welcome to Eldritch Academy
In a world of myths and mysteries, the pinnacle of the magical academies exists. Eldritch Academy offers education to all ages and species but specializes in the study and training of one's innate mystical capabilities, often called Eldritch Energies, Powers, or Unknowns, but more formally known as their Talent. However, tensions run high with the nations only holding a fragile peace as the Talents that rival the epitomes of technology change the balance of power.
With the more recent uprising of evil Shades and introduction of combat-oriented programs into Talent-focused schools, nations grow more aggressive towards one another. The demand for resources grows, and skirmishes at the border of Arka and Mistere become more frequent. Monsters run into the nations from the Wildes, terrorizing villages and cities. The need for trained or in-training Hunters and Guardians has never been more urgent.

The anger slowly faded as she listened to what Ozaki was saying. That his father had killed countless vampires simply because they were what they were. That he had tried to kill his son and left him in the middle of the street. That he blamed his son for everything he’d done when he first turned.
Ryse looked at the vampire for a few long moments. Sighed quietly. And sat down.
“Mr. Ozaki. When you look at me, what do you see?” She asked quietly. She didn’t wait for an answer, however, and instead continued speaking, shaking her head. “You don’t see a phoenix, do you? No…. you see a strange dog. An anomaly. A freak. It’s what my father saw too.”
She summoned a bit of fire and shaped it into the form of a phoenix with crimson feathers, holding the small figure up with her tail for the vampire to see. “My father loved my mother. He really did. But when he saw that his hatchlings weren’t birds, but misshapen, deformed things , he wanted nothing to do with us. He said that we weren’t his children. That my mom was cursed, a liar, and unfaithful. That it would be better for the world if she killed the monstrosities she helped create instead of endangering everyone by letting us live.” The words the phoenix had spoken had never left her memory. They were seared into her brain like a hot iron. The figure faded away, the flames flickering out and extinguishing. Her tail lowered to the ground once more.
“He wasn’t there when my siblings died shortly after they hatched. He wasn’t there to comfort my mom as she watched three of her children die, or help bury them afterwards. Or helped her as she tried to keep her only living child alive. He abandoned his family when they needed him most. I grew up knowing that he never loved me in the first place.”
She glanced at the unconscious man, then looked back at the vampire, sadness in her eyes. “My mom…. She…. she tries to protect me from others that would want to hurt me. But... it doesn’t work. It doesn’t stop the bullies from making fun of me. Or beating me up. Or the death threats that are sent to my house. Or the insults my mom has to hear every day because they believe she’s cursed; because of events she couldn’t control. A group of phoenixes attacked us a month ago when I was visiting home and killed my mom; they nearly killed me . They were only stopped because the council finally decided to do something about it. But it doesn’t mean that others won’t try the same thing.”
She stopped her ranting, taking a deep breath, closing her eyes. When she continued, and looked at him again, her voice was shaking slightly, and there were tears in her eyes. “They do all of that, because of me. Because I am what I am. Because... I exist. I put my family in danger every day simply because I lived when my brother and sisters didn’t."
She wiped the tears away with a wing and she took another deep breath, collecting herself, before speaking again.
"So. Tell me. Does that make it okay for me to hunt down my father because he despises me? What about the bullies for the terrible things they’ve said and done to me? Or the church grim that attacked my mom and caused me to be what I am in the first place? Or those that would want me and my family dead?”
She gestured to Ozaki’s father with her muzzle pointedly. “Does that make it okay for me to kill them all in cold blood? Like what you’re going to do to your father?”
It was hard for her to tell the vampire all of this. So very, very hard. She'd never told anyone except Oras about what she and her mother went through. But she did understand. She understood what it was like to have rage boiling in your veins, to hate the people who wronged you. She'd wanted to kill the bullies that made fun of her for years. But. She knew that killing them wasn't the answer.

Well. That was a personal bombshell that Ozaki wished to death he had time to analyze and try and comfort Ryse over. But this really wasn’t the best time for that. He glanced at his phone again. Four minutes. When Yuuto woke he’d have a limited time before he actually was able to use his talent functionally again. About a thirty second window for last words. Last words for him anyways… He knew what Yuuto would say.
“Look… I’m sorry for all that happened to you. I honestly don’t know the answer to that… But if I don’t kill him, he’ll live to kill another day. I’m killing him for myself… Yes that’s true. But… But he can’t… If he… If he remains alive when I could have done something, those he kills are on my hands too.”
He had only recently managed to liberate himself from the idea he was wholly responsible for Yuuto’s path in life… Ozaki knew that he could have killed Yuuto years ago. He had wanted to. But had held himself because because he thought he had not had the right to be angry at him. That it was all his fault. Now Ozaki knew it wasn’t his fault… He did not have that holding him back. But if he had the ability to kill Yuuto, it was his responsibility. He had had that ability for years and had refused to act on it. He had to now. He had to.
Their situations were similar. But if the torment never stretched beyond himself… Honestly he probably wouldn’t be acting even in this scenario. But there were other lives at stake. And the longer Yuuto roamed free the more people he could hurt.

