welcome to Eldritch Academy
In a world of myths and mysteries, the pinnacle of the magical academies exists. Eldritch Academy offers education to all ages and species but specializes in the study and training of one's innate mystical capabilities, often called Eldritch Energies, Powers, or Unknowns, but more formally known as their Talent. However, tensions run high with the nations only holding a fragile peace as the Talents that rival the epitomes of technology change the balance of power.
With the more recent uprising of evil Shades and introduction of combat-oriented programs into Talent-focused schools, nations grow more aggressive towards one another. The demand for resources grows, and skirmishes at the border of Arka and Mistere become more frequent. Monsters run into the nations from the Wildes, terrorizing villages and cities. The need for trained or in-training Hunters and Guardians has never been more urgent.

Ryse walked down the hallway of the Cobalt dorms, the sunshine streaming in through the multiple windows in the hallway. Oras had come to her room several days ago, and they had planned a trip to go see her mother in Hisakawa. They were leaving tomorrow, in fact. But Ryse knew she couldn't leave without telling Zeke about it. She would fell terrible if she left, and he went to her room looking for her only to find out that she was gone. She could only imagine the kind of panic he would be put through. So, to cut to the chase, she was telling him today, before she left. That way he knew and would be better prepared.
His room was the last one to the right, if she remembered correctly. She neared the door and smiled as she recognized the room number. Yep, it was the right room. Raising a hand, she knocked on the door. "Zeke? It's me Ryse. Can I come in? I want to talk to you about something important." She wasn't sure exactly how he would react to this news, if she was being honest. But telling him was better than not.

In the realms of dreams, most people could do anything they wanted. If they entered a lucid state and became conscious they were in a dream, there was literally no limits to their feats, save for their imagination. However for others, it could be yet another prison. A cage in where all of your fears could take form, and hunt and haunt you for what felt like an eternity. Such was the case for Zekigne, who lived his entire life in fear. Laying in his bed, twisting, squirming, flinching and groaning. He was in such a nightmare at this very moment. In this nightmare he had gone through a ruthless cycle where he lost control of his natures. The last few minutes he was forced to cut himself to offer another his blood in order to heal them, tore off his limbs one by one, and even offer his own soul to help another individual. All the while begging for it to stop, feeling every second of the pain. When he 'woke up' from that dream, he only awoke to another nightmare where his demons took over. Forcing him to slaughter and torture entire cities, men women and children. Animals, nature, everything for no reason. All the while he begged for it all to stop.
For the endless cycle of nightmare within nightmare to end. For him to wake up. For him to return to the world where he at least had a false sense of control over his natures. And he was even close to wishing for the sweet release of death...
When Ryse began to speak to him, her words flew into his mind and quickly reconstructed his nightmares. No longer was he slaughtering random civilians. He now grabbed Ryse by the throat, slamming her against the ground as he began to torture her in the most gruesome, vicious, cruel and painful way imaginable. His pleads for help became greater, but no one could hear him. Only the demonic voice which laughed and told him to do more. Outside his nightmares, Zekigne fell off of the ground, forced into a miniature seizure. A black mist would begin to slowly shed off of him. Not much, but enough to notice. Almost as if the mist were grasping him softly with long dark hands. Tears pouring down his face, his mouth open as if to cry for help but no sound emerging.

Ryse waited after she finished speaking. She waited several long moments, before lowering her hand back to her side. Tilting her head in confusion, as she'd expected the other student to be there, she pressed her head to the door to see if she could hear anything. She was able to hear things most humans wouldn't because of her canine side. Maybe she could hear if he was in the room or not.
Listening intently, the teenager tried to see if she could hear even the slightest noise that would tell him Zeke was inside. If he was, maybe he just didn't hear her.
There.
She heard the sound of... groaning? Was he sick? Listening more, she just about jumped as she heard the sound of something heavy falling to the ground, then the sound of whimpering. Pulling away from the door, her eyes widened. Was he in trouble? It sounded like he'd fallen. Or maybe pushed. Was someone in there with him? Was someone hurting him?
Stepping back a pace, she grabbed the doorhandle, intending to open it and find out the truth herself, but it was locked. Her concern spiked to alarm now, and she pounded on the door, trying to bust it open so she could help. "Zeke! Zeke open the door!" She called, then immediately felt foolish. If he was being attacked, he wouldn't be able to do so.
She rammed the door several times with her shoulder, the wood finally giving way after the fourth try, and she came tumbling into the room. Ignoring the screaming pain her shoulder was giving her, she hurriedly stood up, whirling around to locate the student and help if needed. She saw him on the floor near his bed, curled into the ball. And narrowed her eyes as she saw black mist hovering over him.
She growled angrily, the air around her igniting in flame. She didn't know what the mist was, but she wasn't going to let it hurt Zeke. "Hey! You leave him alone!"

