welcome to Eldritch Academy
In a world of myths and mysteries, the pinnacle of the magical academies exists. Eldritch Academy offers education to all ages and species but specializes in the study and training of one's innate mystical capabilities, often called Eldritch Energies, Powers, or Unknowns, but more formally known as their Talent. However, tensions run high with the nations only holding a fragile peace as the Talents that rival the epitomes of technology change the balance of power.
With the more recent uprising of evil Shades and introduction of combat-oriented programs into Talent-focused schools, nations grow more aggressive towards one another. The demand for resources grows, and skirmishes at the border of Arka and Mistere become more frequent. Monsters run into the nations from the Wildes, terrorizing villages and cities. The need for trained or in-training Hunters and Guardians has never been more urgent.

She managed to barrel into him on time, sparing Yuuto his very timely demise. Had she had the sound of footsteps to betray her, Ozaki may have seen it coming. But without that and with his intense concentration he could not see it coming.
The girl was begging him to stop now. But… No matter what she said he had to do this. It would be cowardly not to. He had been a selfish coward for years for not killing Yuuto sooner. How many people had died because he couldn’t get the simple idea through his head that the father he had wanted had never existed in the first place? He couldn’t do anything about that now though. All he could do was fix things going forward.
But not in front of Ryse. She was sobbing for him to stop. Seeing something like this… She was too innocent to see such a thing. And too naive to understand that it was the only way to truly stop someone like Yuuto. Maybe she just didn’t care about those lives… No. No surely not… But maybe it would take a different approach.
“You don’t seem to realize.” Ozaki’s words were pure acid. “That you are attempting to save the life of a man who would lock a phoenix child in a basement, in a cage, away from the sun for the entirety of her life just to use and puck her feathers from her. He is no man. He is a monster whose worse than any one he’s ever hunted and must be put down.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yuuto, meanwhile, was trying to activate his talent Righteous Fury to burn through the chains on his neck, or pull the knot apart. He couldn’t figure out the knot and the chains did not seem to be reacting to the heat he was just barely managing to bring to his palms. It wasn’t much yet though… Yuuto had to get out of here. “He’s… He’s lying.” He gasped, lying himself in order to try and pull on the freakish creature’s heart strings to get her guard down. “Donnnn't let himmmm fool youuuu. He may seem nice, but I'm not the furrrst person he'd have killed. He's a vvvcious monster who is savage even by his own species shtandards when he feeds."
Very slowly, the invisibility dropped from the hybrid as her eyes widened in terror, looking at the man with horror on her face. Would he really do that?! No. Nobody would be that cruel. Locking a phoenix away from the sun was just like starving them. They would forever yearn for something they could never see. And to use them on top of that for their feathers….. the thought made her sick to her stomach.
So far, the vampire had been nothing but truthful, with the exception of why he had been running the tests in the first place. Ryse had no reason to doubt him. If he said the man would do those terrible things, she believed him.
When the man began speaking to her, she took a step backwards from him. Ears laying back against her head, her fur bristled and she snarled. “Liar! Mr. Ozaki is nothing like that. He’s nothing like you. ”
Even so, she wondered if there was an inkling of the truth in his words. She didn’t think the vampire was a monster. Just someone who was trying to do what was right, even if his methods weren’t what she could call moral. But she wondered just how many people he had killed. She sensed this wasn’t his first time doing so; what he was doing seemed too well prepared for this being his first kill.
Ozaki grimaced when Yuuto spoke. He… Wasn’t entirely wrong. If Ozaki bit down on someone he was liable to rip them apart and gorge on their flesh. He was no proper vampire by any means. But that was when he was in a frenzy… This was something entirely different.
When you’d been working out the plan for about a month you better well seem prepared. Then there was his hunter’s training, while it had never been explicitly meant to carry or murders or assassinations, you better well believe the skill set could travel over rather easily. With the right materials and rituals you could send someone straight to hell. Their body would never be found.
But he wasn’t willing to put it past Yuuto to find a way out of hell just to get to him. Plus that would just be cruel to the demons just trying to live their own lives down there. I mean.. They were demons. But hell was where they belonged and their world of very strange morals. Point held though.
Time was ticking. He had gotten what he wanted to say to his father across. He could see the man stepping backward to the edge… Undoubtedly thinking that if he could manage to kill himself before Ozaki executed his own plan, that he could be free of the drug and come after Ozaki at full tilt.
