welcome to Eldritch Academy
In a world of myths and mysteries, the pinnacle of the magical academies exists. Eldritch Academy offers education to all ages and species but specializes in the study and training of one's innate mystical capabilities, often called Eldritch Energies, Powers, or Unknowns, but more formally known as their Talent. However, tensions run high with the nations only holding a fragile peace as the Talents that rival the epitomes of technology change the balance of power.
With the more recent uprising of evil Shades and introduction of combat-oriented programs into Talent-focused schools, nations grow more aggressive towards one another. The demand for resources grows, and skirmishes at the border of Arka and Mistere become more frequent. Monsters run into the nations from the Wildes, terrorizing villages and cities. The need for trained or in-training Hunters and Guardians has never been more urgent.

In hearing Sharaku stop scrubbing Ozaki glanced over his shoulder and was a bit surprised to see Sharaku’s normally deadpan expression had actually changed a bit. He hadn’t thought that question would be a tough one. He returned to scrubbing down the unicorn, not wanting to be caught staring as Sharaku began to speak.
Right. He had filed his own fangs hadn’t he? Ozaki thought as he ran his tongue over the still flattened surface of his canines. Why the fuck hadn’t he thrown away that damn silver file years ago? Sure he had lost it and kept forgetting. But when he’d actually put his mind to it Ozaki had been able to find it in under ten minutes. He’d done it under the influence of the tainted blood, but that didn’t remove the fact he’d done it. He’d wanted himself to suffer. And for the briefest of moments when the vampire he had captured escaped and he had felt overwhelmed by their power… He’d wanted to die. Rather, he had accepted its inevitability.
It’d only been a second. But for that second he’d thought it might be better to die than to continue being this monstrous thing. What a thing for an Asahi to think. Of course he’d run shortly after, and still ended up being captured himself. Honestly Ozaki still wasn’t sure why he was alive. Why that vampire hadn’t just killed him with how angry he was.
This tainted blood had brought out his self-destructive nature as much as it had the Asahi in him. The teachings his father had imparted on him that he tried so desperately to crush out of existence. He might not believe them any more, but every so often they were there in the back of his mind… The things the tainted blood had brought out him had already existed. It just brought them to the forefront.
… What kind of reading was Sharaku getting from this he wondered. He really should be doing better in controlling where his thoughts wandered. Yah. That wasn’t going to happen around this guy. The questions he asked were too probing. It must be maddening to only be getting tiny responses to in depth questions. Someone like this would know there was much more than Ozaki was saying. Short answers to probing invasive questions.
Yah… That’s what they were. Invasive. Why did Sharaku think he had the right to any of these answers? Why couldn’t Sharaku just mind his own business?
The answer to that was likely he could literally see Ozaki’s suffering. And did want to help. Even if his mannerisms were a bit off key. It was hard for Ozaki to believe he wanted to just help with no ulterior motive. Though perhaps the ulterior motive in this case was he just wanted people to stop hurting themselves. Of which Ozaki did make somewhat of a regular habit of it. Not directly, but by putting himself in dangerous situations. Like the whole hell escapade he had been musing on before Sharaku had talked him out of it.
…
Yuuto would be happy to see how much he was suffering though, wouldn’t he? Oh dear… What a thought. Ozaki did his best to constrain the rage that roared up with it. He kept a decent poker face, made all the easier from the fact he wasn’t facing Sharaku. But that didn’t very well help if they could sense your state of mind. Did it? “Guess those people would be happy to see me like this.”
Bastard. Ozaki’s fist clenched around the brush in his hand, but eased his grip before he could break the thing.

Ozaki was glad when the other man stopped talking. It would give him time to unwind a bit from his present mullings. As much as he could any how. With as much as had happened to him recently the moment he turned away from one thing there was just another to take its place. He wished he could be as calm as Sharaku seemed… But like the were-vamp had said, that was only what he seemed to be. There was probably something going on in there. Definitely.
This unicorn did not kneel down when it was time to get to its back, so Ozaki was forced to go get a stepping stool to reach that area. Embarrassing yes. But he’d just ignore that embarrassment for now. Just focus on the unicorns. Let everything else fall to the wayside. Forget his murderous father, his unpredictable sire, his apparently dead childhood friend, and his daughter’s broken leg. All the ducks were lined up. Now he just had to ignore them for awhile.
Ozaki was almost certain he’d managed to evade being followed by his sire’s goons. So they wouldn’t know he was here. He could afford to let that one go for now. Nyx he’d find and talk to later. Might not fix things. But at least it’d be better than nothing… She probably would just be happy he was okay. None of those things were here. All he had to do was look away from them and just focus on getting these dirty furred unicorns spotless.