Zekigne did not wake. He did not respond. Ryse's calls echoed in his dreams, only they were pleads for mercy. Not concern for him. And when Ryse's fire erupted, Zekigne himself ignited in the nightmare, burning the girl who wanted to help him. Causing her to scream, as well as Zekigne. The scream echoed in the real world, but once again voiceless. His body tried to curl up into a ball, but the seizure prevented this. Only allowing a jerking motion as his body curled an inch then back again, then repeat. The mist didn't grow, nor did it shrink. It simply existed. The only evidence that whatever this was, wasn't natural.

Ryse saw that Zeke wasn't stirring besides the harsh flinch. The mist - whatever it was - didn't make any moves after she'd yelled at it. It just continued to be there, hovering around the other student. Coming to the conclusion that perhaps it was non-sentient, Ryse's fire slowly died and she carefully made her way towards it, warily keeping an eye on it. As she neared Zeke, the mist did nothing. So she proceeded to walk to him.
Kneeling down, she inspected him. He didn't seem to be injured. In fact it, looked like he was having a nightmare. So he was dreaming? Did he have some sort of power that activated while he was sleeping? She didn't know anything about Zeke, not really.
Reaching out a hand, she touched his shoulder and shook him gently. "Hey. Hey, Zeke. Wake up, you're having a nightmare."

The light movement of shaking the young nephalem created a literal earthquake in his dream. At the dying scream of Ryse in the nightmare, Zekigne was thrown out of the dream. Launching upward, the boy screamed in utter terror. As he did so, a shimmer of energy could be seen at the door. He had an artifact given to him by faculty so that if anything happened, no one would hear. He reacted wildly, pushing back at Ryse, knocking her back, but also shoving himself backward, losing his balance and landing on his back. He quickly pushed himself to the corner of the room and curled into a ball, hiding his face as he breathed heavily and rapidly. His sobbing now being heard as he tried to calm himself. He escaped. He was out. The nightmare was over. The torture was over. He was so caught up in this thought that he had entirely forgotten Ryse was even here to begin with.

The teenager was shocked by the affect her touch had on him, and she was unprepared for him to scream, nor to push her backwards. She landed on her back on the floor, grimacing from her jostled shoulder, but rolled onto her side and moved to get back on her feet. Looking around for Zeke, as he'd moved while she was distracted, she saw him curled into a ball in a corner of the room. Almost hyperventilating. There was also a strange glowing energy at the door, but. Frightened boy first. Weird glowing thing later.
Concern on her face, she softly called out to him. "Zeke? Are you okay?" She didn't move towards him, afraid to scare him again. She didn't want him running off when he was like this. He could get hurt.

Zekigne didn't answer. At least, not at first. He spent a good five whole minutes doing nothing but trying to control and calm his breathing. The first two minutes was nothing but his body desperately trying to draw air into his lungs in between the sobs. The next two minutes he slowly calmed his breathing down. And the final one he had reduced his sobs to sniffs and gasps of air. Soon after that, he shifted himself just enough to see her. She saw him... She saw him have a nightmare... 'She should die for seeing me in a weak state.' Too tired to fight the nature, he simply grit his teeth and curled up again, shaking a bit. He waited until the voices stopped before he was able to calm down again. Once he did, his body went limp, unable to move.
"Y-y-yeah, I.. I'm ok. Just a.... A nightmare is all.. One that seemed, very very real..."

Ryse calmly waited as Zeke calmed down, not moving or speaking the entire time. If she did so, she worried he would bolt, and that was the last thing she wanted. She was patiently waited until he was completely calm enough to speak.
"It looked like a really bad nightmare." She replied, slowly walking over to him, sitting beside him on the ground. She turned her head to look at him. "What was it about? Sometimes I have one where I'm being chased by something. Or that I'm falling forever with no way to save myself. That one was scary." She found that talking about her nightmares helped. Maybe it would be the same way with Zeke. She didn't know until she tried and asked.

