probably only reference humans. A mug from any other species would be carved very blatantly with figures in their native form, assuming they even had a use for a mug... In addition, some mugs might even depict other non-humanoid species in nearby areas as monsters, depending on relations between the groups. Some humans embraced getting along with other species while others were very cruel to them, so I can't offer an exact explanation, I'm afraid. It's all very complicated," he ended his first half of his explanation with a dry laugh. "Now, post war, we'd start seeing those mugs lose any animosity toward other species, as well as species depicted in humanoid forms alongside the humans themselves. We'd also start to see new ideas for decorations as all the cultures began mixing together and getting along.." he trailed off, feeling as though he wasn't doing a good job teaching this material. Theo was a hands on guy. Hypotheticals started to get muddy for the simple man. "You and I will have to take a mug-hunting field trip and put this talk to practice. Maybe see how accurate my teaching is!" the black haired instructor chuckled, able to poke fun at himself. He wasn't a very serious individual most of the time...which is probably why he was the weirdest teacher on campus.

Ryse nodded as she focused on what the teacher was saying. She wrote a few notes down in her notebook, trying to be an attentive student. But even with Theo's explanations - as clear as they were - it was a little confusing. "Thank you for all of your help, Professor. I agree, maybe a field trip would be better. Being able to physically see what you're describing would help a lot, haha!"
She chuckled a little. "Okay, so I know that Hisakawa seems to be your favorite place for exploring, but what's the best thing you've found? The rarest item? Or maybe the most colorful one?" She loved hearing stories about trips that others had taken. It always made her day more interesting.
After a moment of asking the questions, however, she suddenly remembered that she had a test the next day. Which she should probably study for. Her eyes widening, she hurriedly gathered her notebook and pencil and stood up. The teenager gave a bow of respect to Theo. "Thank you again. You've helped me understand all of this a little better, and I learned a lot. But please forgive me as I have to leave now. I have to study for an exam tomorrow, and it's getting late. Also I'm... sorry about your office getting destroyed. If you need help fixing it let me know. I hope we can have another tutoring session in the future." Hopefully the teacher's property didn't get blown up the next time...
With a quick "Goodbye Professor!" and a wave, Ryse quickly made her way back to her dorm. She wanted to ace this test, so she'd better get to studying as soon as she could. Which meant flashcards. And coffee. Lots of coffee.
