welcome to Eldritch Academy
In a world of myths and mysteries, the pinnacle of the magical academies exists. Eldritch Academy offers education to all ages and species but specializes in the study and training of one's innate mystical capabilities, often called Eldritch Energies, Powers, or Unknowns, but more formally known as their Talent. However, tensions run high with the nations only holding a fragile peace as the Talents that rival the epitomes of technology change the balance of power.
With the more recent uprising of evil Shades and introduction of combat-oriented programs into Talent-focused schools, nations grow more aggressive towards one another. The demand for resources grows, and skirmishes at the border of Arka and Mistere become more frequent. Monsters run into the nations from the Wildes, terrorizing villages and cities. The need for trained or in-training Hunters and Guardians has never been more urgent.

Droplets of the evening sun coated the small student laboratory, filtered in through the windows. It was the only source of lighting, as the fake fluorescent lighting had been turned off for the sake of the experiment. There was plenty of light to see fortunately, but not for long. Dusk would eventually turn into night, which would signal that it was time for Inglisse to either head back to the dormitory or go feed her angsty phoenix.
She had permission to stay in the science laboratory after classes for the sake of catching up on homework and working on some of her personal projects. On the counter she had a smoky quartz crystal, a few of Fang’s black phoenix feathers, and the winged rosebud, Mister Peckings, napping on the other side of the counter next to a mulberry bonsai in a pot. Students could buy phoenix feathers online or at science and magic shops for a price, either for use in their experiments, magical charms, or even for fashion. For Inglisse, she only needed the ones Fang had provided to her in turn for his meals.
Sunlight kept pouring in-- Inglisse observed that she had another half hour before she would completely lose the light and ought to change projects or just go back to the dorm. For now, she would continue reading the open Book of Baskerville with a phoenix feather in hand.

It had only been about two and a half weeks since Oras had his little, rout with Inglisse over the book she had. His summoner had made it abundantly clear to him that it was extremely precious and personal to her, though it didn’t make much sense for a diary to be so heavily guarded and enchanted. Enchanted in such a very unique and unexpected way that caught even Oras off guard. Every time you turn the page, the order of the pages changes completely. So if you were on page thirty two, you could actually be touching the seventy fourth page. It was a fascinating enchantment and he wished he could understand it better. Unfortunately he didn’t have the ability to do something like that…….. Yet. It was still frustrating how the entire event had resulted in another argument between them though.
Instead of reacting calmly and logically like she normally did, she had reacted in complete and total emotion. Angered, hateful even, by the fact that he had indulged in his curiosity with the book, leading to him reading a few pages. She even seemed like she would have killed him on the spot, and he didn’t doubt that either. When she calmed down she told him she wrote personal things in between the notes, but that didn’t sound right to Oras. If it was a mixture of her notes and her diary, then he would have certainly seen comments on the former. And looking over the pages in his mind as he meditated, there was reason to believe that the notes in general were not her own. The handwriting did not match. Many times it didn’t match each other, almost as if many had written it. Perhaps it was a heritage he thought. Speaking of which, the most recent matter he had come across was on the first page…
When he had read the book that night he skimmed over one page because he was in a writing frenzy. Researching it and writing everything down on pages for Inglisse, as he observed she was attempting to document everything down (another reason he did not believe the book was originally her own). However when he began meditating on this, he found that the section where the owner of the book wrote down their name, the name written was Caroline Vanessa Baskerville. Ignoring the name Baskerville as it brought back bad memories, what caught his attention was that the handwriting was much like Inglisse’s own. Which meant she had lied about her true name. This had drawn out an interest in him and thus he made his way to her. He had grown quite skilled at learning where she was, and thus it didn’t take long to locate her in the laboratory. Stepping in he soundproofed the room and locked it with his ice. “You know, if the only time we ever hang out is by me chasing you down so I can protect you, or when we have to talk about something really really important. We should probably just schedule a time where we can just chill together.”

