welcome to Eldritch Academy
In a world of myths and mysteries, the pinnacle of the magical academies exists. Eldritch Academy offers education to all ages and species but specializes in the study and training of one's innate mystical capabilities, often called Eldritch Energies, Powers, or Unknowns, but more formally known as their Talent. However, tensions run high with the nations only holding a fragile peace as the Talents that rival the epitomes of technology change the balance of power.
With the more recent uprising of evil Shades and introduction of combat-oriented programs into Talent-focused schools, nations grow more aggressive towards one another. The demand for resources grows, and skirmishes at the border of Arka and Mistere become more frequent. Monsters run into the nations from the Wildes, terrorizing villages and cities. The need for trained or in-training Hunters and Guardians has never been more urgent.

Armed with a few notebooks and plenty of pencils in a backpack, Kaname entered the academy library after class. She was also carrying her sword, but she used her Conceal ability to hide it from sight. She did not need "inciting panic" to be yet another thing held against her. She calmly waked into the library and began searching for books on weapons. Maybe her sword was among them.
Kaname searched through the History section and came across five heavy tomes on weapons of the war. One of them had to have a clue about the sword. The salesman who sold her father the sword claimed that it was used in a great war a long time ago. She hoped that it was not a lie made up just to dump a mass-produced stage weapon on an unsuspecting buyer. Part of her hoped that she had not lost her life to a cheap stage prop.
Struggling under the weight of the books, Kaname eventually found a private study room and took it over. She opened the door and carried the books to the table inside, being careful not to make too much noise despite her arms feeling like they were about to break from the weight of the books. Once the books were safely on the table she closed the room door and ended the Conceal ability cast on her sword. The weapon inside its green scabbard was now in her hands.
Kaname placed it on the table and opened the first book of a five-volume series titled Weapons of the Great War. She sat in the chair and started reading. One of the five books had to have at least one solid lead on the identity of her sword.

He woke up in a calm mood neither happy nor sad today and went about his usual routine of getting ready for the day. He didn't have any classes lined up for the day so he decided it was time to do some research of his own on a personal issue that he had. Armed with only a notebook and some pens, the kitsune would head down to the library to perform his search. He started his search by browsing through the various books that were on display, spending a good chunk of time hunting for anything on beasts and curses. He would pick out a few that looked promising before heading towards one of the private study rooms and opening the door.
When he peeked in he would find it already occupied by a girl who seemed to have a mountain of tomes already with her and was reading. While it was true he didn't exactly want to invade another's study room, it was also true he was in no mood to try and find another room. So there was only one thing left to do wasn't there. Shifting the weight of books in his arm, the kitsune would speak up keeping his voice low enough for the girl to hear. "Excuse me, but may I share this room with you?" he would ask as he glanced around the room taking note of the weapon, but not reacting much to it before his eyes were settling on the girl again. It was strange, but as long as the girl didn't decide to use the weapon on him things would be fine.

Kaname immediately began to question the timing of the newcomer's arrival. It was too convenient to ignore. A guy showed up right after she entered the room and unsheathed her weapon. She wondered if he was a spy sent by the faculty to observe what she was doing. She would not put it past them... since she was not one of their favorites and did not show much fear of them, they wanted to keep an eye on her and keep her from getting more powerful than they could control.
Kaname shook off that paranoid thinking. Maybe he really was a spy, but that was no reason to go hurling accusations without solid proof. She decided to relent and share the room.
"OK. You can share the room with me." Kaname said to him calmly. It helped that the sword was nearby. With it around, Kaname was amiable.

Have you ever stepped into a room and felt like you had triggered some alarm system? Well that is the way Rika felt after he had opened the door and asked his question. He wasn't sure why, but the girl seemed to be giving him an odd look that made him feel like he was in some sort of trouble or had trespassed on some sacred ground. Maybe he shouldn't have asked her anything and just shuffled off to another room. Maybe being lazy actually was about to get him skewered by some kid he knew nothing about. Now wouldn't that be a way to go?
Internally, the kitsune would shake his head, but on the outside remain calm enough as he waited for an answer. When he finally got one he quietly let out the held breath he had unconsciously been holding as he entered the room further. "Thank you," was all he said before looking around the room a bit. Instead of sitting at the table with the girl, he would find a corner and choose the floor instead. He would make himself comfortable against the opposite wall to the girl. He'd settle his books to the floor before picking up the top one and flipping it open to begin his search on curses.