What Ozaki said caused Ryse to look over at his father with a more contemplative gaze. So the vampire was doing this to prevent more deaths? Not just to satisfy his bloodlust? If his father lived, more people would die? That certainly seemed like a good reason for his actions here. Even so.
"But....w-what about arresting him?" She replied after a moment of thought. "Surely the police are looking for him too, since he's killed all those other vampires. He's probably wanted everywhere. Can't the government put him on trial for his crimes and lock him up for the rest of his life? Execute him for the deaths he caused?"
The vampire wasn't judge, jury, and executioner after all. He was a Hunter, yes. He killed dangerous creatures for a living, amongst other things. But... wasn't this different? This still seemed wrong to her. If his father could be arrested, then there was no need for him to die. At least, not by Ozaki's hands.

Ozaki tilted his head at Ryse. Such an innocent trusting girl. He hated to burst her bubble. And he also hated to start making preparations for Yuuto’s execution in front of her… But if she stayed that’s what he would have to do before long. “Sorry to burst your bubble Ryse… But people like this… The Church of Purity, the organization he comes from, has money, power, and political influence enough to fake any evidence they need, craft any falsehood they’d wish, and paint themselves as the hero the whole time they’re at it. The police wouldn’t be stopping anyone like him. They bend the law to whatever shape suits them. He will never so much as see the inside of a court room for his crimes, no one in that blasted human supremacist cult ever will.” He spat out the last part in sheer scorn for their very existence.
Normally he wasn’t nearly as chatty about his past but hey… The only way to convince her in this case was to tell her the ugly truth of the world.

“Wh…what?”
Ryse’s eyes widened at what Ozaki had just told her. The Church of Purity? A human supremacist organization? She’d never heard of such a thing before. “W-wait…. You’re saying that the police. Won’t do anything to stop them? But... but….that's wrong! ” Wrong on so, so many levels.
All of those people he killed….. And they would never get the justice they deserved because the organization would just craft whatever story they wanted, and the law enforcement would do nothing to stop it.
If she wasn’t already sitting down, she would have at this point.
“That’s….. I…. I can’t even say how horrible that is…..” It was the only thing she could say as her brain whirled. Unable to comprehend just how this group could get away with so much death and illegal activity. They could do literally anything, and they wouldn’t be punished for it. And that was what scared her the most.
Was the group only in Mistere, she wondered? Or was it in the other two regions as well? How far was their spread of influence?

“No, in fact if the organization asked the police would help them.” Ozaki growled, then deflating a little bit as he spoke again. “Sometimes the only way to make things right is to… Is to take matters into your own hands.”
With that he picked up Yuuto and started dragging him across the bridge to its center. Things had to be ready by the time he woke up.

“Wait…..”
‘Please tell me he’s not going to…’
“No…. Nononononono!” Ryse hurriedly padded forwards, stopping in front of him. Ears flat against her head as she looked at him pleadingly.
“Mr. Ozaki, please. Please don’t. I know he’s a terrible person. I know he needs to pay. I know he deserves it. But…. this is just wrong! Killing him like this is just as bad as him killing those other vampires!”
If his father attacked him and Ozaki killed him in self defense, that would be acceptable. He would be fighting for his life, and if he killed the person who was trying to kill him in return, then no harm done. But killing him like this? Sent all the alarm bells ringing in her head.
She didn’t want to see anyone die this way. Human supremacist, vampire hunter or not.

