welcome to Eldritch Academy
In a world of myths and mysteries, the pinnacle of the magical academies exists. Eldritch Academy offers education to all ages and species but specializes in the study and training of one's innate mystical capabilities, often called Eldritch Energies, Powers, or Unknowns, but more formally known as their Talent. However, tensions run high with the nations only holding a fragile peace as the Talents that rival the epitomes of technology change the balance of power.
With the more recent uprising of evil Shades and introduction of combat-oriented programs into Talent-focused schools, nations grow more aggressive towards one another. The demand for resources grows, and skirmishes at the border of Arka and Mistere become more frequent. Monsters run into the nations from the Wildes, terrorizing villages and cities. The need for trained or in-training Hunters and Guardians has never been more urgent.

That dude's a phoenix. I just know it...
That was Kiran's thought process through the entire history class, meaning no learning was done. To be fair, it was mostly on the ancient war, something he was intimately familiar with due to personal experience. He may forget things here and there in his long life, but things like war didn't easily fade from the psyche. It really left its mark, watching friends and foes alike fall left and right. The endless battles, the smell of death. The older phoenix needed no reminder of his days as a soldier, so distracting himself from the factual inaccuracies wrought by time and history writers was the better option.
At the beginning of class, during introductions, there was a guy in class that caught his attention. Over time he'd developed a sort of sensory for souls like his. To him, phoenixes had a particular feel. It was a tickle at the back of his mind. He got that tickle when Nuada whatever-his-last-name-was spoke, and the thought of meeting a familiar soul on a campus as large as this was exciting. So far most of the people he'd met had been either troublesome or simply fleeting encounters. How in the world he could meet people in his dorm and never see them again, he had no idea, but perhaps forming a solid friendship with someone would make reliving this version of his academic days more bearable.
Once the class was over and everyone vacated the stuff room smelling of old parchment and an even older professor, his steps quickened to catch up to the male. He wanted to confirm what he already knew to be true. If he was wrong, he'd be super surprised. "Hey!" he called, dodging the slower walking students in front of him. "Nuada! Wait up, dude," he urged, closing the gap. Clapping the stranger on the shoulder, he leaned forward and grinning in greeting. "You a phoenix?"

History class. It was usually a class that Nuada enjoyed, he loved hearing the stories the stories and sometimes he liked to imagine himself in them. In particular his favorite subject was the stories of the heroes and battles of the Ancient War that had taken place long before he was ever born. While he would never admit it the young phoenix sometimes liked to imagine himself as one of those fighters, valiantly charging into battle fighting for what he believed was right. Part of the fairy knew that these were just fantasies and that real war was far darker, morbid, and tragic but for now it was easier for him to just to hold on to the pure ideals that filled his skull. Little did he know that staring at him from just across the room was a much older phoenix who had seen the darkness with war and all it entailed.
As class continued Nuada found it harder and harder to concentrate. He usually had a strong interest in this class but at the moment he was feeling a very strong urge that he knew very well. He wanted to hold a grand feast, a festival, any kind of celebration possible as long as it was rowdy and had a ton of people involved. While the fairy had his interest he was always a king of feasts at heart and couldn't go long without trying to find something to celebrate in an eccentric action. To make matters worse, as the boy's mind wander towards the idea of a grand feast he could feel a pair of eyes burning holes into the back of his head. Taking a very discrete look over his shoulder Nuada noticed a guy in the back of the class staring at him intensely. A small shiver ran up his spine as he quickly turned back to look towards the front of the class acting like he had never noticed.
As the bell rang the phoenix made a hurried escape attempt while trying to hide the fact he was fleeing from his observer. Unfortunately, it didn't appear that he had made his get away quick enough as he heard the man called out his name as he made his way down the hall. Turning around to great his classmate Nuada made a silent prayer he hadn't done anything to upset him. When was the last time he went drinking? He didn't remember going to a bar recently, there was no way he had accidentally gotten drunk and pissed this guy off at him somehow had he? Relief rapidly flooded throughout Nuada's body as he saw the smile on the man's face as he slapped him on the shoulder. At the very least he wasn't going to get punched.
What happened next, however, completely caught the young fairy off guard. How did this guy know that he was part phoenix? There was no way. As far as Nuada knew he didn't have any physical features that would give it away. A short moment of despair erupted through the fairies body as he touched the top of his head looking for any signs of feathers. He wasn't molting was he?! It only took a moment for the young phoenix to realize that he hadn't entered into that horrible phase of his species but that still left the question on how he had been identified. Well first things first he had to remember the name of his new companion. With a quick memory recall of the beginning of class Nuada responded.
"Hey Kiran! I'm only a half phoenix, why do you ask?