Kaname was starting to feel indignant. What was it with people and weapons? Did the guy really think that she was going to attack him with a deadly weapon for kicks and giggles? She had to take a deep breath. He was a special kind of stupid if he thought that she was going to attack him for the fun of it.
It was time to address the elephant in the room.
"Don't worry, mister. I won't attack you with the sword. I won't risk suspension and arrest to attack someone I don't even know for no good reason." Kaname assured him. She was a little more blunt than she intended to be, but there was no point in tiptoeing around anymore. He could take her words any way he wanted.
With that statement being said, she then opened the first book and began reading it. It seemed to be focused on siege weaponry like catapults and cannon, but she would keep going. She really did not want to haul the heavy book back before completely reading it.

"That wasn't exactly why I was standing in the door like that. You were giving me a look that suggested I might've trespassed somehow is all. Your weapon doesn't really bother me and you attacking me was far from my mind," the kitsune would respond back with a slightly smile. Despite how blunt the girl was, he was soft spoken and calm all the while as he made himself quite comfortable on the floor with the books. Falling silent, he would look at a passage about a cursed head, but inwardly sighed when he found that is not what he was searching for when he decided to look up curses. Flipping the page, he'd scan the book for a little while longer before speaking. "My name is Rika by the way. Are you perhaps doing research on your weapon?" he would ask eyeing the various books the girl had for a moment.

The older guy was nothing but polite to her and she had acted so rude to him. Now Kaname felt like a grade- A jackass. An apology was in order.
"I'm sorry about what I said, Rika. You didn't deserve it. I've been stressed out lately. Everyone acts like I'm gonna snap and kill them at any moment. I've never drawn the weapon from its scabbard and people still wig out." Kaname explained to him. She hoped that he would accept the apology. The sword was starting to affect her in more ways than one. Not only had it made her paranoid, but it had also made her rude.
Kaname gently closed the book. It was informative, but it was about siege weapons, not personal weapons. Kaname needed information on swords used during the war. "Yeah. I'm researching the sword you see right there. I think there's more to it than there is at first glance." Kaname said to Rika.

The horned man would continue to read the book on curses flipping through the book a bit trying to find anything that matched his issue, but in the end simply could not. With a light sigh he would close the book before looking over at the girl when she spoke. To her words, he would give a gentle smile and shake his head.
“It’s fine. I can understand why the stare might’ve given the impression I was afraid; however, I am one of the few that don’t wig out before a weapon. In fact, I find them a bit fascinating to say the least,” he would begin and then tilting his head he would ask. “Why haven’t you taken it out of scabbard?” That was curious. Unless something prevented such a thing from happening, he would’ve wanted to see the blade with his own eyes, test it out and see how it worked, but then maybe that was just him. He was curious like that.
Speaking of curious, his curiosity would only grow as the girl confirmed that she was researching sword. “Oh do you now, Ms…ummm…?” he would trail off a bit not knowing the girl’s name, but giving her plenty room to answer that question if she wanted to.

"I haven't drawn it because that'd likely be the end of my time here." Kaname said to the older student. "I feel like I'm already skating on thin ice just by having it on campus. If I drew it for any reason other than for a combat class, I'd be finished here. Someone would trump up a reason to get me thrown out." Kaname added. On a campus full of students with supernatural powers, it was grimly amusing that the most feared student was a girl with a sword. Her Talent was not even all that strong. What her Talent did have was versatility. She was also familiar with its basic properties, so that meant she did not have to flounder around figuring out how to use it.
"Yeah. I think there's something else to my sword. It's like it doesn't want me to let it go." Kaname informed him. He did not need to know much more than that right now. She was already skating on thin ice with him due to her crabby comment from earlier. The hybrid did not want to fall through the hole.
"My name's Kaname Hayamoto." Kaname gave her name to the older student. The first volume had no relevant information, so she set it aside and picked up the second volume.

He would listen to her response and give a light nod. "It is strange that would be the cause for being kicked out considering where we are. That weapon must be powerful then," he would say as he shifted in his spot on the floor and picked up another book. "It doesn't want you to let it go? So does it have a mind of its own?" he would ask as he narrowed his eyes at the title of the book wondering for a moment if this one would be helpful or not. This book was on possessions. Would a possession really be what he had? Well he guess there was only one way to find out, wasn't there?
He'd move the book before him pausing as he rested his hand on the book as he heard the name given. "A pleasure to meet you, Kaname," he would respond back in his usual gentle tones, not seeming at all offended by the earlier outburst as he settled quite well in the room with the younger girl.

