welcome to Eldritch Academy
In a world of myths and mysteries, the pinnacle of the magical academies exists. Eldritch Academy offers education to all ages and species but specializes in the study and training of one's innate mystical capabilities, often called Eldritch Energies, Powers, or Unknowns, but more formally known as their Talent. However, tensions run high with the nations only holding a fragile peace as the Talents that rival the epitomes of technology change the balance of power.
With the more recent uprising of evil Shades and introduction of combat-oriented programs into Talent-focused schools, nations grow more aggressive towards one another. The demand for resources grows, and skirmishes at the border of Arka and Mistere become more frequent. Monsters run into the nations from the Wildes, terrorizing villages and cities. The need for trained or in-training Hunters and Guardians has never been more urgent.

The young black haired female was up late once more on a Saturday night after playing some relaxing basketball for most of the day. Instead of playing video games or such nonsense like her brother? Lavender was researching different subjects, the current days research project was on enchanted jewelry, one she often came back to considering the ornate pendant hanging around her own neck. So even though she was burning the midnight oil she was still within the school library most of it dark save for the lamp she had glowing on her table and the lantern she brought to look through the book aisles.
"Were is that next volume?" she grumbled the comment slightly, bunny slippers squeaking against the floor as she scooted further down with her lantern, scratching the shoulder of her yellow pajama's in frustration.

Manya glided towards the library carrying a book she'd borrowed and since finished reading. Thinking more on the subject of magical creatures she'd considered the possibility of Magical creatures and their possible associations with enchanted magical items. Regardless of what she'd hoped to gleam from the novel Manya had quite enjoyed the read, having opted to stay after hours within the classroom to finish the remaining chapters before heading over to the library and returning the book. Closing up the cover she gave a modest sigh of relief, mostly in thanks that no one had bothered to or been concerned with checking on the particular classroom she occupied. Manya dreaded what problems her startled reaction to such an event would have caused were she to have accidentally caught someone within her gaze but this late in the night very few people seemed to wander the school's hallways, something the Serpentes was rather thankful for. It actually allowed her a level of freedom from the usually required covering of her eyes and would be helpful in returning to the library as she hadn't quite memorized its exact location yet.
With the borrowed book tucked under one arm, Manya looked up to the placard which labeled the library. "I wonder if I could convince the board to install thermal light displays..." She pondered with a passing sigh before pushing open the library door. Something like that seemed a bit much to ask just for the conveniences of a single teacher.

Staying after hours was nothing new for Lavender, since her brother was in college and her room-mate hadn't said anything about her getting back very late in the morning as of yet, almost every night was a late one for her. Yet, she was not used to encountering other students making such late times, certainly some stayed somewhat late and there were clubs, but she hadn't encountered anyone this late to the current day.
Understandably when she turned out to see some snake-like woman standing in the doorway to the library, the young girl was shocked for several long moments having not expected to see anyone this late. Than, in spite of seemingly perfectly human and unaware she 'should' be paralyzed, she blinked. "I'm sorry, just standing here is so rude, I just didn't expect anyone else to be around this late." the young teenager spoke up, walking forward to set her lantern down on the ledge beside them. It would be rude to simply not interact with the other because of the hour. "I'm Lavender, stayed late to research enchanted objects, most namely jewelry." and with that comment she placed her hand down her shirt to briefly fish out and display the odd pendant hanging around her neck. "I've been trying to take this off since I was old enough to grab it." Normally, it was not actually a difficult item to remove once a person knew what it was, but magic had to be channeled into the pendant to remove it and unware of what it or she were, prevented that from happening. Unluckily for Lavender the Were's who happened to be the species which created and used the moon/sun pendants, hailed from the wilds, thus the item was not a well researched one.

