welcome to Eldritch Academy
In a world of myths and mysteries, the pinnacle of the magical academies exists. Eldritch Academy offers education to all ages and species but specializes in the study and training of one's innate mystical capabilities, often called Eldritch Energies, Powers, or Unknowns, but more formally known as their Talent. However, tensions run high with the nations only holding a fragile peace as the Talents that rival the epitomes of technology change the balance of power.
With the more recent uprising of evil Shades and introduction of combat-oriented programs into Talent-focused schools, nations grow more aggressive towards one another. The demand for resources grows, and skirmishes at the border of Arka and Mistere become more frequent. Monsters run into the nations from the Wildes, terrorizing villages and cities. The need for trained or in-training Hunters and Guardians has never been more urgent.

“They had many divisions, many teams dedicated to working on different projects,” Inglisse responded coolly, facing his serious blue gaze with her sharp amber eyes. “Each project took various measures, often up to whoever led the project. You will have to explain what you mean by that.”
As a child, she directly worked with her parents. They specifically research sacramentum, but due to the erratic behavior of the elements, she was given odd jobs until she grew older, and even then, she never really was fully invested. However, she knew she was desensitized at a young age. Her family had taught her the dangers in getting too attached to anything or anyone, especially if they were in the field of science or a soon to be subject.
But now she was curious of the experience Oras had had with the Baskervilles. She gazed back down at the Book of Baskerville. There was a page on atranochs that she had vigorously studied and was adding to. On the page was a summary on how to summon them, some details on their world, along with a few odd facts here and there. She personally had been committed to their psychology and abilities, thus had been recording when the ice atranoch behaved in ways that differed from other species, along with notes on his abilities. Could it be that the atranoch they had gotten their hands on so long ago was this one? It could not be… the page was dated back five centuries ago. Oras had stated he was only a century old. What encounter could he have possibly had with her family?

Hearing her telling him to give her more details on exactly what he meant was certainly annoying.. But understandable at the same time. He was trying to get her to open up even more, which he was guessing was very much difficult. However in addition to this, she was also trying to get him to open up about himself as well. At this point he had to take the gamble, but he’d be smart about it. “There are two paths one can take to attain what they desire. One with moral and one without. That is to say: the humane, and inhumane ways to achieve things. That is all I shall answer with for the time being, so when you answer I would suggest you tell me what you believe to be humane and what you believe to be inhumane. Now please answer my question now that I’ve provided you with enough context to do so. And remember: Answer honestly.”

Inglisse almost laughed as he mentioned the option of humane and inhumane. Did he not realize that both words had the word, ‘human’ in them? Different species understood morals differently. Blood-drinking species were perfectly fine with draining the blood of someone. Youkai happily ate other species. Many species did things others would disapprove of to survive. Perhaps she was human and should have aligned herself with “human morals”, but that was hard to do in a world shared by other species. Besides, she doubted that she could even call herself human anymore. Nothing about her body functioned like the average human. She looked and acted the part, but in reality, the Sacramentum dictated her biology.
“You saw the experiment I performed before you,” she said, solemnly returning his gaze. “Make your own judgement; was that “inhumane” or “humane”?”
Morality varied from species to species. Hopefully she did not have to state that; it was common sense. She personally saw no lines to cross for her experiments. So long as nothing was wasted and everything had a purpose. She was not out for her own enjoyment, but to further the research that would be written in the Book of Baskerville. That, and she hoped to find the answer to end the suffering she knew.

…So that’s how she was going to be… “Perhaps I should rephrase. Morally good or morally evil. Or perhaps I should give an example if you can’t even figure that one out. Evil, is committing murder out of anger, pleasure, jealousy, and other such emotions, or to extort someone or something via the murder. The exception of course being self defense or saving another’s life. Torture on the innocent, or torture for the sake of pleasure in general. Stripping the free will from others. These three should be clear signs of evil. Whether people refuse to notice it or not, everyone knows these acts are evil deep down.” His eyes flashed white for a second. After that flash his eyes were no longer emotionless. They now held a dangerous power which she would very clearly see. Almost as if a blizzard of unimaginable power and force were waiting to be unleashed.
When he spoke, the room slowly started freezing solid, starting from where he sat. A sort of domed shield covered the plant creature to keep it protected from the cold. “And it depends greatly on your answer to this next question, Inglisse. Was the creature you took that nervous system from alive or dead when you took it? And if it was dead were you the one who killed it or them? And remember. Do not, lie, to me.”

He missed a more neutral point. Had he even once considered that “inhumane” things could be done for the overall good? Life was unfair and naturally inhumane. Most species followed the laws of survival of the fittest. Inglisse was no different. She conducted her harsher experiments not out of pleasure, but out of necessity. She was going to find the answers she was looking for or she was going to finally find a way to die trying.
Oras’ blue eyes flashed to a bright white before they settled to a strong and forceful gaze directed on her. Amber eyes only met them calmly, the girl notice the drastic shift in temperature once again. He seemed to know that she was dodging the question, but what was she supposed to tell him- that she had a phoenix held in a secret lab waiting on her for dinner, in exchange for feathers or other body parts? Absolutely not.
At least the question to come was easy enough to answer. “I created the nervous system out of raw components, nothing living or dead was used,” she explained simply. That much was true. She had broken down the elements and proteins needed for the nerves and constructed them that way, using Sacramentum as a means of binding them all together. Inglisse decided to say nothing further, and instead keep her gaze and demeanor calm. Were she lucky, she could easily play this off as him being unnecessarily suspicious and assuming once again.

