welcome to Eldritch Academy
In a world of myths and mysteries, the pinnacle of the magical academies exists. Eldritch Academy offers education to all ages and species but specializes in the study and training of one's innate mystical capabilities, often called Eldritch Energies, Powers, or Unknowns, but more formally known as their Talent. However, tensions run high with the nations only holding a fragile peace as the Talents that rival the epitomes of technology change the balance of power.
With the more recent uprising of evil Shades and introduction of combat-oriented programs into Talent-focused schools, nations grow more aggressive towards one another. The demand for resources grows, and skirmishes at the border of Arka and Mistere become more frequent. Monsters run into the nations from the Wildes, terrorizing villages and cities. The need for trained or in-training Hunters and Guardians has never been more urgent.

Oras sat on a cliffside off in the forest just outside Ryse’s home. Specifically, eating synthetic ice. It had a revolting taste to it, which made sense since it was real ice. Still, it didn’t matter all that much what it tasted like. As long as he was recharging on energy he didn’t care. And he’d need the energy tonight. He knew everything that would be unfolding this night. He’d planned it out all so very, very carefully. All the pieces were in place.. This was actually going a whole lot smoother than he thought. He actually worried about being double crossed, and double checked that concern before he officially decided to go through with tonight. After munching on his ice for a little bit, watching both Ryse and her mother leave the house. Obeying the letter he left which gave them a set of coordinates to follow. He might as well be eating popcorn right about now, heh. The note told them he had a gift waiting in a small den on the other side of the forest. He wondered how this night would make them react…
Either way Oras would simply wait this out. A figure behind him shuffled as Oras chewed. "You are rather calm for what you've set up... How cruel can you possibly be Atranoch?" Oras waved a dismissive hand at the figure. "Oh hush your mouth you old fart. If you remembered anything you'd understand to trust my judgement on this. Nothing horrible will happen. The fire flower only blooms after it's been scorched. So lighten up. The burns won't be deeper than the scars already in place."

"Do you know where we're going?" Ryse asked as she followed her mother through the forest. It was the middle of the night, and normally she would be sleeping. The note Oras had left, however, had told them to go to a cave on this night specifically, so off they went, Ryse in her hybrid form and her mother in her phoenix form.
The older woman looked back at her. "I know the location of the cave, yes. Why your friend wanted us to get this.... gift... in the middle of the night at a place so far away from the house is concerning me. He knows about our kind. He knows we're at our weakest at night."
"He'll be there, don't worry." Ryse replied. Even as she said it, however, her heart beat a little faster in nervousness. The circumstances were irregular, even for Oras. But she would trust him anyways. The Atronach probably had an explanation for this.
The two continued through the forest, flying around trees as the full moon shone down on them, illuminating their path. Leaves swept into the air as they passed overhead, swirling around before landing on the ground once again. Some birds that were sleeping took flight, startled by their sudden appearance, cawing into the night. Gleaming eyes peered at them from the shadows, but the two took no heed of them. They were in no danger from the denizens that lived here. Ariza would burn them to ashes before they could try anything.

