Yuuki was so excited for today. He was going out to a movie with his friends, and it’d been one they had been looking forward to for quite awhile now. His father was driving him, which was a weird change of pace. But there was little to be done for it since his mother had broken her arm and couldn’t drive for the mean time.
They were pulling up to the theater when Yuuki spotted his friends, five of them talking together. Twilight was upon them, and Meggi had her normal umbrella with the picture of an Australian shepherd puppy on it perched on her shoulder.
As the car came to a stop Meggi turned around and beamed at him, starting to walk over. Yuuki was about to open the car door when a broad arm came across his chest, barring him from leaving. “Who is that?”
“That’s Meggi. She’s a friend.”
His father gave him a look that would rival even a basilisk’s glare. “What are you, an idiot? That’s clearly a vampire.”
Yuuki snorted at the very idea. Meggi? A vampire? No way. “But look at her, she’s outside, and she doesn’t have fangs.”
His father groaned, rubbing at his temple. “You’d think considering the only you got from me is the eyes you’d actually be able to see it. Its an illusion charm Yuuki.” He was of course referring to one of his talents, True Sight. It was the ability to see through any illusion or transformation and see the true form of whatever lied beneath.
As it was, Yuuki hadn’t actually manifested any talent yet. It wasn’t for lack of trying. He found potions fun sometimes to mess around with, but that wasn’t exactly a talent.
As Meggi knocked on the window to see what was going on his father turned his fiery glare at her. She immediately took a step back, alarmed by the vitriol in that single look. Yuuto then stepped on the gas and sped out of the movie theater parking lot.
“Hey!” Yuuki shouted despite himself. “What the hell?!”
Yuuto smacked him across the back of the head for the indiscretion, raising his volume in turn. “I should be saying that to you! I thought I taught you better than to hang around the likes of inhuman scum like them! What kind of blind idiot are you that you can’t even see through a little charm!?”
Yuuki rubbed the back of his head, hunching down slightly as he did so. “I don’t have your talent…” He muttered in his own defense.
“Yah? Well you didn’t find the umbrella weird? There’s no rain. Context clues Yuuki. Context clues.”
Yuuki grimaced as his father mentioned the umbrella. “I dunno. I just thought she wanted to show it off because it was cute.” She was cute. But Yuuki wasn’t going to say that in front of his father of all people, not about a vampire. “But she hasn’t even bit me once!” Yuuki responded quickly, desperate to salvage something from this.
“Oh yah? How would you know? You can’t even see past a simple illusion charm. You think you’re strong enough to beat a vampire’s hypnotism? They could make you forget just as simple as this.” His father snapped at the last word.
“But I don’t have any marks!” There was no way she could have done it.
“There’s easy ways to heal those up quickly to leave no evidence. There’s no reason for a bloodsucking vermin like them to be “friends” with a human if not for their blood. Why else would she hide what she is from all of you? Its to get close so she can drink your blood!”
Yuuki felt doubt growing into his own mind as his father met every one of his points with a counter. He felt at his neck, wondering if perhaps Meggi had bitten him a few times. “What do you want me to do? Just stop hanging out with her? She’s my friend.”
“She’s just pretending Yuuki. Trust me on this. I know what’s best for you.”
“But-“
His father cut him off with a glare that rivaled a basilisk’s. “If you see them again there will be consequences. As your father it is my responsibility to protect you. Even from yourself. You’re too naive and trusting for your own good.”
Yuuki felt his blood chill at the word consequences. For him? Or for Meggi? He choked on his words for a moment before finally managing to speak. “But… But… If… If I push her away I’ll loose them all as friends.” They all loved Meggi, and they would probably still like her even if they knew the truth.
“If that’s what needs to be done. I’ll be damned if my son becomes a blood bank for an over glorified leech.” His father said with a note of finality. His hands were clenched to the wheel hard enough to turn his knuckles white. Silence descended on the vehicle, Yuuki too nervous to say anything else lest he set his father off even further. He kept his gaze down, fiddling with the strings of his hoodie.
