welcome to Eldritch Academy
In a world of myths and mysteries, the pinnacle of the magical academies exists. Eldritch Academy offers education to all ages and species but specializes in the study and training of one's innate mystical capabilities, often called Eldritch Energies, Powers, or Unknowns, but more formally known as their Talent. However, tensions run high with the nations only holding a fragile peace as the Talents that rival the epitomes of technology change the balance of power.
With the more recent uprising of evil Shades and introduction of combat-oriented programs into Talent-focused schools, nations grow more aggressive towards one another. The demand for resources grows, and skirmishes at the border of Arka and Mistere become more frequent. Monsters run into the nations from the Wildes, terrorizing villages and cities. The need for trained or in-training Hunters and Guardians has never been more urgent.

The Nightmare would sigh softly at the response given a he reached up and began to play with a stray piece of hair. “'None of your business.' You certainly like to use that phrase a lot don’t you…” he would grumble a bit annoyed at the answer that answered nothing as usual. Even so he didn’t go to war over this as he just let that bit of conversation go where it was going to go. Did this make him less curious? No, but at the same time he was in no mood to play another game of pulling teeth. Nor was he in the mood for lies either. The other seemed to catch on to the latter part of his mood for his next words were honest enough.
The Nightmare would frown at the words. “And what exactly are we avoiding that it is better to go this way instead?” So much for trying to push the Nightmare away from questioning the matter. He would like to know if he had a threat or something to be concerned about after all.
Meanwhile the bird was cozy in its nest of hair as it simply watched the world and the show with hollow eyes.

Ozaki had to repress a groan at Rika’s pushing at what or who was in that direction. Rika wasn’t going to let this go. “Some people that I want to avoid for reasons. And would be best not to go confront while in the company of a student or someone else. That a good enough answer for you?” Probably not.
The vampire’s eyes went up to the raven now, his mind a bit more preoccupied with the bird now. Was that a talent of the Nightmare’s? Or a pet? Could he control it? He had both questions and ideas for the potential beast tamer in his midst, but given how obstinate he was being it did not feel proper to ask about any of that. Nor press in the direction he might consider. It was kind of a dumb thing anyways. Well it wasn’t but…

The Nightmare was quiet for a moment as the other gave him an answer that wasn’t exactly satisfying to the curiosity within; however, there was another part of the Nightmare that reined him in a bit. The darker side that had a much different form of curiosity. The inward check, simply caused the Nightmare to huff a bit. “Not exactly. I would like to know what said people were; however, I will not push you…for now.” Well at least the answer was honest. Anyway…
Oho? What was this?
As the vampire’s eyes went to the bird resting on the Nightmare’s head, the skull headed crow would tilt its head one way and then the other before puffing itself up a bit, trying to make itself look impressive since it had someone eyeing it no doubt. Taking note of the vampire more so than the bird on his head, the Nightmare would raise an eyebrow.
“Do I have to perform a mind dive to get you to speak what is on your mind? You know you are as free to poke me for information as I do you, don’t you?” the Nightmare would say, leaving an invitation of a kind for the other who seemed to have curiosities of his own he left unspoken.

Questions? What? Oh right. The Dreamweaver had likely sensed his curiosity towards the bird. Oh wait. Dreamweaver’s were more keen to negative emotions. No. Rika was just reading the signs. Duh.
Heh… Vain little thing it seemed. He would like to ask Rika questions for sure. Anything to get the topic off himself. He had revealed to Rika more than he would have liked the other day first in his borderline blood raged self, then in his drugged state. But he’d rather not Rika know more than he had to. Particularly not in regards to the gang currently stalking him for unknown reasons. Most likely to do with the fact he had kidnapped then tried to kill their boss.
“I would prefer you didn’t.” Ozaki said in reply to the mind dive thing, allowing a bit of an edge to creep into his voice. “I was curious as to whether that bird was a pet or associated with your talent.”

