welcome to Eldritch Academy
In a world of myths and mysteries, the pinnacle of the magical academies exists. Eldritch Academy offers education to all ages and species but specializes in the study and training of one's innate mystical capabilities, often called Eldritch Energies, Powers, or Unknowns, but more formally known as their Talent. However, tensions run high with the nations only holding a fragile peace as the Talents that rival the epitomes of technology change the balance of power.
With the more recent uprising of evil Shades and introduction of combat-oriented programs into Talent-focused schools, nations grow more aggressive towards one another. The demand for resources grows, and skirmishes at the border of Arka and Mistere become more frequent. Monsters run into the nations from the Wildes, terrorizing villages and cities. The need for trained or in-training Hunters and Guardians has never been more urgent.

It was so easy to get caught up. Caught up in coffeeshop drama, in meeting people, in following a lead and dashing around the library for hours. But at night, when the library was empty and the aether had calmed, Esialeth could finally relax. The empty table was piled high with books she would not read; rather, she was absorbed in a book that she herself owned. She was absorbed in a world of assassins playing templars, of rifts and abyss and freezing nights.
It had been hours since she last spoke. The moonlight streamed through the clear, vaulted windows, and Esialeth let the aether swirl around her. Jasmine. Jasmine and spring frost. She let her senses extend, absorbing her surroundings, and—
A bump, an extra string. A cut to an inverted pattern.
There was someone else here.
She felt her mouth form syllables, syllables that felt foreign after hours of disuse. "Is anyone there?"

Oof. He'd been noticed.
After the day's activities of running the halls with all the noise, Eliot looked for refuge. Normally at this time of night he was off doing...other things, but the students had been especially messy and loud, so he was backlogged. He didn't mind the menial work. He adored moving around unnoticed and if anyone did notice him, he was promptly forgotten about as soon as their eyes shifted away. He could be everywhere and nowhere. Knowing things was a luxury he yearned for, and such a bland job let him listen in where ever. However, today had been useless and he'd spent every second of his time cleaning spills and less pleasant fluids from various places around the school, as well as mixing chemicals to scrub graffiti off the walls of the gymnasium. And Eliot only dared do all that when it was quiet enough for him to leave the sound proofed safety of his cleaner's closet.
The last on the list of tasks was best saved for last, to wind him down. The library was the only other haven he frequented when the scent of chemicals in his closet started to get to him. Now he was stooped under the study desks in the back where the hoodlums sat. A rainbow assortment of gum formed a mosaic masterpiece on the underside, while the top side sported carvings that harkened back to the beginnings of the human race when their primary belief system revolved around genitalia for whatever reason. Using a sharp window scraper, he'd been dismantling the sticky A.B.C. gum when he heard a female voice reach out into the relative silence.
Instead of answering, Eliot simply stopped what he was doing and walked his beige-jumpsuited self to where she sat. He was careful to emerge from the book isles slowly so she wouldn't be startled. Seeming tired but pleasant, he waved a black gloved hand at her. "Just the janitor, ma'am," he answered in a low, quiet voice. "Didn't mean to disturb you."

Her voice mirrored his, yet despite its softness, it still managed to echo off the moonlit floors. "That's quite all right. I'm quite sure the library is closed now, anyway." Esialeth smiled, seemingly not noticing or caring about the eccentricity of her presence at such an hour. She eyed the man's hand. It wass quite hard to tell, but whatever he was holding was giving off mixed, not exactly pleasant, aetheric energies. She probed further, searching for danger, but found only...chewing gum?
Esialeth felt her lips purse in distaste. Such mundane, banal objects, yet a single touch ruined her day far more effectively than a single person could...and there was only one person who cleaned them? She knew the school's budget. This was just ridiculous. She uncrossed her legs, stretching them beneath her long skirts, and looked around.
"Far be it from me to question your hard work, but do you want any help with that? The library is quite large, and I have yet to sense another person here aside from the two of us."

He ducked his head at her offer, his free hand bashfully adjusting the position of his low tied hair. While he wasn't a small dude. His muscles tested the strength of his buttons at certain movements, but despite that he still almost shrunk in on himself at her words. He wasn't always so meek, but the persona took over especially while on school grounds. The janitor generally moved unseen, so to not only be noticed but also spoken to and not shrugged off was a departure from his routines. "It's not a job I would ask anyone's assistance for..." he answered, a small crooked smile peeking its way out. "It's..ah...gross," continued the man, jamming the sticky tool into his pocket to rid her sight of it. There was a bit of muted humor in his face, though his eyes were tired. The dull blue hues he possessed had the aura of seeing a great many things, much horrific but also much victorious.
There was no way he would consider a person that smelled as clean as her to scrape disgusting gum. His heightened senses hadn't missed her peculiar scent of jasmine and frost, the latter he knew very well from days with his mother. Perhaps it was archaic of him to not want the woman to sully her hands with such things, but he was a pretty old guy despite his looks. Well, old in terms of how long he'd existed on the planet. As a half ghoul, half dragon, he just sorta....existed. It was as if he was in an odd stasis. "I was simply stalling going to my apartment. The neighbors above are having a party tonight, so scraping gum in the sanctuary of the library was more appealing. I have all week to finish it, so I can finish another time, miss...." he trailed, realizing his rudeness. They hadn't been introduced. "I'm sorry. I didn't ask your name. I'm Eliot, the school janitor...er..obviously..." Smooth. How long had it been since he'd talked to another breathing person?