Ozaki mused letting him try that… Yuuto Asahi would not realize until it was too late that the chain that was currently up here heaped into a pile was more than enough of a counter weight for him. But as horrified as Ryse already was at this… Might as well not subject her to that. The vampire withdrew a dart from his pack, the blood within shifting to a transparent liquid and throwing it at the man.
“He’d r-“ Yuuto’s words were cut short as a dart imbedded itself into his neck and he fell like a rock.
Ryse didn't notice the grimace on Ozaki's face. She was too focused on the man who was speaking. It was easy for her now to see just how much of a monster this man really was. The cold gleam in his eyes, his venemous words, his lies. Everything about him screamed evil.
So focused was she, that she also didn't notice the dart that the vampire had pulled out. She opened her mouth to snarl something else, but stopped in surprise as a dart embedded to his neck, and the man dropped like a stone. Staring at him for a moment in shock, she snapped herself out of it, shaking her head.
"What.... did you do....?" Ryse hesitantly stepped forward towards the man, sniffing him warily. Was he still alive? Was he dead? She couldn't say for sure.
“I knocked him out… Cann’t kill him that way. He’d just remotely trigger one of the potential hundreds of phoenix downs he stole from her over the years. Then he’d be right up again, no drugs in his system at all. And out for blood.” Ozaki stared down at him. He was glad he had the ski mask and sunglasses right now. It would make it that much more difficult to truly see his expression warp into something terrible. It was cold steel that crept into his eyes, and his mouth curved into a terrible sort of blood thirsty glee that looked horrifying. Yet the chill and blood lust was clear in his voice as he spoke, even if she could not see the full depths of it on his face. And perhaps only a faint shadow of it past the sunglasses. “No courtroom in Mysterie would try him… “ He muttered thoughtfully as he rubbed his chin, looking down at Yuuto Asahi. “Tell me though Ryse… How do you reckon this council of yours would react to hearing such a tale? What do you think they would do to a man like this?” Something, Ozaki could only hope, worse than death.
The cold chill in his voice caused her to involuntarily shiver. She was suddenly very glad she couldn’t see his face right now.
Glancing warily at Ozaki, Ryse hesitated before she answered his question. She looked down at the man, sitting beside the vampire as she thought. “Vissarion and the Bask Council are neutral when it comes to matters. They do things for the greater good of the species.” She replied, voice thoughtful as she remembered the things her mother had told her many times before. “The council didn’t help me or my mother until those phoenixes attacked us. We had outside help that convinced them to do so.” Namely a very familiar glacier Atronach named Oras. She still wondered how he managed to convince them.
“Evil Phoenixes who are caught by the Bask Enforcers are either sent to prison in the Aubade. Or the enforcers use the Null Lantern on them.” She shivered a little at this. “The Null Lantern sucks out an offender’s soul. I’ve heard it’s very painful.” Phoenixes who have had their soul sucked out were permanently killed. To imagine that, it frightened her beyond belief. She wasn’t sure how having one’s soul removed would affect someone who wasn’t a phoenix, though. It was possible the man would be a mindless creature for the rest of his life.
She looked at the vampire, expression completely serious. “I’m not sure how they will trial someone who’s not a phoenix. The Lantern is mainly used on phoenixes. But considering what he’s done to one of their own….. I’m sure they’ll make an exception for him.” Someone who captured a phoenix, held them prisoner, and tortured them like Yuuto had done? Oh yeah. They would stand him on trial for sure. Being imprisoned in the Aubade for life would be a mercy for him, compared to the Null Lantern.
Ozaki let out a harsh barking laugh before he could stop himself. “Hear that Yuuto? You could end up a soulless husk, just like me. Wouldn’t that be great?!” He leaned over Yuuto, a thoughtful look on his face. Vampires were soulless creatures. Getting a phoenix’s soul sucked out might be fatal for them, but it wasn’t always the case with some species. Humans being amongst them. He realized that he probably should make a clarification as well about what he had just said. He did not truly consider vampires soulless husks. Even if it was true they were soulless, that did not mean they were empty inside. “I'll note that those were Yuuto's words... Not mine. But it wouldn’t kill him like it would a phoenix though.” He muttered thoughtfully.