Half, huh? So he'd been half wrong...well, no, Kiran wouldn't think that way. He was also half right, and that was the sentiment he'd stick with. Smiling victoriously, he'd take any percentage of phoenix at this point. "Because I'm all phoenix, and you just seemed like a kindred soul," he replied, letting his hand drop from the other male's shoulder and settling in to match Nuada's pace. Yeah, it was probably awkward for others to meet like this, but Kiran wasn't one to beat around the bush. "I haven't had much luck finding friends on campus yet. A lot are really boring or have sticks up their butts. But a phoenix, now? We know how to kick back and enjoy life. Even a half phoenix should get that sentiment, yeah?" he asked, rubbing his hands together. One thing could be said for Kiran. He wasn't shy. Perhaps all the lifetimes had beaten such a notion out of him.
"Would you be interested in blowing off a little steam? I was thinking of going into town for a drink or two," Kiran made his offer. It was the first thing that popped into his head. He was tired of being on campus and wanted to go explore the city a bit, maybe see what the night life was like. It'd been a while since he'd had a good drink. And though he'd just met Nuada, he was following his gut that they would surely be friends and bond over their shared DNA. That's how it worked, right? Sure.

It quickly became clear why the other boy had hunted him down. It was the phoenix blood that he had inherited from his father. If he was going to be completely honest, Nuada really didn't know his father very well. His mother was the one who had taken care of him throughout his childhood. As such the fairy didn't really know too much about his phoenix heritage besides the abilities he was born with. Did they have some kind of sense to tell when their were other phoenixes around? The boy didn't remember feeling anything from Kiran when he walked over. Was the sense something he just didn't inherit?
"If you don't mind me asking, how did you know that I was at least part phoenix? I mean I doubt you went up to everyone after class and asked that question."
The reason why Kiran had been staring at him and chased him down the hall was only becoming more clear as the man explained he was having trouble making friends. I mean it wasn't something Nuada hadn't expected. He seemed like a good guy but he did have a certain way of interacting with people that the fairy could see frightening others. I mean the stare down he had been given during class had even made him want to run away. The younger phoenix was definitely going to have to teach him how to socialize at some point but for now he'd take up the man on his offer. After all, what could ever be wrong with having another friend.
"Even a half phoenix should get that sentiment? I think you seem to have a fundament misunderstanding going on her. I don't think being a phoenix has anything to do with kicking back and enjoying life. I mean for example, I may only be half a phoenix but I am certain that I could out party you any day at any hour."
Partying may not be many people's idea of kicking back and enjoying life but it definitely was what it meant for Nuada. A celebration was his natural habitat and from his strange perspective Kiran had just challenge him in it. It competitive spirit began to roar inside the fairy though he wasn't angry. No, he was excited. He had a feeling that he was going to be able to get along with the man in front of him and having a challenger was always a thrill for the young phoenix. This high spirit and energy only began to rise when Nuada heard what the Kiran said next.
A drink. Now you are speaking my language! Did you have a specific place in mind?

How did he know? That was hard to explain. Saying it was a gut feeling seemed like a cop out, but that was more of what it was. The flame in him was drawn to Nuada, that mystical divination flame that a phoenix could tap into sometimes. “Phoenix fire, dude,” Kiran waved him off, not feeling like explaining. Going into how every other species except phoenixes so far had the rigid borings to counter the exciting/actives seemed like a mountain he had little interest in climbing. That took too much time and energy. The bird boy was impatient at best, and campus life was cramping his style. Besides, given how Nuada was acting, he might not be as familiar with his brand of culture as he thought. While it was true phoenixes had assimilated throughout the world easily, he and his friends had mostly grown up in Hisakawa. That said, he’d yet to meet any phoenix that didn’t enjoy letting loose, reguardless of their stomping grounds. Kiran attributed that to general phoenix culture, even if it was unspoken.
Ah! And he wasn’t wrong. The fires within Nuada— assuming they were even there— might not speak to him, but a challenge concerning partying had been issued all the same! Kiran grinned at the half breed, devious and thrilled. “I wouldn’t get too full of myself if I were you. You might write a check your mouth can’t cash,” warned the boy with the long black hair. The sun glinting off it gave it a greenish tint, setting it apart from the black jacket he wore over a ripped up T-shirt. It was a miracle he still wore a shirt at all, but if they continued on with their plans, it would inevitably disappear as the night rolled on. “There’s a place called the Painted Lizard in the city. It’s not too far of a walk, but they make this drink there called a graveyard. Those should give us an idea of just who can out party who, right?”
He wasn’t wrong. Perhaps it was an unwise misstep to have such an establishment that close to the school, or perhaps the business brought in from stressed students and teachers was exactly what the owner hoped to capitalize on. Whichever it was, the Painted Lizard had enough colored neon lights to seem attractive to the younger crowd, while the plushy inside was comfortable enough for those who wanted to lounge and sip as well as gulp and dance on the floor or at the bar proper. Better yet, the employees seemed understanding that many species’ looks did not reflect their age, and thus asked no questions unless it was a toddler wobbling in from new legs and not drunkenness. Kiran wasn’t worried about it, since he definitely met the age requirement and could age his appearance up if he absolutely must. So far, though, he hadn’t had to do so to get a stiff drink here, making it all the more alluring.