Esialeth laughed gently, the sound tinkling like tiny bells. Eliot's awkwardness was quite endearing—or was the night fraying her mind? It was hard to tell. "That would be Miss Rose, although most people call me Esialeth. Whichever you prefer."
She unhurriedly gestured to her own table. "I do loathe to get my hands dirty, but I'm certainly no stranger to it. At any rate, might I suggest—?" She found the bridge between the mahagony table and a particularly diffucult piece of gum and willed the elements to separate. The gum dislodged itself with a pleasant pop, and Esialeth brought it to float above her hand. "—this." She smiled, then furrowed her brow.
"You know, I think I can actually tell whose this is." She paused, the silence exemplifying her distaste. "Thanks, Seth," she said finally, with an air of resignation. She looks back to Eliot. "If you're bored, there are some chess tables. No one really uses them, so they should be...clean. We could play a game or two."
Internally, she winced. It had been years since she had played, and maybe this guy didn't even like chess. At that moment, she chose to blame everything on the veil of the night, rather than her hermit-like habits and peculiar lack of friends.

Esialeth Rose. A lovely name, though not one he'd heard before, which was saying something given how many he'd heard. He wasn't sure which variation he was most comfortable with, given he was a little uncomfortable as it was.
Esialeth's demonstration of her talent earned her two slightly lifted brows. "Hm. Impressive. Yeah, that is the better way to do it," he commented quietly, the typical rumble of his low tone the only thing bringing his words out of whisper territory. He rubbed his stubbly chin as he observed, marveling at her a bit. His talent functioned quite differently, and while he had fine control of it, he anticipated many broken desks. It wasn't the most delicate of abilities, far more suited for damage and general warfare shenanigans than aiding in any janitorial duties. Besides, he never used his talent unless it was during his more nocturnal activities, lest his identity be revealed. Eliot was even more amazed that she could tell whose gum it was. If he'd been a teacher, perhaps he'd have done something with such information, but alas he wasn't. Thus, he didn't care. Besides, if students stopped messing up the school, he'd be out of a job.
Her next offer was a bit odd, but not unwelcome. He wasn't really bored, but he was willing to oblige her. "Ah...sure. I don't know if I remember how to play," he again ducked his head, turning to move closer to the indicated tables. They were indeed clean. He'd polished them a week ago, and it looked like no one had touched them. "If you're expecting a challenge, I don't think you'll find one in me. Heh," Eliot laughed nervously, seating himself and staring at the chess pieces. How did they move again? He was probably about to make a fool of himself.

...Right. A bad choice, then. Esialeth resisted the urge to smack her forehead and instead offered a compromise, the words sounding laughable even before they left her mouth. "It may interest you to know that I have no intention of playing by the rules." She gestured to the weaker pieces. "Why, any day now, the working class, the pawns and knights, could overthrow the tyrannical government!" She changed her voice. "'Feel free to kill the puppet ruler that was the one remaining vestige of our tyranny, you cringing servant of the crown. Vive la revolution!'"
The night was beautiful as always; the moon shone outside, and the broad-leaf trees whispered in the wind. The stars twinkled cheerfully. The soil was bound to be resting from the sun's incessant heat, and Esialeth wondered briefly how it would feel to spend her time among the creatures of the night. To bury herself in the warm soil and return in a fortnight, when the moon was absent and the sky was dark.
The urge to jump out the window was almost unbearable.
The desire shone; her blood sang with it. Had I the foresight to improve my social graces, I would not be in this situation, thought she; unfortunately, Esialeth's pride, held lover-close as always, prevented her from rescinding her offer. She had made her bed; now she must lie in it. Feeling rather like the victim of an arranged marriage, Esialeth sat down at the pristine (never used) chess table, filling the time by making miniscule, unneeded adjustements to the board. Her disposition displayed none of her persistent mortification, however, and she gave Eliot a pleasant smile.
"Shall we get started?"