He had missed the neutral point of course, because he did not accept the neutral term. He cared not for how the world was, but how it should be. And what people should strive for. It was the one thing he found admirable about humanity. They fought and struggled for the impossible, and their hope could very well get them there. Had he known she was devoid of any true hope, his approach would have been different. Nevertheless he listened to her answer. He did not speak, nor did he stop the ice slowly spreading across the room. What had already frozen by now was beginning to grow frost on top of it, which slowly turned into spears sticking out. The room had already started to darken where Oras sat, but none of this lasted long. By the time the freezing effect had reached between Oras and her it slowed to a halt, but did not recede.
His gaze did not drop either. “Final question. In a scenario where you were forced into a nightmarish curse and you were given the choice to seize the antidote. Assuming the only way to attain it is by vivisecting a living sentient being who is innocent of any crimes or sins. Would you do it? And if so. Why? Answer. Honestly.”

The question he asked seemed oddly specific, and really too close for comfort to the girl who lived with what was basically a curse. It was not a curse by definition, but it certainly did make her life hellish. “I would, if that were the case,” she answered honestly, expression still calm. “Simply because of the rule of survival of the fittest. The vampires drink the humans dry, the youkai take whatever they feel like eating, the demons devour the innocent, the daemons prey on the innocent. If anyone were forced into such a situation, it could only be expected. Of course, I personally would not resort to something like that unless I had tried every other option,” Inglisse responded honestly. It was true, she had tried every possible option. Hopefully, her words would dissuade the idea of the hell she was trapped in. Nobody knew about that. Nobody needed to know. The talk on morality was getting old.

Oras couldn’t hide the immediate wrath that was stirring in his eyes as she described survival of the fittest. It was a concept he never accepted. The ice would slowly spread some more, inch by inch across the room. When she told him that she personally would never resort to something like that unless she had tried every other possible method… The ice still didn’t stop spreading. Oras made no visible movement, nor any visible attempt to stop the ice. Only when it had almost reached Inglisse did it finally stop. The frost ceasing in a way that almost looked like it was reaching for her. Oras closed his eyes and didn’t move for a full minute as his mind processed all of the information.
When he opened his eyes, all malice was gone as if it never existed. “So that is the type of individual you are? Well, it’s only a fraction of a fraction. However, it’s enough to help me understand you better.” Oras stood up and in the span of that movement, the ice vanished along with the dark atmosphere. “My apologies summoner, but I needed to ensure there would not be a… Repeat of certain events. Regardless of what you say, what I did was necessary. This was not instinctual reflex to assume, nor sparatic via overly suspicious or paranoid. This was a choice I made with logic and experience. I probably made the rate of us becoming friends slower from this, but.. It was necessary. Do you have any other questions for me or regarding my past?”

Inglisse crossed her arms as the ice drew closer. Her amber eyes remained calmly yet stoically fixed on the glacier atranoch. Eventually the ice stopped, as she knew it would. Oras enjoyed threatening and using force to get his points across, she had observed. If he really hurt her, he would have contradicted his earlier words of seeking friendship. She only sighed as he apologized and the ice began to recede. “Always taking drastic actions, aren’t you? And you wonder why I have trust issues,” she left the snarky comment hanging in the air, arms still crossed and expression calm yet confident. She could see his actions as partially logical, but highly risky. She too enjoyed taking similar gambles, but with someone who could so easily figure out the full picture of her past, she was much more careful.
“I do have some questions. You mentioned that you had experience with the Baskerville organization. I want details on your encounter,” Inglisse said in response to his offering for more questions.

Oras just stared back into her eyes with a smirk appearing on his face again. “Those trust issues have nothing to do with me. You’re simply finding reasons to reinforce them. As for my drastic actions, well. Sometimes it’s intentional, sometimes it isn’t. Many times it’s an instinctual reaction based on how extreme my emotions are, so don’t take it too personal.” When she asked him for details on his encounter with the Baskerville organization his eyes darkened. A shadow appeared over his forehead and eyes and the temperature immediately dropped sixty degrees. “…You really want to know don’t you? Very well… They performed vivisection on me.” The room darkened as he spoke.
“Using tools that could heat to incredible temperatures, and even tools made of fire or magma, they experimented on me without mercy. They did every experiment they could possibly think of. When they discovered that my soul and spirit could not be destroyed on this world, as they were only a projection from Elentros. They began to vivisect those as well. My own soul and spirit, dissected, tortured and experimented with. I was literally dying over and over and over again. I can’t tell you how many times. There were many others who suffered the same fate as I. When my summoner found and released me three months later, I entered a wrathful state. Purging them, the facility, and freeing the souls of the tormented.” He looked her in the eyes. The pure malice behind them showing pure and brightly as his eyes glowed white.
“I do not accept stripping others of their free will, and reducing them to experiments one can torment as if they were a product. I do not accept murder of the innocent. I reject these things, and I reject the philosophy of survival of the fittest.” This time he took a deep breath outwardly as well as inwardly, and instantly everything returned to normal. He exhaled slowly before opening his eyes again. “If this satisfies you for the moment, I’ll take my leave. I’ll save my return question for you for another time.”