As the two family members began to head into the forest Oras stood up and walked to the edge of the cliff. Walking off of it and landing on a tree, he froze it’s leaves as he walked from treetop to treetop. The figure moved silently along with him. “Even if this ends for the better, it’s stil cruel.” Oras sighed as he finished his ice before turning to look at the figure. “Would you please stop focusing on the negative? It’s the only way to do it legally, which if I recall you claimed to be the only right way back in the day. Whatever happened to that little mentality hmm?” “I grew up.” The figure said. Oras rolled his eyes. “Oh you grew up. You know everyone who thinks age creates wisdom falls into the same damn trap: ‘I’m wise now, I can’t possibly be wrong.’ Well screw you and that mentality you sack of meat.” The figure sighed in annoyance. “Just as stubborn as ever I see.” “You got that right.”
As they walked along the treetops Oras was close enough to be able to hear the two of them and their conversation. The mother of course was right to be concerned, but. Hearing Ryse tell her mother that Oras would certainly be there. So sure of the glacier Atranoch… “She doesn’t know does she? What happens when this is all over?” Oras didn’t say anything to the figure for a while. “My new summoner isn’t like my first one.. She doesn’t wander or travel all over creation. Who knows? Maybe this time the universe will throw me one.” “The universe could care less about your needs Oras. Remember that.” Oras sighed. “Yeah… I know. A guy can hope though.”
Eventually the two of them would be oh so close to the den. To the point where if they walked a little further they would have seen it… Would have that is.
Chains of water came out of nowhere. Reaching out from the ground and from mid air, completely blocking both of their paths of escape whether that be on the ground or in the sky. Immediately after this, the chains closed in and wrapped around the two of them. Physical chains of water binding the two fire birds down. Their assailants emerged from the woods and the two would see young phoenixes, most likely the friends of the ones Oras and Ryse’s mother had killed, as well as said dead one’s parents. All of them with vicious glee at their new chance here. It was impossible to determine who was the one controlling the chains of water. There were thirteen phoenixes and two that were in human form. The human forms were carrying a sword and shield, all of them clearly ready to beat them up.
One of the phoenixes stepped forward. “For committing murder, betraying your husband, and producing an abomination such as this, we’ve agreed to kill you both. Here and now. If and when you struggle, we will put you through unspeakable pain.” Oras watched from a treetop, quiet and silent. The figure was watching him carefully as Oras spoke. “Everyone’s in position right? I hope they’re all gonna watch.” “Are you going to reveal your true form yet?” “No not yet. Only after undeniable proof has been shown. After that you’ll get what you want and see me beat the living shit out of them all.”

"M-mom?" Ryse's voice wavered as she looked at the group surrounding them, eyes wide and body shaking in terror. She struggled against the chains holding her, but was unable to break free. Her heart beat rapidly in her chest, and the hybrid looked at the malicious gazes aimed at her.
Ariza's eyes flashed dangerously as she stood over her daughter protectively. Even captured like this she would still be an imposing figure. Instead of replying to their capturers, she gave a shrill shriek, loud and ear piercing enough to make several of the phoenixes cringe. As she did so, she ignited into flames and unleashed a torrent of heat and blue fire that would explode from her and light up the night sky, blinding their opponents for a moment. It would be the equivalent of a bomb going off, only this would be a fifty times brighter and hotter than any normal bomb, aimed at everyone except for Ryse. Usually this amount of fire would evaporate the chains instantly if it had been day. But since it was the dead of night, the fire was weaker than normal and would make the chains only slightly easier to bend and twist. However, even this momentary distraction could be used to her advantage.
The older phoenix managed to get one of her wings out of the chains and would begin blasting the enemies with fire, heating the ground at the enemies's feet to be practically boiling. Literal lava would burst from the ground, flowing rapidly towards the group like a hungry monster waiting to devour them. It would be clear from the strained expression on her face and the slightly hunched position that it was taking all of her concentration and energy to do this, as because it was night doing this was much more difficult. If she were a lesser phoenix, such a feat would've been impossible. But she was a mother protecting her child; and nobody messed with her daughter. Nobody
While this was happening, Ryse continued to struggle. She wasn't sure if she changed form that the chains would tighten or if it would just drop away. But she knew if she was human she would be in even more danger than she would be in the form she was in right now. She didn't want to die tonight, but she didn't have her fire. Her mother may be able to do things such as this, but she didn't have her fire. The best thing she could do is cast small flames. Something that wouldn't help in this situation. She wasn't sure what to do. She had to do something, but what?