There was a fire burning in Nuada's soul alright. A fire that demanded constant stimulation in the form of thrills, antics, parties, feasts, and festivals. A flame that's soul desire was to take the mundanity out of everyday life and replace it with the joyful chaos of a celebration. However, the young phoenix had never really gotten to know much about the culture of his father so the only expression that passed over the boy's face when Kiran said phoenix fire was one of pure confusion. However, after hearing his new companions response to his challenge his face lit up once again. It seemed that the man in front of him was just as competitive as he was and Nuada had never been happier.
"The Painted Lizard, huh? Sounds like an interesting place! However, there's something you still seem to be misunderstanding here. I'm not writing a check my mouth can't cash. I'm going to drink you under the table regardless of what we are having, even if its this Graveyard you mentioned. So lead the way to your chosen location of defeat."
The greatest smile had spread across the boy's face as he spoke again. While he was just saying these things to tease Kiran he also fully believed every word. No one the fairy had ever met had been able to out drink him in a straight competition and he had gone against many. He had taken down dwarfs, goblins, elves, ghosts, humans, other fairies, demons, witches, dryads, elementals, a few dragons, and even some woman who had claimed to be some kind of demon goddess once. As far as he was concerned there wasn't any entity in the world that could gulp down more alcohol than he could before passing out. Kiran wasn't going to be any exception to this rule and if somehow he was than Nuada was going to have far more fun at this school than he thought. Regardless the boy was fairly certain that he was going to get along just fine with Kiran, even though he original thought the man was a stalker.
As they made there way into the town the fairy glance at every store they passed with a mild curiosity about what could be found in each and everyone of them. Yet his mind never truly stopped focusing on the goal in front of him. The Painted Lizard and the Graveyard. He had to wonder how he hadn't heard about this establishment before today. The bars he had been going to were much further away and not nearly as decorative. The young phoenix approved of the neons lights the owner had decorated the entrance with that in his opinion gave it a festival like vibe.
"You really know how to pick a place. This looks like its going to be fun!"
Despite being fifty five years in age and having the appearance of 19 year old Nuada's excitement almost appeared to be on the level of an over energetic child. Once they were inside the fairy jumped into one of the establishment's plush chairs and yelled out to the bar for two graveyards before making eye contact with Kiran.
"You sure your up to this? Don't have a girlfriend your going to disappoint by getting totally wasted do you?"

Kiran let the cocky male's assurance pass over him without comment, possibly in an even a cockier move. A non-verbal 'we'll see' or 'I won't dignify that with an argument', perhaps. He simple showed the half-phoenix the way to the coolest bar he'd found so far, taking the matching chair across a low table from Nuada. Oh yes, this was going to be fun. He hadn't had a real challenge since Fang was captured toward the end of the war. To date, Fang was the only one that could out drink him, and he suspected it had something to do with some potion cheating beforehand. Hopefully Nuada wasn't blowing smoke. "This place offers the strongest drinks with a comfortable environment to drink them in. Can't find much better!" he grinned, rubbing his hands together eagerly. After tossing a figure in the air to get someone's attention, the bartender dressed in black nodded acknowledgement and directed a waiter toward them when he was finished with some other customers toward the back.
Nuada again taunted him, to which he leaned toward and locked competitive eyes with him. A sly smirk pulled his lips up on one side. "Nah, no one ties me down. All I've got is a bossy roommate, and she can get over it if I come in a little loud to sleep later," he chuckled, of course not admitting to getting wasted as he leaned back into the plush. The waiter finally appeared. "Graveyards for both of us, and keep 'em comin'," Kiran instructed. The waiter paused, quirking a brow as a sweat drop of uncertainty appeared. "Graveyards...are you sure?" he asked, perhaps the most reasonable and responsible of the three. "Positive. And don't let Horus water them down at all. We want the full drink. We're having a bit of a contest," the long-haired phoenix grinned toothily, sliding out of his jacket and draping it over the arm of the chair. The man nodded and shook his head, disappearing to put in the tall order.
"Don't be alarmed when it gets here. It's a tall glass filled with black liquid, but it tastes alright. The mix is equal parts vodka, rum, gin, tequila, triple sec, whiskey, scotch, lager beer, and stout. I've seen it knock a normal man flat out halfway through, but we aren't normal men, now are we?"
Soon enough two glasses clinked into the table and Kiran picked on up, holding it out to customarily clunk against Nuada's before consuming. "To fast friends and a manly challenge!"

