welcome to Eldritch Academy
In a world of myths and mysteries, the pinnacle of the magical academies exists. Eldritch Academy offers education to all ages and species but specializes in the study and training of one's innate mystical capabilities, often called Eldritch Energies, Powers, or Unknowns, but more formally known as their Talent. However, tensions run high with the nations only holding a fragile peace as the Talents that rival the epitomes of technology change the balance of power.
With the more recent uprising of evil Shades and introduction of combat-oriented programs into Talent-focused schools, nations grow more aggressive towards one another. The demand for resources grows, and skirmishes at the border of Arka and Mistere become more frequent. Monsters run into the nations from the Wildes, terrorizing villages and cities. The need for trained or in-training Hunters and Guardians has never been more urgent.

take an angel by the wings beg her now for anything beg her now for one more day
She woke in increments, her senses alert as soon as she had the capacity to do so; the first thing she did was inventory her fingers and toes, rolling over with an undignified grunt. Her throat felt as if someone had stuffed it with thorns—and perhaps someone did, for she felt that she had been asleep for a very long time—but she soon decided that she should figure out how she got here, for the quaint, sunlit room she found herself in was unfamiliar indeed.
She rose out of the bed in an attempt to pace about the room, falling back to the bed almost immediately with a cry of pain; nevertheless, she remembered. The caravan—the ambush—her supplies—the winter—
The click of a door.
An overcast-white figure walked in, holding something in its hands, but that was hardly important, for when it turned, she felt her stomach give a sickening lurch.
It is said that witches wield their beauty as surely any weapon; her finespun hair, silver-white against the sunlit window, fell over her shoulders in a single cascading wave, and her eyes burned gold over her perfect coral lips.
This woman could have taken twenty legions’ worth of soldiers alone.
And yet—there was something off about the way the woman held herself, about her fluid movements, bonelessly graceful—and about the way her eyes burned. As if she was something more than human.
The girl had been taught to read people in the slightest gesture, the lightest touch. She was, if nothing else, perceptive.
So when she failed to sense anything from the woman but age and power, she felt very, very scared.

A twist in the aether, a cry for help. Burning in her very blood.
Running through the forest, black as pitch under the new moon, aetheric fire trilling up and down her fingertips, both a beacon and a warning: do not interrupt me. And, at the same time, a call—where are you? what do you need?
She tracks the source of the magic—call, answer, call, answer—until she feels it sputter out—no. She breaks into a sprint, crashing through the dense forest, burning with magic and adrenaline.
At last, she sees her, curled in on herself, the last dredges of fire magic snuffed out by the cold. Witch, she thinks, for they all feel connections to each other, mixed blood or not. She kneels next to the girl, who is almost corpse-cold—the only sign that she’s alive is the faintest shiver at the touch of foreign magic.
Esialeth’s magic isn’t made for fighting armies caked in blood—but for fighting off demons, ghosts, the cold—it works just fine. She gathers the girl in her arms—goddess above she’s heavy—keeps her magic wrapped rictus-tight around them, and makes her way back to the cottage.
“Ah, you’re awake, then,” she says mildly. The girl’s eyes widen, either from shock or fear—that’s not a great sign.
“How are you feeling?” Esialeth tries instead. “Have some water,” she says, placing the cup in the girl’s hands.
She says does nothing but look at her with that peculiar expression.
This was going to take a while.

The mug was warm. The girl flinched slightly at the contact, cognizant as ever of her distaste towards touch. She was hesitant to drink, for she couldn’t fathom why a being like the...woman would want to save her, but her head throbbed incessantly enough that she pressed the cup to her lips.
It was just water. Whatever this woman wanted, she hid her cards well.
“Thank you,” the girl rasped after taking a long sip. She brought the mug back to her lap. The woman’s face was scrunched in concern. For what reason, she couldn’t tell.
“I’m fine,” the girl continued. “If you’ll just give me a moment, I’ll take my leave.”
No use waiting, especially with the woman’s unpredictable power. It was best to leave when it was still light out and let her dragon’s blood tough out the winter.

The witch—no the girl—is scared of her. Of what? Esialeth is...nothing. She’s nothing except for her stolen power and iron will. Of course, she’s not sure she can convince the girl. She decides to change the topic, at least for the time being.
“Ah...I’d advise against that…” she trails off. She should at least pretend to offer a compromise, even though she has no intention of letting this girl bare the bitter winter until she's well. “Maybe after you’ve rested a bit more...in the meantime, what is your name?”
It’s an innocuous question, she thinks. Small talk has never been her strong suit, but she couldn’t possibly have failed badly enough to make the girl flinch.
“Let me revise that. In the meantime...what should I call you?”

The girl was suspicious of that woman. Suspicious of her perfect voice, of her lack of demands, and of the too-warm light streaming through the window, for she was sure that even though the storm calmed, the biting cold did not.
But what caught her the most, clawed at a part of her she wished to remain hidden—was how freely the woman offered favor, name, hospitality—all things that, as the girl knew, came with a price. Witches are selfish creatures, her mother had said as she braided poppies into her hair. The only people you can trust are your family. Everything else you must bargain for. Fight for.
And if her mother had spent a second too long in a dragon’s lair, who was to know? She was just a child. Still is, as her mother likes to remind her.
So. When the girl saw this woman, this angel, this witch, she did not offer her name. She did not put on a false smile, for she knew that like recognizes like, that this witch would surely expect her to be meek, foolish, so she could strategize her way into a deal. And because the girl knew that even the finest masks become real with time, she refused let that happen.
The girl’s voice was hoarse, ragged with fever and the slightest hint of fear, and she hated herself for showing even that much. “Call me Tiamaranta,” she said, feeling the air around her burn. It comforted her; replaced the sunlight with her own heat, an even, static quantity. “I’m not going to play your games. Tell me what you want or throw me out.”