He patronized her once again, claiming she was looking for an excuse for her trust issues. If anything, she was verbally acknowledging them, something she had never really done. However, she was not too surprised he called her out on that, when it was far from the truth. She always had had trust issues; she was simply being sarcastic with him, taking a jab at his rather poor behavior. He told her not to take it personally, and fortunately for her, she had no connection to that sort of thing. It was not hurtful or damaging, merely a mixture of interesting and annoying.
Oras then spilled the details on his encounter with the Baskervilles. Their process sounded fitting and quite similar to how she sometimes operated, performing every possible experiment for the sake of research and record. She had wondered about the details written on the atranoch page in her Book of Baskerville, and it seemed that knowledge had been uncovered by the family’s experimentation on Oras. For sure, that page was something she would not be allowing him to see without good reason.
Amber eyes met the malice in his now-white eyes. It was not uncommon for most species to enter wrathful states after their encounters with the Baskervilles. For better or worse, it seemed that branch or division had been killed by the atranoch. The records of the experiments, however, remained safely in the Book of Baskerville.
“I see,” was all Inglisse could say, uncrossing her arms and leaning against the counter. What else was there to say? She had no right or reason to apologize for her family’s sins. While she appreciated what they left behind, she refused to take responsibility for their actions. What he stated he believed in sounded fair and just, but was not reality in Inglisse’s mind. Nothing was that straightforward or simple. Sometimes, in order to survive or find a means of obtaining peace, one had to commit horrendous acts. There was no escape. That was what survival of the fittest really meant.
“Ask your question now. I don’t need another interrogation with ice pointed at me,” she stated bluntly, sharp amber eyes still focused on him. She understood he did not enjoy talking about this, for the same reasons she disliked talking about her own past. However, she was not about to let him go just like that after everything that had just happened. Especially when it was not complete.

Oras calmly began walking to the door. Stroking the rosebud creature, as one would a dog or child. Of course, it was only a single stroke, as he didn’t stop walking away. When she told him to ask his question now he shook his head, never stopping his movement. “This question won’t be an interrogation. That was a one time event today, reserved for only the most extreme cases. I will save my question for later when we both have the strength to actually hold a discussion without holding a dagger at each other’s throats.” When he reached the door he waved his hand and the ice melted off. Removing the sound proof coating and opened the door. He looked at her before he walked out. “I truly do hope things can work out between us Inglisse. And I’m hoping you have the same hope in your heart and mind.”

Only the most extreme cases? It seemed that in the atranoch’s eyes, many situations were extreme. This one did not have to be, but it was made extreme regardless. Hell, even their first meeting had been extreme; he had attacked her and made assumptions without having really met her. While a small part of her wanted to trust him, he had more or less made it quite clear to her that that was impossible. His thinking was the exact opposite of hers, and with his stubbornness, he likely would never come around to see her perspective.
“Given your track record, I’d say that that’s out of the question. Notice I have never once aimed a sharp object at you, yet you always threaten physical violence upon me,” she observed. Inglisse followed him in smooth steps to the door. He said he hoped that she hoped that things would work out between them. She did, but probably not for the reasons he wished. “Ask the question. Let’s get this over with,” she said again, amber eyes determined.

Hearing her point out that he’d always threatened physical violence on her caused him to grit his teeth. She couldn’t see it of course but, still. He turned to look at her. “Your right. I’ve made some decisions and choices that were not my best. But at least I’m trying to make an effort, even if it doesn’t seem that way. If it happens again, just tell me to remember my promise and I assure you. Unless you have done something unspeakable, I will back off immediately.” His eyes were unwavering when he said this. He genuinely wanted things to work between them, but. He was realizing that would be a lot harder than he realized. It was clear she had intense trust issues, and he had emotional issues to deal with. Thus the two of them had to work on those one small step at a time. “I will not ask the question at this time Inglisse. Instead I will take some time to reflect on today and come back to you when the time is right.” With that he turned and walked out the door.

Trying to make an effort was a lie in her eyes. He had told her she could trust him, then turned his ice against her to force answers out of her. Sure, it was logical to use against an enemy or someone one was neutral with, but not on a friend or partner. Even Inglisse knew that much. He was full of exceptions and double standards. If he did not like something, he would snap into violent behavior or stubbornness to find answers. The same was not true for her, yet when she applied even a little bit of pressure, like she was now, he resisted.
He would apologize for what he did, but would certainly do it again. Did she have to remind him of a promise simply because he could not control his temper? And there was the idea that their morals certainly did not line up. She was certain the next question would hold another ordeal like the one she had just undergone. At least Inglisse could find peace in the idea that if needed, she would simply cancel their partnership and send him right back to his home world. She did not like how much he knew. He left the room, amber eyes glaring after him as he did so.