Strongs drinks and comfort. Was there anything else Nuada really could ask for? The answer is yes. If Nuada could have everything his way he'd have the whole bar on their feet, dancing, singing, and drinking the night away. Yet the fairy knew that not everyone shared his same ideals and he simply didn't have enough charisma to convince an entire bar to follow him in an eccentric celebration before getting kicked out. At the same time, causing a ruckus and risking getting banned from the bar was definitely not something the boy wanted. It would be awful to lose such an interesting drinking spot after just one visit. So instead the boy would simply focus on the task at hand. Learning about the individual in front of him, enjoying the night, and drinking the poor fellow under the table. Though considering the way Kiran had acted towards his taunts Nuada was starting to think this was going to be as easy as the other contests he had gotten himself in.
There was no way for him to tell how old Kiran was, due the man's phoenix physiology, and as such the fairy had no idea if he was dealing with a real veteran or not. Kiran could've been entire lifetimes older than him and he'd never know. While in most situations this didn't really matter for Nuada it meant that it was very likely that his new companion had far more experience drinking than he did. At the same time it also meant he could probably get a lot of stories out of him if he managed to get him drunk before he did. The situation as it was now could only be described as being high risk vs high reward but this idea only made Nuada excited. Tonight really was going to be the most interesting night of his life at the Academy so far.
"It really must be an interesting drink you picked. I think you've made the bartender nervous."
With that the phoenix would let out a hearty laugh. It seemed the contest truly was going to be an interesting one and the man couldn't help but laugh at the thought that he could be returning to his dorm completely wasted tonight. Hopefully his roommate would mind too much if he can stumbling in at the late hours of the night. If they complained about him waking up them up though he could simply solve the problem with his fairy dust. No harm, no foul after all. As the drinks arrived Nuada's eyes flashed with a competitive fire as his mouth curled further into the shape of a smile. It was definitely an impressive drink. A tall glass and a number of alcohols mixed into it, there was no wonder the bartender looked nervous when Kiran had ordered.
"Most definitely not. I'm fairly certain any normal man would've died of liver disease long ago!"
With that Nuada tapped his glass against Kiran's and moved it towards his lips.
"Too life lived to its fullest!"
A quick movement of the boy's wrist tilted the glass upward as he began to drink. Maybe it was because of competitive fire burning in his gut or maybe it was because he didn't have an experience drinking anything quite like the Graveyard. Either way it would be quite clear from any onlookers that Nuada was drinking just a bit too quickly for what was in his hand.

More like, to several lives lived to the fullest for the older of the two. A devious smile crept onto Kiran's mouth as his younger kindred spirit sucked down the foreboding drink. While he knew better than to chug it, it would reflect poorly on him if he didn't follow suit, right? didn't want to give Nuada the impression that he wouldn't be able to keep up. Turning his own up, it rushed down his gullet and he tapped the glass down loudly enough for the bartender to see he needed to get started on another round. Kiran hadn't been kidding when he dictated to keep them coming. "WHEW!" he hollered, the strong taste and alcohol content feeling like it was running right from the back to his throat down his spine. "Alright! One down...what do you think of it?" he asked, energy level only rising in the excitement of a real challenge. Others he'd challenged to this punked out after the first drink, so his eyes were bright as he waited to see how his new friend would react.
"He gets nervous every time I order it. It's only for the strong hearted and serious partiers, and I'm both. I image you are as well?" he goaded, trying to keep the competitive hybrid interested. Two more black drinks appeared off of a skeptical waiter's tray. Some of the previously uninterested patrons were now glancing at the two, knowing full well that no mortal man could put more than one down without reeling their way either out the front door or into the bathroom. As if aware that they now had a full audience, Kiran picked up the next glass and gulped it down too, returning and empty glass to the table for pick up and replacement. "Hahaha! Oh yeah, this is gonna be good. I bet they're taking bets on us, buddy."
The drinks would keep coming, so in the interest of keeping tabs on Nuada's sobriety as well as his own, he thought to strike up some normal conversation. "So! Nuada...where ya from?"