This was a pain. Ozaki looked at his phone. Three minutes. You know… As much as he might want his father to hang. It would be much simpler to cut off his head. Then, even if he did have one of his ritualistic tattoo to remotely trigger phoenix downs from a distance… Well there wasn’t any of those on his face, were there? Disconnect him from his precious tattoos and there would be nothing.
He wanted his father to die in agony multiple times for what he had done. But… Ryse’s words were making his very heart ache. He knew this wasn’t in any way good. “How… Ryse. Do you propose I kill him then? In head to head combat, in a fair fight… Or even in one which I pulled every trick in the book. He has technique beyond my years, and a talent that is all but created to destroy vampires like myself. He is trained to kill creatures like me. And he’s lethally effective if you actually get into a fight with him. In a regular fight I could not win. You might disagree with this method, but it works. And it has to be done.”
It has to. It has to. And it has to be him. Because he can, he must. Ozaki tried to draw his fingers through his hair in a fretting motion, but found the ski mask was there. Right. He was glad it was there. This wasn’t easy for him. It really wasn’t. Even after this there was still a part of him that wished things could be different. But they were never different. Yuuto had always been this kind of man. And he would never change. He had to die.

Her brain scrambled to come up with an intelligent response. A clear answer to the stalemate they found themselves in. But Ryse could think of nothing. She opened her mouth. Closed it.
Then shook her head. “I…. don’t know.” She said shakily. It was clear from what the vampire said that him fighting his father one on one would end poorly. But… Ozaki had said his father was talented in killing vampires. Not so much phoenixes or other species. “Maybe I could h--”
She stopped herself from finishing the sentence, hanging her head in shame. She wasn’t a killer. She wasn’t the kind of person who would kill someone. Even if they really deserved it. The exception being if they were trying to kill her. However, the very fact that she had even began to offer to help kill the man filled her with shame.
“It’s still wrong. And you know it.” She whispered. Screw it if the method was effective. Everything in her body was screaming ‘No’.

He could tell she didn’t have the guts to do it. There was nothing wrong with that. Nothing wrong with not having the guts to commit cold blooded murder. She was trying to get him not to do it. Ozaki was a Master Huntsman. Many people saw the label of huntsman and assumed that it meant he would be fighting in close combat… But no. Ozaki’s preferred way of fighting was from a distance. He had his darts, his sniper rifle. He had taken down all manner of beast with a lethal dose of sedative that sent them off peacefully into the afterlife.
When there was a bounty he took them alive if he could using a less lethal manner and brought them into the proper authorities. Point was, he kept hands clean of blood if he could. Considering that was definitely one of his triggers for an intense hemophobic episode.
This method would have no physical blood. But the blood would definitely be on his hands, no matter how he did this. He placed the chains on the ground. Yuuto undoubtedly had multiple lives… He could not decide which would be worse for Ryse to see. Him use a dagger and sheer strength to tear off Yuuto’s head… Or watching him hang and die repeatedly over and over.
The first time would be painless but…The next ones Yuuto would die much slower. Painful deaths he fully deserved. But… Ryse was here. And she wasn’t going to go away. “I… I know its wrong.” He couldn’t even look her in the eye right now. “But… There isn’t… There isn’t a right way for any of this. You should just… You should just go Ryse. This has nothing to do with you.”

The teenager looked at the vampire. Looked at the man on the ground. Then at the chains lying beside Ozaki. Before finally looking back at him.
“You’re my friend, Mr. Ozaki. Or at least…. I’d... like to think that you are…” She didn’t know if the vampire considered her a friend or not. Maybe that was just the naive part of her talking. “Friends don’t let other friends commit murder.”
Before the other would be able to react, she would rush forward and grab the chains in her jaws, attempting to drag them away. She wasn’t moving as fast as she would like. The chains were heavier than she thought they would be. “I’m sorry…. But I can’t let you do this.” She said, somewhat muffled. “We can find some other way. There’s always another way!”

He had to internally correct something in his head from earlier. Decapitation would not work. Phoenix downs could revive from nothing but ash, they revived from the soul. Not the physical body. Simply cutting off Yuuto’s head would not work. He would have to go with the hanging. But Ryse needed to get out of here.
The Mythril-Gold in the chains would suffice to keep him from turning completely to ash, but not stop the revival entirely. Any how…
He would like to think that Ryse and him were friends. But there were bigger stakes on the line here than morality. “We are but… But sometimes you have t-“ He was cut off as Ryse surged forward to try and take the chains from him.
They were indeed very heavy. Were it not for Ozaki’s vampiric strength he would not even be able to carry them at all. And were it not for his vampiric speed she may have succeeded in fully getting them away from him. Ozaki dropped the umbrella entirely. Every skin of his skin was covered at this point with the addition of the ski mask and sun glasses. They were only getting in his way now.
He grabbed the side of the chains opposing her. “No we can’t! He’ll never change! Ryse. Sometimes you have to do the wrong thing to do the right thing. The longer he lives the m-“
The phone alarm went off, causing Ozaki to momentarily freeze while still holding the chains.
Yuuto Asahi was starting to rouse, slowly blinking emerald green eyes so similar to his own it made him sick. He hated that he shared even an inch of similarity with this man. He wanted him dead. He wanted him dead now. “Wh… Where…” He was confused what was going on for a moment until his eyes set upon Ozaki. He might not be able to see the vampire’s face right now, but he knew that build and that trench coat anywhere. Even groggy as he was his gaze hardened to a hateful steel as he struggled to move past the drug that clung in dregs to his system by this point. “Of courssssse. I’d exsssspect a cowardly corpse puppet like yoooou to use such mmmmethods. You wouldn’t dare face me in actual combat like a real man.” His words were slow and slurred, and he was already trying to activate his talent through the fog.
But he couldn’t focus quite enough. Not yet…