While most of the phoenix’s were blinded and stunned, the more experienced fighters were not. They called out to their allies, warning them about the incoming lava attacks, and they were able to evade appropriately. The heat below their feet was uncomfortable, but a combination of their natural resistance to flames as well as the fact that her powers were drained at this time of night, they were able to resist the pain, let alone the damage from it. While she had quite the comeback to their ambush, it wasn’t good enough. One of the parent’s who was also a fighter rallied the others and reminded them of their advantage in numbers. The Phoenix who conjured the water chains summoned more of them while also causing the clouds in the skies to gather. In a few minutes it would be pouring rain. Before that happened however, one of them began filling the air with lightning, forcing her to land or be electrocuted.
On the ground things only got worse. The earth shook violently as fissures emerged, causing gravity itself to become their ally as the lava would want to sink back into the earth unless she used more energy to keep it up. The rest of them would engage in melee combat, surrounding her. The veteran’s facing her with their claws and the less experienced two with swords. While all this happened, a torrent of water shot up around Ryse, twisting and twirling like an aquatic tornado. Three of the weaker Phoenixes leaped in before it fully conjured and began to viciously beat and scratch Ryse.
This entire event only took a matter of seconds. The entire forest erupting in chaos and turmoil. Just as it did Oras said to the figure: “Now it’s time.” Shifting into his eight foot form, spreading his wings and leaping down towards the carnage. The second he landed he let his power erupt from him, freezing literally everything in sight. Regardless of whether it was flying dirt, moving water, electricity in the air, fire or lava. Everything froze solid. His eyes flashed and glowed brightly before he drew his sword which grew to match his new size. In the blink of an eye he shot forward and slashed three of the attackers assaulting Ryse’s mother. He then shattered everything he froze and sent every shard hurdling towards the other phoenixes. Some already tried to flee but stopped dead in their tracks as they witnessed their nation’s military charging in from every direction preparing to arrest them. And not Ryse or her mother.

As the attacks subsided and the sky cleared, leaving a clear moonlit night once again, Ariza stood there, watching as the military arrived and surrounded their attackers. She panted heavily, almost sagging from exhaustion from the amount of energy she'd spent using her powers. She was wet from the rain that poured on her, however briefly. Pain ran through her, blood dripping down her feathers and soaking the ground. Deep claw marks scoured her back and several sword slashes at her sides, evidence that they’d hit her while she was unable to fight back, wrapped in chains. It was only her concern for her daughter that kept her upright.
Turning her head as she felt a furry wet body press close to her own, she nuzzled Ryse comfortingly, spreading a massive wing and draping it over her like a blanket. She was surprised that the military had shown up at all, and even more surprised that it seemed to be Oras that had brought them. But her daughter came first. She needed to make sure she was alright before turning her attention to anything else. "It's alright, dear. We're safe. Why don't you let me see those injuries, hm?"
Ryse shivered, ears flat against her head as she pressed very closely to her mother. Her dark grey fur and feathers were plastered to her body, drenched from the water tornado that shouldn't have been possible on dry land yet had happened anyways. It made her look smaller than she normally was; like a puppy rather than a fully grown dog. She was covered in scratches, claw marks, several of her ribs and one of her wings was definitely broken, and she knew she would have bruises the next morning. She was frozen in fear, still picturing the phoenixes beating her, about to kill her. She could still see the malicious glee in their eyes. But upon feeling the warmth from a comforting wing wrapped around her, she was pulled out of it. She saw the smile on her mother’s face. The pain that she tried to hide but failed in doing so.
“N-no mom. You’re too hurt to heal anyone like that.” Turning back into human form, she bit her lip hard to keep from crying out, tasting copper as a result. The young phoenix hybrid took a few breaths to gather herself, fighting against the pain screaming at her, before turning to her mother. Closing her eyes to concentrate, she clasped her hands together and summoned a spark of fire, turning her normal orange-ish flames into healing blue ones.
As her daughter was doing this, Ariza closed her eyes as well, though not from concentration. A strong wave of dizziness overcame her, making the world spin in front of her eyes and making everyone look like blobs of color instead of identifiable shapes. Using as much energy as she had left her drained, and the pain had finally gotten to her. If she just rested, she would be alright.
“....mom? Mom?! Hey!”
Blinking open heavy eyelids, the phoenix looked to see a blob she recognized as her daughter’s worried, tear-stained face gazing down at her, her hands glowing blue as she’d ran the fire over her, feeling warmth as Ryse tried to heal her. The older phoenix was lying on her side where before she’d been standing, a pool of blood gathering around her. “I’ll be… okay.” Ariza murmured softly, slowly raising a wing to gently stroke Ryse’s cheek, although the action was hard for her to do. “I just need… to rest… for a moment.”
Ryse shook her head, tears gathering in her eyes. “Don’t say that! I can… I can help you! Just don’t go to sleep! Understand?!” The older phoenixes’ heartbeat was far slower than normal, and her breathing was raspy, as though she couldn’t take a full breath. The injuries were bad, according to what she saw as she assessed her mother's condition with her flames; very bad. She knew she was hurt, but she didn't think it was this bad! Damn it!! WHY did her fire have to be so weak?! Why did it have to be night, of all times?! Why could she not use her healing ability as well when she needed it most!!