The Vamp Wolf | He was silent because he was getting tired of this. It was more effort than it seemed, and in all fairness, the guy wasn’t completely wrong when it came to the idea of him not caring that much. It wasn’t even that he couldn’t, but he had never been given a lot of reason to want to be invested in the vampire’s life. What did he even know about the guy? The main reason why the two of them ended up being more closely acquainted was Nyx, and frankly it was always about her when it came to him. The guy was upset over her inevitably having to change, wanted to go to hell because of her and now was feeling down because he hurt her among other things. When he took a moment to think about it, it was easy to notice that pretty much the only things he knew about the guy had to do with the girl by extension. It was always Nyx this, Nyx that so far. Besides maybe his job, but that wasn’t even a secret considering he worked at the school. What was he supposed to feel about the guy? They didn’t even know each other at all. He could attempt to care in some way, but it was in the end rather lackluster, given his considerably piss poor connection with the guy. None of it helped.
It was obvious enough, as they didn’t even talk about anything else whenever that stuff wasn’t on the table. He’d almost bet the vampire was all too happy to let the silence go on, and while he could easily break it with something random, he wasn’t feeling too inspired. His generally pushy behavior aside, he was nevertheless aware when he wasn’t exactly welcome. It wasn’t that hard to tell.
He’d pat the unicorn who started nudging him slightly for his spacing out, frowning at the messy mane before trying to brush the tangles out. This job was actually kind of boring after a while. Well, he’d never make a good farm boy, he knew that much. Cleaning maintenance all day was a stale type of work, unless there was more to it than that. |

The silence was a better option, but he could not help but be worried if he may have offended or angered Sharaku in some manner. Annoyed at the very least, if not the other stronger emotions. He had finished grooming an entire unicorn and bringing in another before getting up the nerve to speak again. “So… What are you going to school for?”
It was awkward being this quiet, maybe changing the topic to Sharaku would be easier. It was always easier to talk about other people than himself.

The Vamp Wolf | “…?” He had actually gotten quite distracted during the prolonged bout of silence, making him kind of blank when the other spoke up out of nowhere. On top of that, he didn’t have a very concise answer to the inquiry at hand. He’d offer a half shrug after a moment of consideration. “Because I can? I don’t have an exact reason. I don’t really think I particularly need to be learning all that drivel, but the school does have quite the reputation, doesn’t it? Besides, it makes for an easy living space too.” Staying at the dorms made a lot of stuff simpler, albeit he wouldn’t deny it’d be a bit nicer to not live right by crowds of loud students.
That said, he didn’t have much else to be doing with his life for the time being, and sticking around a populated area with lots of things going on in it was never too bad of a choice. Because in all honesty, he certainly wasn’t here for the nose in books experience. He’d bet he wouldn’t need most of this stuff later on, if it wasn’t something he already knew in the first place. |

That was not the answer Ozaki had been expecting. But considering his own obstinacy perhaps he ought to have. “I mean you going to be a hunter, guardian, scholar? Something else?” He offered the options in a strained voice. Maybe he should have just let the conversation die. Sure the job was much duller without it… But hey, sometimes dull was good.
He might still not be feeling great, but at least he wasn’t being prodded into talking about it. When Sharaku mentioned an easy living space Ozaki had to nod at that. Before the academy had taken him in he’d been homeless himself. The dorms had been a godsend…. Okay maybe not a godsend considering a good deal of gods had it out for the undead.
Perhaps he could have tried to go to child protective services at that age, get into the system… But frankly he’d been more afraid that such a system would be more protection from him than the other way around. The Academy was at least full of hunters who could and would stop someone before they could go out of control. Thankfully their preferred method of controlling young vampires was not to kill them. There were plenty of ways to pacify a frenzied vampire with either magic or sedation.
“I remember the dorms… They were pretty nice.” They were a bit crowded and loud at times, but frankly Ozaki preferred a bit of noise in his domicile, it made it feel more cozy and less isolating.

The Vamp Wolf | That? He’d raise an eyebrow with a snort. “Do I even really need to answer that one? What do you think I’d be?” In all seriousness, given the way he was and all, it ought to not be too hard to make the right guess. He already mentioned he wasn’t the type to sit down and study crap, which was kind of a scholar thing, and with his mostly impatient attitude and forceful style, he’d hardly make a solid fit for a guardian. Well, he would do it if he had to, but God were those tasks boring, especially if they lasted for a long time in one go. He preferred some worthwhile action most of the time, unless he had other reasons to be taking interest in a particular job.
“…I’d like the dorms more if there were less people in them. Not a fan of those annoying younger students who don’t know when they ought to fuck off and tone down all the noise.” He had never been the party-goer type of person, and in all likelihood, he’d never be. It was far too exasperating for his liking. The dorms were sort of nice as a living space, but if he were to be entirely honest, he did not completely dislike not having a permanent residence. It wasn’t that bad. He knew how to live outside, and being part wolf only made that easier for him. It was however also more dangerous in the long term, as there were far too many people going through natural areas in attempts to hunt wild monsters and the like. Not a fun shtick. |