Oh no! Nonono! There was someone else on campus right now and they happened to be in the library of all possible places!? Manya let out a startled squeak and a gasp, forcing her eyes shut before promptly bringing the borrowed book up to her face to further block her own view. The girl, apparently going by the name Lavender, spoke. This was much to Manya’s relief, it likely meant she’d averted her gaze in time to prevent too much paralysis from setting in. “M-m-manya Slitherstone I’m so terribly sorry! I didn’t mean to look at you! I-I wasn’t aware anyone else was here at this hour so I got careless… P-please accept my apology and take this.” Manya stuttered, fumbling with a pocket of her outfit until she managed to produce a small vial of strangely colored translucent liquid. Slithering over to the student, Manya promptly set it down in front of the girl. “I had the school nurse prepare some of this medicine just in case something like this were to happen… It will help to reverse the effects.” Manya lowered the book from her face but kept her eyes closed tightly. In this way she could still see where the girl was, just by using her other senses.
Inwardly Manya began to scold herself. How stupid she’d been for leaving her mask back in the classroom. She made a mental note to never do it again. Complacency was the enemy and she’d obviously let the absence of people in the classrooms at night get the better of her judgements. But at least the precaution of carrying the remedy with her was a good thing to have considered, she’d at least seen ahead in the event something like this happened to occur. Although it had still been her fault for letting her guard down… “Please forgive me…” Manya uttered yet another apology, having lost herself to her own mistake and subconsciously plagued herself with thoughts about the worst possible scenario. In her worry, Manya hadn’t even noticed how freely Lavender continued to speak despite the fact she should be paralyzed.

Seeing someone like a teacher, an adult, being so freaked out understandably alarmed the child slightly. Even if she was 13 by name a teenager she was still nothing more than a child who still looked to her elders for guidance as she tried to mature from child to full blown teenager. However, in this case listening to her senior only caused confusion for the student as she couldn't figure out what the teacher was talking about. Why would it be bad to look at someone? Was she missing some mannerism thing for the exact species of the teacher, oh that would be horrible the girl always tried to be polite to everyone. "Effects?" the voice that responded to the teacher was one of complete purified confusion no understanding whatsoever existing within the small 'human' teenager.
"Miss Slitherstone, I'm terribly sorry if this is rude, but what in the world are you talking about?" there was disbelief in the students voice, blue eyes opened wide and stunned, looking between the vial and teacher. Lavender really could not process what was going on especially this late. "I'm just fine." perfectly unfrozen and mobile in spite of the fact she also appeared to be as much of a human as she appeared to be unaffected! "There's nothing to forgive you didn't do anything to me." but, something should have happened, even the records the school had on file labeled this middle schooler as human and entirely not magically affiliated even lacking a grade alongside having no talents.

"What...?" Manya uttered in quiet confusion. She was certain she'd memorized all the students currently attending school at this academy and a girl named Lavender did ring a bell but... But that student was Human, at least that was what Manya remembered reading in the registry.
"I..." She wanted to be sure but if it'd just been a case of not looking long enough she really didn't want to induce a student to suffer the effects of paralysis just because of her curiosity. But even so Manya was fairly certain she'd laid eyes upon Lavender long enough to have manifested the effects, especially if she was human. Humans were normal creatures with no inherent magical history existing within their biology. For one to remain unaffected by Manya's Petrifying Gaze was unheard of and completely impossible. But then she did have an antidote just in case so...
Manya chanced a look at Lavender. Maybe if she minimized exposure it wouldn't be so bad... Squinting open one eye she beheld the girl within her vision. The girl was standing, seemingly unaffected by her gaze. "What..." Manya forgot herself and both eyes opened, revealing both of her silver-gray hues to the girl. "This is... really quite strange. I'm fairly certain the student registry identified you as Human and yet you remain unaffected- Ah! I'm sorry!" Manya released her hands. She'd subconsciously gripped the girl's face and had been staring intently.
"Ahem..." Manya closed her eyes and cleared her throat while giving Lavender the proper distance she deserved to have. "Sorry about that, I got a little caught up in the moment just now..." Manya glanced at the girl again from the corner of a single opened eye. Crossing one arm over her chest and resting the elbow of the other upon it, Manya then placed her chin between a thumb and index finger. "But this is rather odd... The registry states that you're human and yet the power of my eyes doesn't seem to affect you at all..." Manya opened her other eye and regarded Lavender once again with both, her brow furrowing up in growing contemplative confusion. "Ms. Lavender, is it possible that are you perhaps... not actually human?"