For a brief moment there was a tug-of-war between Ryse and Ozaki. Ryse trying to pull the chains away while the vampire was tugging them back. She dragged her paws along the ground as a desperate growl rumbled from her throat. He knew this was wrong and yet he was willing to do this anyways. Why? Why was the wrong thing the right thing to do sometimes?
Before she could ask the vampire this question, she froze as she heard the voice coming from the unconscious man lying on the ground. Or, rather. The now waking up man on the ground.
Gaze snapping to him, she could easily see the hatred in his green eyes. The same green eyes that the vampire had. It was clear the man held unbridled rage towards Ozaki. Loosening her grip on the chains, she let them fall to the ground. She wasn't sure if the man had spotted her yet. But she felt it safe than sorry if she disappeared before he did.
Turning invisible, she would slowly circle around the man. Perhaps she could get the jump on him while he was distracted by Ozaki. She wasn't going to let him hurt her friend.

He had limited time. Twenty five seconds before Yuuto would be cognizant enough to use his talent and scorch Ozaki off the face of the earth. The moment Ryse let go he knew he could not let anything hold him back. He had to use all his speed in this very moment. Because even if she might have started to realize Yuuto’s darkness, she would likely still try to stop him because of the idea that murder was inherently wrong no matter what.
No matter how many people Yuuto had killed, no matter how many people it would save. This was self defense, even if Yuuto was unable to defend himself now. The idea that if he died in combat it would be any different was a foolish notion that if you fought honorably, the outcome would be any different. That the person would not end up any less dead.
Ozaki uncoiled the chain, revealing on one of its ends that there were about ten ties tied along the length of one of its ends. It was odd… Seeing the multi-colored parade of ties interwoven with the golden-green hued chain. It was… Kind of an inside joke for Ozaki… He’d thought it’d be funny. But to anyone else it probably made him look seriously twisted. Like he was making some sort of sick joke out of this whole thing.
He tied the chain around Yuuto’s neck rapidly. Since chain wasn’t nearly as flexible as rope he had had to go with a different type of knot entirely than the traditional hang man’s noose. But this one would work. It was functional. It would stay. He had practiced the knot many times, had tested its strength and if it would stay… Not with his own neck or anyone else’s of course… Eggggch.
“Figured I’d at least return your ties before you died.” He hissed venomously into Yuuto’s ear. Precious seconds wasted. Ryse would try and stop him. But he knew nothing he would say would get to Yuuto. He at least wanted one last word in.
“Y-“ Yuuki Ozaki then moved to shove Yuuto off the bridge, holding the chain at six feet down its long length for the initial drop.

Ryse’s eyes widened as she watched the scene happening in front of her. She realized now that letting go of the chains had been a huge mistake. It had given Ozaki the time needed to do what he was doing now.
no.
It was as if she was frozen, unable to look away as she watched the vampire unwrap the chain and swiftly run towards his father.
No.
Ozaki wrapped the chain around the older man’s neck, her barely hearing what he hissed into his ear.
NO!
The pair walked closer to the edge of the bridge, and just before the vampire could push the man off, she flew towards them and leapt at Ozaki. If the vampire didn’t dodge out of the way, she would barrel into him, knocking him down. “Stop!” She shouted, her heart in her throat as she would place a paw on the other’s shoulder. Not hard enough to pin him down, but enough for him to know she was there. She didn’t dare drop the invisibility. The situation was definitely not safe enough for that. “Please.” Tears clouded her vision, her heart hammering in her chest. Murder was never the answer. At least to her, it wasn’t. She knew that Ozaki was ready and willing to do it, but she would never be one to do such a thing.
