In a world of myths and mysteries, the pinnacle of the magical academies exists. Eldritch Academy offers education to all ages and species but specializes in the study and training of one's innate mystical capabilities, often called Eldritch Energies, Powers, or Unknowns, but more formally known as their Talent. However, tensions run high with the nations only holding a fragile peace as the Talents that rival the epitomes of technology change the balance of power.
With the more recent uprising of evil Shades and introduction of combat-oriented programs into Talent-focused schools, nations grow more aggressive towards one another. The demand for resources grows, and skirmishes at the border of Arka and Mistere become more frequent. Monsters run into the nations from the Wildes, terrorizing villages and cities. The need for trained or in-training Hunters and Guardians has never been more urgent.

“Well to clarify, it is mostly a numbers job. Though there are days where they have me go out to collect things personally.” Budgets were a thing, and while the market could provide many of the things they needed, it sometimes just wasn’t practical. Frankly. He’d wanted to work for the school he felt he owed so much to. Being a teacher hadn’t been a role he’d felt like he’d be able to do. There were many positions in the school. The story of how he’d wound up in this one in particular was a bit of a long one though.
He enjoyed the numbers more than he enjoyed the hunting bits, Ozaki would admit that. “Its a bit of a long story why I went into this job in particular. But if need be I can get hands-on. What happened the other day with Nyx… I was just surprised was all. It took me off guard.”
When he was younger he had been outright hemophobic. While the vampire had come a long way since then there were still times where it would rear its head again. The deer skull thing had been one of those times.

When it all came down to it, Ozaki preferred hunting over fighting. He did like the hunt, perhaps too much, but that was to be expected to his species. And perhaps from the fact he refused to actually bite into his prey. That might help a bit but… He couldn’t risk it. “I wasn’t planning things honestly Sharaku. I freaked out.” His good old friend hemophobia had chosen to rear its head at that very moment. He’d all but stamped it out, but push too far and it’d come right back up again like a ghost. “I’m sorry. Not everyone can be as calm as you about things.”
His reaction had been quite bad though.. But weren’t his reactions always terrible anyways? Ugh… Ozaki really had to stop thinking like that.

His problems? Ozaki was surprised to hear he had any. Ooooh… Yah, now that he explained it, that made sense. Sharaku wasn’t wrong in assuming that Ozaki had been feeling rather… Discontented by the were-vamp’s attitude a moment before. He’d been so close to tossing one of the books Sharaku had been looking at at his face. Ozaki shrugged when Sharaku said that he might be better off than him. Perhaps in some ways, but he couldn’t really argue with what Sharaku had said.
“I do. I just didn’t fully comprehend what her nature was. That it could cause her such pain not to fight.” Bani had tried to show him was a blood devil was, and Ozaki had been angry at him for it. But he’d been right all along. Of course he was. He was a blood devil. He knew more than Ozaki ever could. “Now I do though.”
And he wasn’t quite sure what he would do when Nyx returned to her previous self. He supposed they’d just have to see.

“When you’re used to a certain type of pain its easy to just accept it as just part of life… At least that’s what I’m assuming is the case. That’s what one of the blood devil’s I’ve been in contact seems to think.” There was a whole basket of worms with what Sharaku was talking about right now. “But I can only imagine that there is a lot more than we know. I know there was a lot of neglect with her previous… Caretaker.” He had been avoiding the word father because it almost didn’t seem fitting. But caretaker was even less so.
“And the more I hear about him, the less I think it was ignorance, and more intentional.” That man had been playing a dangerous game starving a blood devil for years on end. Ozaki drew his hand through his hair as his mind mulled through that. How had he gotten Nyx so throughly conditioned to ignore her own base instincts? There had to be more. So much more.

As much as it came off nonsensical to believe constant pain was how life was meant to be, he couldn’t say it was impossible to get used to things one wasn’t supposed to. It felt like she accepted it a little too easily, but it wasn’t like he knew everything about her life before she came to this school. “It most likely was on purpose. She told me he was a mercenary hunter. I’d assume he was taking care of her for a reason in the first place. Her memory loss was probably not a random occurrence, and it’s a high chance the man was involved with whatever that happened to her. Especially if she used to be like that Fluffy persona of hers. Following a God and spilling blood in his name? I can see how she’d make a lot of enemies that would want her out of the picture. Given that her kind are almost impossible to kill, making her into a harmless kid…seems like a sound plan if they had nothing else…” How, when and all that was still largely a mystery, but overall, he wouldn’t be surprised that her current state was in fact a result of someone fearing her actions and wanting to shut her down. Thus all the intensive efforts to keep her away from violence. Didn’t answer why she took to it as devotedly, but still.
He’d sigh as he got off the table. “Anyway, before I forget….in regards to the previous subject. If you do have something you’d like to say to me, I’d prefer you don’t pretend everything is fine. If there’s anything that gets on my nerves, it’s people who have a problem with something I’ve done, refuse to tell me, and then get mad at me for not being nicer later as if I was meant to know exactly what I’ve done to upset them.” Honestly, stuff like that happened so often he was seriously starting to consider giving everyone a disclaimer by default. While he was aware he couldn’t force people to be straight with him all the time, it would sure be damn helpful to not be seen as an asshole and given absolutely no explanation as to what was bothering the person to the point they’d think of him that way. |