The Dreamweaver was indeed simply picking up on signs. While it was true that he did pick up on negative emotions, he didn't use them to determine all things. He did like to use his own mind after all. Would be a waste not to use it.
In any case, whether the vampire wanted Rika involved or not in his personal affairs, the Nightmare would probably continue to dig and poke, but for the moment it seemed he was giving the guy a breather. How long would that last? Who knew, but for now he was opening the door to allow the other to poke at him now if he wished.
He would catch the way the other responded to the mind dive thing and smirked as he nodded. “Good. Then I expect you to open your mouth more.” A simple statement with a lot of truth behind it. The Nightmare could handle a bit of vagueness, but being difficult made the curious Nightmare a bit of an issue at times. While he was respectful enough, he could be pushed to do things not exactly kind to get what he wanted. Though he tried his best to keep that side of him in check. That aside when it came to the question of the bird, the Nightmare would hum.
“Memy is not a pet. She is a friend that comes around often. She followed me from the other side and likes to use my head as a nest. There are other birds of black feathers that like to gather around me at times, but she is a constant. Though what is a talent in this sense?” If the other was asking if this was some sort of trick he practiced then that answer was no. He wasn’t quite sure why birds were drawn to him. They just were.

Ah. A Nachtmyrr most likely then. Ozaki momentarily wondered if Rika was asking what a talent was or what it meant in this particular scenario. He was assuming the second for now. “Some people have talents that are centered around beast taming… Not that that’s always the right term for it of course. It can help you to command them better or enhance certain qualities of their’s.” Talents could have odd quirks, including the tendency to attract certain types of animals.
Ozaki reached into his trench coat and pulled out a bat from one of his inner coat pockets. The bat was a young one, and stirred only slightly when pulled out of his pocket. A single cracked eye lid to look around before it closed its eyes again.
Now this was a topic he could go more into. He could talk about this with ease. He knew he had told Rika a lot the other day. But he would still rather avoid the Dreamweaver knowing about the gangsters tailing him. Once they heard that bit they’d just want to know more and more. Then likely want to do something about it when inaction was the safest move.
“I do quite a bit with bats myself, but that’s a species affinity rather than purely a talent thing.” Granted his affinity for bats was probably a bit greater than your average vampire’s, given he had his own flock and did not always have to resort to commanding them by force to do something… Though to be perfectly honest it might be more accurate to say the flock had its own vampire. Heh…

What exactly the skull headed birds were was something that the Nightmare couldn’t answer. While they did indeed come from that strange other side, at the same time they seemed as if they didn’t belong there. They seemed like some sort of visitor grounded in a different reality that did not play by the shifting dreamscape's rules. They were quite odd. Perhaps an invading species. He wasn’t sure without digging further. An adventure for another day. Now then what about these talent things?
Rika would furrow his eyebrows in thought. “Ah, so you are referring to a skill or power. Well,” he would fold his arms as he thought a bit. “I do have some powers, but I am not sure if my abilities call things like animals to me. Though…it would make sense why I got along with them so well if it was power based.” Either that or he and animals just had an unspoken connection. Another mystery he would peck at later. Right now he was highly distracted by what the other was doing.
As he saw the bat, the Nightmare would smile naturally and easily. The cuteness of the animal and having it to focus on for a bit caused him to release a bit of the agitation from earlier. He’d watch the little bat amused before a question came to his mind.
“Hmm, I’ve met another that could talk them. Not sure if it was power or his species. Though can you talk to them too?” he would ask taking a step closer to get a better look at the bat itself. The bird on his head would fluff a bit at that, but stayed quiet as it watched. Well for the moment, the topic had his attention, but would that keep the Nightmare from coming back to the vague things? Well time and mood would tell.

Could be either, but any vampire could communicate with bats with ease. His hand curled slightly around the bat when the bird moved. A slight preparation in case it thought the bat would be a good snack. “Yes.” He said with a nod, starting to get a bit exicited. “I’d show you now, but I’d wake this little guy up if I started chittering in bat. Though its a pretty neat language. Part of it actually requires synesthesia, the ability to see sounds. Or rather, the ability to perceive one sense as another. But in this case, ya, its the ability to see sounds. Because their language is in part a projection of images."
If he he hadn't already started walking towards the bar he would do it now as he talked. This was likely the longest Rika had ever heard Ozaki talk without stumbling over his own tongue or refusing to give any more information.

The bird would fluff a bit more before taking note of the other’s action and let out a caw around the same time the Nightmare would chuckle slightly. “Don’t crush the poor thing,” he would tease before the smile became softer. “In any case, if you are concerned about my bird eating it, it won’t. It eats the dead not the living.” Was that comforting or disturbing? The Nightmare didn’t know or worry about it as he laid out a simple fact about this particular bird. They did strange things yes, but hardly hurt the living unless the living did something dumb to provoke them.
That aside, the Nightmare would find himself focusing on what the other was saying and doing, the emotions floating around shifting to something more lighter as this one seemed to get excited about the topic they were currently diving into.
“Let the little one sleep. Though may I hold it?” He would hold out his hand just to see if the other would let him. He just couldn’t help it really. He loved animals and baby ones were even more hard to resist than an adult. Well whether he got the bat or not, Rika would eventually find a question crossing his mind as the other described the language. “A projection of images to themselves alone? Is it a natural or something that can be learned?” the Nightmare would ask quite interested in the matter as he shifted from his spot to follow the other after a while. It seemed the Nightmare welcomed this change of chatter from the other.