Oras looked up at the raincloud that was conjured by one of the phoenixes and rolled his eyes before freezing it solid. He was using up lots of energy, but he didn’t really care. Why? Cause the fight was already over. He then turned the ice into falling snow. Specifically the healing snow he used to mend wounds. Only this snow wasn’t falling in flakes. No far from it. While Ryse and her mother tried to heal her wounds, the mass of snow plopped down over them. While it would feel a bit cold, it would also feel extremely fluffy, soothing and comfortable as it mended their wounds… Slowly albeit, but still mended them. Oras walked over to the mass of snow waiting for their heads to pop out. “I hope you guys have a bit of energy left cause you’re going to want to see this.” He gestured around them and they would see their assailants being put under arrest as the council themselves approached the scene. The figure who’d been following Oras glided down, showing to be one of the elder council members.
“Your berserker state is always an interesting phenomenon to watch Oras. You always were a curious one.” Oras waved a dismissive hand. “I can take any form I want. That form was designed specifically for combat, I don’t see how that’s interesting.” Ryse and her mother would then hear the council speak to everyone.
“The thirteen Phoenixes being arrested today are hereby being charged for attempted murder and aggravation, and are hereby sentenced: The three veterans are sentenced to the Null Lantern, while those who followed these veterans blindly are sentenced to the Aubade. This will be held in a public display to remind others that none shall escape the consequences of their actions. Should another attempt be discovered the consequences shall be more severe.” They wouldn’t say anything about Ryse’s half breed state, nor about her mother of course. They wished to stay as neutral as they possibly could to avoid any sort of publicity. This was a punishment for assaulting and harassing someone, nothing more. Still, this act alone would prevent anyone from messing with Ryse or her family again. Oras watched as one of the councilwomen approached him. Her eyes piercing his own with an unreadable expression. “We’ve done as you asked mister Auro. I assume our favor has ended?”
“Yeah yeah, you guys get out of here. I know you can’t stand the thought that someone else is smarter than you, so go back to where the idiots bask in your glory.” The woman’s eyes flashed for half a second before she turned and walked away with the other councilmen and women. Oras turned back into a human form and stretched his arms. “Man, that was quicker and more boring than I thought. Oh well, sacrificing what I want for what they need…”

The healing snow did help. The scratches on Ryse closed and stopped bleeding, fading away completely. The claw marks were still there, but they were healing as well, slowly. Her ribs still ached greatly and she knew her wing would ache as well when she transformed back into her hybrid form, but those broken bones were being fixed as well.
For Ariza, however, the snow couldn't do much. Her wounds were healing, but too slowly to really make a difference in her health. The older phoenix couldn't see the council, as she couldn't lift her head, but she could hear the words they were saying. She gave a small smile as she realized what the council's words would mean; her family would be safe. The phoenixes wouldn't hurt them or threaten them ever again. With that thought in mind, she closed her eyes.
Ryse smiled brightly despite the pain she was still in. Her hands were still on her mother, still using her fire to try and stop the bleeding as much as she could. She'd only turned her attention away for just a few moments so she could see what would happen to their attackers. She was happy that the other phoenixes were being arrested, and those that led the attack would be gone forever. It meant the other phoenixes would bully her anymore, or call her names, or reject her simply because she was what she was. But upon feeling the fire shudder, and then flicker away even though she hadn't dispelled it, made her snap her gaze back to her mother. Her blood froze in her veins; the phoenix was still.
Much too still.
"Mom?"
Moving a shaky hand to her neck, the teenager found there wasn't a pulse. Her heart wasn't beating. 'No.... no no no no NO!' As she watched, however, the phoenix began glowing. The light grew in intensity, until it grew so bright that she couldn't look at it and had to shut her eyes, turning her head away. When the light died and she opened her eyes again, her mother was no longer there. Instead of a phoenix lying there, there was only an orange egg, made of various shades of orange and red, covered in swirling patterns as though it was made of fire itself.
Tears spilled down Ryse's cheeks as she gently picked up the egg and held it to her chest. She knew her mother wasn't permanently dead. Once she completed her trial, she would hatch and regrow, and be back to normal. But she'd never seen her mother die before. It was something she never wanted to see again.