“Hunter I guess. But I didn’t want to just assume.” Vampires were natural hunters, as well as werewolves. Put them together and you’d have a natural proclivity towards Guardian. But he hadn’t wanted to just assume based on species. Sharaku had shown some interest in reading after all, but only in practical topics that had use. And the life of a scholar could be a dangerous one if you were studying unusual creatures.
When he was younger he’d liked the idea of being a guardian. But his natural talents were far more suited to that of a hunter, so he’d opted for that. It wasn’t like you couldn’t protect people using the methods of a hunter anyhow. Less people got hurt if you avoided direct combat.
Then again. He probably had a different interpretation of what it meant to be a Master Hunter than some did. “Eh. I guess I liked the noise myself. Its weird when things are too quiet.” He could put music on, but it just didn’t have the same effect for him.

The Vamp Wolf | “It’s the only thing that works for me. I’m not interested in spending my life researching, and just guarding people gets boring.” If he absolutely had to take one of those two, he’d likely go for a scholar and just do whatever he wanted to, since one could attempt to ‘study’ just about anything. Nevertheless, he did not have interest in documenting findings and such, which would make him terrible for that job. “Although, I’m not certain the school can teach me something revolutionary about hunting. It’s a very different experience for those who come study it from having lived a peaceful family life, than it is for those who already have first-hand experience.” The learning curve was not the same for everyone, but everyone had to take the dumb classes to get a certificate all the same in the end, no matter whether they needed to be taught about how to hunt or not.
He’d shift the brush from one hand to the other in thought. “I prefer to not keep getting disturbed for no reason. The dorms house a fairly big age range of people, and I can’t say I find myself pleased with having some rowdy highschoolers being a pain close by. I don’t feel up to the kid stuff.” He hadn’t since who knew when. It wasn’t even that he was legitimately too old…but growing up the way he had did not contribute to making him the most childish person, not even when he was younger. |

Ozaki gave a knowing grunt at the comment of first hand experience. The school had managed to teach him more direct methods of fighting. But he would always hold preferences toward the ambush and trickery methods he’d learned on his own. Of course going to the school had helped him learn how to refine those. Plus the ranged weapons had been something new to him that he’d been more than happy to embrace. He’d learned a lot at the Academy.
They’d even had a hunting class for hemophages in particular. One which… He’d taken but not ultimately succeeded in where it mattered. It wasn’t for lack of trying on his or the teacher’s end. Nowadays he was thinking he might be able to successfully do it if he were some manner of sedated. But Ozaki wouldn’t trust himself with that. Better not to slip into the temptation. The recent relapse due to the blood frenzied state his beating had driven him to made it hard enough to just drink the blood packs as it was without getting a refresher on the temptation. He just needed more time and it’d be fine.
His mind was currently scrambling for what to say in response to Sharaku other than the grunt he had already provided. This conversation was barely floating as it was. And once this train of it fell… He’d probably just let it drop entirely no matter how awkward the utter silence was... Well now if he said something it'd be awkward wouldn't it?

“Well there are ways to test out of some of those classes.” Not all though. The hunting class for vampires, for instance, had definitally been mandatory for him given the circumstances of him coming into the school. The only reason he’d been permitted to stay as a student was because the alternative he had come up with was both commonly used and there had been a way for him to still hunt for himself after he was out of school.
Namely- through the use of needles rather than biting down. He could of course compel a person to bleed themselves of course, but he still preferred the needle option. It was cleaner and less risk of infection later on for the victims. He nodded at the last part. He hadn’t even known the school had existed or that such a class could be taught. He thought instinct would be enough for a vampire… It probably was enough for most, but his… Were… Something. His instincts were a little screwed up.
“Really is a shame for the former.” He muttered. The ones that weren’t able to enroll that was.

Oh. He’d just had a thought. A hemophage outreach program! That’d be great! Sharaku would probably think it was a dumb idea… And frankly Ozaki himself would be incapable of executing such an idea anyways. For one he couldn’t even so much as bite people without killing them, so there went one avenue of ability to help people who might need such a program. Then there were support groups which could be a thing. But there was no way he could talk about himself. Or lead any of that kind of stuff period. But it was a nice thought…
“Well when you are students and you go out on missions you’re supposed to take a faculty member with you. I guess their assumption is that you’ll get experience along the way… But not everyone takes that route I suppose.” They focus too much on the books and not enough on practical application.
“There are lots of jobs one can take with the licenses you get here. Hunters and Guardians often either join the military or become body guards. And the scholars can become researchers of course. I mean you don’t necessarily have to have a license with the things you learn at this school… But with as many species, spells, and other things as there are in the world it could be useful.” Not all of those things came preinstalled in someone’s brain or whatever.
The classes at the academy were useful, whether or not Sharaku thought they were common sense knowledge.