As the girl had managed to get a few barbs of the phoenix feather to melt inside the large smoky quartz crystal, a familiar presence drew near and once more the air chilled as he entered the room. He briskly soundproofed and sealed off the room, making Inglisse release a mildly irritated sigh. “Is your idea of “chilling” freezing me in a school lab? Why the secrecy?” she asked, gazing up from her work after she spoke and turning her amber eyes towards him.
Her delicate hands put the feather and barbs down. Mister Peckings seemed to notice the presence of the frosty man and took a running leap off the counter towards him, fruitlessly flapping its dove wings. It fell short of the atranoch, however, and landed at his feet instead. It did not seem hurt or fazed by its fall and after picking itself up, gently pawed at the white-haired man’s shoes. Inglisse silently noted she would need to give it some way to sense pain simply for the fact that it would stop being reckless and coming close to actually hurt or destroy itself. She trusted Oras enough to allow the animated rosebud to do as it pleased in the room, hoping that her summoned companion would not make any attempt to harm the creature she had created.
“I’d gladly schedule a time for tea or whatever you would like if you wish to do something a little more relaxing than hover in my classrooms,” she said politely before gazing back down at the quartz and tiny bundle of feathers, preparing to return to work.

Oras registered the sigh, though she didn’t seem to catch the meaning behind his words. Specifically the part about discussing something very important with her. There didn’t seem to be any trust or respect developed yet, even though he was doing his best. This game of theirs was getting tiresome very swiftly. If he was to be her summons, he wanted at the very least that. And preferably he wished to become good friends with her. The only pro to this was the fact that if she never gave a genuine smile or appeared happy, it was easier to talk with her. Even though having direct eye contact with her right now was a little bit disturbing for him it didn’t really effect him too greatly.
Before he could reply however, the creature she had made began moving over to him. When it was close enough he kept his cold temperature from spreading onto it as it pawed at him. Not wanting it to distract him from the conversation, he conjured up a little playground for it. One that was actually, and relatively safe for any child with minimal chances of it actually hurting itself out of ice. The temperature of the ice would be cool enough to not melt, but not cold enough to hurt it. After it was distracted he walked over to where the table was. Before he could get a word out however she spoke up again and he sighed before shaking his head. Tea? That’s all she could think of? Well, he supposed it was a start. However sometime soon he intended to get her out of this academy and just hang out. No researching, no tea… And if need be no fighting or adventuring. He didn’t know what she enjoyed or would want to do with her free hours other than her seemingly endless research. He didn’t tell her this of course, but he did move on to what he wanted to talk about.
“Is your name Caroline Vanessa… Baskerville? And if so why did you hide your identity?” His tone wasn’t aggressive. It wasn’t childish. In fact, there wasn’t any emotion behind it. It would be evident, that he wasn’t trying to tear her world apart, just asking. And if she was extremely observant, she may realize that he was simply trying to get to know her better via personality, history, likes and dislikes, and other things. Of course, only he knew that he was also attempting to find ways to establish trust with her.

Mister Peckings was quickly distracted by the icy playground created for it, its sightless sense of direction finding the mysterious new and cold mass nearby far more entertaining than the frosty man it had just been pawing at.
Inglisse silently began to put away the remaining phoenix feathers she had out, sensing by the fact that Oras had created a playground for the rosebud and the fact that he was moving closer to be signs that this would be a long and serious discussion. She had partially guessed that from his words, but wished that was not the case, and thus acted like it.
The question, however, was something she did not expect. Upon hearing her former name on his lips, her hands stopped cleaning up her scientific supplies. Her first instinct was to lie- to put on a smile, chuckle, and asked what he meant by that. However, he was an observant one. She knew that much about him, and knew that he would not ask such a question unless he had a suspicion backed by a decent amount of hints or evidence. The other part of her had been wanting to get things to work between her and the atranoch, despite at some points in time, this included, she wished she could cut off the bridge connecting his world and her own.
Amber eyes glanced briefly at the Book of Baskerville. Of course he had learned that name from that book. Even though she had asked he not meditate on it, it was evident that he had, or at least had seen the name listed enough and managed to pay attention to it back when reading. “Why do you ask?” she asked, deciding to not straightup lie, but only really imply the possibility of truth. She wanted to know what he knew about that name before she gave away any answers. Was it out of simple curiosity? Or did he know more about her late family than she wished he, or anyone, knew?