Oras turned when he heard her cry out mom and saw the still phoenix. “…Shit… Damnit, damnit, shit shit shit!” He rushed over to her side and looked at her wounds. “…..” He watched as her mother flashed brightly. He watched her body turn into flames, then embers, then shape into an egg and harden. And after that had occurred, Ryse pulled her mother in closely. Oras didn’t say anything for a while. He could see how much pain she was in. A councilman walked by and paused, looking at the egg. “Hmm.. A pity the veteran could not survive the assault. I do hope we do not lose a soldier such as herself to the trials." As the councilman walked away Oras just glared at him. He hated his type.
"Oh she'll be back home in a day or two, mark my words..." He turned to look at Ryse. “…Hey, I’m… I’m sorry you had to see her die. It wasn’t supposed to turn out like that.” His hand tightened around the necklace Ariza had given him. Bring him luck huh? Looks to him like it never did much at all. His luck was the same as always. The only reason at least one of them was ok was due to him being smart enough to gather an army before returning. Figures…
Oras offered to help her up to her feet.

Ryse accepted the Atronach's help, wincing as she moved to stand beside him, hugging the egg to her chest. She glanced at him as he apologized to her, wiping the tears away with a hand even though her lip trembled and her voice wavered. "I know she's coming back, but... I've never..."
'I've never seen somebody die.' The words were stuck in her throat, unable to say them.
"You couldn't have known this would happen." She said instead, shaking her head. "It's not like you can see into the future. I'm glad you were there when you were. And you brought help with you." She sniffled a bit, but didn't cry again. "We were lucky you were there. If you hadn't been... it would've.... been worse."
Exactly how much worse, she didn't say. There was no need to. They would've killed both her and her mother without a care in the world, and she knew it.

Oras knew she was going to be furious with him for having set this whole thing up so he figured he’d just get this out of the way. He sighed and shook his head. “No it is my fault cause I set it up. I knew they’d be looking for you and would try getting revenge. I convinced the council to bring their men so they could arrest them after a very long conversation. They aren’t easily swayed after all. After that we knew they couldn’t arrest them without undeniable proof of their actions. The idea was once they started the ambush, the threat, and made a move to attack we’d intervene. Your mom making such a lightshow was unexpected and slowed us down. I didn’t consider the variables. So yes it’s my fault.” He fell silent, letting her get any and all wrath out on him. What he nor Ryse would realize was that someone else was watching from the shadows. Observing the two of them.

Her eyes widened as she heard this. "You... you planned this?" She took a step away from him, confused and slightly bewildered. "You knew they were going to attack us? That's why you sent us here, so they'd find us....?"
The world seemed to tilt sideways. She heard what he was saying. That the council had needed physical evidence before they did anything or arrested the perpetrators. But her brain had trouble processing it. "M-my mom.... she died because of this plan." She snapped out of it and glared at the Atronach. "She died because those phoenixes found us! And you led us straight to them!"
If this had been day, the air would be shimmering at this moment. But she didn't have her fire, and she was tired and in pain. The best she could do was glare. She turned her back to him, taking a few breaths, struggling to calm herself. Getting mad wouldn't make the situation better, even if she had a right to be. What was done was done. It was over with. The attackers were arrested. They wouldn't be bothering them again. But even so...
"....what if it had been me?" She whispered, looking down at her mother's egg with dark eyes. "What if I had died instead? My mother can be reborn when she dies. I don't know if the same will happen to me, or if... I'll just fade away. Did you think of that, Oras, when you made this plan?"
She turned back to face him. There was no anger in her eyes, only a solemn expression. "Tell me you thought of all the possible ways this scenario could have gone." He had planned this after all; surely he'd known it was a possibility that one or both of them could wind up severely injured or dead.

