welcome to Eldritch Academy
In a world of myths and mysteries, the pinnacle of the magical academies exists. Eldritch Academy offers education to all ages and species but specializes in the study and training of one's innate mystical capabilities, often called Eldritch Energies, Powers, or Unknowns, but more formally known as their Talent. However, tensions run high with the nations only holding a fragile peace as the Talents that rival the epitomes of technology change the balance of power.
With the more recent uprising of evil Shades and introduction of combat-oriented programs into Talent-focused schools, nations grow more aggressive towards one another. The demand for resources grows, and skirmishes at the border of Arka and Mistere become more frequent. Monsters run into the nations from the Wildes, terrorizing villages and cities. The need for trained or in-training Hunters and Guardians has never been more urgent.

It was getting so difficult to breathe these days as she could feel her lungs weaken from the over saturation of oxygen in her blood. Several days before the Flurry had grown lethargic, able to be seen lazing around the campus as if she was some caged circus side show instead of a free beast. Moving? Had begun to hurt her as a body meant for high altitude was slowly
crushed beneath the thicker air of this one.
If one was watching at this exact moment, they'd witness the female spread her large wings for the fifth time this day and attempt pitifully to take to the air. Jiyu only came crashing back down, barely catching herself with her telekinesis. Apart from the fact her injured wing was not done healing, the Flurry had simply grown too weakened for flight. "Damn it!" she
smacked her tail into a nearby tree making it rattle as she seethed, head turned towards the sky thinking she had the area to herself. "I'm going to die here, I'm really going to die here." she lay down on the cold ground, stuffing her muzzle against it with a grunt. She was fond of this incarnation, even finding her mother within it once more, she didn't want to
move onto her next life this time. "I screwed up waiting for my wing to heal, I should have left for E'olham the second I crashed, now I don't have enough strength left to make the journey on foot." she had never taken this long to heal, but it was not surprising. Jiyu knew she had been doomed either way, it was just nice to trick herself that she had at any point
had a path that could have led to survival.

As his luck usually went, Theo just happened to be strolling by when he heard something or someone nearby lamenting. Did they say something about dying? He was naturally a helpful man, but this drew him in even quicker than usual. His classes were done already for the day, and even his tutoring sessions were wrapped up early since several of the other professors had assigned a crazy amount of term papers and exams. That was fine with Theo, though. He enjoyed being able to wander around as he pleased for a chance. It seemed he'd get more wrapped up than usual in this debacle, though.
It was the dragon from that one day! The one that crashed right in the middle of campus and made all of them (no, just him) think they were being roasted to death. She'd hurt her wings pretty badly, so it was nice to see she'd mostly recovered from that, yet there seemed to be something even bigger and worse looming doom over the....Furry? No, wait...it was Flurry. Yeah. Flurry. Jiyu the Flurry.
He treaded nearer her on quiet feet, arctic hued eyes filled to the brim with concern while also doing their best to be comforting. "Hey there. What's this about dying?" he asked, stepping around to stand in front of her lowered face. He crouched a little. "Is there anything I can do to help? I'm a skilled traveller, maybe I can help you get home. I've been to E'olham several times... Sorry, I couldn't help but overhear..." he trailed, scratching the back of his head sheepishly.

Ryse, for once, wasn't holding textbooks bundled in her arms. Her hands were free, and she was walking at a leisurely pace. She'd left her books in her dorm room, and was taking the time to relax for the day. The air was still a bit chilly, so she was wearing pants and a long sleeved shirt, but it was beginning to get warmer. She knew that within a month the snow would be nearly gone, and she would be able to wear short sleeved shirts again. Her mind was preoccupied with thoughts about home, and how her family was doing. Was her mother safe? Had the house been repaired yet? It'd been a week and she still hadn't received a letter yet. Not that this wasn't uncommon; she usually got letters from home every one or two weeks. It was only a matter of waiting until she got another one.
A strange scent broke the teenager from her thoughts, and she blinked in confusion. The scent smelled vaguely familiar. Humming in thought, she began walking in the direction it was coming from, and she picked up on another scent, this one belonging to Professor Theo.
Curious now, Ryse followed the scent trail until she began hearing voices. One of them being one she didn't quite recognize. The other being the professor's. As she got closer, she saw the white dragon lying on the ground, Theo next to her, and it clicked in her mind. The scent belonged to the dragon that had crashed in the courtyard. She'd seen her around campus a few times but hadn't really talked to her. She recalled the dragon mentioning its name was something that started with a J..... Jasmine? No. Julia? No, that wasn't it either. It was a foreign sounding name. Jiyu? Yeah, that was it. Jiyu.
Theo was talking to the dragon, who seemed to not be doing so well. Maybe it was sick, or still injured. She didn't want to interrupt the conversation, so she quietly hid behind a tree (the same one Jiyu had smacked with her tail earlier) and listened curiously. Theo was talking about getting the dragon home to E'olham. So Jiyu was homesick, then. Ryse knew the feeling well.