Oras was pretty sure he was right, but when her hands stopped moving he knew immediately he was in fact correct. The part of the brain that moved ones hands and such, was also the part of the brain that developed lies so it wasn’t much of a stretch to assume she was preparing to do so. However there was no guarantee, just a fifty fifty chance this was the case. The additional length of silence, plus the fact that she glanced at her book, gave him complete confirmation that she used a false name, and at least guessed where he got her full name. When he heard her question he scoffed. “Inglisse we both know the answer to that, especially if you recall what I had told you that night. Now tell me, is this your real name or not? And don’t try and lie to my face, I’m getting better at knowing when you’re lying and when you aren’t.”
He wasn’t giving her any loopholes or escapes. He wasn’t going to chase after every red herring she placed for him. He was going to point directly to his question repeatedly until she answered him honestly. There was no escaping this and she knew it. He wanted to push her to a point where she would acknowledge that not only would she not be able to keep any secrets from him, but that she shouldn’t. Eventually, this would lead to trust, and trust could lead to friendship. Despite Oras acting like a jackass, which he generally was. And despite him acting childish. He could very easily strategize, and often utilized that to help others or strengthen bonds.

Inglisse internally winced, knowing that he was right, but wishing she could get out of the situation. That name had not been said in many years. It had died with the rest of her family members. All she wanted now was security that Oras would not go dropping her past identity to anyone, but the sharper reply was not exactly reassuring. Then again, given his nature, he did not seem like one to go about spouting the business of others. His patronizing tone regarding her potentially lying certainly was annoying and did not make her feel any safer.
“That isn’t my name anymore. It’s Inglisse Carroll now,” she stated flatly, still staring at the Book of Baskerville, opened to a page on smokey quartz with an enchanted bookmark holding the phoenix page. Her amber eyes avoided his ice blue gaze. She now could only hope that it went without saying she did not want anyone else to know, and that he would respect that.

He saw her wince and begin processing the information carefully. Finally she gave a flat reply, only answering his question and nothing more. After that she turned to her book and opened it, focusing on that and not Oras. This position she was in right now.. It reminded him of himself at one point in his life. Trying to avoid contact with others in an attempt to avoid sharing something. Oras didn’t make any sound at first but then sighed and placed a hand on her shoulder. “Inglisse. I’m not planning to tell anyone about this. You are my summoner, and as such I’m loyal to you. Even if I discovered an extreme embarrassment that I could have fun with I would never tell or hint it to a living soul. You don’t have to worry about my knowing this.” He gently pushed the book away from her and waited for her to turn her attention back to him. When she did she would see that he was carrying a serious expression but not in the way she’d imagine. For his expression was a mixture of seriousness, compassion and empathy.
“Now. You do not have to answer me. But I would like to know why you changed your name. If something happened in your past, I’m asking if you would be willing to share it with me. And I in turn will answer any questions you have of my past. A fair warning if you do though: I have eighty plus years of history with my previous summoner, so your questions will need to be rather specific.”

He pushed the book away, which made her want to reach out and grab it again for security. It was really the only security blanket she had, the only possession she truly cared about. The cold hand on her shoulder took her by surprise however, as gentler words followed. She forced herself to meet his eyes and was once again taken slightly aback by the softer expression, one she never had really seen on his face before.
She really wished she could take his option of not answering his questions any further. However, the idea of reciprocating offered a little more security. There was a part of her deep down that had wished for the opportunity to open up at least a little. The feeling was so unnatural and foreign to her; she did not even know where to begin. “There was an accident a long time ago. My entire family suffered a fate worse than death. I pretended to die with them to avoid the attention and changed my name so I could keep living how I wanted to, not under constant scrutiny and attention,” she said softly, her amber eyes trailing from his blue ones back to the Book of Baskerville. It was all she had left from her family, after all, besides the anguished voices and screams within her mind of their sealed and tortured spirits.