At least the teacher seemed to be the same level of confused she was, that helped things a little in the girl opinion.
Hearing Slitherstone attempt to speak once more only to trail off after saying a single Lavender kept her eyes trained right where the snake woman's would be if the book or closed lids hadn't been in the way most of this time. Polite people always made eye contact with those they spoke to and she was no exception! Only quickly the curt eye contact turned a bit uncomfortable as the teacher moved forward grabbing onto her cheeks and staring her dead in the eye. Was this some sort of species related custom? Oh, sometimes it was so hard to know what was rude and what wasn't.
Eventually the awkwardness ended and she was able to process what had just taken place before she was bowled over by the teacher questioning her species. Apparently the teacher had a species or talent based ability that at the very least did something rather negative to humans. Why hadn't such a thing affected her? The girl knew at the very least her species had nothing to do with it, after-all she looked just like her big brother anyways so there was no chance she had been the result of an affair.
"No, that's impossible, the only non humans in my family are my half alien little sisters." there was no way she could be anything besides human even if some other species were very cool to socialize with that just wasn't her lot in life. "I also look just like my mother and brother who are absolutely human." It was weird for a teacher to go around questioning the species of a student but she could understand it if this was indeed the first time any human had remained unaffected by the teachers gaze. "Although, I do have an idea of what's causing it." what caused anything weird that happened to her? Bingo, her hand reaching down to cup the moon/sun pendant hanging around her neck settled at chest level. "I have no magical affinity, don't register on the grade system for power, at thirteen I have no talent, but this is magical, quiet literally it's been on me since birth because it just doesn't come off, something in its magic could be why." in a display she lifted it up and attempted to remove it but it broke itself free of her hands and snapped back down onto her neck as if it had not been moved at all.

Manya listened to the girl's rejection of the proposal that she wasn't actually human, and even the assumption that it had something to do with the pendant around her neck. "Mmm..." Manya regarded the pendant with curiosity. So it was a magically enchanted item? But then if it were blocking her ability it could explain a few things but the only items she'd ever come across that were able to counter the power of her eyes had been mirrors and other reflective objects. If it was countering her power then Manya was more than certain she would have noticed with a nauseating backlash. "...I don't think so..." Manya stated, seemingly considering and contemplating the possibilities Lavender proposed. "If this item of yours really was countering the power my eyes possess then I think it would be more obvious."
Manya placed the book she held down on a nearby table before continuing to explain her counter argument. "You see, ever since I was born my eyes have always had a certain power... Whenever I happen to lay my sight upon a living creature this power activates, completely paralyzing them... Unfortunately I don't have any control over who it affects but thanks to some research that I've done I was able to discover that whatever power it is I'm cursed with, it doesn't seem to activate when I look upon a magical creature." Manya bowed her head before regarding Lavender once more. "Even though I can't control it I do become aware of when this power activates itself and looking upon you... It doesn't happen." Manya tilted her head slightly to the side and offered Lavender a grim smile. "While I have no doubt there do exist magical items which can block the power of my Paralyzing Gaze, there doesn't exist anything that could actually disable it's activation altogether."
Manya fidgeted. While she was certain of the realities, she hoped she hadn't come off as overly rude to the girl. "I am sorry, but that's how it is... Unless this pendant of yours happens to be some legendary magical device I've never heard of before, I can say with certainty that it isn't the cause, just as my Petrifying Gaze not activating whenever I look upon you is no coincidence either..." She'd come here to return a book and yet she was having a debate over the legitimacy of a girl's species label in the enrollment roster of the academy instead... In some ways it felt kind of mean. She was denying Lavender's certainty in knowing her own Heritage after all. Perhaps ending things here instead of continuing a debate would be the best course, Manya thought to herself as she picked up the borrowed book once again and headed towards the appropriate shelves to replace it. "If you'll excuse me..." Manya dismissed herself from Lavender's immediate presence before heading further into the library.