Oras was silent the entire time she ranted at him. He said nothing until her last questions. However, he was surprised she didn’t stay mad at him. She was clearly bitter, but she wasn’t letting it get to her… This was one of the reasons he didn’t let people know he had friends. He made promises, and broke them. It was all in the name of helping them, and most of the time it did. This was why he told Ryse’s mother that she could never tell her daughter he saw her as a friend. Because he knew that one day, she wouldn’t want to be his friend. And he’d rather hshe had no guilt or regrets when she made that decision. So when she asked him if he thought of i when he made the plan. He nodded honestly. “It was a small chance it would happen and I let my faith in my skills get in the way. I thought I could keep mortal wounds from occurring or at least keep them from killing anyone with my snow. It’s my fault she’s been killed.”
Oras’s face and eyes held no expression at all. It was all he could to keep the fear from showing. The fear of being rejected by her for something he’d done. If she wished to be angry he would have her channel that hatred into him and him alone. He turned and started walking away. “I’ll let the school know you’ll be gone a bit longer. If you want you can take normal transportation home. If you decide that, then I’ll tell them it will be a week or two before you return home. Don't worry, they’ll punish me not you. I know it’s not worth shit but. I’m sorry..”

"......Wait." Ryse grabbed ahold of his hand, attempting to halt him. She looked him in the eyes.
"I um... don't... know the way home from here." She hadn't been this far from her house before. While her mom had known where this cave was located, she did not. Normally she could smell her way back, but there were too many different scents to be able to pick out the now faint trail leading back to her home. "I was wondering if you could take me - I mean, um, us - back there?" It was strange calling the egg she held in her arms her mother, but that was what it was.
It was slightly comforting to hear Oras admit that he'd been too sure of himself. Usually he was cocky and arrogant, and sure that everything would turn out just how he thought it would. "I don't know how long trials usually take, so I'll be back later anyways because of that. I'm not leaving my mom alone while she's still an egg. Or a chick."
She looked away from the Atronach, gathering her thoughts, before she looked back at him again. "I still want to go back to the school with you. But can you tell the school I'll be back later than expected tomorrow? I'd... feel safer if there was someone else besides just me in the house. And I'll need someone to help me with my mom when she hatches. I don't really know anything about this."
She was still upset with him, even after he'd apologized, but the fact that he'd admitted he was wrong and apologized quelled some of her anger. Basically she was asking him to spend the night in the house with her. And to help her with her mother until she was fully grown again.

Oras closed his eyes when she grabbed him, wishing they could just get it over with and move on. But no, he had to have another spark of hope didn’t he? He opened his eyes when she stood in front of him and looked into hers as she did his. His eyes revealing none of the emotions swirling within him. When she mentioned how she didn’t know her way back he was going to answer by just pointing where the house was. Before he could she continued, asking if he could take her and her mother back home. Oras was going to tell her not to be a baby but stopped from saying that. Even if he was a jackass, he wasn’t so ruthless as to force an untrained girl and her egg of a mother to go without some kind of protection after this. He sighed. “Alright.”
Hearing her next words he nodded in understanding. “The trials depend on the Phoenix’s moral willpower and compass. Your mother should be back in a few days. Three tops.” He went back to being silent, and she did as well for a short while. Then however she spoke up again, stating how she still wanted to go back to school with him. So she wasn’t ready to shatter him to pieces yet. Cool. At least he’d have a bit more time with her. When she continued however his eyes widened, though she wouldn’t have caught it due to him looking away when it happened. No no, not that kind of time with her. Hell no. He could almost hear the universe laugh at him for this. A twig snapped in the distance, giving an excuse to what he was about to yell: “Oh freaking shut up already!” He yelled, an Ember Squirrel chattering angrily at him. He still heard the universe laughing and gave up.
Ryse probably wouldn’t know what it meant yet, but his face became slightly whiter than usual. His expression was still serious, if not a bit more focused seemingly. “Oh yeah? And how would your mother feel about you being all alone with a jackass who killed her off? Pretty sure she’d be against it.”