To see her have such a shocked expression was heart warming for Oras. Or rather, heart cooling in his special case. Though technically he had no physical heart. Oras looked past Inglisse for a second and looked at the reader. You know what I’m talking about so I’ll stop trying to worry about describing it. When she spoke, her words were soft. The weight and pain of her past showing through her words, in what Oras was guessing was a first. He listened to her and was silent for a moment, in case she wanted to say more. When she finished however, she looked towards the book again. It was clear it was some sort of keepsake, meaning those notes were not her own after all. Or perhaps, just most of them. Even more so it was more likely her family’s before they died. One could say it was her escape.
Oras nodded softly, as well as in understanding. He’d witnessed people who went through tragic loss before. He’d even seen people’s soul shattered into fragments, each of those fragments shoved into individual bodies to become their own beings. However their lives were torment as they were only a fraction of a whole. Endlessly seeking each other out but forever severed from one another. He hesitated before speaking again. “May I ask, what happened to your family?” Two facts he had given her already. The first was that she didn’t have to answer if she did not wish to. The second was that he would never tell another living soul. And he would keep his word. However there was something he had learned over time… When you share your pain, your suffering, your story to others. The more you shared it. The easier it became. Especially with trusted friends.

When he asked, she felt compelled to tell him. The soft and gentle words were hardly something that was regularly used with her. It was difficult to think about it again, the events of that tragic day. Those scenes and that imagery haunted her dreams at night. Her nightmares were loud and vivid, and though she was now good about blocking out or ignore the shrill voices that cried out within her head, she still could not permanently silence them.
However, the detailed answer to his question was not so easily given. How much was wise to let on to him? She was given an out, to refuse to answer if she wished, but he had also reassured her that he would not tell a soul. Was he really that trustworthy? What if he did tell, would anyone believe her rather ridiculous past and if so, would it affect her present life? It was a gamble, of course. “They were all killed in a tragic accident,” she began, deciding to avoid the details of what it was specifically. Sacramentum was a topic she was not fond of touching on if she did not have to. Besides, that would shed too much light on her own unwanted talent. “Then some fool came around and tried to reverse the damage. Only, that person made it worse for my family, and for themselves,” Inglisse answered softly, gaze still focused on the book, a flash of pain shading her amber eyes. She hated that memory, and she hated herself for what she had done.

Given the very lacking description she chose to give, it was clear to Oras that she wasn’t going to tell him any time soon. Normally he’d just get the person to spill the details so he could help them quicker. Similar to with how he handled Ryse. However there were three reasons he did not intend to use this method with Inglisse. The first was that it was clear her situation was far more delicate than Ryse was. For Ryse it was a simple matter of helping her accept who she was and learn to fight the harsh words aiming for her. The second reason was the fact that this was his summoner, not a stranger whom he may never see again. He would be with her until one of them died, or until she just couldn’t stand the sight of him anymore. This was actually tied into the third reason: He wanted a stable friendship with her, and didn’t want to risk going to far and jeopardizing that friendship.
So instead of pressing for more information like he normally did he nodded. Showing he understood she didn’t wish to disclose more information than she had, and would respect her wishes. “I’m sorry you had to go through something like that Inglisse. It’s something I can see. Something I can hear… But it’s never something I’m able to experience. It often makes it hard when I see people suffering in these manners, and I lack the understanding to be able to help. However.” He took a few steps forward and placed his hands on her shoulders. “You aren’t alone anymore. You don’t have to hide anymore. If you need someone to talk with. I’m here. If you need someone to distract yourself with. I’m here. If you need someone to vent your frustrations out with. I’m here. Please remember this in the future. Please remember to come to me, instead of isolating yourself.”
Seeing her expression was making this feel a little awkward. Especially the physical contact. However he knew this was something that could help so he did it anyway. Even still he was beginning to crack. Barely containing the awkwardness. “Now, I’ve rarely done stuff like this so, please just.. Promise me. Promise me you will at least try to reach out, instead of isolating yourself.”