"I don't think it's so much the sword is powerful as the fact I have one on me. At least that's what I'm thinking." Kaname said to Rika. He turned out to be a nice and helpful sort of guy. She took her eyes off him for a moment and flipped through the second tome. It was on personal ranged weapons like longbows, crossbows, and early firearms. It was sort of on the right track, but she needed to learn about personal close-combat weapons like swords.
"It feels like it's got a hold on me. Whenever I leave it in my room, I feel irritable. I found out that if I do physical exercise I have an easier time of keeping its influence at bay. That goes double if it's a combat-related class... as long as I'm training or sparring I feel fine. When I don't have the sword it can be a struggle to get through a day." Kaname explained to Rika. What she said probably would not help her case had she said it in front of faculty. Her testimony would only bury her deeper with them. Thankfully Rika was not a spy for them. Maybe he could help her find out more about the sword she carried before something drastic happened.

“I guess any weapon would cause a few heads to spin with concern,” the creature would say with a light nod as he flipped a page in the book and paused on a page about a beast possession. He would become quiet as he read the passage, but found it of no use when he found it wasn’t about the sort of creature he was looking for. No his seemed to be far more complicated than a simple possession. Well that wasn’t helpful at all. He needed to know more about how to get rid of a creature placed within him or taming it, not how the possessed creature controlled things. He knew about that already from first hand experience. Shaking his head a bit, he would flip the page again pausing to listen to the girl.
“A feeling that something got a hold on you. I can relate to that well enough; however for me it seems that nothing calms that feeling when it rises. It can be a bit annoying to be honest,” the kitsune would say as he looked off to the side, the tip of his tail wiggling a bit in the air as he thought about his own issue for a bit. “I wonder if your sword isn’t a living thing trying to consume you in some fashion,” he would say taking more interest in the matter. “Where did you get such a weapon to begin with?”

"I've been lucky so far. The feelings go away when I'm doing physical activity or studying something. That's working so far, but I'm worried about what will happen when those methods don't work anymore." Kaname said to Rika. She took a moment to thumb through the volume sitting in front of her. Still more longbows, crossbows, and early firearms. Nothing about swords. She put an improvised paper bookmark and turned back to Rika.
"I don't know for sure if it's living or not, but that's a very good question, Rika. That's why I'm trying to find out something about it. I don't want to take the matter to faculty yet because my sword might "conveniently" disappear if they get it. They're a last resort option. I want to try and solve the matter myself first." Kaname explained. When he brought up the issue of how she came to possess the weapon, she told him part of the story. "A salesman in Mystopolis sold it to my father. The man said that it was used in a great war a few hundred years ago. My father bought it because he's an amateur historian in addition to his day job as an economics professor. Great war artifacts can also resell for a lot of money, so it's something of an investment too." Kaname told Rika the story of how the sword came to belong to her. Well, part of the story anyway.

“That does seem like a good stroke of luck and if it ever does stop working, I hope you can find knew ways to keep whatever that sword is doing to you at bay,” the kitsune would say as he glanced down at the book for a bit and then seeing that this book was getting him no where, he’d quietly close it and set aside as he instead focused fully on the girl with him.
“I can see not wanting to take it to the staff. That could be a tricky thing indeed.” He wondered how many would actually be willing to help the girl versus taking it away though. A sword like that and its effect on the girl would cause some interest to someone would it not? It had caused him some curiosity after all. That aside, he would nodded at the research bit. “That is a good start, but something like that can be daunting alone. Want some help on it?” he would ask as he tilted his head at her. Two heads working on the problem would be better than one right? Perhaps a second pair of eyes could gain insight the one so close on it couldn’t, no? Well the offer was there if the girl wanted to take it or not.
Whether she did or not, that did not stop the creature from continuing to listen to her as she gave some background to the sword. “Huh. I would think that something like this was passed down through the family. Even more so because it has some form of hold on you. How strange. It makes me even more curious about its nature.”

"I hope so too, Rika. So far it's working. I'll have to see what else keeps the feelings at bay, preferably before an incident happens." Kaname expressed her hope that her current methods of denying the sword's power over her would work.
"Yeah, I'm not sure if taking it to staff is the right idea. Mr. Felis seems to be a straight arrow, but who's to say the sword won't try to take one of them over? I think a staff member with the sword would be a lot more dangerous than I am." Kaname opined. Kaname was a twiggy hybrid who had never been in a fight. Beatrix and Morgan were experienced combatants. It did not take a psychic to predict what would happen should one of those two be taken over and go on a rampage with the weapon in hand.
"I'm not sure how much time I have before the , so I'll need your help, Rika. That is, if you want to give it. I'm not gonna make you help." Kaname said to Rika. She could not blame him if he walked away now. The sword did not even need to leave its scabbard to be dangerous. What if the sword decided to give up on her and tried to tempt someone else instead? That was something she hoped never happened.
"I know my father did some research of his own into the weapon. He never told me what he found out, though. He kept the findings under lock and key in his desk. He kept his study locked when he wasn't in there." Kaname told him. That brought up another question. Why was she allowed to keep the sword if it was so dangerous?