Could they really trust this court system? They were just as flawed as any other no doubt. What if he was “proven innocent?” He’d have to get Birdie to testify. Though perhaps his memories of her might suffice to work. Then again, he wasn’t sure they’d take the word or memories as a vampire as doctrine… It was hard to say. He didn’t want to put her on the stand like that though. "How can we be sure this court system will actually convict him though?"
The hybrid raised an eyebrow at his sudden laughter. She didn’t really see what was funny about this, but it was clear that Ozaki did.
“If they’re given substantial proof that the events happened. Then they would convict him. The Council would never allow such a man to walk free. To do so would put more phoenixes in danger.” Ryse shook her head. The Council looked after the well-being of their kind. If they let a man like that go to walk free to the same to more phoenixes, even after pledging to look after their people, then she would lose faith in them entirely.
“Is it possible to draw out his memories to show? Some sort of spell or such?” Obtaining memories from the person that committed the crime would no doubt put the nail in the coffin.
“That’d be possible to do even if you didn’t have the power of a deity.” According to his research the phoenix gods scanned the hearts and minds of each person that passed through their afterlife in order to conduct their trails in the most efficient manner. But they didn’t even need to go that far for that. “Though some places might consider such a seizure of memories as a violation of his rights…. I doubt that’d be the case in this country.”
They were used to being put on trial on the basis of their memories. He could hardly see them hesitating to use such methods in their own country.
Ryse nodded. "Then that's what we're going to do." She stated.
"We get his memories, and we show them in the trial as evidence. He'll be convicted of his crimes by the phoenix council. And he'll be dealt with permanently. He won't hurt or kill anyone anymore."
She felt great about this plan. She thought it was much better than Ozaki's original plan, and she inwardly sighed with relief that the vampire had thought of this in the first place. She was glad he did; she didn't even think of the Council trying his father until he mentioned it. They didn't normally meddle in affairs regarding other species besides their own. The victims he killed and tortured would get the justice they deserved. And hopefully Ozaki would be satisfied in watching whatever punishment the Council would inflict upon his father.
Besides... she really hadn't wanted to watch her friend murder someone in cold blood.
Ozaki was vacillating between relief and sheer blood lust right now. He wanted his father to suffer for his actions. The method of his death that Ozaki had chose would have likely been him suffocating a hundred times over. He deserved a painful death. But… With any luck a stay at a prison were the prisoners knew you were a child kidnapper would be a fate worse than death… Ozaki had heard tale that child abusers did not get it easy in prison. If people did not already know, the wardens were want to make sure they did.
He still wanted o hurt him though… Without even so much as a moment’s warning Ozaki’s foot came down hard on Yuuto’s back with incredible speed, an ugly breaking crack audible from the break. “Better safe than sorry.” He muttered as an explanation. He wasn’t sure whether Yuuto would be paralyzed from the waist down or the neck up from that… But either way he doubted the phoenixes would fix him. Ozaki mildly wished he'd been conscious to feel that pain though.
So long as he didn’t die and be revived he’d be stuck like this. Though that’d likely be less of a problem once the Null Lantern got to him. Phoenix downs tended to be much less effective on those without a soul.
Funny she was thinking that though. Ozaki wouldn’t have even thought of the council if she hadn’t mentioned it either. She had begged him to stop, said there had to be another way. And there was. A way that, Ozaki could only hope, would be worse than a hundred deaths. He would get to live as a soulless cripple in a phoenix prison. And Ozaki wouldn’t have to watch the man he had called father die hundreds of times. Despite himself he was actually kind of glad he didn’t have to do that. And he would have had to stay... If there was anything Yuuto had taught him, it was not to leave until you knew the job was done. “Yes… That will do.”
Ryse flinched, wincing as the vampire delivered the swift kick to his father’s spine. The only thing she could think of was ‘Ow’ . Such an injury would paralyze him for sure; the terrible crack she heard told her that much.
Even so. She didn’t try to heal him. She felt a little sorry for him. But she wasn’t about to waste her energy trying to fix him again. He deserved at least that much.
Turning to Ozaki, she spread one of her wings and wrapped it around him, gently pulling him into a hug. “Thank you, Mr. Ozaki. For not killing him.” She said softly, her forehead pressing against his own. “I…. I know it was hard for you, deciding against it. I know you wanted to make him pay terribly. But.. I’m glad you didn’t.” It was probably a selfish thing for her to say. The vampire had probably been planning how to kill him for a long time, and she’d just stopped those plans. Because she was unwilling to watch him kill his father.