The blonde’s gaze trailed back up to meet Oras’ blue eyes as he spoke. She could only detect sincerity in them, and feel herself slightly relax more as he spoke. The words were something she was somewhat familiar with, but not in a sincere context. She had heard them uttered in situations where someone was being taken advantage of, and likely had used similar to lure people into a trap. When she was being herself however, and not just out to get what she needed for the sake of magic and science, words like that had never been shaped. Surely the atranoch was not about to use her information against her; would he really have anything to gain by doing that? With all his talk on truth and lies, she wanted to believe him. In this moment, it felt so easy, but beyond that, her doubts still festered. She had high walls built for the sake of keeping people out and protecting herself.
The two hands on her shoulders was also something that felt foreign. Unless she was being attacked or was participating in a training spar, nobody had ever placed their hands on her shoulders, especially not in a gentle and reassuring manner. It felt awkward, but with his words also there, it only reinforced the reassurance. She had never really “vented” her emotions or frustrations before. Emotions were private to her, not something she easily shared. She did not even really know how or where to begin. “I… can try,” she responded as he requested the promise. How could she promise something she barely understood? She never opened up unless she felt forced to, like in this situation. It felt too weird, too unsafe. Her amber eyes glanced back over at the rosebud creature, which had curled up on the ice playground for a brief nap; she wanted something to distract her from this moment. Anything to get her mind off of the strange and foreign emotions.

Oras closed his eyes and took a breath, relaxing himself a little bit before he let go of her shoulders and took a step back. “Alright. If you promise. I can attempt to help out on my end as well. Seeing as how I’m already having to track you down lately, if you need some encouragement to do so. I’ll give it.” After this he turned to look at her rosebud concoction, seemingly to check if it was ok. When in reality he was letting the blush come forward, his cheeks turning pure white for a moment before he was able to compose himself again. Why oh why did his summoner have to be a girl? These conversations were awkward enough with his previous summoner, but now he was having sentimental conversations with a girl. He was NOT ready for this day. Still, it was the next step so he had to take it. It was clear this was awkward for her as well, so it was really balanced. Both of them were awkward in this state, so he wasn’t alone in this. He turned his attention back towards Inglisse.
“Look, I know there are times you’ll hate my guts for the person I am. That’s just how individuals operate. But… Please remember the reason I exist in this world. I’m here for your sake, not my own. While I have my own personal goals I need met, your my primary concern. Please do not mistake this.” He placed his hand on his sword hilt to rest and sighed. “Now… As I’ve said before, if there is any question you wish to ask me in return, I shall answer honestly.”

His words were nothing more than confusion to the blonde. While she could certainly observe his sincerity, she doubted she would ever seek him out to just talk about herself. The idea of doing so was so foreign and strange. He finally let go of her shoulders and turned to check on Mister Peckings, presumably, who was curled up on the small ice playground, napping. “I can’t promise,” Inglisse stated as he was turned, her voice less softer than before, but still without malice or coldness. She could not make a promise for something she did not comprehend or understand. “I can try to remember.”
It was true she needed to remind herself that she had summoned him into that world. While he was not a servant or at her beck and call like most summons, he was still tied to her whether they both liked it or not. Surely with that bond, he would not straight up betray her. At least, she sincerely hoped he would not. Presently, he knew more about her than anyone else currently at the academy, possibly in the world. He then offered for her to ask him any questions she had. Inglisse thought for a moment. She had not had many questions for him, seeing as she wrote down most observations and still wished to be polite. Being courteous meant not prying too much unless there was good reason. Since she had the opportunity, however, she did think of one question. “How many summoners have you had in your lifetime? And what ends did they meet?” she asked, amber eyes staring up at his blue ones with curiosity. "And how many years have you been alive?"