“I’m not playing any games,” Esialeth snaps immediately, surprising even herself. She takes a step back, then says, more softly this time, “I’ll get you some food and more water. Try to rest up.”
She steps out of the room, leans against the door. Distantly, she wonders what could have made her react so strongly. Perhaps it’s the girl’s fear.
Or perhaps it’s because Esialeth knows damn well that that could’ve been her in the twin-sized bed, closed off and isolating herself from help.
She shakes herself out of her reverie, prepares the food, and sets the dishes delicately onto a tray. It’s a simple fare, just bread, soup, and more warm water, but she doubts the girl’s ability to stomach anything more.

When she was finally alone, the girl considered, briefly, the merits of biting off her own tongue, as the famed dragon Abraxas once did while disguised as a human, to lower his worth to his captors; to bite off her tongue was to metaphorically seal the bottle before it spilled, while physically doing the very opposite (what with the blood pouring out of her mouth until her heart had no more blood to move). Messy, perhaps, but effective, and she would still be able to practice combat and some spellwork, since the rescue caravan would arrive in just a short while.
Ah, but the way the woman snapped… “I’m not playing any games,” she had said. What could she mean by that?
Just as the girl decided to keep her tongue firmly attached to the rest of her body, the woman reemerged, balancing a breakfast tray while her back held open the door. Had the woman been anything less than the eternally graceful creature that she was, the girl would be convinced that the tray would topple and the entire room would smell of tomatoes for far longer than was actually appropriate. As it was, the tray did not fall, but the room still smelled like tomatoes.
Such is the nature of food.
The meal consisted of the following: one marginally overlarge serving of creamy tomato soup, one glass of warm water, and two slaps of bread (the soup-dipping kind).

Esialeth is hesitant to leave the girl alone, but she herself likes privacy when she eats, so she leaves the room with a quiet “I’ll leave you to it” before closing the door behind her. When she’s out, she feels this ache in her chest, suddenly.
It’s confusing.
She goes to her study to mix a fever suppressant and, perhaps, she thinks, to look up causes for heartburn.

The girl had half a mind to dash the soup bowl to pieces against the floor, but she was actually quite hungry and was in no mood to smell tomatoes for far longer than was reasonably expected for someone to smell tomatoes.
To her horror, the soup and bread were delicious, if not exactly “haute cuisine” as her mother insisted. The woman could have hidden sedatives in there, she thought. Then she would be truly horrid.
There were no sedatives, and for the next few minutes, the girl remained painfully conscious.
She then set the tray aside and attempted to pace about the room angrily, discovering, rather crudely, that she was in no shape to make a heroic escape.
Growling to herself (then immediately stopping because her throat felt full of thorns), she stumbled out of the room, weakly holding her water glass.
“Hey, hey! Why’d you—” she coughed. “If you’re so busy making good on your promise not to kill me, why don’t you—” She coughed, more emphatically this time, her voice hoarse by the time she was done. “Why don’t you get me some more water?”

Esialeth feels her eyelid twitch in annoyance. This girl...this girl lacks any sort of self-preservation. It’s as infuriating as it is saddening, and Esialeth has half a mind to respond kindly before she realizes that perhaps she ought to be a touch firmer. And she doubts the girl would appreciate such gentleness.
“It would behoove you to stay in bed, or, at the very least, sit down,” she begins, “And to answer your question, there’s a mug right there on the counter. Not drugged,” she adds sarcastically.
Beat.
“What are you waiting for, then? Go, go! You’re going to collapse! I’ll bring the mug over!”

Infuriating as she was, the woman was right. The girl was already feeling the effects of her stunt, and it was only by sheer force of will that she didn’t lean into the woman as she walked.
Settling on the bed again, she could do naught but glare angrily, sipping from the mug with reluctance. Lemon, honey, and a touch of brandy. Ten hells. Even the tea is good.
She would have argued further, but the tea was heavenly and the bed was warm, so even with the too-bright sunlight, she was powerless to resist the pull of sleep.
The last thing she remembers is the empty mug being tugged gently from her hands.

Esialeth is beginning to wonder if her cottage is to become a one-at-a-time walk in. First him, now her...walking all over her damned heart. Gods. What do I do now? It’s not like I can watch her until she wakes up. That would be weird.
In the end, Esialeth does what she does best: distracting herself from her problems by doing very sophisticated and detailed work. In an area unrelated to that of said problem. She spends twenty-seven minutes cleaning the kitchen, twenty-nine preparing in her cleverly designed bathroom (the acquisition of running water this far into the woods requires...creative solutions), and five hundred and thirty-nine pruning her garden. I could have used magic and gotten it all done in a quarter hour, but it’s nice to feel dirt once in a while. Oh, right! I was distracting myself from a problem. Damn, I’m good.
She makes herself a tall glass of strawberry lemonade as a reward and sits in her backyard to read poetry.