His body instinctively shied away from her when she sat beside him, but he didn't move to a different position. He was too tired and scared to do that. Besides? This was his place to get away. There was the forest, but evidently that was occupied now too.. He had nowhere to escape. 'If I kill her I'll have my safe place again.' 'No I can't, they'd lock me up if I killed someone. And I can't kill her, I won't!' 'I could use this to gain her trust and learn about her pains so as to help her.' 'But I can't even help myself, how could I possibly help anyone else?!' 'I suppose I could gain her trust and use her rather than help her.' 'But for what?! To what end?! I don't want anything but peace and silence!!'
When she asked him what his dream was about he shook his head, refusing to tell her. Still sniffing a little bit. When she mentioned her nightmares he gave a short, "Ha. I wish I had something as mild as that... I-I can't tell you, I just can't.."

The hybrid watched as Zeke seemed conflicted between telling her or not. He also shied away from her, but she expected that to happen. She didn't move closer or try to touch him. Just sat there calmly, smiling at him. When he finally told her he couldn't tell her his nightmare, she shrugged her shoulders. "That's okay. You don't have to if you don't want to."
Ryse studied him for a few moments, before speaking again. "How about we talk about something else? Like... hmm..... Oh! What's your favorite color? Mine is blue." She knew that the best thing to do right now was to take his mind off of it. A distraction was what he needed.

He had expected her to push to share his nightmare with her, but she didn't. Which was an extreme relief for him, actually resulting in a sigh from him. She spoke up again, seeming to find something to talk about in order to get his mind off of whatever his nightmare was. 'She's buttering me up. She wants to weaken me.' 'But then, why help calm me down? I'm not strong when I'm afraid, far from it...' 'I think she's helping me. I should help her tenfold.' 'I can't, not when I'm broken...' When he remembered her question he thought about it. Not warm colors, that reminded him of hell. Not cool colors as it reminded him of heaven. Both being places he was hated in. Black reminded him of the darkness demons bring. White reminded him of the light angels bring... What about a balance he thought? He wanted to get rid of both natures, but if he couldn't.....
He fidgeted uncomfortably. "...I guess.......Purple..."

Ryse nodded as she heard his answer. Purple, huh? It was an interesting choice. Not a very boyish color, in her opinion, but to each their own. "I like purple too." She replied, giving him a smile.
"Okay, how about... what's your favorite animal? I love birds." She might be biased because she herself was part bird, but there was nothing better than the feeling of the wind blowing past her (besides seeing the sun). She knew she would go crazy if she lost her wings, or the ability to fly. It was a part of her. She would never trade it away for anything.
While asking these questions would provide a nice distraction for Zeke, she also would get to know him a little better. Or at least find out what his likes and dislikes were. The thought that she needed to tell him she was leaving bugged her at the back of her mind, but she pushed him away. She would tell him after he'd calmed down some more.

Listening to her next question he once again had an inner debate as to what his favorite animal was. Torn between carnivore herbivore, winged creatures and wingless creatures. In the end he couldn't come up with anything that he liked which wasn't tied to angels and demons in one way or another. Sooooo... What did he want? Well, he supposed freedom. Eagles represent freedom right? "I guess.... Eagles..." He was silent a bit longer, but voices filled his head. 'But why is she here? She wouldn't be able to hear him unless she was listening in at the door. Had she suspected the truth? I'll hurt her if she does, and make sure she doesn't tell anyone. But she might need someone's company too, so I should spend all my time with her. Except that I can't risk losing control around others..'

"You like birds too? That's cool." Ryse replied, her smile growing wider. It seemed they had something in common then.
When Zekigne asked why she came to his room, she rubbed the back of her head sheepishly. "Well, I came to your room because there was something I was going to tell you. But I heard you fall from your bed and... um... I thought you were in trouble. So I... kinda... busted down your door. I didn't mean to! Your door was locked!"
Her cheeks turned red in embarrassment as she admitted that fact, but she wanted to be honest. Lying would only take the situation from somewhat good to bad in a second.