Ozaki nodded at the mercenary part. He had heard that bit. All of this made sense. Sharaku had connected more of the dots than he have even known existed.
And now here came a guy asking him to be honest with him. Ozaki was half thinking considering he was apparently so bad in hiding his inner shit from him anyway, perhaps he might as well. But naturally there were many things that Ozaki wasn’t comfortable with sharing with just anyone. Sharaku didn’t know what his shit was, but he had a good enough nose… No that wasn’t a werewolf comment damn it… Though now of course it was. Anyways he had a keen enough eye to see that something was wrong, but not what in particular.
He had thought that Sharaku just didn’t give a damn at all about anything. But now he was seeing that perhaps it was more that he had a hard time showing it. Just because he wasn’t as expressive didn’t mean he wasn’t feeling something. The fact that they were talking about Nyx at all showed Sharaku had some measure of care for her.
And given that… Ozaki ruffled the back of his hair. He had meant to tell Dawn this first. “Right… I’ll see what I can do about that. I guess while we’re here there is maybe something else I should tell you…”
Should he though? Sharaku was close to Nyx. He should know. Right? “I’ll be reporting this to the right people to try and prevent anything from happening. But in case that isn’t enough. He’s… Actually trying to find a way to kill her. Askel’s been capturing blood devils and torturing them, trying to figure out how to do it.”

“I got the number of a blood devil while I was back at their base during this research trip with Nyx. She and I talked and managed to figure that its probably Askel doing the kidnappings. They’ve had a few of their kind taken. How they haven’t captured him yet when they’ve managed to recover most everyone? I don’t know.” Even a young blood devil had been taken. This Askel had no boundaries whatsoever. “I haven’t decided yet. I figured I’d talk to Dawn about it first… I’m not really sure how to tell Nyx the man she used to, and perhaps still does regard as her father is out to kill her. Dawn’s probably not the best person to talk about how to break news like that… But then again, who really is?”

There was no way to say it without actually saying it, so she'd have to deal with the same knowledge one way or another. Delaying it and trying to find the perfect way first could just end up leading to her finding out herself first if the man tried to make an attempt on her, or some rumors actually slipped out into more public view. That, or she'd get her memories back, rendering the revelation somewhat unnecessary. That could happen anytime at this point, considering the Fluffy incident had already been quite close there. He'd half shrug there. "Besides...I think she already has an idea, even if she doesn't go around admitting it much. He had basically dumped her here and abandoned her, not coming back at all like a proper parent would. I think she realizes something's off at the very least. Would she really let you act as her dad if she was still firmly believing he's the best and will come back around?" Clearly, there would be no need for that, were she still completely sure he'd keep taking care of her. She was stuck with the worldview she had been convinced of, but that didn't have to mean she didn't even notice she was being kicked away. |

Easy for Sharaku to say. Thought a small bitter voice in Ozaki’s head… But he was right. There was no perfect or good way to tell Nyx. He was still planning on talking to Dawn today, as he was currently under the impression that there was likely much that Nyx hadn’t yet told Dawn. He almost wouldn’t be surprised if Nyx hadn’t told Dawn anything about the research trip. “Suppose you’re right there… Better for her to know.” Even if telling her would suck, it would be better than Askel showing up one day and just… Doing that.
Even if he had abandoned her, and even if a part of her knew he had done so without any good will… It would still hurt to hear. "Hey. Hope you don't mind me asking. But can we exchange numbers? I can send you a picture of the man so you know who to look out for." Ozaki had his bats out looking for Askel, but the more eyes the better.

“W-what? I wouldn’t do that!” That was going to make Osaki turn beet red in about five minutes. He pretty quickly figured that it was a joke. A surprise, coming from Sharaku. Oh geez. He pulled out his phone and tapped the contacts button, pulling up the New contacts form before sliding it over to Sharaku, not making eye contact. He was all flustered now.
“You know I don’t think he would, but I figure you’re probably not in school all the time. And if you saw him around at all knowing where that was would be good.” If he was trying to think of a way to kill Nyx Ozaki was of the personal opinion that a pre-emptive strike was every inch called for.