With her ever weakening state the senses of the beast had dulled so much that she no longer even truly noted that they had dulled expect when something forced her to realize this. A voice rang out and it was so hard to figure out what was being said! The numbs on the side of her head lifted and moved, trying to focus on the sound as her head lifted to attempt focusing her gaze onto him, it was clearly difficult for her. Jiyu couldn't believe how careless she had been to let someone else hear! If they figured out what was wrong with her they would also know how to kill any other flurry they came into contact with! She had to protect her flock, letting other species figure out that her kind could no longer live down here could be the end of them.
Quickly she looked wild as if she was going to attack him again, everything screaming she had suddenly become aggressive again, until her body collapsed in a heap on the ground again, gasping for breathe. Jiyu begrudgingly realized she didn't even have the strength to find somewhere she could crawl away to in order to die without her body being discovered. Glaring at Theo through hazy optics that already possessed a glaze over them she hissed out slightly. Eventually her eyes closed and she let her head tilt back as it laid against the ground. "It's as I said. I'm dying." she grunted slightly, trying to push herself into a more dignified position but failing miserably. "Ever traversed any portion of Dorahiln's Spine?" It was such difficult terrain she had only ever seen other species take airships over the range, which was easy for her kind to hide from. Where she needed to get back to in order to survive, it was a dangerous trip across nearly the entire country, into a place believed inhospitable. "Because unless you can get me halfway up the highest mountain of that range, you can do nothing." if she got that close? Even her limited and weakened telepathy may be able to reach out to her flock who would be strong enough to take her back into the peaks to recover.
She doubted it, and if he was going to try the Flurry was fairly sure it would ensure that she would not be the only one to die.

The black haired man backed up a half shuffle as she did her best to seem intimidating and dangerous, holding his hands up in the universal sign for 'I mean no harm'. "Easy, easy, I'm just here to help," he assured her, stubborn enough to stay despite her obvious displeasure. Couldn't she just relax? She'd been around campus for a little while, and anyone had yet to try and kill her. Once more of her strength left and she deflated pitifully, Theo relaxed again as well.
"I have actually," he answered, peeking over at Ryse as she approached and hid. If she peeked at them again, he'd motion her to join him and the sickly dragoness. "I've crossed Dorahiln's Spine a couple times, since I didn't have the shard to sail or fly. It's tough, but I wouldn't be the exploration instructor if I couldn't travel everywhere, right?" Theo asked with a grin, knowing the situation was dire but trying to keep everyone's spirits up either way. It would be a shame if someone from such an interesting and beautiful species died because she couldn't get back home. He wasn't a fan of death and dying, but who really was? "You're a little big for me to carry in this form, though. I don't suppose you can take on that human one you showed us before? I'm sure I can get you home before it's too late...or I'll at least give it my best shot.

Ryse stiffened as she saw Jiyu almost attack the teacher, her eyes widening as she thought Theo was about to be bitten. But she relaxed, giving a quiet sigh of relief as she saw that this didn't happen. Instead the dragon seemed to lose her energy, falling to the ground yet again. The teenager winced in sympathy; the creature really looked to be very ill.
The professor spotted her and beckoned her forward. Was she in trouble? She'd just been caught spying on him and Jiyu. Glancing at the dragon warily, she carefully made her way over to the two. What did he want her to do? "Y-yes... Professor?" She asked nervously. She didn't know how the dragon would react now that she was there as well. Would she try to attack her too? Ryse certainly hoped not.
Professor Theo spoke, saying that he'd crossed a mountain range named Dorahiln's Spine on several occasions. Which was more times than she'd done so, which was none. She'd never been to any other regions of Mistere other than the Capital. Of course she'd studied information about the different regions from her textbooks, but actually traveling to them was something she'd never done, and she needed to brush up on her geography of the nation. Then he spoke of taking Jiyu back home, and she blinked in surprise, her eyes widening. The mountain range was dangerous, from what she remembered. And Theo was willing to cross them in order to help Jiyu. It spoke volumes to her as to how kind Theo was. Not everyone was willing to risk their lives to help another, and that she knew from experience.
She felt the need to help also, but... how could she? She was just a student. She didn't have experience when it came to traveling dangerous terrain like the professor did. She was just.... herself. She had her fire, and her wings - although she wouldn't change her form unless the situation was dire - but she wasn't a great explorer.