“That’s not even a remote possibility.” Ozaki would reply gently in regards to Rika warning him not to crush the bat. His fingers were just curled around it it a bit was all. Far from crushing. “But good to hear that.” That it wouldn’t eat the bat that was. The vampire glanced up at the bird. Must be a carrion eater then.
Ozaki felt a slight bit of hesitance when Rika asked to hold the bat, but opted to trust the man. Even if they had weird states of mind and could be a bit pushy, he doubted that they’d actually harm the baby bat. “Sure. Just handle him carefully and don’t drop him.” Ozaki transferred the bat over carefully to RIka’s hand, manipulating their hand slightly to make sure that if the bat twitched during the transfer or while it slept it wouldn’t accidentally fall out. Only once he was sure Rika had it would Ozaki let go.
“Well. I suppose depending on your species you may be able to learn the physical sounds of the language. Your voice box would have to be physically capable of making sounds like-“ He would pause for a second to say something in bat. “This. Now I’m going to ramble because you can’t understand me. And to give you a better range of sound ideas for what’s needed. Umm… Lavender. Pickles.”
Ozaki returned back to normal speak before speaking again. “I suppose you could likely manipulate your vocal cords to make it possible.” Rika’s current form was a conscious choice, and could easily be manipulated to whatever his mind could think of. “Though without a proper diagram might take a few tries to get right. The Synthethesia part is less something that you can learn and more something you just… Have. Can’t really teach someone how to hear colors… That was just an example of course.”

The Nightmare would simply give the other an amused smile as the bird on his head tilted its head one way then another at the vampire who looked up at it. Then with a fluttering of feathers, it moved from the Nightmare’s head to his shoulder leaning forward slightly to look at the other better, showing it was not even remotely interested in bothering the bat.
Speaking of odd behaviors, have you ever seen a kid at the candy store or toy store? Have you ever seen how their face lights up like a firework on the 4th of July when they get their favorite toy or are allowed to roam such a paradise freely? Well that is pretty much what Rika’s face did when Ozaki actually let him hold the baby bat. Do not ask why such a simple thing made the Nightmare so happy it just did. Now that he thought on it, it was one of those rare things in life where he and the other him actually lined up completely about something. Strange. Anyway…
The Nightmare would allow the other to come close and do what he had to do to transfer the bat, not seeming to mind touch or closeness as he watched the transfer with a pleased smile. “I won’t drop the baby,” he said as the transfer was finish and he used his other hand to give it more support. He would look down at the baby and hum happily almost look like he would jump up and down, but thankfully had more restraint than that.
As he held the bat, his bird would shift in its spot and fly from his shoulder over to Ozaki. It would circle above him a bit before deciding to flutter down and land on his head, the bird’s weight extremely light as it settled on an even fluffier nest of hair than Rika’s. Yassss! thought the bird. This is awesome. Well whatever happened from that would happen, the Nightmare was unphased by the event seeing as quite normal as he looked from the bat to Ozaki as he continued to follow.
As he listened, he would find that the bat language itself caught his attention fully for some reason. His other side reacting strongly to it as he tilted his head trying to understand why it sounded so familiar even though he couldn’t understand it. What was that saying about the other side of him? Despite how strange it was, he would manage to hide the questions about himself deep within as he nodded at the part about sound.
“I’ve tried mimicking animals before, but can only mimic birds and cats perfectly so far. Never gave bats a try though. It might be difficult considering the pitches, but perhaps not impossible. I would have to experiment and see if such pitches can be replicated.” Yes he could change form to get the pitches down, but what was the fun of that? It took all the challenge away. As for seeing sound...
“I don’t think that would be difficult for me. To see color, I mean,” he would say. “I’ve been able to see pictures due to sound so I would think adding just seeing color and no shape would take a bit of conditioning, but probably could be done.” It was odd, but if he closed his eyes and just let his other senses take over, he could see the world clearly as if his eyes were open. Just based on sound. His other senses added slight flavor. Granted…the way sound was used by bats was a bit different. He wondered if he replicated bouncing sound off of things could he navigate something without bumping into anything. Hmm the test he wanted to try….

