welcome to Eldritch Academy
In a world of myths and mysteries, the pinnacle of the magical academies exists. Eldritch Academy offers education to all ages and species but specializes in the study and training of one's innate mystical capabilities, often called Eldritch Energies, Powers, or Unknowns, but more formally known as their Talent. However, tensions run high with the nations only holding a fragile peace as the Talents that rival the epitomes of technology change the balance of power.
With the more recent uprising of evil Shades and introduction of combat-oriented programs into Talent-focused schools, nations grow more aggressive towards one another. The demand for resources grows, and skirmishes at the border of Arka and Mistere become more frequent. Monsters run into the nations from the Wildes, terrorizing villages and cities. The need for trained or in-training Hunters and Guardians has never been more urgent.

A long, hollow sigh left the youth’s lips. He stood among a sea of students, of potentials and hopefuls as they each scoured for their own names among those who had been accepted into this prestigious school of learning and Eldritch.
“Let’s just— get this over with.”
His voice came in an airy whisper to himself and another sigh left him. It was all he could do to keep from just turning around and leaving the premise. There was no way he’d been accepted. None. He’d known since the first test that he’d failed the entrance exams. It felt like a rock had sunk to the bottom of his stomach. He heard an exclamation of surprise and relief next to him as someone else found their name. A twang of frustration and regret shot through Vin. He knew that wouldn’t be him— couldn’t be him.
R...h...
Despite the futility of his search he attempted to find his name anyway. He wasn’t expecting to find anything, maybe he’d look for Nuria’s name next-- if he remembered how to spell it. Maybe she wouldn’t have been accepted either. Not like that was going to happen. She’d been mentored and read books back in her village. If either of them were going to be accepted, she would be the one. If it hadn’t been for his father recommending the school, he wouldn’t even be here. He’d been just happy spending time with Nuria, exploring different places, occasionally taking on an odd extermination job or trading what they had for coin. It was a hard life, it was full of uncertainty— but it had felt more certain than this. What would he do if she was accepted and he wasn’t?
R...h...
The entrance exam had been separated into three parts. The written exam, practical application, and an interview. The written exam had been the longest hour of his life. He’d been supplied the test and a pencil, but by the end of the ordeal, he had been drained. His hopes and chances seemed as empty as the test he’d handed back. In the second part, his practical application had gone smoother. He’d demonstrated what knowledge he’d had in survival, in identifying many herbs and beasts by name and basic properties. He’d demonstrated his knowledge of the land from the Frostpine Forests to the Pinnacle Rock in Galathir’s Blade, the very roads they had traveled and the stories he’d been told as a boy.
God, what comes after the 'h', again?

The star to my wandering bark The commotion in the hall was almost too much to handle, she'd never been around this many people before. For a split second she thought about begging Vin to leave and disappear back in to the woods. But she had made it this far and the tests were over with. Really, the hard part was behind her now. Unlike her companion, Nuria breezed through the written exams, but fell short when the practical exam was presented to her. Part of her was a bit worried as they approached the list posted on the wall. Potential students pushed their way toward the front to search for their name. Everyone once in a while Nuria would hear a squeal of excitement or witnessed the slumped shoulders that could only mean one thing. She stayed behind Vin as he moved closer and closer to the list. Someone behind her pushed her in an attempt to get closer to the listing. She pressed herself against Vin, her hand resting on his left shoulder as she looked over it and finally started to look for a familiar name. "Reznick... Rheinhardt...," her voice whispered as her eyes moved down the list. Then a gasp escaped her throat, "There! Rhodes!" The hand that had rested on his shoulder clasped down with a grip and she started to shake him. "That's you!" In her moment of excitement, she had completely forgotten that she was suppose to keep going to find her own name.