She supposed it was possible he had crossed the lower mountains in the range, a handful were traversable even though it was exceedingly rare for anyone to take them with the convenience and safety of airship or just taking a boat around both being open. "Hnn." it was a weak sound at best, one leg trapped awkwardly under her body, a wing extended, the other folded in, tail bent oddly and one leg stretched out a bit much, left ears smashed into the ground. Clearly struggling she finally rolled completely onto her side, looking at the male and blinking a few times.
Her options had run out. If she wanted to live she had to trust him.
The female's scales shimmered as many seemed to melt away leaving her once more as a white haired human girl, though she was much slimmer and more sickly looking than before. "I possess no more mobility in this form though. I can barely breathe at best." she curled into herself, the over saturation of oxygen flowing through her body actually really hurt. Did this human really realize what he was getting himself into here?

Theo, trying his best to somehow seemed concerned and unconcerned at the same time, glanced over her weakened and sickly human body and did some mental gymnastics. He hadn't brought much of his wealth with him, but he did get paid a decent wage and had little expenses. While he was generous with his time and nearly everything else he could offer, parting with his riches and valuables was a hard thing for him to voluntarily do without some internal arguing with himself. Theo was indeed a kind and mostly gentle soul, but he had a selfish streak that came on strong no matter the circumstances. He'd already offered to help, though, so he couldn't back out now. Losing a bit of money here would just give him an excuse to go out and find something shiny to replace it, right? Right...
It was true he hadn't had the luxury of taking ships neither by air or sea, but now he did. Perhaps it was a bad decision on his part, but he didn't think it through very well. Theo was a bit leap-before-look, so the next words out of his mouth were ill advised but he seemed blissfully ignorant. "Ryse! This seems like the best time for a field trip. I've been teaching you about areas, artifacts, and survival..but just listening to me and the audio book is pointless. It must be practiced. Think of this as a practical exam. Hurry and pack a small travel bag and some warm clothes, maybe a couple things that might be good for Jiyu. Remember what I've taught about cold, high altitude environments," he said, though curiously he didn't move himself.
Stooping, he smiled a sympathetic and slightly worried smile at the now humanoid Flurry. "Do I have permission to pick you up?" he asked, though as far as he could tell that was the only option either of them had. "Also, if we take an airship, where do I need to make our destination?"

Ryse stiffened as she heard the professor speak her name, fully expecting to be in trouble. But upon listening to his words... he wanted her to... come with them? At first she thought she’d heard him wrong. But no. Theo had told her to pack a travel bag and to grab some warm clothes for both herself and Jiyu. She blinked in surprise. He was dead serious it seemed. He really wanted her to come along with them. She opened her mouth to question just how much use she would be on this journey. Surely the professor knew that she was as inexperienced as one could be?
“Professor I don’t th-“
There. He’d said that word. ‘Exam’. She stopped talking, closing her mouth as she processed the word. This journey was a test? He was testing her on how well she did? Or maybe how much knowledge she could apply to the trip? A thousand possibilities ran through her mind, but there was one thought that came to her mind. The only one that mattered. If it was a test, then she’d do her best to pass it. She always did her best when it came to her classwork. This time would be no different. She couldn’t afford to fail a class, no matter what the subject was. She’d promised her mother she would graduate from the school, and that was what she intended to do.
After a moment, the student nodded then dashed off to her dorm room. Turning invisible she transformed and flew as fast as her wings could carry her. If Jiyu was telling the truth about how sick she was - which she believed the dragon was telling the truth - there wasn’t a moment to waste. Landing at her door and using her mouth to turn the handle, she transformed back to human form and hurriedly grabbing a small bag and putting some warm clothes in it. She grabbed a jacket for herself and Jiyu, and after a moment grabbed the thicker jacket for the professor. She had her fire which she could keep herself warm, but she didn’t know if Theo had any powers like that. Looking around the room and deciding that she’d gotten everything she needed, the teenager rushed back to the two of them, transforming back to human form and dropping the invisibility as she reached them. “I’m... back Professor...” She said between gasps of air.