Rika’s reaction to holding the baby bat was almost cute. Such child-like glee at such a simple thing. He wouldn’t have anticipated the Dreamweaver capable of such a reaction. Granted their previous reactions had been rather… Strained. The last one ending up with him drugging himself to escape the blood rage inducing amounts of anger he was going through at the time. The fact of which Rika was easily able to see through. “I’m guessing you could communicate with them then maybe, but not sure you could understand them talking back.” So far as Ozaki was aware, most vampires didn’t really have full out discussions with bats though.
So Rika would be as proficient as most vampires who only used bats as minions cared to be. Ozaki personally found that when you built a personal connection with the creatures they were much more compliant and willing to go the extra mile. Potentially doing things you didn’t even ask for. Which could be both good and bad sometimes. Though Ozaki tended to only reward the good times with treats like kiwis or some other type of exotic fruit. By Dracula’s fangs he loved kiwi.
“Hear color.” Ozaki corrected in a mild tone when Rika accidentally said see color- the normal way of doing it. An easy slip of the tongue. “Somewhat sounds like you already have a form of echolocation going on. But that color thing was just an example really. So I guess it might be possible that you could understand them."
Ravens were attracted to them and they had echolocation in some form or another. Ozaki mentally cataloged these to note about the Dreamweaver’s talent or talents. They could also talk to cats. Interesting. Ozaki had the distant temptation to take his small notebook out of his trench coat pocket and take notes on the man. He could write down the observations on the Dreamweaver’s talents later.
It appeared as though the Dreamweaver was going to be appearing every so often now. Might as well get to know as much about him and his talents as he could. Or he could just ask. Like a normal person. But would that be too intrusive? Yes. Like keeping a journal entry on someone wasn’t equally as weird. Not that he’d normally do that. Okay he had some on Nyx and certain names she had said while in alternative states. Askel. Anything he could find on Chaoris. Oh yah. Then there was all his research on Mordred and the gang. And a few others. Yah…
He did tend to keep notes on people of interest.
It just helped him think was all to have it all in writing so he could look back on it later. “I could try and give you a hand in learning the language if its possible for you. Probably not the best teacher though.” He’d try his best though if Rika wanted to learn.

The Dreamweaver would hold the bat gently yet firmly enough not to drop it. If the other had any reaction to his behavior the Nightmare would’ve missed it for the time being, his attention much too focus on the little creature he had. He was calm and comfortable, a complete 360 from when they first met both the first time and this time around. Yet that was one of the odd things about the Dreamweaver -- his emotional moods. They flowed like waves and just like waves he didn’t do anything to hide or excuse sudden changes in said moods either. The flipping and flopping could make him a bit stressful deal with for some, but the Nightmare didn’t care. If someone had a problem with his behavior they should speak up. Plain and simple. Anyway…
He would look over at the vampire when he mentioned speaking with bats and understanding them. “No that takes a bit of time. Sometimes a lot of time. You have to learn the language and then the culture so to speak of the creature or thing you wish to speak with. You have to spend time and put in the effort to understand nature’s languages effectively, but it is a fun challenge.” He loved learning new things and nature always had something to teach or show.
“Hear color?” the Nightmare would hum in thought at that. “Perhaps hearing and seeing are both correct considering how the process works,” the Nightmare would say as he contemplated the process a bit. You had to hear a sound yes, but then the mind went through a series of processes to form a picture translating sound into mental sight. So did that make it both a hearing and seeing exercise in the end? Perhaps and then again perhaps not. The Nightmare wasn’t going deep into that one right now as he had more immediate things to keep him interested.
“More like I have learned to see without seeing. I would have to do some more experiments to see if I can use echolocation like a bat. Never tried bouncing sound off of things so I am not sure if that works for me or not yet. That aside, I believe anything is possible if you just try hard enough to get what you want.” Whether or not you could do it, creatures of the world at their intelligence level always found things to assist to accomplish a goal, no? So impossible or out of bound things were always reachable…at least for the Nightmare they were. He wasn’t too sure how many went the extra mile to satisfy their curiosities.
Speaking of curiosity, the Nightmare wouldn’t have cared too much if the other poked him for answers to certain things or even took notes. Sure they could go over things, but honestly what did that really tell anyone outside of general information about a thing? Maybe….or maybe not. It would depend on how honest the one answering was being. Though in the end words could only do so much. Wanted to learn something fully? You had to do more than ask about it that is for sure. Either way, the Nightmare would’ve probably found the matter amusing because he also took notes and did research himself so having someone similar to him in that field would’ve been nice indeed. Alas he wouldn’t find out the other's desires today unless the vampire decided to simply not care like he did and poke anyway.
Moving past that, the other gave the Nightmare a rather delicious offer in the end. Hearing the offer the Nightmare would consider it before nodding a bit as he looked down at the baby bat sleeping in his hands. “That would be appreciated.” For more than one reason. He probably was going to bump into the vampire here and there so why not use that time to get to know him and his ways better and maybe even bond with him through these activities. It would be nice after all these years. And would be nice not to want to murder the guy after a few minutes of interaction. Yes, yes. This could be a good thing in the end. He would have to simply wait and see.