In his life, he'd never seen so many people congregated in a single spot. The sheer numbers and the droning sea of noise were enough to muddle his senses. His emerald eyes shifted to the gentle hand that rested on his shoulder, a body pressed up against him as to not get lost or separated in the ever-shifting wave of people. If they did get separated he wasn't sure how he was going to be able to find her. Nuria's face told him everything he was feeling. Anxiety, uncomfortable. It was a far cry from their lives up to now. Still, there was something exciting about all this, the newness of it all. On top of that, it wasn't like they weren't going to be together. There was a certain feeling of security when she was around.
Another voice rose up, a familiar one that came right near his ear. He looked at the list, where a small, slender hand was pointing. Was-- that his name? He couldn't read it, the letters looked familiar and yet so foreign. Nuria had done her best to teach him at least the basics of their alphabet on their journey here, a skill that he'd never needed before living in the wilds of Mistere. Simple math, geography, herbology and the like were all important-- but he'd hardly ever held a book let alone had the time to read one. With learning the written language it was just so confusing. Some letters looked like others and there were so many of them! And then some pages were filled with them, his eyes didn't even know where to focus. But there it was, posted in large letters for all to see. Rhodes, Devin. There was another word next to it that he was unfamiliar with.V-e-r-m-- it was far too long for him to think of all the letters. He couldn't even venture to guess the meaning of what it could signify.
He looked back to Nuria, a giant smile plastered on both their faces. Relief washed over him. Wait-- but what about Nuria? He'd only assumed that she'd been accepted as well, he wouldn't believe that if he'd been accepted that she wouldn't.
"Wait, what about you? Where's your name?" He looked back at the list, his eyes bolting around though he didn't know what he was looking for. All the noise was making it so hard for him to concentrate. He gave her hand a brief, tight squeeze.

The star to my wandering bark The way Vin's face lit up when she pointed out his name was enough to to bring a bright smile to her lips. He had brought so much light to her world, since the first time she met him at eight years old. His bright, green eyes were the most familiar thing in the world to her now, after one year of traveling the world together. In another life time, Nuria would have realized what it meant. However, she'd grown up away from kids her age, she had no idea what an adolescent relationship was like. All she knew was that she would get a stomach ache if he was not around for an hour. She couldn't begin to imagine what it would had been like if he wasn't around to lead her through all the uncertainty that had been the last year of her life. "Me?" Nuria finally managed to pull her attention away from his eyes and faced the paper again. For a second, in all the excitement, she almost forgot what her name was. Her finger once again touched where Vin's was and moved down. By the time she found it, she had enough sense to know how to spell it. "Oh, thank the Lord." Not that she had ever doubted or anything... Except... the smile did not return to her face. Instead, eyes were fixated on the words next to her name. Sage. Nuria thought it was a mistake so she looked at Vin's once more. Vermilion. It was as if the wind was knocked straight out of her and all she could do was squeeze his hand back. Her blue eyes looked up at Vin's face. He had no idea, did he? Or did it actually matter to him? It sure as hell matter to her, she was not ready to let go. He was the first thing she saw every morning and the last thing every night. "Do you think our dorms are far way from each other?" Her voice was soft as she decided to break it to him gently.

Devin took his time studying the letters in Nuria’s name. They meant nothing to him, yet at this moment they were the most important symbols in the world. They would be attending Eldritch together! He’d hardly believed that he’d be accepted, hell, he’d had half a mind to not try in the first place. Now that he was here, now that he’d overcome this obstacle he felt like a great weight had been lifted from his soul!
“Do you think our dorms are far away from each other?”
The question seemed random to Devin. What should it matter how far away dorms are from one another?
“Dunno. What do you mean?”
The realization of the meaning of her words set in as he asked the question. His stomach sunk as he understood what she was saying. They were together attending the school, but they would be kept apart? He was so used to her being there.
“Seems they’re letting all the trash into this school now.” A voice carried above the others, distinct and snarky. “Not only demi-humans and uncontrolled monsters, but uneducated lowlife scum. If they keep on this path they’re likely to lose their esteemed reputation. Just what is the world coming to?”
Devin turned to face the direction the voice was coming from. It was a black haired boy with dark eyes. The sneer on his face rubbed Devin the wrong way, his anger flared.
“Oh? Have I struck a nerve? Lowest scoring examinee, zero points! Couldn’t even write his name on the test! What kind of buffoon can’t write his own name?!” The boy laughed.
Shame rushed through Devin, his face red. What was worse, he knew what this boy was saying was true. There were other examinees who could have taken his place, should have taken his place. After having taken the entrance exams, he knew he was perhaps the least qualified individual to be here.