After about twenty minutes Yuuto opened up the sunroof with a push of a button, then the car pulled over and slowed to a stop. Yuuki gave a start, looking out of the window. They were nowhere near home. He didn’t even recognize this area.
“Out.”
“But-“
“I SAID OUT!” His father shouted at him, the force of the shout alone sending Yuuki fleeing from the vehicle before things could escalate any further.
Before shutting the door he turned around. “Can I at least have my phone back?”
His father pulled out the phone, for a moment seeming to be offering it to his son before throwing out of the open sunroof and in front of the car, where he then promptly ran it over. Yuuto peeled out rapidly, leaving Yuuki in the dust.
He picked up his utterly crushed phone, putting it in his hoodie pocket. He was going to guess the warranty wouldn’t cover fathers who had willfully destroyed their son’s phone. But it couldn’t hurt to see if they could get away with saying that it was an accident. They did not have the finances to pay for another destroyed phone.
Ozaki sighed wearily, walking off the road and mentally debating whether it would be quicker to walk towards the movie theater and get a ride back home with one of his friends. They’d have to drop him off a block away from his home or something, but it’d be better than the alternative. He didn’t have his app to tell him the way, so if he went along the road his father had been driving he’d just have to hope he came across a gas station he could ask directions from.
Maybe hitchhike a ride. Yuuki ran his hands through his hair. What the hell was his father thinking? As he was still deciding what to do he saw his father’s car turn around rapidly. Oh… So he wasn’t really going to leave him. The sense of relief was short lived however, as the car sped by him. Back toward the movie theater.
He wouldn’t. Sure his father had always had a temper but… He wouldn’t. Half out of habit, the other half out of desperation, he pulled his broken phone out of his pocket. If only he could call his mother. She’d always had an almost magical ability to calm him down even from the worst of his rages. Or his friends, to warn them that his father was coming.
The police? No. Surely even his father wouldn’t go that far.

Meggi lived rather close to the movie theater where they had gone, so she had opted to walk home rather than accept the ride her friends had offered her. It was far too nice a night to get in one of those stuffy cars.
It was a rejection she’d sorely end up regretting when a burst of holy light came out of seemingly no where, the alley way she had been walking through was as bright as day. Through the light she could see the large form of Yuuto stroll towards her, the holy light shining from his left hand. In his right was a large wooden stake.
Meggi reached for her puppy umbrella and opened it, ducking behind it to shield herself from the light attack. “What the hell are you doing?! You’re Yuuki’s father, aren’t you? Why are you trying to kill me?” This didn’t make any sense. He hadn’t seemed happy to see her at the movie theater, sure. But this was over the top, even if he had realized what he was.
“The fact that you’re a vampire would be enough to damn you. But I could let that go. If you hadn’t gone after my son.”
“Your son? I never touched him.”
“Why would I believe a plague ridden rodent like you?”
“Because I’m not lying!” She shouted at him, in desperation activating her talent, which was one that summoned a pack of dogs to defend her.
She peeked out from behind her umbrella just in time to see the holy light morph into flame, burning the summoned creatures to ash. Meggi started back pedaling as quickly as she could, keeping her umbrella in front of her as she did so to block the light. “You can’t do this! I’m with the Bloods! If you kill me, they’ll come after you. They’ll find you!”
“You think dare threaten me?! My family?!?” Yuuto growled, pushing the umbrella to the side and shoving the stake into her chest with a heave. The puppy dog umbrella fell to the ground as her body disintegrated into ash. Yuuto brushed off some of the ash that had gotten on his forearm with a disdainful growl. “They should be the ones afraid of me coming after them.”
He wouldn’t let any of these monsters harm his family. If the Bloods really did find out it was him and come looking for revenge… Better to get to them first. Yuuto reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone, dialing a number rapidly. “Hey Richard… Yah its me… Ever heard of The Bloods?… I think its just about time we wiped out that infestation, don’t you? … Good. We’ll rally the Church of Purity next mass.”
