Hm. That made a little more sense. There were plenty of humans that valued intelligence and knowledge as displays of power rather than the ability to crush enemies. What good all that book stuff would do when your house was being bombed by said enemies eluded him, but he wasn't the scholarly type. Honor, though, he did understand. While he might not agree with her clan and family, he'd definitely been alive long enough to know it was different strokes for different folks and judging wasn't a helpful or even a decent thing to do. Kiran just wanted to understand his friend and student better, so he took the time to absorb and reason her words.
"So they expect almost too much of you mentally, since your physical condition was once so poor. That makes sense. Do well with what you've got," he commented, though it couldn't help but think at least some physical therapy and conditioning, no matter how mild, would have been a service to her rather than encouraging her to lounge around in perpetual studying. Kiran fancied balance better in that regard, though he couldn't say he wasn't unbalanced himself. He was the opposite. Far more interested and adept at combat and physical training than book work. He was here to try and even it out, actually....but it was just so dang boring he couldn't stand it. Perhaps Nai felt the same way about what he was trying to make her do right now. "Are you in better health now?" asked the phoenix, suddenly a little panicked. "I mean, should we be jogging? Have what I've put you through put you in danger of getting sick?" the words flew out of his mouth, anxious he'd done more harm than good. Kiran acted on assumptions more than he should!

And….There he goes. The girl internally sighed. Somehow directly expecting his reactions after she so subtly worded how she was sickly as a child. That was in the past, this is the present. And soon enough the future if she can keep her luck straight. But… the girl gave a pause. Uncertainty tried to bleed its way into her mind. Forming the infamous doubts she’s held for so long and was now collecting at the back of her mind. Healthy huh?...
The girl paused at the thought. But she couldn’t let him see her doubts. With practice eased she pushed it back behind gentle façade she wore over the small reluctant version of herself. The real her, who for so many years hid behind the image her family wanted from her. Only coming out whenever she’s in the privacy of her room away from the judging eyes of others.
“I’m fine now you silly flaming turkey.” The girl huffed in exasperation. Giving the impression that this wasn’t the first time she had to answer the question. Which…in reality isn’t, hence why she decided to hide it.
She wanted to say…without any hesitation that she was going to be fine… but the lingering thoughts of her other issues raised a dark cloud over it. “I’m fine see…?” She said. Jogging up ahead before turning back to face the phoenix. “It was in my childhood, honestly I think I outgrew it.” Nai chuckled softly. A bid in a way to change to the subject away from her health issues. “As for the education part you could say that… My clan is what you could consider noble blood within Western borders of Hisakawa… Sadly that meant politics. Since I’m…also the child of the head of house… It’s only logical they’re have high expectations…” Her smile strained at the end before she merely shook her head. It was her problem. Nothing she could do about it.

"Sounds like a bunch of unnecessary pressure and anxiety," Kiran commented lightly, calming from his near freak out. "When you release high expectations, you're free to enjoy things for what they are instead of what they should be. If you expect nothing from somebody you are never disappointed," added the boy, trotting along beside her in an almost overly exaggerated jog to keep his pulse up. He could tell she was tired of explaining herself and her past situations, but regardless of that, he needed to know these things. It explained so much about her. For her to be so nice, he was sure her parents were nice enough folks, but he personally felt they'd done her a disservice. It wasn't fair to expect so much from someone else. Lots of extended, crazy pressure made diamonds, true, but it also robbed people of the joy of life. Nai seemed so much older than she was. Was it because she had been robbed of her childhood between illness, studies, and politics? Relentless expectations of elders? Kiran had enjoyed a few childhoods, as did most phoenixes. They cycled through age as they needed. Everyone needed carefree years, in his opinion. If Nai hadn't even had ice cream prior to meeting him, and generally seemed like she should be knitting doilies and scolding children about running in the halls, his money was on her lack of child-like years. That was a real shame.
Turning to look at her, he couldn't help but wonder if he wasn't doing something similar to her as her parents were. Was he pushing unrealistic goals on her and expecting her to meet them? While it was in her best interest, what if this wasn't what she wanted. What if none of her life was what she wanted? Would she even know it? Being human, she only had one shot to do this life right. Sometimes he forgot how fleeting human life was. No wonder they felt all this pressure, only to be disappointed and not even getting a do-over. "Are you happy, Nai?"