For a moment Ozaki tensed at the hug, then relaxed into it. He squeezed his eyes shut, trying his best not to cry at this moment. He still had his rage, and there was still blood lust aplenty in his system. But there was a part of him that was glad that Ryse had stopped him. Ozaki had killed as a hunter before, for jobs. He had killed as a vampire high on blood lust. But such a cold methodical murder specifically designed to draw out the pain for as long as possible? There were ways he could have killed Yuuto permanently even with the remotely triggered phoenix downs that would revive him even if he was burnt to a crisp.
He didn’t know what they were, but with as much time as he had spent on preparing this he could have thought of such an alternative to kill him if he wanted. Having to watch Yuuto die like that repeatedly though.. He wasn’t sure if he could still be the same person afterwards.
Ozaki hesitantly returned the hug, glad for the cover of his ski mask and sun glasses as a few tears slipped past his guard. “I… Thank you. For stopping me.” For the past month solid he had felt like he was teetering on the edge of an unfathomable rage. He had felt Yuuto’s death would be the only thing that could end it… But as much as he did not want to admit it… He also feared giving into such a depths of rage. That wasn’t him. He didn’t want that to be him. He wanted to be better than that.
Giving into such dark impulses would make him worse than a monster, it would make him just like Yuuto.
He pulled away after a moment, looking back at Yuuto. Then watching both him and the chains disappear. Oh. Ozaki remembered now. How the hell could he have forgotten? Well. Gods blocking one’s memory tended to be a good reason to forget. “You… you’re dead.” He muttered in shock. “I mean… You died… We’re in the trials. None of that was real.”
The only parts of that that had been real were him and Ryse.
um….. what?
Ozaki’s words puzzled her, and she blinked in confusion. “What are you talking about? We’re in Hisakawa, remember? You were about to kill your fa—”
She stopped as she saw that his father wasn’t on the ground. Neither was the chains he was about to use to strangle him. “Wh…..” Where did he go?! It was like he’d stood up and walked off. His spine had been broken.
Internally panicking, she stood up to see if she could try and track down his scent. He couldn’t have gotten far. His scent was still fresh in her nose. But as she sniffed the air, she found there wasn’t a trace of his scent anywhere. Just like there hadn’t been any trace of her mother earlier. “Mr. Ozaki, what’s going on? I don’t understand.”
She turned to the vampire, desperation in her eyes. He’d said that she was dead, and that this was a part of the trial. But... that couldn’t be! She wouldn’t be back home if she was dead. She wouldn’t... be….
She froze as her eyes spotted something strange. Slowly looking down at her paw, she noticed that the fur was gone, and the paw itself was burnt beyond repair. The fur on her spine stood up and she stopped breathing for a moment. Looking down at her chest, her heart skipped a beat. Or…. it would have. Had there not been a hole in her chest where her heart used to be.
Head spinning, the teenager fought to keep from hyperventilating. Looking around, she spotted a small pool of water nearby to her left which she hadn’t noticed there before. Shakily, not really wanting to, she stood up and padded over to it. Then, taking a breath to calm her nerves, she looked into it. And nearly fainted.
Her eyes widened at what she saw. Terrible burns covered nearly every part of her, there was a long set of talon marks that raked through her neck and shoulder, and there was of course the hole in her chest. Scrambling backwards from the water, she was shaking so badly she had to lie down or else collapse. Her stomach heaved, and she thought she was going to vomit what she ate for breakfast that morning.
“I…. I’m r-really… dead.” She rasped, curling into a ball and wrapping her wings around her as if to try protecting herself, paws covering her eyes. Tears streamed down her face.
She remembered now. She remembered everything.
And now he was able to see it too, the illusion he had been put under falling away bit by bit. By Selene’s moonlight… That scream. She’d died horribly. And now the marks were showing again. “R-Ryse. J-“ ust stay calm. He stopped mid word at his paltry attempts to comfort her, as when he tried to reach out to the terrified girl he saw the same blue smoke curling around his arm like a snake.
Ozaki knew whatever he could say wouldn’t be enough, but he had to be here! He had to! Having someone by your side was better than having no one! “No stop. I c-” He gasped, senselessly trying to command the blue smoke before it completely overtook him. In under a span of five seconds Ozaki had utterly vanished, even the blue smoke itself had evaporated into the air. Leaving Ryse all alone to deal with the new found knowledge.