Nothing at all was ever obvious when it came to the pendant hanging around her neck, it was why she spent so many nights pouring over books to see if she could find any direction to research in. "I'd know if I wasn't human." she spoke the words in a pinch of huff while Lavender could be naïve she was not so much so that what the teacher had implied would go over her head, she didn't like the implication. Briefly she walked back to the several books she had laying open on the table nearby, tracing her finger across several paragraphs so she could try to remember which book she had needed neck. "Enchanted Jewelry Configurement Volume 3." she said the name of the book out loud once to make sure she could remember the name this time, considering the possibility she could not find it before because she may have remembered the wrong name or number.
"Also, excuse me as this means no disrespect, but you don't have all the knowledge in the world, there could be enchanted items of different cultures or simply one's nearly ancient that you have no idea exist that could do that and my pendant could be one of them. You can't just write it off as the only explanation is someone being wrong about something that would have more than likely been caught by a doctor had it been the case. I Am Human." not that there was anything wrong with other species, especially considering she had family outside of the strictly human realm, but this teacher was essentially calling her mother a lair. No matter how respectful and curt she was, regardless of how good of a student she wanted to be, she couldn't let a teacher call her deceased mother a lair. "When you say something that implies I'm not you're essentially calling my dead mother a lair, so please don't do it again." hopefully the snake woman would be a bit forgiving knowing why she was so protective over the matter, hopefully.
Walking along the book shelves against she once more tried to see if she could find the book, not thinking much of the fact her walk was taking her back down the aisle the teacher had went down. "That sucks, it really isn't here tonight." she grumbled the comment slightly, finding her finger laying in the empty space where the book definitely should have been.

“I suppose you would…” Manya responded, heading down the shelves of books. Numerical values? Or perhaps these books were aligned in alphabetical order like most other libraries she’d visited in the past… Where had this book been located on the shelves again? She’d asked for the book specifically before and another had retrieved the book for her so Manya didn’t readily know its actual spot of origin…
“My apologies, I didn’t mean any discourtesy towards you or your late mother…” Manya returned to and bowed in apology to Lavender. Now she’d done it. Unintentionally causing such discomfort in another because of her own certainties. And towards a student no less. “It’s true I suppose this item of yours could have some sort of powerful enchantment on it that I know nothing about and that could be why my eyes don’t work… It’s just that if this is the case well… I’ve never encountered an item that could affect the activation of things remotely like that. But if this pendant of yours does prevent things like my Paralyzing Gaze from affecting you then it sounds to me like what you have would be a Charm of Protection. They’re magically enchanted devices that’ve been known to offer wards against certain forms of magic and spell-like magical abilities.” Manya regarded Lavender with some curiosity. “But, if you’re unable to remove the item from your person then that would suggest that it’s also been bestowed with a powerful possession curse.” Magical beasts and creatures were indeed Manya’s true area of interest. But then magical items were interesting in their own right. That a student would come to be in possession of a cursed item seemed likely impossible but then by display the girl couldn’t seem to remove it from herself.
She followed Lavender down the shelves as she searched. For a book it seemed. “I borrowed this book earlier but I have to admit I’m no good when it comes to the sorting system of this library… Do you maybe know where this one is supposed to be returned?” Manya asked, revealing the book she was trying to return. It just happened to be the same book the student herself was trying to find. Enchanted Jewelry Configurement Volume 3
