What is UNIT?
What is UNIT?
UNIT is a theoretical and informal underground group of criminals & criminals-to-be that are being assembled by personal invitation of Paris - each of them is an individual of TALENT that stands out as a useful asset, scoped out specifically because of their skillsets, ability to perform a vital function within a team, and especially because of their innate TALENT. One could say that TALENT is the core of UNIT; it is both their objective and their means of seeing that objective to fruition. Unlike slightly more "open" and "obvious" organizations like mafias and gangs, UNIT operates entirely underground and in the shadows, hiding in plain sight and acting with the utmost discretion usually to cause disruption and acquire the objects of their desires. Joining is done solely through invitation after a careful vetting process and it has no formal structure, with Paris acting as the loose director and head of the group.
Each member of the group fulfills some sort of specific role, with room for both individuals whose TALENT lends itself to combat, infiltration and sabotage, and those who are more focused on providing indirect support, gathering information and otherwise fulfilling logistical or observational needs. Members are recruited from all walks of life, from simple travelers, civilians possessed of TALENT, or academy students - of whom make up the bulk of UNIT's numbers.
Whereas many criminal groups often act with the motivation of acquiring money or (in the case of some domestic terrorist organizations) bringing about change through radical means, these desires are entirely secondary to UNIT's primary purpose, but are often acquired in the process of pursuing their primary goals. If money is the object of your desires, it can be yours - if knowledge is what you seek, UNIT will provide you with the means to acquire it. And if power is what you seek, you'll fit right in.
So what is UNIT's objective?
UNIT has one primary objective behind its formation, and that is TALENT. UNIT seeks to acquire the means to forcefully & artificially awaken and develop TALENT in individuals and to surpass the natural boundaries of what is normally possible. The elimination of limitations and the ability to offer a full degree of control over one's natural abilities is the desire, although to what eventual end is not entirely ascertained. In addition, they desire to keep this knowledge out of the hands of anybody else who might seek to acquire it.
To this end, UNIT was founded. Their primarily means of achieving their endgame is to accumulate influence and power in the shadows and use that to infiltrate research & development facilities and labs focused around the study of TALENTs, taking what knowledge they can for themselves, taking control where they can and completely ruining whatever they cannot gain control of for their own purposes. After all, they who control the awakening and knowledge of supernatural abilities has the potential to control absolutely everything else. As a result, the Eldritch Academy and its counterparts, particularly in Arka, are being used as both coverups for UNIT's members and the prime targets of infiltration, disruption and espionage. As the bastions of the TALENTED, it's the logical conclusion.
UNIT is also involved in other shady parts of the criminal underworld on the road to accomplishing their goals, however; assassinations, hostile takeovers or the elimination of mafias and gangs, and the seizure & destruction of government materials are just a few of the things they get up to in the process. As a result, there's no shortage of things to do and trouble to get involved in, for those willing to get their hands dirty and make a little (or a lot) of cash on the side using their TALENT.
Despite all of this, UNIT has little care for what its members do, so long as their actions don't get them revealed and don't come into conflict with the group's primary reason for existing.
Who can join, and what's the appeal?
Anyone, theoretically. Any character with a useful skillset or a TALENT of just about any kind could potentially become a member, if the interest is there; this is of course not limited to combat-oriented characters, but also very much support-oriented characters who aren't kitted out for fighting.
If you're looking for a good way of loosely organizing a group of characters to interact with on a more regular basis, potentially with internal rivalries and conflicts within the group itself (as every character will likely have a different reason or ulterior motive for joining up) and/or an excuse to potentially engage in conflict with characters outside the group, or a reason to be put in hostile IC-interactions, this might just be for you. There's something for your character here whether you want to engage in combat-oriented roleplay, simple slice-of-life, or anything else, really - and, additionally, it gives a good opportunity, IC-reason & catalyst for further talent-development. Whether conflict is your style, regular group roleplays, or you just enjoy somewhat more plot-oriented character development & interaction (of which there will be plenty), UNIT is a solid choice. If you like the idea but not the thought of actually getting your character's hands dirty, that's fine too; support roles are, as mentioned, always important and allow your character to assist at minimal risk of being discovered.
If you hate being involved in organizations with a strict ranking hierarchy, then congratulations, this is also for you since there's hardly any of that here.
It also gives you a more ready selection of characters to do things with if you enjoy playing evil feckers and still want to be able to do your own thing, not worry about always having to be in conflict with other characters, and not be tied strongly to the group's main narrative all the time.