Seeming unconcerned and concerned at the exact same time? Was something the flurry didn't even attempt to recognize, by the time she had been done with the life where she had first became a white dragon, she had grown to accept her handicap dealing with emotions. Jiyu was comfortable with not knowing what they were thinking about nor what they felt about this.
Looking over from her position curled up on the ground she glowered at him lightly for a few seconds in a rare display of emotion before she chose that she would just have to let that happened because there was no way she was capable of walking on her own. "Yeah, just be gentle, I'm not the most sturdy built creature in the world." in fact she was actually rather frail in build to be frank, even if she could go forever in a fight if she wasn't hit, the Flurry didn't have strong enough of a body to outlast in sheer strength. "Sadly I picked the furthest caverns from civilization for our den. It doesn't matter which village we dock at, my home is deep within the mountain range peaks, pretty much the same length and difficulty of travel no matter where the airship drops us." she had to put some faith in someone this time, or she was going to die again so she straight up mentioned that it was a den she normally lived in up in the peaks, and it was shared, there were more of her own.
"Just don't go telling anyone on the airships or anything what we're doing. If I survive I don't want to have to defend my home from rumors." she grumbled the comment, trying to push herself up a little so it would be easier for Theo to get a hold of her, but failing miserably.

Glancing at Ryse, the professor nodded in acknowledgment, though seemed slightly stressed himself. He was trying to hide it with confidence and his normally easy going attitude, but this was literally a life and death situation for someone other than himself. Taking responsibility for two other lives was already starting to weigh on him. He was no hero. He never had been and probably never would be. Yet here he was, attempting to save a life while also trying to be a good teacher. Theo felt he was fumbling through this life at best.
"I'll be as careful as I can be," Theo smiled, stooping down and gathering her up as if trying to pick up a banana so old that a single heavy thumbprint would leave its mark. Despite being loud and clumsy and unpredictable, he could be gentle when he wanted to be. Once his arms had secured her, he took a deep breath and started the trek off campus toward the airship launchpads. "Alrighty then, let's go! No time to waste, right?" the young man attempted lightheartedness again, only highlighting his discomfort in the direness of the situation. "Ryse and I won't breathe a word," Theo assured the ill girl, mentally preparing himself for the tasks at hand. Getting someone to drop them randomly amongst the dangerous mountains would probably take some bribery to begin with...

Ryse gave the teacher a warm encouraging smile, despite her own nervousness. She was naive when it came to trusting people, she would admit that openly, but she wasn't naive about how dangerous the situation was. She knew that there would be many things they would have to face before they returned Jiyu safely to her home. Freezing temperatures, falling rocks, avalanches, snowstorms, predators.. These were just a few of the obstacles standing in their way. However, she trusted the professor. He was experienced in this sort of thing, and had traveled all around the world. He'd probably been through snowstorms before. Ryse regretted not owning a winter coat that she could give to either the flurry or the professor; she'd never had a need for one. But she had a feeling that a coat would be more useful than just thick jackets.
She nodded to the Flurry. "Right. We won't say a word, don't worry." The secrecy of her home location and the safety of her clan was obviously important to Jiyu. Ryse would never want to put anyone in danger, so she would keep her mouth shut. And... while she didn't know Jiyu, she trusted her to at least not lead them to a cavern full of hungry dragons waiting to tear them limb from limb. Or wipe their minds of everything they knew and leave them stranded on the mountains with no recollection of how they got there.
Which brought the next question to her mind. "What are we going to tell the people on the airship?" It wasn't a common sight to see someone carrying a very sick girl in their arms, wanting to be dropped off in a mountain range, after all. She didn't want them to think they were kidnapping the poor girl. That wouldn't end well.

It really did feel like being crushed the longer she struck around which would sound odd to anyone that actually lived at this altitude, considered the dense amount of oxygen normal. Even the light touch that Theo used in an effort to secure her without any harm was fairly painful, every fiber of her body painfully aware she wasn't going to survive much longer. "Just say that I have some terminal illness and the trip is a species specific death right." she was struggling to speak but they needed some plan that no one would interfere with. In an age where a school like eldritch existed? Jiyu calculated it was likely no one would disturb them if they thought such, and to be frank it was kind of true, Flurry did everything they could to die where the skeleton could never be discovered thus skewing the time of their 'extinction' ensuring that no one looked for them logically. Especially as technology progressed? Their remote homes would not be safe forever without calculated efforts to keep things that way.