Bird on his head. They were quite comfortable up there. Ozaki was only slightly worried that it might get too comfortable and make a mess… But birds did try to keep their nests clean. And it was maybe some measure of trained. So… He was probably fine. He was used to his head sometimes being used as a nest, particularly back in the bat cave when he had a book and was just hanging out.
“Culture’s important to understand… I don’t think a lot of vampires know a ton about bat culture.” It was a bit of a pain when his bats called him a good mother to another vampire and he had to try to explain what that meant. Sometimes his bats would try to be wingmen of sorts for him and… It didn’t go well normally. He himself knew plenty about the culture due to the fact one had basically adopted him about four months into his vampirism. “For example, a bat hears the word father and basically assumes the guy who erm… Contributed his genetics and vamoosed. Mother is the term for the one who provides, protects, and teaches the young. And they tend to look past the gender of a person if they are fulfilling that role and just call them mother, because the differences between a mother and father are so different for them that they can’t really wrap their minds around calling someone a father if they’re actually attending to their children.”
The same words could have vastly different meanings for different cultures and species.
Ozaki nodded in agreement that hearing and seeing were both correct in regards to this. Accurate. He’d listen to Rika seeing without sight with interest. “Well there can be physical limitations sometimes… But I suppose that just means you have to work harder. Which is what I guess you just said… Heh…” Anything is possible so long as you try hard enough. What an optimistic way of thinking about it.
Was that Ozaki’s problem? Had he just not tried hard enough? After a certain point he guessed sometimes he did give up. But not without first trying to find an alternative solution. One had led him to be able to do something not many vampires were capable of- feeding others- not just himself. Hence the being called a good mother thing.

The bird would not make mess in the normal fashion, the creature did not poop everywhere and only occasionally dropped feathers here and there. What it did do, however, was wiggle slightly deeper into that hair to make a nice little spot for itself. Content it would make a strange grunting sound as it went back to observing the world finding this completely normal to do despite being a wild bird without any proper training. It was more like it had a strange version of respect for others that it gave easily enough as long as the other party didn’t do anything foolish for the bird to take it back.
“I think if you want to understand something fully, you have to sink yourself into that thing. Kind of become one with it so to speak. Through that you gain much knowledge that helps with not only communication pieces, but also how things work in general. I like the whole package versus a piece of it. Though I wonder why a species connected with bats wouldn’t take the time to get to know their furry companions better,” the Nightmare would begin and then nod in regards to the bats' understanding of mother and father. “Mother and Father are odd words for me. On one hand, I understand where the bats come from on that front. A mother does typically care, protects, etc in the animal world while the father typically doesn’t. On another hand, I understand it from a human side too. Where both mothers and fathers can perform the same roles. At this point I am not too sure if the titles are really valid anymore considering depending on what you are dealing with it can be applied to either gender.” Was there a point in using such words outside of a label? Huh.
The Nightmare would blink a bit as he looked from the baby bat to Ozaki. “You said you are involved with the bats yes? Do they see you as mother or just family?” He would fall quiet after that for a bit giving the other time to process all of that before addressing the last thing said.
“Sometime we are born with things that make life challenging and sometimes events in life make those things for us. It is often easier to give up than keep up the fight whether it is a physical thing or mental thing whatever it is, but you know what?” The Nightmare would smile softly. “Even if we do fall over and over again and get tired from the fight, I find the most beautiful and priceless results comes from simply not giving up. Even if you end up failing in the end, you gave it your best and probably learned something without even realizing it. It just makes us stronger and that is one thing I love about the worlds around us.” You could try and succeed, but also fail and succeed too. The beautiful contradiction of the world that held such a simple and powerful truth. Was it optimistic to think such a way?
Well that was kind of hard to answer considering his mind was split between himself and another; however they agreed it was the best way to think about a matter even if approach was rather different.
