A school year passes, another one begins. What once was old is reborn into something new and better. At least, Astrid would hope this year would be better than the last. A new life and new experiences were hard on anyone, especially on someone so young. Going to a big fancy school when you were so used to normal public school in some of the small cities was very unnerving. Despite this, the young silvernette had done as best as she could to try and fit in despite her circumstances. And in retrospect? She did. Granted, with her common grades and small select friends not a lot of people in this academy would call it a success. Her anger issues and werewolf tendencies, the main issues, were still very much active despite some of the intensive care she had received upon entering. But Astrid herself? Was never focused on fixing those. Rather she found more joy in doing her best in school and making friends, both of which she had accomplished... Kind of... Some of her friends she had made were either the teachers themselves or some of the stranger kids, but they were friends nonetheless. Which is why she wanted to impress them. Impress them how? Well, get a head start on her studies, of course.
It was currently early morning in Mistere, the clear orangery pink sky looming sleepily over the academy as if the world itself was yet to wake. The sun itself was like a egg yolk, freshly cracked into the sky and unable to keep itself up from behind the hills in the distance. The lightly feathered, dark gray shadows of the buildings and plants were small despite the sun hanging so low, like the cold and bitter autumn air had frozen them in place. A soft mist mingled in the grass, shining off of the small dew droplets that spread through many of the plants in the courtyard.
It was a beautiful morning, one that many people would miss if they were not a morning bird. Astrid was no bird, but she was a morning person. The young girl, using this time to her advantage, took to studying in the gardens despite the cold weather settling in over the past couple of weeks. Some might ask why she didn't use the library instead... But, well, apparently the library was haunted or something, so there was no way she was going to use that. Ghosts were scary. And really, the werewolf did not mind the cold all too much, not when the beautiful garden was around her. No one ever really got to see the garden like this, undisturbed and unused, as most people were in it all day once school started. So it was rather nice to simply sit among nature and read.
Sitting under one of the bushy trees Astrid curled up underneath it, surrounded by a few textbooks and various school supplies. She didn't need a coat as her body temperature was higher than most's. Some people might think she was crazy, sitting in the shade while in was barely above freezing level, but if she did put one on she would end up taking it off anyway once it got too hot. There was no point, really. Her normal school uniform the organization gave her was enough.
Crimson eyes flickered from sentence to sentence as she read a book that was probably a little bit too big for her, but somehow managed to keep open and pay attention despite this. The English teacher had given her some fancy books since she could surprisingly read above her grade level despite not being able to read properly. She was reading high school level books despite being in middle school. It made Astrid happy that she could impress someone like that, but in actuality she just really liked to read. Stories of love, friendship, drama, action. All with a happy ending. It was the kind of story she wished to live herself. To grow up and be known around the globe, to help others that are in need of it, to make whoever her parents are proud. A bit of a dream of course. It would take ages for any of that to come true, and she doubted her name would ever really spread across the world. The world wasn't magic like that. But still, she could try. And she could try by doing her best.
During the middle of one of the paragraphs a little chirp near her caught the girl's attention and distracted her from her reading. Red eyes blinked, turning the book over slightly to see a squirrel searching for more nuts. Probably for the winter, judging by the few he already had gathered in his mouth from the way it was bulging slightly. The squirrel's black eyes looked around until it saw a chestnut right beside Astrid. It began to walk forward, but hesitated once it got a little closer to Astrid. Astrid turned her attention to the chestnut, reaching over for it and then leaning forward towards the squirrel. The squirrel backed up a little, but the girl slowed down her action and presented the chestnut to the animal with an open palm.
"You can have it." The silvernette said, a little wobbly due to her speech impediment, but still soft enough so the squirrel wouldn't be scared. "I won't bite. Come on." Animals were easier for the girl to speak to. They didn't demand you to speak correctly or clearly, not like everyone else here. So she rather enjoyed it, even if they couldn't understand her. Though, Astrid liked to think they did.
The squirrel's nose twitched, still hesitating before it reached out with its grubby little paws and took the chestnut in a flash. Shoving it into its mouth the squirrel hopped away back further into the garden. Astrid watched it leave and crawl up into a tree just a little away from her.
Summer went by so fast, and even autumn didn't have much time left. The earth was dying, but once spring came back around it was going to be reborn into something new.