His normally stoic eyes widened a little, surprised but also equally amused. For no other reason than the insanity of no rules, Eliot arranged his pieces into something of a V formation. Pawns were at the front, of course, but he placed any outed pawn in the same spaces as the King and Queen. Knights and "Here are the royal meat shields.." he muttered, seeming to concoct a narrative in his brain like she had. If she was playing revolutionaries, then he'd have no choice but be the monarchy. Which side was right? Who knew anymore. "You won't destroy my kingdom with paltry rebellion," Eliot countered more boldly, setting out his rooks like castle gates with a knight and bishop on each side. He had no idea how this wold work, but it would at least be interesting.
Reaching into his pocket, he deftly produced, unwrapped, and popped a dark chocolate square into his mouth. It seemed to be an action he barely realized he did, as he tended to snack on chocolate all day. Any other creature would have a hard time existing in any healthy way on chocolate, coffee, and liquor almost exclusively, but his species dictated his diet. Snacking on the silky cocoa treat was much better than hunting an consuming flesh, though the craving did rear its head on hard days. Realizing himself, he blinked and pulled out another candy to offer her, so not to be rude. Other than his gesture, the only other words he spoke were about the game. "Feel free to go first, Miss Rose."

[googlefont=Meddon] Esialeth Rose A t his offer of chocolate, Esialeth dropped her golden gaze for just a moment to conjure demureness; it was hardly a tactic she was fond of, but she could think of no other way to prevent him from seeing through her carefully crafted web of aether-strings, the only thing preventing her from endlessly stale breath. "I find it a touch late for food, I think," she said, smiling vacantly. "Perhaps another time." She turned her attention to the board. Although Eliot's remarks about the nature of her rebellion were tasteless, Esialeth chalked it up to the nature of the game. She decided to counter his boldness with strategy of her own. "Interestingly, the progressive tax system has lead to an increased opportunity for job diversity. There are more people manning the towers, and more people can afford to be trained as knights," she said, gaining confidence. As if on cue, several pawns transformed into rooks and knights. Esialeth gasped in delight. She had anticipated some tricky work with aether-illusions, but it seemed like the peculiar chess table had some magic of its own.She positioned the remaining pawns so that they stood protecting each other. "Your move."Esialeth briefly wondered how the game would end. If the chess table was really magic, it should have heard her remark about the king, but then how would either side win? And were the pieces getting more detailed, or was that a trick of the light? ✿

It never hurt to be polite. At her decline to his treat, he popped that one into his mouth as well, chewing it thoughtfully though he lacked the usual pleasant expression of enjoyment most who sucked on chocolate displayed. It was simply sustenance to him, after all. Eating such a thing for so long every day sapped the excitement out of it, for it was no longer a treat.
"Hm...knights alone are a bit ineffective. What's a king if he doesn't have a few dragons to protect him and his castle?" Eliot asked, though not without a but of thinly veiled bitterness. Whether he meant to or not, the table was leeching some personal experience from him on the subject. From his demeanor it was hard to tell if he was being resentful or just playing the game. The table transformed his pawns into small dragons. Blinking, he could've sworn he saw one move. What a strange table. Is this why they were never used? Blinking his eyes up from the board to his opponent, he gave her the nod to go on.

[googlefont=Meddon] Esialeth Rose E ven if Esialeth had been the most clueless, sheltered of sorcerers, she would have to be a fool to miss the sharp twang in the aether that revealed Eliot's discomfort. As it stood, Esialeth was quite well-versed in the language of empathy and compassion, so she felt the shift tenfold. The bitterness in his voice, combined with the shifting of aether, convinced her immediately that it would be wise to change the subject.
No matter. It was one thing to stand in court, tall and eloquent and glittering, herself against a crowd of traditionalist elders, and wield her words like sword and shield; it was quite another to pit herself relentlessly against someone who she just met and who, by all accounts, looked very, very tired.
So Esialeth decided to change the story; kills began to fall to mercy and lines of attack became light signals, love letters between opposing sides.
Of course, she did not shy away from the tragedies of war, instead emphasizing it, tugging at it. The pieces were impossibly detailed now, and the board was almost unrecognizable. The captured pieces stood to the facing the board, almost as if they were listening, with bated breath, for Eliot's move. ✿

Okay, perhaps the dragons hadn't been the best idea. He still seemed to resonate with the pieces even if his face didn't show it. Despite himself, he seemed to be playing out a scenario he was familiar with intimately, something unpleasant enough to rob the whimsy from the magical game. His brand of creativity was being drawn on experience, and while experience was the only source of knowledge, he felt it was his disadvantage here. It had been such a long time since he played a game, it saddened him to think he'd forgotten how to have fun that didn't revolve around his usual nightly activities.
A rueful smile tugged the left corner of his mouth upward. Admittedly he wasn't a very creative guy, so the next move he made was even weird to him, but the effort had to be made to move away from the scenario his psyche had crafted for him. With some dragons being captured and others being laying dead at the orders of the king, he went in a more light hearted direction. With a wave, he did away with the dragons altogether, turning them instead into violins for the knights to play. Or should he call them bards now? They began to play a sweet music, melancholy but peaceful. The tyrannical king became a composer, and soon all his pieces were that of an orchestra. The detailed pieces played with fervency, as if their lives depended on it. What did it matter which side won as long as peace was achieved?
"Hm. As I feared... I am no good at this," he spoke in a low tone, angling his face toward the floor as a peek of that awkward embarrassment resurfaced. One of his hands rested on the back of his neck, muted hues glancing up at his opponent.
